Technically, in Canada you might not even be able to fly your drone in the middle of nowhere as the interim law states you cannot be within 75m of an animal. As animal is not specially defined you would have to assume it refers to Animalia. As such even spiders, worms, moths, etc, are considered animals... Good job to the Transport Minister for turning Canada into basically a no fly zone for drones. People really do need to make some noise about this draconian interm law.
Although you are correct that it does not clearly define "animals", I think it would be reasonable to assume this part of the regulation was put in place to protect creatures which are larger than insects. As long as you're not buzzing over a herd of dairy cows, harassing your neighbors dog, or trying to get a closer look at a mother bear and her cubs in the wild, you're probably ok.
+BananaDoe But that's already illegal under current laws. I mean where I live we have good rules on drones, not within 30m of property, main roads or animals. Under 120m in the cities. That's pretty much it. The argument that drones are a backyard spying risk is really a silly one anyway, anyone who lives on the side of a hill and has a smartphone can film someone elses backyard.
Kinda like guns right, good people will use them recreationally, but there will always be bad people behind them as well. If you say guns kill yes, they do, but there has been evidence, that people mod drones, to equip guns to them, to pull off a murder. However considering there has been a few cases, in the last couple of years since drones have become popular, and the equipment to put a gun on a drone to be "less then ideal' to work with, the major scenario is people using the drones to spy and be peeping toms.
The drone laws are absolutely ridiculous in almost every first world country out there. I live in Hong Kong and the laws here are incredibly relaxed. The amount of incidents here VS population is very low and I love the ability to fly my mavic when and where I want. The system here is more education based on how to fly your drone responsibly rather than a system that punishes you and doesn't instruct you or give advice. Nanny states are becoming far to over the top. These drones are so safe now days but he governments treat them like they are uncontrollable quad copters that you purchased for your 10 year old off of amazon.
or, you can say it is a toy for your 10 year old... and then tell the cops to fuck off. I see no regs for the toys and gadgets that preceded them (oh i would always circle the quad copter with a cam, or skyplane with a cam in the toy catalogue growing up.) or the air hogs that they basically are.
Yeah.... nice try but here they have said that every over X amounts of grams (about 50gr I believe) is a UAV. And if over 2.5kg then you need a special license that costs about $1000 per year to renew.
See people? Don't fly there. See trees? Don't fly there. This gives us open ocean and a 500m distance limit under 90m high as useable space to fly. I can take my car (2 tonnes of metal) out for a drive whenever I want. But OOOH SHIT this dudes flying a 5 pound drone watch out
In Australia you can fly drones anywhere except: 120m (400ft) off the ground, within 30m of people, within 5.5km of an airport, at night, out of you eyesight, over houses, parks, beaches, sports ovals, etc. *But if you want to fly anywhere or make any money off flying one, you just need to have an RPA (remotely piloted aircraft) licence.*
(Sigh) people are way too scared over drones. In New Jersey, USA, I've been following most of the restrictions, and haven't gotten into trouble yet. A friend of mine is on the Township Committee, and I asked him if there were any restrictions about drones I should know about, and he said not to worry and enjoy my flying. In fact, in our town calendar this year, all the photos were taken with a DJI Inspire 1 drone!
In Estonia the laws for flying drones are also very restrictive. The maximum allowed height for drones is 500 feet everywhere. In controlled airspace (around major airports, hence in all the bigger towns as well)) you have to file for a permit at least 3 days before flying and call the air traffic control at the moment you are actually going to do it. A yearly permit costs €45 but you have to file for each flight separately.
In Canada and in the US got rules that you can in some way let you fly a drone somewhere. Where I'm from " Bahrain " is fully illegal to even own one or get it through shipping and it's illegal so sell locally so you can't even get one locally
We just got one of these at my work and it's so awesome. The main downside is that we are within 30 miles of Washington DC and we are technically not allowed to fly anything outside. Luckily we have a pretty big indoor area where we can fiddle with it but never really get to enjoy what it has to offer.
Smaller drones are definitely better with regards to wind performance so I'm surprised you mention this about the Mavic. If you've ever flown a drone with eight 28 inch propellers you'll know what I mean. Small, fast spinning rotors with high loading will fly in almost any wind you can imagine, but it's not efficient so flight times are low with these setups. Long flight time setup = bad wind performance to put it overly simple.
