- We go to the Carolin mine and find a huge Gold mine,13 miles of tunnels with a huge mill, diamond drill and a quad that still runs!
The Carolin gold mine is located about 20 kilometres northeast of Hope on the northwest side of Ladner Creek at an approximate elevation of 1070 metres (3500 feet) above sea level. The property (originally called the Idaho claims) was first staked in 1915. During its three years of operation, the Carolin mine produced a total of 1354 kilograms of gold from 799,199 tonnes of ore. During the life of the mining operation there were several periods of shutdown resulting from environmental concerns and poor gold recoveries. These and other difficulties resulted in the the closure of the mine at the end of 1984.

We do this for two main reasons:
1) Documenting the mines for future generations.
2) Collecting artifacts for our museum.
Mines are being filled in, demolished, and/or collapsing at an alarming rate, so it is crucial to document them and save these artifacts while it is still possible.

We are interested in preserving history and documenting mines. We would only take something for the museum if it was clearly abandoned and of historical significance.

It was quite active not too long ago, tried to go explore it summer of 2019 and was quickly kicked out. I'm located in Hope and know lots of hidden mines around the area. The mine up at Silver Peak is the first established gold/silver mine in the Fraser. It was recently being reworked by a private owner. Cheers Frank!

Five foot of snow WOW - we're all done here in Yorkshire if we get 5cm. Fantastic mill and site, thanks for showing us. The icicles looked amazing, with the light behind them it was the most beautiful chandelier. What a huge mine and so much equipment in there, really fascinating. Thanks Frank and Sharon. Very interesting and extensive operation. Lots of rumours about the mine over the years. Whether the gold is there or that the gold is hard to mill and separate. It's not the only mine in the Hope area as nickel was mined closer to Hope.

Frank your BIN is an pneumatic air chute, or a chute as they are called in Ontario mines anyways if you ever head to northern Ontario I'm sure some one can arrange a mine tour of a real operating mine as there are many and a few around my town that are about to begin operating. Most mines here are trackless mining , I worked in a recent shut down gold mine that was old school track mining, it operated for about 115 years continually , the Dome mine, I worked there for 27 years. The other 2 mines are trackless mines, where I worked for16 years total, one Kidd Creek mine is the deepest base metal mine in the 'world' at 9600' plus, and my last mine is a newer gold mine, Hoyle Pond at approx. 5000' deep. Most of the closed mines around here are still owned by present day mining companies as we are in one of the biggest mining regions of Canada....Btw your video was truly awesome, thanks Frank!!!

I love Carolin, by far my favorite place to explore. I was in the mine the day that quad was abandoned and ran into the owner and his friend on the lower levels. He split up from his buddy while exploring, had a panic attack, left his quad, and got lost. His buddy found him not too long after, owner was so freaked out he wasn't even speaking. I ran into them while they were searching for it and spent an hour helping them look for it. They ended up leaving and sure enough I found it 15 minutes later. Never saw them again. I don't have a name or a number.
I was inside again yesterday but didn't make it up to that level, not sure if it's still there.
I don't believe that story. I think it belonged to the diamond drillers along with the trailer. It had mine safety equipment and tools with it.
FYI: 600v is smart. For every double in voltage, amperage is cut in half; requiring a thinner wire to transport the same amount of wattage/current.
yes sir. Our mine has 12,470 v to the back of the power center. From there everything is from 600v to 995v.

When we were caught up om tramming ore on day shift. We would sometimes go and help the diamond drillers set up there drills to core sample. Pretty slick machines. BUT VERY NOISY. 150 dbs? Of course we wore hearing protection. A jack leg or stoper 120 dbs? This was in the Con mine in Yellowknife NWT. 1973 - 1974

That road has been gated and guarded at the bottom for the last couple of years. Camped up there a few times 5 or 6 years ago. Tried to drive up to that upper portal with the camper on the truck. Lost traction part way up and just started sliding back down. Pretty steep. Cam

Love a modern mine, there's just something about the sheer scale (and engineering) of them.. I know people like the oldies because it was harder mining and I don't not appreciate them, but mines like this are super cool to me. The bacon strips on the back of that huge void you were in are nuts - obviously wouldn't have been so nuts because they mined down from the top, but still..

Holy Moly! THAT is one HUGE operation!! Nothing about that mine is small!....Hard to imagine all that work for only 3 years of operation too. As you pointed out Frank,..those Steel "I" beams are ridiculously thick! I can only start to imagine the time and manpower involved in getting that place operational! Geez! Those are the biggest cart tracks I have seen yet too! I would imagine that carts would have been huge too. You mentioned in your intro above, that this mine produced 1,354 Kilo's of Gold in the thgree years of operation. Based on Todays prices that is $80 Million, 374 Thousand ,726 Bucks!! $80,374,726.00 !! I guess they could afford to buy those thick Steel "I" beams! Lol! Thanks for the wonderful dialogue as you walk along Frank,..I have learned a ton of stuff off you by your wise method of videography. There is nothing boring at all, watching you walk along...we all know we are going to see something unusual just around the next bend! :o)

It’s amazing that they just up and leave and leave everything there , and leave it open lol in the uk u can’t u have to seal them off there’s only a few that’s still open . Most of the tin and copper mines closed and sealed in Devon and Cornwall . Most lead mines in Derbyshire closed and sealed all the coal mines closed and sealed in Kent , Leicestershire , Nottinghamshire , Yorkshire south and north Wales Scotland , but there are trying to reopen a coal mine in Cumbria for coaking coal
Hi, Frank and Sharon, thanks for this great (and I DO mean GREAT) Explore. There were quite a few times when it appeared that this massive mine is just in the off season and that the owners/operators will be back to work in a few months. I find it difficult to wrap my mind around the size of this facility and that they could just walk away from so much valuable equipment, or is it just that the cost of recovering the equipment would exceed it's value by too much? God Bless and stay safe and keep these super videos coming.

