- For his live shows in 1970 and afterwards, Elton reworked this heavily orchestrated song for the three piece band, with remarkable effect. As he said of the breakthrough shows at the Troubadour in LA: "We came on; I was in flying boots and hotpants and did Sixty Years On. They weren't expecting it. They thought it was going to be a low-key thing, because the music on the 'Elton John' album was very orchestral. But with a three-piece band, we went out and did the songs completely differently and just blew everyone away. We knew halfway through the show that we were on fire."

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is HOW you perform your talent live. History will be kind to Sir Elton. He is a unique artist whose gift of genius is a blessing on all.
He is a blessing...after ny friend saw him at the Fillmore East in 1971 she said that was what she was going to do all her life...and she did!
Well said.
This sounds like a fucking train crash ladies and gentlemen. Talk about overindulgent. What a crap song.
I don't like this arrangement, in fact it's ghastly.
@@maxwellfan55 to each their own. I respect your opinion.
Nigel playing out of his mind and so is Elton. Wow! The energy of youth
It's called being a genius!
God Nigel kicked it!
For thode who underestimate the power of a three piece band, shut up and listen to this. Elton was a monster.
You sound like you wrote that while in a 3-piece suit.
He still is.
elton john can perform in any kind of band, even solo. this man can do it all and has done it all.
He is a legend
nirvana also an amazing and very popular three piece band
All's I can say is,WOW. What a performance. Elton and Nigel really had it going on.
They still do!!!
11-17-70 blew me away when it came out and it is still my favorite Elton John album. This performance is from the same vintage and, while not as long as the one on the album, captures what Elton was all about at the time. The biggest thing that bothered me about Rocketman was how they replaced this song with Crocodile Rock. This was the song that wowed the critics and paved the way for his success.
Personally I thought he ruined it.
As for ths success you mention.
It depends from which country's perspective.
USA (as an example), were slow starters; with Elton and Bowie.
Maybe it's down to the radio selection at that time.

Absolutely mesmerising, Elton and Nigel giving it some, an amazing performance. Am I wrong to wish Elton was this young now so that we would have him around for many decades more.
Not in the least. When I was in middle school, someone had a radio in the hall, Crocodile Rock was on and I said, "Man, what is that song?"
And your wish has been my since I saw ROCKETMAN opening night last May.
No you’re not wrong! I feel the same way! I’m 60 now and I’ve been a fan since 1973. How I miss those days!
Wow....he isn't called Captain Fantastic for nothing is he? and NIgels performance in this is breathtaking too...both gorgeous men, both incredible performers..just brilliant......
How in the world does he hammer out that tune on a piano with such precision and passion and sing at the same time?
Yeah, and how does he fire and devastate the two guys on stage with him 4 years later?
Dexter Haven - you do understand that things happen offstage too
Because he's Elton and a musical genius!
Bytor Gerhold you are so right my friend! Amazing
Because he Is a genius!!!
OMG what a pianist and a composer and a singer...
Nigel beatin tha drums like a red headed step child.
I saw Elton with Nigel and Dee in April 1971 at the Fillmore East...unreal!!!!
Showing my age but I was fortunate to see EJ, Nov 1971 in Manchester. this video brings back the energy and passion of the concert I saw. No flamboyance of the later years just pure wonderful music. Thanks for posting, Thanks EJ for wonderful memories.
This was around the same time The Partridge family went to #1 with "I think I love you."
So Elton was doing something very original and unorthodox back then.
I have loved this since I first heard about 50years ago
Another excellent piece by Sir Elton. The best music we hear today is often 40 years old or more.
How will this song hold up 60 years on?
Phenomenal memory. THIS is Elton John. I got 11/17/70 when I was 7, still have.
I have it too!
Gus was the best producer Elton ever worked with, he was never afraid to push EJ or call him out on his shit. I was fortunate to have met Gus in 2000 at the East End Lights expo that year, kind man. May he rest in peace
For a 3 piece arrangement, impossible for anyone to duplicate! Every aspect of this performance was perfection
The drummer is Nigel Olson. You can see how beautiful Nigel is in Elton John - Sixty Years On, 1971 (rare live clip). Unfortunately, there is no other video that has better quality and this video is not complete, but you have to see it. Because you've already watched 60 years on Studio and the live version is completely different
This performance gives me chills!!! Great song !!! Elton, Nigel & Dee are AWESOME!!!!
in 1989...i was at madison square garden for to ej shows...and he performed a monster version of THE KING MUST DIE...ONE OF THE GREATEST ALL TIME PERFORMANCES OF A SONG I HAVE EVER WITNESSED...BREATHTAKING....he did 60 years on as well i believe...BUT...THE KING MUST DIE is beyond brilliant..and the way he performed it back then...you knew you were in the presence of brilliance
Dean Martin He is one of the most colossal performers to ever live
The King Must Die is my new go to song on the piano...you can really get into it! One of Elton's best!!.
man his 2004 performance for the king must die which was the last time he performed also gave me chills
Very hard to find fault with Elton's music.....any fault....truly amazing.....
Like Gus says, how the hell’s he gonna do it? But he does it. What a great vid. Elton forever.
This is an awesome version of that song, definitely better in my mind than the album. Love to see Nigel's drumming. Awesome!
