Minimum pitch for shingles is 2/12. I know yours is 2.25/12 but anything less than 4/12 is advised to have extra underlay and more Ice and Water to reduce moisture wicking to the decking as snow is more likely to sit on roofs less than 4/12. In some areas local code won’t even allow shingles on pitches under 4/12 and some manufacturers have a reduced warranty on roofs less than 4/12.

Metal roof along with solar power if you can at least plan for it over time. Also heat pump. Mine has paid for itself is cost savings over natural gas in the Pacific Northwest in Portland/Vancouver metro area.
The best way to water tight a window is to caulk top and both sides, add window, nail 3sides and a couple loss bottom then tape top and side flange to seal the water then bring the top wall covering down on top of tape.
Seeing Riley in the man basket saying he's making a carnival ride out of it, made me think of last Christmas.. I hope you get the train out again this year now that Oliver is big enough for it! 🎉 🚂🚃🚃🎡🎪 xx
Glad you were able to work through the frustration. It’s okay for things not to go right and to feel bad about it. I hope you know we don’t expect you to be cheerful all the time!
Due to the low roof pitch, Christine recommends metal roof. If you guys do put shingles, you need to do another layer of underlayment on the roof to make 2 layers.
Living in the forest you need a metal roof for fire protection. Use fiber cement for siding, Clear about 50 feet around your home. No trees or shrubs within that 50 feet.
@@SegoMan ok keyboard warrior I build in the middle of the Nicollet forest and I'll bet only3 percent of the homes have metal roofing We get on average 5 plus feet a snow on a average year up to 10ft on a good one Forest fires aren't much of a problem here because we have common sense
Although most county codes require 6’ of ice and water shield we covered our entire roof with it, from peak to eves. It didn’t cost much more, provides slightly more insulation and protection from tree damage. Plus it was helpful because I did the roof myself and there was a few week gap between the underlayment and shingle installation so it was like a roof on top of a roof in the end. That ice and water shield is some amazing stuff. When I installed new vinyl siding I put a single layer of ice and water shield around the entire home where the sill plate meets the foundation. Water splashback will never cause me headaches. Love this house design.
Riley, when we reroofed a few years ago we changed over to a standing ridge dark green metal roof. We love it. The roof will outlast us. I think it is the only one in the city limits. It does cost a little more but might cheaper in the long run.
Lookin' good! Riley, it's always a god sign when your life mate still likes to play with you ! Love how this adventure is coming along; has Christopher offered an opinion?
On top of your roof plywood and sheathing, I would suggest installing 4'x8' foil covered, on one side, styrofoam sheets, in-between 1'x4" treated or OSB boards as roof battens. And then attach the 24 or 26 gauge steel to the battens. We use 29 gauge in Louisiana where there's no anticipated snow load. A cheap solution for a lot more insulation. Also, seek advice about the roof color. I like gavelume (not painted, silver in color) for it's sun reflective qualities. Since it is just as cold in North Idaho, as it is hot in Louisiana; you may want a more absorbent, darker color. Good fortunes for the rest of y'all's build. Just saw your RV trip home, and this video. Entertaining, new subscriber!! Be careful.
METAL ROOF, ONLY! lol Seriously, I installed roofing for over 10 years and my suggestion, Install a Metal Roof. Suggestion, go take a drive and look at all the 100-year-old barns falling apart, the WOOD is falling apart, the Metal Roofs are still intact. lol Common Sence. Just my opinion. Great Channel, wish you all luck in all you do. Great FUN Channel here. - Bill Cragg
I froze the frame at the very beginning (went back 3 times to catch it!) and Olivers smile while he's riding on Riley's shoulders is priceless! Really that would be a picture to frame and cherish. Love your videos - Thank you!
I want to add my recommendation for a metal roof as well. Don't believe the naysayers when they say stuff like, it's noisy, or it's hot, none of that is true. We got two metal roofs installed, one on my father's house and one on our house. As for the noise, it's simply is not majorly louder than a traditional roof. In my dad's house you can hear the rain but it's not loud at all and at our house you can't hear it at all which I suspect is because of the extra insulation from the underlying roof structure which is different than my dad's. Some people think that a metal roof is like an old tin roof on a barn, but the new ones with the good seemed metal are light years ahead of what most people think they are. The other thing if you decide to do a metal roof is choosing your colors carefully. They have everything from a plain steel galvanized roof to any exotic color you could possibly imagine. But be aware of the color because after years it will fade and it also might affect heat absorption and reflection. We live in the desert Southwest so we went with a white roof to reflect the heat from the Sun. I'm told the roof Will not begin to fade for about 10 to 12 years then it will slowly lose its luster (It's a fairly shiny white now) and become more of a flat white for the rest of its life. Just some thoughts my friends keep up the channel and enjoy your family and your life!
