Elton John won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London at age 11, and studied there on Saturdays for five years, learning to play Frederic Chopin and Johann Sebastian Bach, among others. He grew up loving many genres of music, but because of the Royal Academy, has a special fondness for classical music. That is why so many of his songs have an orchestra.

The early collaborations with Elton John and Bernie Taupin were simply brilliant.

Your bang on, agree 100%, he reached a peak with Yellow brick road, after that, the quality just tailed off a bit.

I'm so glad that you did this song! It's highly underrated and overlooked, but I love it.

That's what his early work was like, quite different from his later work, and when Bernie Taupin and he were in close collabration.
" No man's a jester playing Shakespeare, around your throne room floor; while the juggler's act is danced upon, the crown that you once wore..."
I was a young teenager when this album came out, so very different than the British wave stuff that we were hearing in America. It was an amazing collaboration, he and Bernie.

A brilliantly orchestrated and produced tune that brings out all the emotions. This was Bernie and Elton maturing quickly on this early album .

Cynthia - You're welcome! There's a couple more classics off this album I would like to share. This one reminds me of my oldest sister who passed away in '97. It's hauntingly beautiful.

Pre fab Elton, young and just getting to be the legend he would become. His vocal phrasing and intonation is unmistakably Elton, whether young or older. But it is the harp that mesmerizes me. I wish it was used more often.

Thank you, Harri. When I was in elementary school I would get home from school before my older sisters would and I would go in their bedroom and listen to their albums. They had the album "Elton John" and "Sixty Years On" is on it. It, along with "Your Song", was one of the very first Elton John songs I ever listened to. I was hoping you could play the studio version that I requested but it was evidently blocked. I enjoyed your reaction to this EJ classic -- thanks again!

For Elton this was a very orchestral in execution. The first verse covered by the string section, which crescendos into a bed of strings, joined by the beautiful harp as the lyrics discuss the process of joining the aging society. An organ joins the third verse and rounds out this beautiful song. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Neal. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada. 🇨🇦

Not the exact studio recording but pretty damn near close. Exact same musicians including all the classical musicians. I think this concert was done in front of record company execs to promote the album. The album got the attention of Three Dog Night, who recorded Your Song and Lady Samantha, and Aretha Franklin who recorded "Border Song". This album did not become a hit until Elton and his band came to Los Angeles to play in front of a club full of celebrities and then his music was celebrated all over the music industry and started a U.S. tour of mostly college campuses. Then the album got airplay on FM radio and became a big big hit. This was the beginning of it all.

I selected the studio version but it was blocked and Harri would have had to appeal YT's decision and wait 28 days. He chose this live version as a replacement.

this is from 1970, not 1971. Skaila Kanga (harp player) gave an interview on an Elton John podcast. Just google this: Episode 37 - 'Elton John' at 50 (Part 2) with John Higgins and Skaila Kanga
