    I will share my gravy recipe too... I melt 2 tbsp butter in a skillet, add 2 tbsp flour and whisk for a couple of minutes till the flour is cooked. Add 2 c of meat juices and/or milk and whisk over low heat till thickened. Salt as needed. Very easy!!

    You can put more than one day of meat at a time in the fridge. Pull out ground beef, chicken and a roast on Sunday night. Those 3 meats will feed your family probably at least 6 days by eating leftovers. Roast will thaw last so cook it last…and so forth.

    I agree with Tawra that you save so much buying the store brand instead of name brand. However, some people might have a spouse who insists on a certain name brand. My husband always insisted on Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup. I would make my own syrup & put it in the empty Mrs. Butterworth’s glass bottle. I did this for years until 1 day 1 of the kids dropped the glass bottle & it broke. My husband said he couldn’t eat the pancakes without the syrup. I said I would make syrup & did. My husband tasted some of the pancakes the kids didn’t eat & said this syrup tastes just like Mrs. Butterworth’s. From that day I made homemade syrup & stored in mason jar.

Your may be a faster learner than I am and you could see yourself doing better than I am at this current point. I think what matters most is that I am willing to learn and continue to seek helpful advice. I’m not sure that it is nice to judge another’s progress.

    I do a great job on sale /stock so $800 month for 4 adults. Breakfast lunch dinner. I thought I was doing pretty good BUT you hit the nail on the head for me like this video. I forgot to defrost, totally fold on my “once in a while “ treats,name brand and I’m still in stocking mode. I have to move into refilling when used mode. Thanks I couldn’t figure out why it’s always $800. Also please address the Covid panic buying I’m still experiencing. Ny I almost ran out of food and no fresh/frozen veggies super expensive. I have bought so many cans of (we like fresh/frozen) I am still panic buying. I don’t trust our local or federal government to not pull something again so I keep stocking. Anyone else doing this?

  • @OrganicMommaGA

    One thing that helps me not want to order out for meals is when I bring home the groceries, I take the time right then to "deal with it". If I get a large (family pack) of meat, at the very least I re-package into meal-sized packs when I get home. In the case of meats that will be cubed or otherwise cut up before cooking, I go ahead and put that work in first. I've also added the marinade to the freezer bags of meats to let it marinate as it freezes and complete marinating while it thaws. It saves a few minutes on really busy evenings. With fresh fruit that will be going in the refrigerator anyway, I go ahead and wash it first. A handful of apples will be washed, sliced, tossed in a bowl of lemon-water, and then drained and plaed in "snack bags" in the fridge (The rest of the apples stay at room temperature just fine). Bunches of grapes (on a rare sale or treat) are washed, de-stemmed, and placed in "snack bags" in the fridge. Because bananas always seem to be super-popular for only the first day or two at our house, any bananas left on the counter on day 3 get sliced and flash-frozen on a cookie sheet and then placed in freezer bags as an easy smoothie ingredient, "nice cream" ingredient, or a treat to dip in PB or homemade chocolate syrup. Also helpful is while supper for that night is cooking, I'm prepping components of the next night's meal. Stir-fry is a family favorite that takes almost no time to cook, but it seems like SO MUCH time to cut up all the veggies and meats. With the chopping up done the evening before and placed in resealable bags or containers in the fridge, it makes the next night a breeze to make supper. One more thing - if you've ever made homemade tortillas (either corn or flour), you'd never want to spend money on store-bought ones again. Five to ten minutes to make (after the first time) and they disappear almost as fast as they come off the pan. LOL

    Where do I start? Having a stockpile is fantastic! But you need to be eating from the stockpile or in time you will be throwing things out and that costs money and reduces your savings. One tip I will give everyone- If it fits in your budget buy a sous vide. People often think it is just for cooking meat but you can defrost in it! So if you forget to defrost something really early in the day you can still do it later in the day. Trust and believe I have done it:)

    I have done whole 30 before it definitely raises your grocery bill. But also oat milk is a grain and it is not allowed on whole30. Definitely do your research before shopping. And the best way to do it is going for meats and veg and fats. And a small amount of fruit. You can use coconut milk or almond milk but I can't have any added sugars in it. You also aren't allowed to use any artificial or natural sweeteners like stevia unless they changed it. Also one of the worst parts was all the dishes. And the initial head ache. I started a day before I went grocery shopping to start and that was awful having two small children in a grocery store and had that was going to explode while trying to read labels. So ve prepared and have a plan for the first week for sure!!!! Keep it simple!