the drone laws are pretty good here in new zealand There are 12 key things that are required under Part 101 - you must: 1. not operate an aircraft that is 25 kg or larger and always ensure that it is safe to operate 2. at all times take all practicable steps to minimize hazards to persons, property and other aircraft (ie, don’t do anything hazardous) 3. fly only in daylight 4. give way to all crewed aircraft 5. be able to see the aircraft with your own eyes (eg, not through binoculars, a monitor, or smartphone) to ensure separation from other aircraft (or use an observer to do this in certain cases) 6. not fly your aircraft higher than 120 metres (400 feet) above ground level (unless certain conditions are met) 7. have knowledge of airspace restrictions that apply in the area you want to operate 8. not fly closer than four kilometres from any aerodrome (unless certain conditions are met) 9. when flying in controlled airspace, obtain an air traffic control clearance issued by Airways (via airshare My Flights) 10. not fly in special use airspace without the permission of the controlling authority of the area (e.g. military operating areas or restricted areas) 11. have consent from anyone you want to fly above 12. have the consent of the property owner or person in charge of the area you are wanting to fly above.
Vaex_Darastrix These rules seem very reasonable, they don't give exact distances and have some leeway for the pilots while still having basis for protection of property and lives. The reasonable precautions part is best.
Akshay Anand yea we are quite lucky, till some idiot comes along and blatantly ignores the rules and ruins it for everyone else. at least that's how it normally goes.
I did one sort of, I got a 6700k water cooled with an h60. 16gb of ram because I don't need more than that and I managed to fit a giant R9 Fury Nitro in there. Temps are pretty good under load but it gets kinda loud
thanks for being balanced and making sure viewers are aware of the laws around fpv :) I'm a pro Drone pilot in the UK and our laws basically make fpv illegal almost completely in the setup Lynus had. Our CAA says "the pilot in charge must maintain VLOS within 500m out and 400ft up at all times", meaning the person controlling the drone can NEVER wear fpv goggles. :( They can give them to a friend and pilot flys for them, however - but that's it.
In Australia, CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority - Government Department) has put many restrictions on flying RPA's (Remotely Piloted Aircraft), here are just a couple.... - You must only fly during the day, not at night. - You must only fly by visual line of sight (VLOS)-close enough to see, maintain orientation - You must fly no higher than 120 metres (400 feet) above ground level. - You must not fly any closer than 30 metres from other people. - You must not fly over populous areas, such as beaches, parks and sporting ovals. - You must not fly within 5.5 kilometres (3 nautical miles) of a controlled aerodrome-one with an operating control tower. Most of the rules you can understand, but it certainly limits how and where you can fly them over here in Oz
I'm still used to using 768p. In fact, the device I'm typing this is a 2015 Macbook Air with a 768p display that looks perfectly fine (don't get me wrong though, I'm a PC user with my main rig being a Dell 7559 gaming laptop, this Mac is just my school computer. However, since I've been spending more time doing schoolwork than playing games, and my 2nd monitor that is use to watch RUclips on my main rig is 768p, I still am totally used to it).
My first NPPL sortie made me appreciate the rules on drones when we had to do several circuits around the strip before a drone could be removed while our fuel was starting to run out
Well if drones ever become illegal or regulated to the point were not allowed to fly them really how we want its always a good thing to know you can get a para motor and fly un-regulated and with out restrictions really and carry people. To be honest which is more dangerous lol......
in my country we have multiple regulations based on how you want to use it, for "recreational" we have 50 meters from people 100 m from building and 150m from higly urbanized places and othervise if you want to make some money with it you need permission for work at sky but above it we have a thing called insertion X and it regulating how high i can go or a circle restricted area around airports. I fly only for recreational purpose with my FPV quad and i need to listen only first and last restrictions no one is asking me about permissions at the city edge...btw LTT look for some modular ones like from impulse RC or something else it could be a whole series about multicopters we have multiple wardware and software we are using and you can open a new world of tuning it to be a real beast :D
Yao Hu, Give some homebrew coders a few days with the headset and they'll be able to convert any video into something the headset can play. I've seen it done a zillion times with other weird video playback devices over the years. Heck, people were converting 3D movies to watch in the 3DS's Camera app within a few months of release.
You can actually get a UAV license with endorsments for things like the "line-of-sight" rule, or the "after dark" rules. At least in the US, we had to do that for our Search and Rescue teams, to use drones for that.
