    Really good demonstration of different techniques. Although steep takeoffs are widely practised in the real world in this type of aircraft they are potentially highly dangerous if there is sudden engine failure. At such a low height with such a high angle of attack there’s not much hope of recovery. One of the advantages of the sim world!

    Love the content. The airliners I flew were landed as you demonstrated; kicking off the drift and applying into wind aileron to land cross controlled. Of course, sticking to the max crosswind limit is vital in this case as 'fudging it' could lead to more bank than is desirable, followed by a scraping noise and the search for a new job. There are also airliners that are designed to let the main gear sort it for you (makes my blood runs cold to think of it) and the B52 pivots its main gear to stay lined up. I was taught that you should land a taildragger with a wheeler in crosswinds. It only works with a perfectly done wheeler on a tarmac surface. I hate wheelers as they feel so unnatural (I have landed but I may accidentally go flying again ...) so I always stuck to a '2 pointer' as you showed.

      @cgaviator  2 года назад +1

      Haha, high pressure landing a wheeler in these conditions. Though if slow enough, you could probably land perfectly into wind even if that was across the runway! 😄

    I'm disappointed that you missed the most popular landing technique: Turn the engine off, pump on the yoke until the propeller stops and then jump out with a parachute. ;)

    Have you tried a basic engine variant with new propeller physics and without trim flaps? Is the left roll effect accurate?

    • @cgaviator
      @cgaviator  2 года назад +1

      I’ve not tried the basic engine yet. Not have I directly compared new prop physics. I could do some testing for the prop dynamics on takeoff, nice idea. As for the left wing, you mean when applying rudder? If so then yes 👍🏻

    Crabbing or slipping to the runway in a crosswind Landing is definitely a “pilots preference“ thing. Both techniques will work. My preference, is to slip all the way down. In my opinion, keeping the nose directly down the runway and flying the slip all the way down eliminates the need for you to make a dramatic control change right before touching down. It’s better to keep the approach as stable as possible without making huge configuration changes to the controls immediately before landing. One thing pilots need to keep in mind, however, is that when you’re slipping to a landing for a crosswind, your descent rate will be steeper than usual, so expect a steeper profile. After all, a slip is still a slip.. Again, this is just my opinion and preference after 15 years of flying. (Supercub pilot)

    • @cgaviator
      @cgaviator  2 года назад

      Cool, thanks for the info!

    • @AV8R_1
      @AV8R_1 2 года назад +1

      @@cgaviator also, I forgot to mention, when you’re flying a slip your airspeed will read lower than normal. When some pilots fly a slip to a landing, in the case of a slip being used for rapid descent rather than crosswind correction, they will sometimes get confused why they are carrying too much air speed when they roll out of the slip and balloon. The reason is usually they are flying their normal descent airspeed on the ASI even though they are flying a slip. In reality, their air speed is higher than indicated, so as soon as they turn the pitot tube directly into the wind their air speed needle shoots up and they end up being too fast. If you’re the type that flies the ASI on the numbers down the approach, shoot for about 5 kts slower than usual.

    What you called a side-slip was, in fact, a forward slip. In a side-slip, the windward wing is lowered and opposite rudder is used to point down the runway. In a crosswind, this keeps you centered over the runway. Without a crosswind, a side-slip can move you laterally while still pointing straight ahead. In a forward slip, the nose is yawed in one direction and opposite rudder is applied to prevent turning in that direction. The airplane is in a high-drag configuration and descends rapidly on runway heading, but the nose is not aimed down the runway. The forward slip must be neutralized before landing. I learned: a forward slip has the airplane moving forward down the runway, but not pointing down the runway. A side-slip has you pointing straight down the runway, while preventing a crosswind from moving you to the side.

    One interesting thing, I know some really big aircraft, like the B-52 I believe, actually have undercarriage that can rotate and point at an angle from where the nose is pointed, such that you can touch down with the undercarriage lined up in the direction of travel (hopefully straight down the runway) while the body of the aircraft can remain in the crab. I think they do this as with those large aircraft the bank angle limit I'd imagine is tiny to avoid wing tip strike.
