A great tip to change up flavors is to crush up the freeze dried fruits and add them to the cakes and muffins and you won't believe how intense the flavor of your baked goods are. Good for icing, too.
I've finally found an item I regularly get cheaper than you! 😂 We regularly get Duke's mayonnaise BOGO for around $6. We take mayo seriously in the South. 😂
This is a great example of someone using your tips and making it work around high prices. She knows how to do it and proves the critics wrong! I am so glad you did this video.
Thank you for all you do. I love your family. You are right about only buying stuff on sell. I lost everything in my freezer few months ago 😪 it was old freezer had for 20 years. I've restocked again by using your advice. You hang in there. I wish we could change the world but we can't.
I just want to say, your hair is looking great. I love buying vegetables that do double duty. When I buy one large cabbage, I can make slaw, put some in a stir fry, make some sauerkraut for sausage, and so on. Cauliflower or broccoli tips can be roasted, put into soups, stalks made into slaw. I take one vegetable and make several dishes. Love that......
My daughter and I got ourselves tested for food allergies. Some of our allergies were the same, some were not. I began to make a game of eating veggies and fruits in some sort of rotation and meat as well. We ate veggies and fruits we'd never eaten before, but we did have variety. I found the hardest thing was going to the grocery store and standing for long periods of time, reading ingredients. Some things we usually ate went off our list of things to eat, but new things were added. One week I'd make a chicken/tomato recipe with canned pears as a desert; the following week I'd make some sort of beef with potatoes with applesauce for desert. The week after that I'd make pork and sauerkraut and have mandarin oranges for desert. If there were leftovers, into the freezer they went to reappear weeks later. It's doable.
At our City Market ( Kroger) food store I found discounted peppers, 2 green bags , 1 yellow bag. Each bag had 4-6 peppers discounted. Came home sliced up all peppers to freeze. I paid .99 cents per bag. Just a cheap way to have veggies for stir fry’s etc.
This was very good. It’s interesting to learn about gluten free meals. And Lisa gave a couple of interesting ideas for meals. I like the one about adding seeds and dates to a salad.
We have a neighbor that their son is allergic to a lot of stuff. He is especially allergic to peanuts. If he eats in a restaurant they have to make sure that nothing of his food can be fried in a skillet that had peanut oil in to fry something else. He also has to be gluten free, however if his mom makes the bread with spelt he can eat that and doesn’t get sick.
Tawra, my naturopath has me on a cow dairy free diet because there is a protein in cow milk that causes inflammation. But, I can use goat milk/cheese because it doesn't have that protien. I'm allergic to almost all grains but I can eat Millet bread.
When butter is expensive, look for other things to use before you use butter for something. In baking, use crisco if you can, for frying use bacon grease, for toast use peanut butter or jam. Save butter for special things.
I use your hot cocoa mix when I want to make a mocha coffee and I make your sweetened condensed milk minus the butter to mix with milk and vanilla to make my vanilla creamer. I also started making chai coffee by adding spices to my grounds...it's amazing! ☕
I freeze all kinds of things in glass jars. Freezer jams, applesauce, broth, tomato sauce, etc. Pretty anything that might not have sealed during the canning process.
I have made chocolate by adding cacao to coconut oil and sweetener. Sometimes with almonds and/or shredded coconut (ala almond joy or mounds). Pop it in ice cube trays to freeze and voila! Of course, I don’t have measurements/recipe. But it was super easy when I did it. Tons of recipes online. Look up fat bombs or Coconut oil chocolate recipes. I did an early version of one of Hailey Pomroy’s (fromFast Metabolism Diet) that utilizes xylitol as the sweetener. Since Keto has taken off, there are sooo many more.
One thing with cherry tomatoes. You can roast them. Put them in a jar with olive oil and basil. Will last over 6 months in the fridge for salads or whatever. Good when you're overwhelmed with garden cherry tomatoes. One plant depending on variety will produce hundreds like sweet million.
Butter is $2.97 at Albertsons here in California. Cheapest I have seen in a long time. I received a free 30 oz. jar of mayo as a reward at Save Mart. This week celery and yams are $0.29/lb. at Save Mart. There is usually a limit on the good deals here. Sometimes it’s a limit of one or two. ☹️
Her prices in Vancouver are a little more expensive then Ontario but not a lot. I do the same thing with kleenex, I buy mine at costco which is also Scotties and only on sale which is usually less then $1 a box. She's a very smart shopper.