Got my mavic a week ago. Absolutely love it. I use it with an Epson Moverio AR headset as I'm still not sure about the DJI Googles... I kinda wished they made it more streamlined and not so bulky. If they had a camera built on the front so that your line of sight can be superimposed on the video feed that would be great. But as of now only the Moverio has that sorted. I just wished Epson would get off their butts and implement cam head tracking for their kit already.
From that FPV footage in the woods, that camera has some real sharpness issues in the upper left corner (no, it's not just because of the sun/light, most of the top left quarter of the video is a blur even after it pans to the left). Along with the compression, it looks pretty awful. Is this a retail version, or pre-production? I get that no two lenses are identical, but sharpness that bad in a fixed focal length lens should not happen in a shipping product.
I work at a US best buy and what we recommend is a drone club membership (though I forget which one) but for $75 a year pilots of drones get insurance coverage for any damages
The issue you have with the lack altitude adaptability is an unfortunate weakness of the accuracy and precision of using GPS for positioning; depending on device quality and technique it's position measurements can be 5~15 metres off. The Phantom 3 Pro had a proximity sensor on the underside, but those have very limited range. The usage of the stereo-cameras i know there's research for rangefinding using pattern matching and parallax, but that's a lot more processing for a unit like this.
FPV is first person view from a REAL world, VR is VIRTUAL reality. So yeah, basically Linus is the only drone reviewer who knows what he's talking about.
An alternative I'd like to see would be the ability to use a different headset (for example HTC Vive) connected to the controller or other DJI accessory. That would reduce weight on the head, as there wouldn't need to be a battery or antenna on the head.
drones should be licensed and checked for safety like cars are. that way the laws could be more relaxed for people who actually have licenses and a certified drone model that is safe to fly
legendp2011 it's generally not the drone that's unsafe, just the fucktard at the controls who doesn't give the slightest shit about anyone or anything. It's these people that have bought these drone laws on us all. The hardware and software is usually quite safe - you get the odd fly away, but it's not like it's raining uncontrolled drones out there. More chance of being struck by lightning than being hit in the head by one, but our bullshit Pollies just run around with their heads up their arses not understanding the problem.
Here in Sweden, we had an almost complete ban of flying drones. The exception was the police using it for investigation. But extremely many people complained and the government lifted the ban. Saying that the old rules still applied (not flying to high up, not near an airfield etc). The only thing they added was that the film can't be offensive or discriminating. So, if enough people complain, you have a very high chance of being able to fly again.
inb4 third person camera irl. I actually did that years ago with a DSLR + the old "cinema/theatre" glasses. Yeah. (oh yes, it worked very well, but I had to make someone grab it for me)
thank you for bringing the law about LOS in this video. this headset I think is meant for the exact situation you described, with a friend. and while the laws seem restrictive it is meant to keep maned air traffic safe, and a soon as someone as a hobbiest has an accident with a drone and an aircraft you can bet the restrictions will get more severe.
For that price you can build top end fpv racer. If you need camera platform then choose this if you want to fly fpv like a bird then dedicated racer is the way to go
Well if you look at the Drone Regulations in the Video there is a loophole. You can fly a Drone over a City as long as the Drone is 90m over the Ground and no Building is over 15m High XD.
Does wearing the VR headset break the line of sight rule? Wouldn't it be that as long your body is within LoS, you'd be okay? Plus you can use the drone to keep LoS with your body.
Dji is like the apple of drones. There is a large community of drone builders, who mostly build racing drones that are truly "manual". This means that there is often no auto level.
I think dji saw a lot users DIY their own vr goggles. So they release dji vr goggles. Also for safety, you need a friend with you when you use this goggles.
I can understand keeping them away from most of the things listed but 9km away that makes most areas in city limits out of bounds right off the bat shorten the distance to several hundred meters not kilometres
"How to get mugged in a park" by LTT. 1) Get your VR headset. 2) Put it on 3) A guy will proceed to take your personal belongings as you are in awe of your new flying thing. 4) Cry.
Darn, I kinda wish those goggles would work on my Phantom 3 4K... But you gotta give it to DJI when it comes to how far they have pushed drone technology!
FINALLY I CAN PLAY LIFE IN THIRDPERSON
Frigo still no bgm and map doh
Graphics are great, but the game play and story are crap.
For only $10000
Frigo GAMEPLAY OVER GRAPHICS IS *NEVER* A GOOD THING!