Those icicles looked so pretty, they almost looked like huge stalactites hanging down, it reminds me of that beautiful crystal cave that was found which was absolutely stunning to see. I spent 15 years in an underground coalmine in Colorado. I noticed at the 11:42 mark on the video that was a pump.
That ledge with the pillar looked like something out of a movie!
The mill building was taken out a few years ago.Only thing left is the ball and rod tumblers.A company has taken over the mine for gold mining.Apparently the mine still has a mining certificate.Who ever took the mine over was going to reclaim the tailings pond.There is reported 27000 ounces in the pond's muck.
According to minfile they only recovered 50% of the gold in the mill!
@@exploringabandonedmines The gold from the mine was "mist" gold.The mine when operating could not capture all the gold.The tailings contained 50% of the gold.Pumped up the hill into the tailings pond.The mine suffered a disaster when the tailings pond,up the hill, broke and took out the north end of the mill.The mine was abandoned and the heat system was shut off.The heavy snow pack took the building down.The book "The New Gold Rush"Frank Keane gives a good write on the mine

That diamond drill and other equipment looks in great shape.
I'd hate getting impaled by those icicles a couple must be pushing close to 80 lbs.. Those bins have some huge chains !! The main haulage way is a monster - tall people don't have to watch the clearance for their heads. That's a huge core drill. Good sized pillars - it would be interesting to see what they recover from them. Thanks for the tour and the video !!!
Reopening that mine would be one heck of a financial burden, even as preserved as the mill, etc, seem to be. They would have to find massive amounts of worthwhile ore left to make it feasible! Thanks for the tour, all!

There was an abandoned Dust mil here. Agricultural lime for fields. It was a long ball mill. Crushed limestone. When I was a kid I got my slingshot ammo there. Bowling ball size balls worn down to half inch or less dumped out on the ground.
That would of saved me so many hours of mowing lawns, shoveling, and delivering papers. I went through way more BBs, i bet there's 50 lbs in my parents back yard/fence.

This is a huge mine, if they used trucks to haul ore out. Something tells me the trucks dumped ore, huge pieces to be crushed by the mill, to be taken out by belts to be processed.. That is a huge piece of equipment for drilling.

It’s usually as they anticipate returning at some point, or because the cost of hauling it out is more than the gears worth
The drilling equipment wasn't abandoned. I know the owners of the company. It is being stored over winter and the job is set to restart later in the year.
@@jarrkozero9570 how long has it been just sitting there. Has it been there since the 80’s ?? It doesn’t look like it’s being stored because it’s still in a spot where it was drilling last. If just being stored it wouldn’t be sitting where it was. Why is it open for people to go through it?? Many questions I hope someone can answer thanks

Excellent production Frank. I was impressed with the size of those chambers. You need to try that 100 K Lumen flashlight Brent from Cerro Gordo was testing.
I think there is a lot of bs about lumens in flashlights. We just got a 12,000 lumen one and it is way brighter than our 90,000 lumen light!

You should have gone further into the mine. There use to be a old dirt bike in there, close to the bottom of the mine. There are some very large stopes and miles of tunnels. On the haulage level if you went to the end, there is a solid wall of quartz, and there use to be a pipe that had well over 100PSI of water coming out of it. Most of the gold from Caroline Mine ended up in the tailings pond. They ran without a metallurgical engineer on staff and that was a death sentence for that mine. The tailings might be reworked at some time. In the Emancipation mine you will see a ton of quartz. They also mined soapstone out of the Emancipation mine. There is some beautiful green stone schist close to the soap stone area. I spent may days exploring the Siwash Creek area north of Caroline mines. Excellent placer mining, but extremely hard to access. Very historical area. Siwash creek had a mine, sawmill, and town site. Not much left. Just some old rails and the odd piece of metal.
We got as far as we could get.
I always wonder if a lot of these mines ever really broke even. With all the cost blood and treasure just to get up and running and to mine itself.
man power was cheap back in the day, dynamite, wood...the thing was if you hit a significant vein you made money and easily had enough left over 200 other test mines

575V is a common 3 phase voltage in Canada, the higher the voltage the smaller the wire, it adds up when you are running hundreds or thousands of feet.

No danger of falling up, but a danger of things like rocks falling down

I've got two open cut massive holes total destruction just slag left no real growth or grass or wildlife silent as the grave when shut. Open noise 24 / 52 hello up the valley. Echos....
I wish we had mines like this in Ontario.
The last diamond drill I ran was hydraulic it ran off the hydraulics on a754 Bobcat skid loader. My lighting was also from the Bobcat

Sounds more like pressurized water. Has that wet quality to it.
Falling water down a steep decline.
Sounds exactly like a leak, just naturally high pressure water from being 900ft underground, spraying through a crack in the rock, like a spray can nozzle . At one point in the video you can see water pumping straight out of the rock wall like a hose, pretty crazy actually, I wouldn't want to be down there when the rock gives away, that's a hell of a lot of water somewhere lol

I acually have been in this mine qround 10 years ago. Had originaly went up for the natural hot springs..the free ones..

I did the math. If Frank and Sharon explored one abandoned mine in BC per week, it would take them 34 years and 3 months to do them all. Not much chance they will run out.

I spend a lot of time doing research on old mines. I also explore the mines in the Peachland BC area. I've been to about 27 of the 35 in this area. Also try to help out Frank with research when I can. He's a pretty cool guy in person.