One of my favourite songs. I love the classic Elton John up until the blue moves album.
Thank you for posting. I've listened to the 11-17-70 version about a million times, and consider it Nigel Olsson's best track ever w/EJ. I didn't realize until seeing this that he was using mallets. Great shots of him flailing away!
best era
Absolutely amazing talent. I love this era and this song.
............GENIUS, Elton Mozart John........
Still work on this tune nearly every day, beautiful but tough to play.
I saw him play this live when I was a kid... impressive.
.....LOVE Elton John....!!!
Linda I was going to tell you to get a hobby. But I see you have one already. ;)
Well, that was different! And Elton has left the building!
Always loved his endings. Nigel blew it out of the water!
It's the most beautiful song ever this audio really doesn't do it justice, it is a masterpiece
My favourite Elton's song !
So, we have all walked this time ~~ 60 years on. Thru shit, pain and now, here.
Insanely great
What a man!
Wow, that's awesome!
stunning
First instance where I've seen Elton look like he had to WORK (maybe even break a sweat) to produce the brilliance that comes out of him!
Thank you so much for posting this. I dearly love 11/17/1970.
Sir Elton is the ultimate...a blessed musician with great musicians backing him...Nigel since the beginning! Unreal....
Love hearing this vintage stuff and, especially, SEEING it! My only complaint is with the video not being quite in sync with the sound; that is a minor distraction. Still, amazing to be able to witness such genius at the height of its creativity!
One of my favorite songs
Quel immense artiste Elton John! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Dee Murray!!!
Yep, fired by Elton 4 years after this, and he never socialized with Elton again.
I much prefer the younger Elton days to the Oprah Winfrey pleasing version of recent vintage. He was like a young Liszt here.
Friend, we all get older.
I feel the same
i prefer modern elton for some reason. dunno why. his ephesus performance was the best for me
The King Never must die!!
The passion!!
Incredible adaption from the studio version. Genius reworking!
Elton was great at this time of his career, his 1st 6 albums were so great, and i had every one of them, but when he started wearing costumes and being flamboyant and commercial i was done
I totally agree, after that his music pretty much sucked . I didn’t have that energy and song writing that it was in the seventies. That was a good time for music unlike now
unbelievable
Unfassbar gute Nummer
Fantastic, Thanks for posting!
Captain!
Dexter Haven Ah, you beat me to it!
Brilliant... cheers!
ㅣ이거유명하곡인데?
Simply - WOW!
So amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to the Last Three ! Love Elton !
A megastar
Tellement de talent déjà 👍🎼🎹
Thanks a great deal for posting!!!
Gracias elton por esto
BEST music of the world
No wonder he is still loved till this day
Vintage Elton
Superb
Greatest showman on the planet.
Bernie Taupin magic!!!
Wonderful, thank you so much for posting!! ❤️
You’re great 😍😍 I love you Elton 😍😍💫💫💫
Outstanding !
Gus is relaying old news at the start of this, since Elton already did a great three-piece band version of this song the year before, in 1970. It's on Elton's live album, recorded on 11-17-70.
To whomever"disliked"this video, go home, your drunk!
They are not drunk...that doesn't hurt this song. It is just a lack of taste or the fact that this isn't the song from the beginning. That makes it less appealing for me too.
+Erin Karpinec "..your drunk" WHAT? Your drunk dog? Your drunk uncle? Or did you mean "you"RE drunk" as in "You ARE drunk"?
7 IDIOTS !!!
a genius
One of his beautifulest masterpieces.
This song will be my eulagy when i leave this world.
That's better than mine. I went with "Social Disease" by Elton.
GODDAMM!!!
That drummer was awesome
Incredible
Love him in 70s
I wish Elton would have just done an album of piano music
Try the live albums 17-11-70 and the Live from Moscow.
The average life expectancy is much higher now. Though I love this song, it does kind of make me laugh a little too. I am sixty years-old.
Bernie was 18 when he wrote the lyrics. When you’re 18, sixty is very old indeed.
1970 Elton Dee and Nigel, a real power house
He did that version for A&R studios and just killed it for the small crowd.
Wow.
Énorme Énorme
I was there.....
This was the less commercial Elton.
MY OPINION 11-17-70 IS THE BEST VERSION
When are ever gonna see a proper release of all his live video? So much from the 70s and 80s that has never been put out, or did on VHS. Cmon it’s sitting in some vault somewhere doing nobody any good.
Some it was destroyed in a fire, wasn't it? 😳
I saw another clip of this and it said it was in Tokyo. Kind of funny considering if look at Elton’s mouth you’ll notice the voice and lip movement is a bit off! I know he’s not lip syncing, it’s probably some technical problem. Did anyone else notice that?
Same my age 1956
UFO's "Try Me" owes a lot to Elton's opening here.
MY FAV IN 2055!!!!!!!!!! Scorpio!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When MUSIC WAS MUSIC SO WAS ART!!! Now they call Music to Crap done for empty heads for people wich never will feel or know what Art means .
Fucking masterpiece.
I would need to take a few hours' break after playing that.
Genial
💟💟💟💟
How to absolutely crucify a great song.
Bernie, what can I say.
