      I made a 30 second tutorial once and everyone kept saying it didn't work despite the fact that it still works in 2022. Literally just a tutorial on how to replace the cursor in a game by changing a couple PNGs. Don't know what's complicated about it.

    Great , now you've added water to your map , if you want fish in your water click on the entity tool and click on the water on your level . Next double click on the entity and type func_fish_pool press enter then click the browse button search for the fish you want then click ok then exit out of the item browsing window. And where you typed func_fish_pool click apply on the bottom right the entity you placed (which was originally a terrorist model) should now be a small red square keep the entity which now should be a fish slightly above the water load your map in and see if my VERY unclear guide helped you ;3

    Okay, two problems.
    1. Half the time my water is invisible, but I have NO leaks.
    2. Most the time, the top of my water is a solid brown-ish color and under-water looks a little weird. Again, NO leaks.
    Any ideas..?

      Sof2vidsTV I do that. I make the block a NoDraw texture and then I make just the top a water texture. Half the time when I go back to it, the whole block is a water texture. Idk what's wrong.

      are you using a custom texture or a normal texture? i dont know if changing from one to another will help but its worth a try

      same is happening with mine map. I have no leak but water is leaking so I called my lake: the hole of invisibility. when player enters the lake he is invisible

    I followed the steps, but when I try to play my map, the water is invisible, unless you are underwater.

      You most likely have a leak. And if you're using the hammer for gmod itself you've already done everything wrong.

      alexander idontwanttoentermyname The problem is is that Gmod uses a version of source that is VERY heavily modified. And with that comes lots of errors in hammer. What you should do, and this is what everyone usually does, is create the map in either CS:S or HL2 and then port it to Gmod.

      That's what happens when you have a leak. The black part (the "void") of the map where nothing is needs to be completely sealed off from all the stuff in your map, otherwise you'll have errors like invisible water that you only see underwater. The simplest way to do this is with a skybox that contains your entire map. Make sure all ends of the skybox are touching and that there is no leak to the void. The tiniest crack will cause all these problems. Also, make sure that any brush that seals your map from the void is NOT an entity, it needs to be part of the world.

    Forgive my noobishness, but why bother with the NODRAW texture at the start? Why not change it to the water texture just there?

      Water can only be used on the top face of any brush.

    Hey Philip, love your videos. They've helped me so much. I have a problem: I've followed these instructions exactly but the top of the water seems to have no texture in game. I've looked around for a long time but can't find any solutions. When I'm IN the water everything looks fine, but looking AT it there is just the effect you get looking into space. Thanks!

    If you haven't fix this yet then let me tell you why. Water doesn't seal in the level like a regular shape. Quick hide the water and look for spaces the water could spill out on to the void (if it was real water).

    ive tried toggleing the grid but that hasn't worked and ive tried mapping for different games aswell
    but only Team Fortress 2 has a grid, my guess is that its part of the tf2 source sdk update.
    (if you havent noticed theres a new option under applications in source sdk called itemtest but it seams to only be for TF2)

    My water doesn't seem to reflect entities (prop_static), even though I use expensive water. I have a cubemap attached, and there's only one water brush. It's all in one block. I have a skybox texture around it, and there are no leaks. What on earth am I doing wrong?

      You have a leak in your map. Click on map, then "Load Pointfile" if you see a red line, It will lead from a model to the outside of the map, where it can't be. Close it up, recompile, and you should be good to go!

    @3kliksphilip I tried a making a new map, I also tried loading another .VMF I had but that didn't work either.
    Right now I am re-installing Source SDK to see if that fixes it.
    Also, when I compile a map I receive an error. The error says something about a texture that I am using. I deleted all the blocks in my level that had the texture it said but it gave that error for every single texture I had.

    Whenever I make a body of water, I use nodraw on all sides except for the top, of course. When the map is compiled, I run it on gmod. When I swim inside of the water, I see nothing except the particles. So basically the underwater is invisible and the water on the top is visible. Help?

    I've been getting this issue where whenever I add any water to my map, it causes the map to turn into a void of nothingness. This was after deleting the skybox and ocean and making a whole new skybox and ocean to try to fix a weird issue where the red line that showed leaks just went into random directions and stopped in midair.
    Without any water, the map compiles and looks as expected, with my crudely made pirate ship floating in mid-air.
    With water, the map would appear as if there was no skybox or water until the player is submerged in the water.
    After recreating the skybox and water to a simple box rather than the cylinder shapes I used before (to make a "horizon" effect), the map now just dissappears completely when water is added.
    I've made another map with an ocean, and it had no such problems when I did the exact same thing. The only difference is that the map I'm working on now has a displacement texture to make a proper sandy beach on an island instead of the lame looking cylinder shape on my previous map. I also used the clipping tool a lot while making the pirate ship.
    I'm mapping for Garry's Mod using Hammer from CS:S's bin folder, by the way.
    Oh, and thanks for all these tutorials, they've given my mapmaking skills a lot of improvement.

    I had a similar problem to thecrazykid1297. I created the brush, made all of the sides NODRAW and the top a water texture, except when I test run the map the entire brush isn't even there. :/

    @3kliksphilip Hey 3kliks, everytime I bind a brush to a trigger( E.G. trigger brush to trigger_hurt) It just wipes it.
    What I mean is, I make the brush, I bind to the trigger_hurt, Save it then I close it. But it doesn't actually save it. It just gets wiped.

    @NSACLAN Can you copy and paste stuff from one map to another because it would be useful for solving stuff like this.

    Actually the Water was exaxtly as big as the skybox. I made it one smaller than the skybox but the (bug/feature) is still there.

    I've tried dev_water2, and 2fort_water, (I believe that's was they're called) but none of them worked. In the end of a frustrating hour, I decided to just fuck it.
    Though somehow, I came up with the idea that I could fake the water reflections by putting the same object up side down, directly beneath it. That's what I did, and it turned out as a success. The waves in the water made it look very realistic, and my brother didn't even notice that they weren't real reflections!

    I get the exact same problem. I've tried about 10 different water textures, but they all have the same issue.