Wow,love the video of hard work, pranks, humor, and best of all knowledge between all of you! Can't get enough of this channel! Can't wait to see what's next!😊❤
Former General Contractor and roofing company owner here. In your geographical area and because of the slope of your roof I would have advised you to use the Water and Ice Shield on the entire roof and then go over that with your staple down underlayment. Yes, I understand my suggestion can be viewed as overkill but I have never had a leak on any roof I designed. Also, again considering your geographical area and weather conditions I would suggest you go with a Standing Seam metal roof BUT make sure you get a heavy gauge metal, do not use purlin's as it will make the roof not walkable and snow weight will cause bowing and stretch of the metal causing stress on the screws.
for the small amount of money they would have spent extra you wonder why not. i always recommend doing the whole roof in I&W ., the peace of mind is priceless.
@@SegoMan I like and have always used Peel and Stick Ice and Water Shield with a minimum of a 6 inch overlap. Then, a Tyvek over top of that. Again, I understand that people will scream "overkill" but today's materials can NOT withstand WATER CONTACT. Roof damage today due to water can result in tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Why take that chance? I had a customer's home that had a slow roof leak and the water was slowly absorbed by the roofing strand board (also something I do NOT recommend) and the bill to fix everything came to $40,000+. A roof is nothing to go CHEAP on.
We do it that way around here on roof replacements because the weather is so unpredictable it's worth it to have the roof water tight right from the start.
Given the location you guys are in, i would do a metal roof. You will probably be able to install it faster too, even though materials will be more. I would then do closed cell spray foam under the roof deck/walls....it will be very efficient and quiet.

Lookin' good! Riley, it's always a god sign when your life mate still likes to play with you ! Love how this adventure is coming along; has Christopher offered an opinion?
4 years being hooked on your channel from Kenya my kinda people
Cool. I check to see if there anything new from my favorite channel and the result is that it was posted 18 seconds ago.
What a lovely couple, always together with Oliver. The house is becoming beautiful. Greetings from Santiago de Chile.
How did you get so lucky to have Andy? Great helper!!!
To help cut down on the noise and heat with a metal roof install furring strips first.
Anyway to keep Andy? The fun you all have makes people so happy. Thanks again for all of your great videos.
Great job Guy’s! The house is dried in! Oliver is growing so fast🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
I noticed it looks like you have a BOB stroller. We had that for our son. They are great!
metal roof is fire resistant
It really looks crazy how easy it is to build an house in the USA from a german perspektiv. It´s such a joy to follow that progress.
Happy Birthday Mary Hannah. Alls looking great on the Build !
For safe manoeuvre the big windows please use the suction cups with handle.😁
Wow,love the video of hard work, pranks, humor, and best of all knowledge between all of you! Can't get enough of this channel! Can't wait to see what's next!😊❤
Metal roof for such a low slope. Snow will slide off much easier, especially in the years you really get dumped on up there.
Love the video Guy's and love little Oliver big big Smile .💗
The ice shield is supposed to wrap around the fascia and then the drip edge goes on top. You will have leaks at the overhang when ice fills up there
Former General Contractor and roofing company owner here.
What's your opinion on the ZIP Sheeting System ?? I've heard both good and bad.. The SIP panel company I plan on using offers it as a option..
for the small amount of money they would have spent extra you wonder why not. i always recommend doing the whole roof in I&W ., the peace of mind is priceless.
We do it that way around here on roof replacements because the weather is so unpredictable it's worth it to have the roof water tight right from the start.
if it was a pitched roof there wouldn't be the weight of snow on it. . .. . .??
Given the location you guys are in, i would do a metal roof. You will probably be able to install it faster too, even though materials will be more. I would then do closed cell spray foam under the roof deck/walls....it will be very efficient and quiet.
Man basket + Andy = Rapid Progress :D
The roof grip guard has round targets for roofing nails. Never seen anyone use staples before.