I'd use this to make an irl third person mode

that's actually dope

and yet the new regulations for drones make cars (which are far deadlier) a much smaller concern...
+Alex Neko ........than why not make it so you need a license for a drone, and that it is certified to be safe like cars are?
legendp2011 but that seems like a lot of work for the government
Careful, you might hit a ship.

Welcome to the fun world of consumer drone laws! Have fun...
Here's a video idea! Buy a Graphics Card on Alibaba, id like to see how they hold up to the real deal. :-)
In Canada and in the US got rules that you can in some way let you fly a drone somewhere.
Where I'm from " Bahrain " is fully illegal to even own one or get it through shipping and it's illegal so sell locally so you can't even get one locally
What is a bahrain. Thats the real question.
Mahmood Al Lang same here in dubai... it is quiet annoying, but im not a drone enthusiast anyways so it doesnt really affect me

Same shit in India - but it gets odd. You can't purchase or fly a drone there, but DJI SHIPS to India.

I live in Africa, I can confirm this is the case here as well.
You wouldn't download a drone?
Jacob Foster im talking about piracy as in downloading movies and games of torrent, buy a windows cd for $1 all that kind of good stuff.

Very cool, thanks for covering all the controls and vid feeds!
FUCK QUADCOPTERS I WANT A PREDATOR DRONE #AIRSTRIKE

that is way bigger than your...
wow
maybe?
From that FPV footage in the woods, that camera has some real sharpness issues in the upper left corner (no, it's not just because of the sun/light, most of the top left quarter of the video is a blur even after it pans to the left). Along with the compression, it looks pretty awful. Is this a retail version, or pre-production? I get that no two lenses are identical, but sharpness that bad in a fixed focal length lens should not happen in a shipping product.
I really like the new background for this kind of videos (being sit down, etc...), I think it makes the video better ;)
AS SMALL AS YOUR WHAT LINUS?!!
Be Carefull the zombies of Wrong Turn MOVIE in the same jungle !!!!!!1
fast squad
I work at a US best buy and what we recommend is a drone club membership (though I forget which one) but for $75 a year pilots of drones get insurance coverage for any damages
3:56 that's a beautiful shot. Picturesque one might even say.
As small as your what, Linus?
killitwithfire Man power.

Shut up
This Linus guy is getting a bit weird
I Am Sekou Lel
Konrad Czajkowski lel?
old virgins are weird
As a snowboarder it looks awsome
The issue you have with the lack altitude adaptability is an unfortunate weakness of the accuracy and precision of using GPS for positioning; depending on device quality and technique it's position measurements can be 5~15 metres off. The Phantom 3 Pro had a proximity sensor on the underside, but those have very limited range. The usage of the stereo-cameras i know there's research for rangefinding using pattern matching and parallax, but that's a lot more processing for a unit like this.
yey Linus says FPV and not Vr like all these stupid fake tech experts ☺️
leo ulreich He doesnt need friends, he has a bunch of emploeeys to mess with xD
FPV is first person view from a REAL world, VR is VIRTUAL reality. So yeah, basically Linus is the only drone reviewer who knows what he's talking about.
I want a drone bigger than my......
this one is just right for you then
hahahahahahaha hahahahahahaha savage!

