The intro is primarily cello, with accents from the harp before the full orchestra comes in. Paul Buckmaster did most of the orchestration on Elton's early albums. Masterfully!

Thank you. I thought that was harp (or lute) but couldn’t be sure if the other strings was a cello or violin because I believe it was hitting notes either can play.

Paul is actually playing the cello intro. He was a musical genius who contributed as an orchestral arranger for a very long list of artists from The Rolling Stones to Taylor Swift and his influence is hard to measure. He started with David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and shortly before his passing finished with Brandi Carlile's album "By the Way, I Forgive You" including her song "The Joke" which you two recently reacted to.

I first took notice of Elton John when I bought this album in 1970. Aside from "Your Song", which skyrocketed him to fame, I love "First Episode at Hienton" and "Sixty Years On" and, of course, "The Greatest Discovery" from this LP.
This was the first album produced for Elton John by his longtime producer, Gus Dudgeon.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin put out their best work in the series of albums from Elton John (1970) to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), imo. It's beautiful, emotionally complex and adult-oriented, unlike much of the stuff that came after. By the mid 70s he was wearing crazy outfits and playing sports stadiums. It was music aimed at 14 year-old girls by that point, because that's who buys the records. But still, those early albums are a life's work in themselves, and they stand the test of time.

For me Elton from 1970-1977 couldn’t be beat. I personally really love the Blue Moves album, but I know some people aren’t into it. I love everything Elton did except for Victim Of Love. I only can listen to Born Bad on that album. A Single Man is one of his most underrated albums, imho (I know it’s without Bernie) as is Tumbleweed Connection.

@@manco828 Yup, traces of genuine artistry lingered into the post-1973 years. You also hear the pop oriented approach emerging in the pre-1974 period - Don't Shoot Me had Crocodile Rock on it ffs, and it went to no.1 in the US!

My lights were dimming at age 42. I finally got a BC diagnosis, had surgery and six months chemo. When I started feeling a little better, my sister and I went to the movies. Afterwards we went to Jack-in-the-box for a bite to eat. As we were standing in line she asked me "if you had a Wish, you know your last wish, what would it be?"
I said, "Spend a couple of weeks with Elton John and him showing me how he writes his music. How he comes up with it".
The Manager obviously overheard our conversation and shockingly shouted, "Elton John?". "Your dying wish is to spend time with Elton John?"
I said, "You don't understand. He's our generation's Amadeus". "Besides, Paul McCartney can pick me up for dinner". :-)
Since then I've discovered I descend from the Bassano's who were court musician's to the Doge of Venice, King Henry VIII, King Edward, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth the first, King James. So maybe it's somewhere in my DNA to at least appreciate it.
My Elizabeth Bassano was a cousin to Shakespeare's Dark Lady, Amelia Bassano. My Elizabeth's husband Albiano Lupo's father was also a court musician. Elizabeth & Albiano came to Jamestown circa 1610, she later. He was killed by the Indians as was their son William. I wonder if she wrote to Amelia about the conditions in the colonies, fodder for Shakespeare's plays.

Apparently, Bernie Taupin was just 16 years old when he wrote these lyrics. The man was Born a poet, and blessed enough to be randomly paired up with the one music composer who could express with melody, Bernie's feelings.

Another Elton tune with a similar vibe is "Michelle's Song." It's fairly obscure. Elton recorded it for the soundtrack to a movie called "Friends." No, I haven't seen it either. I think even a lot of Elton fans may not be familiar with "Michelle's Song," but it is beautiful. I'd love to see your reaction to it.