I'd be curious to know what she orders when she goes out to eat.Make a list of what you order when eating out then try different recipes so you can make that food at home. I'm sure it will be cheaper and you already know that you like those meals
My husband eats Mayo like it's going out of style and of course with the upcoming holiday needed some mayo for tater salad and Walmart had their brand 15 Fl oz 2.12 a jar their Kraft jars went from 3.98 to 4.68 and Dukes mayo being 4.64 a jar.( they all were anywhere from 15 Fl to 30 Fl ounce jars)
Tawra, I am dairy free too, but I can do raw Jersey milk and I can eat cheeses that do not have calcium chloride in them. I think it’s a gut irritant. So only high quality cheeses for me too. Very worth it!
I wondered what your price books were really like, until I watched this. The way you do it, really makes a lot of sense.. Watching you do this really helps make sense of the book. Which is an excellent idea. Thank You Tawra and Mike, for showing how, to use the book right. Now Being in Alberta Canada, all I have to do is figure out how, I can buy one of these, and all 3 of your recipe books. Especially your Gluten Free Book. I just don't know anybody in the USA, That I could get to order them for me. It's too bad, because you sure would sell a lot more books, if you could sell out of country. But I can always try and make one of the grocery price books myself. Because knowing roughly, when they have these sales all the time would really help. Thanks Again. Hope Jill is Well.
I too have to follow this exciting diet lol. I have had success with making bread with soaked flour (not every day but for high days and holidays) Mary's Nest is very helpful here. I have made chocolate very successfully and easily Heidi at Rain Country is a brilliant source for that.
Only buy on sale ,dehydrate freeze and can. Don’t buy any tissues but use men’s handkerchiefs as my nose runs constantly and better on the tender nose. bought butter at Gerbes (AKA) Kroger for 1.79 a few months ago and froze half and pressure canned several pints. When I mentioned this to a Mennonite lady in line she about dropped her teeth and had never heard of canning butter.
That's awesome! I'm on a similar diet due to lots of intolerances, so I can't eat dairy, gluten, soy, corn, sugar (I can eat honey) or some of the preservatives. I'll have to try the sundried tomatoes & red peppers idea.... we call them capsicums. We made your hummus again today & froze half of it ready for my birthday in a couple of weeks. Tawra, have you ever made DF ice-cream? I'm about to try to hunt it on the internet to make a DF icecream cake. 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨
We make dairy free "one ingredient ice cream" from banana. I peel the bananas and put them in baggies in the freezer to always have some ready to go in the blender. The kids love it. I do often add cocoa powder, or do "Chocolate Covered Katie's" "nice cream" recipe for it, that's got pb and cocoa.
@@coffeemm1141 Great reminder to freeze bananas for an easy ice-cream! Thanks! I'm currently making DF yoghurt from coconut cream & coconut milk so I'm hoping that will turn out. I can buy it but this is much cheaper. 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨
Yea Tawra! My daughter lactose intolerant. FERMENTED seats up sugar in beer, cheese, bread. Italians say digestible they ferment 3 days for pizza Germans 1 week for bread fermentation same with cheese hard real aged cheese you may be able to eat
Thought about your videos when I was watching a video called Aldi in the USA vs Germany. Posted by Feli from Germany. She says prices r cheaper usually in Germany.
I eat the same thing Alot. Although I cook c different things for my husband and son, I just don't want it. My new thing is raw apples and caramel and homemade veggie soup and roasted sweet potatoes.
Where the cheese is concerned I also found out the Parmesan, because it’s not considered a hard cheese, does not contribute to migraines which is great news. I tried these Thanksgiving sales at Aldi and Walmart the past few weeks and I have to tell you I’m highly disappointed. They have a sale on a few items very few and not everything that’s on your dinner menu. I got my limit of butter at Aldi which was 2.99 a pound and I got six and I bought a few other things but other than that the prices at Aldi were actually higher than Walmart. So the good thing is my son is going to make the turkey this year so I only have to do the sides and desert. I can save my turkey for Christmas or any other time during the year.
Our Aldi butter was 2.49 a pound. It's wild how their prices vary. Sugar was cheaper than alot of the stores in our area that had it on sale. But I definitely got my can goods and boxed items and turkey cheaper on sale at other stores.
Safeway here in Phoenix Az had Challenger butter 1 lb $1.79 limit 2 digital coupon. Large dozen eggs 99 cents limit 3 digital coupon. 5lb russet potatoes 69 cents limit 2 digital coupon. Spent $8.00
@@JustCookIt813 thank you for your reply. I mostly use the powder extract. I guess they must dry it. I also am in Florida and have grown it a couple of times. I use the dry herb mostly in teas.
My daughter is gf & df and of course loves those things what we do is but the dairy free mozzarella and she puts it sparingly in things. I know they are expensive but she uses it more like a treat on some things instead of a staple.
I have allergies to milk and cheese, and my husband has celiac's disease. So cooking for the two of us is a real pain. Can I make gluten free Bread, in a Bread Making Machine? I really would like to know. If so, I am going to buy a bred making machine and make our own.