hope in getting out of this miserable pathetic life. please end me.
You might as well use Google cardboard, with a feed of the drone from your phone, or if you have a hdmi out,. Use a vive
+Phantomthecat .......and thats exactly why we should license them. that way unlicensed people can't fuck it up for the rest of us
" It's these people that have bought these drone laws on us all" are you sure?
legendp2011
If this happen i will just don't buy a drone i will get realone it also need all that
Thinking big
+SHUBHAM PANCHAL......??? what? is English your native language. I'm not trying to be rude. I just do not know what you are trying to say

Yeah. (oh yes, it worked very well, but I had to make someone grab it for me)
dumb title
BaSkA if you think taxes are theft then you have no idea how the world works
Just because something is normal today it doesn't mean it's right. Study a bit more, son.
BaSkA wow you're such a smart snowflake

thank you for bringing the law about LOS in this video. this headset I think is meant for the exact situation you described, with a friend. and while the laws seem restrictive it is meant to keep maned air traffic safe, and a soon as someone as a hobbiest has an accident with a drone and an aircraft you can bet the restrictions will get more severe.
WOW this is for sure a sign, I've just been contemplating all day whether to get one of these or not.
I'm loving this new couch set great idea guys
For that price you can build top end fpv racer. If you need camera platform then choose this if you want to fly fpv like a bird then dedicated racer is the way to go
I don't know if anyone else noticed but the video and the video set were both really good! Keep it up!
"But that's tough for people like me, who frankly, just don't have any friends." Best thing Linus has ever said. I feel yah
Well if you look at the Drone Regulations in the Video there is a loophole. You can fly a Drone over a City as long as the Drone is 90m over the Ground and no Building is over 15m High XD.
5:40
*OMG*, Socks and Sandals DO NOT GO WELL DUDE XD
Does wearing the VR headset break the line of sight rule? Wouldn't it be that as long your body is within LoS, you'd be okay? Plus you can use the drone to keep LoS with your body.
Holy Mary, you're so lucky. I don't think I will get a hands on this amazing tech piece ever.
Dji is like the apple of drones. There is a large community of drone builders, who mostly build racing drones that are truly "manual". This means that there is often no auto level.
That water tower shot reminds me strongly of a place on Vancouver Island. Linus, did you take a trip?
I think dji saw a lot users DIY their own vr goggles. So they release dji vr goggles. Also for safety, you need a friend with you when you use this goggles.
I can understand keeping them away from most of the things listed but 9km away that makes most areas in city limits out of bounds right off the bat shorten the distance to several hundred meters not kilometres
Mavic air is leading the pack right now. Technology came a long way.
Oh man this would have been great for my Norway vacation two years ago
"How to get mugged in a park" by LTT.
1) Get your VR headset.
2) Put it on
3) A guy will proceed to take your personal belongings as you are in awe of your new flying thing.
4) Cry.
Can you like phase cool a xeon and see how high you can clock it, or maybe try nitrogen cooling?
Really liking the new set, is this replacing the old one, at least for use with smaller products? That map looks familiar
0:48 Oh Linus I love you.
Darn, I kinda wish those goggles would work on my Phantom 3 4K... But you gotta give it to DJI when it comes to how far they have pushed drone technology!
Line of sight? How is that defined? If you are flying via vr, you can technically / probably see part of the drone from the camera, right?
talk about crime when you see those sandels and socks @5.37 lol
awesome video Linus! I'd like to hear how well it works with the Inspire 2!
finally a semi review on the mavic
Lots of footage of Linus in a chase sequence ;) GET EM DRONE! GET EM!
Good review but you have forgotten the biggest concern how long can the battery hold out ?
the set looks pretty cool