    • @findingaway5512
      @findingaway5512 9 месяцев назад

      @@teresaellis895 it should be dairy free..... Gluten I would check the label. I have a daughter who is gluten free I know not all oats are gluten-free but I will say that she sometimes reacts to oats in general. Even gluten free ones. So something to be mindful of with oats or oat milk. And Oates themselves are gluten free but depending on how it's processed it might have gluten that accidentally gets into it. Just check label for it to say gluten free. Or if you were making it yourself like Tawra suggests use gluten free oats.

We have been going through our freezers (yes, freezers) and using up the "bits and bobs", leftovers that are too small for a meal for 2. I have used up much of the beef we've bought on sale. I have done that with the pantry as well. I realized we don't need 6 cans of baked beans, or whatever. I won't buy those again for a while. If you can come up with a better way to have it on hand to just use for those instances, I’m all ears. These are meals that are pretty much dump in a pot & marry all the flavors & boom it’s done. Some lady was featured on Facebook, She was spending 1400 on food for a family of 2 adults and 1 children. They were toting her great advice on cutting her budget to 700.00. LOL we spend 250.00 and keep a small pantry.

    Good evening - I keep a small plastic 'tub' for meat to defrost in, so each night I kind of have a mental check list and it includes checking to see what is for dinner the next day. I wash it each night after dinner.

    In addition to the expense, think of how much you’re contributing to your local landfill with all those plastic pods. I urge you to eliminate them. The “convenience” is just not worth it. Brew a full pot and store whatever you don’t drink in a day, in a Thermos. That will maintain the fresh flavor.

    I’ve done all these things like buying stuff not on sale or buying special treats. I also have a few items I bought because they are shelf stable, but I don’t really like them, so they sit there. It’s a good reminder to stick to buying items you like to eat and will use. I have ramen that we won’t eat unless it’s the last thing left. At least I only bought a few packages. Thanks for great reminders 😊

    Here in New Zealand I spent about $500 a week on food. We don't eat out at all. And I have a year stockpile. Feeds 4 people plus a lot of visitors. Ps norm is probably $400 so extra $100 is my prepping

    I have not heard you talk about saving your potato water and vegetable water to make gravy. I never use just plain water.

    Telling my husband “no more hunting until it becomes economical” would be like saying “I would like a divorce”. Hunting for him is not only for the meat it provides but for spending time with sons and grandsons/granddaughters.

      If done right you can get your venison cost to about $1.00/# by learning to can it or dehydrate it. So, as long as successful you can't beat the price. Also, seasoned hunters don't spend money on camp sites they go to the forest or nearby lands 😁
      Tawra prolly didn't know that 😁
      But really it depends on what you pay to process it. Don't spend a lot and you get a deal.
      My bf wouldn't exist without hunting. 🤣

      I had to laugh when I saw your comment. So true about the hunting. We don’t use it to save money on groceries but to be ethical hunters and not waste what God gave us.

      Hunting is more about family time than saving money. It’s definitely not cheaper.

      @@ALETA-SUE that's a matter of opinion. My bow was $350 dollars. If I get 2 deer a year using a $15 broad head each time and pay $60 to process it and $50 for my tag but I get 2-3 deer a year It's a much cheaper way to feed the family than if I pay for beef that could be on a recall list once a year at $3.50/# as a woman even I can see how the benefit is 3 fold. The bow is paid for so the only cost is processing and tag. If you process them yourself you paid $80 for 100#+/- of meat.

      My husband just got started on bow hunting deer. Oh my!!! Add in the SCENTLOK camouflage clothing ( cooler and warmer), dryer sheets that take the scent from your clothing, unscented shower soap, stand, chair, bow strap to carry bow, camo backpack, smelly deer attraction spray stuff, warming socks and tags...we aren't saving ANYTHING. $$$ Hobby only! @@trustinJesus_only-_

    You can also get the little cups to fill with regular coffee for your Keurig. It's a pain but it saves money.

    • @margaretbedwell3211
      @margaretbedwell3211 10 месяцев назад +1

      When you stop to think about it, if you didn't have a Keurig, you would be filling some other basket to make coffee. This way you are just filling a little basket. If it is because it is a little basket, just hold it over the container of coffee and if some spills it goes back in the container. Just a thought.

    You have to go thru your entire stockpile before making your grocery list. That’s what I do. And keep a running list on the frig to add items to as you run out. Paper lists with magnets on the back to stick on the frig and keep a pen near the list.
