Adam - Warren Haynes is a virtuoso guitarist who has played in many bands I admire, including the Allman Brothers. The tragic loss of Allen Woody is the focus of this song. Thank you for this submission. Harri, your review comments are spot-on once again.

Aw man. Losing Woody was awful. When Mule was a power trio in 95, that line up was so powerful it was mind blowing. That first album is one of the best albums I have heard in years.

Harri, this is my favorite band. Have seen them over 80 times. The song is about Allen Woody who with Warren formed Gov't Mule in the early 90s. They had been playing together in the Allman Brothers Band. Sadly after their 3rd album Alan Woody died from a drug overdose. Warren wrote this song about his very lose friend and bandmate. Hence the lines, "Couldn't hire twenty-five men
To do what the man couldn't do
Just the sound of his walkin'
Split the whole damn town in two", This was his homage to one of the most underrated bass players to ever walk the earth. He was a monster bass player. Hope that info helps. There are a ton of great Gov't Mule songs if you continue down the Mule rabbit hole.

I'm with you Bro! I've only had the pleasure to see mule 6 times, Warren two others (Ashes and dust tour, last waltz tour.) Never miss a show they do in Michigan, same with tedeschi Trucks, must see every year.

The song, and the entire Deepest End project was a tribute to former Govt Mule and Allman Brothers bassist Allen Woody. Warren hosted many bass players to sit in. “Couldn’t hire twenty five men to do what the man could do”. Woody was a force. There’s a video of Govt Mule with Woody on the Conan show that’s worth a look.

Thank you Harrii. With love and gratitude as always. Warren is a great guy and a wonderful guitar player. The thing with good song writing, is that it can mean anything to anyone. I love this whole concert. Mike Gordon from Phish on bass is a treat! And Gov't Mule's key board player is as good as it gets!

It sounded at the end as though his best freind drown in the "Deep End" of the lake.I'm not sure but it also sounded as though he wanted to go swim there or something in rememberance of his friend. I Love this song no matter.

I saw GM a couple times in the 90s. And whaddya know, Mike Gordon, of Phish, whom I've met a time or two.
Have you tried Phish, yet? If and when you do, I suggest starting with a "You Enjoy Myself" from the 1993-95 era. It will blow your mind. Then "Run Like an Antelope."

Not so unique. It has the flavor of the Allman Brothers band, which he played one of the lead guitars for years before. Just not quite that level of brilliance though still interesting!

I can't think of one Allman Brothers song that sounds like banks of the deep end.
