I like how they showed Laura in a very loose dress instead of regular clothes. They were paying attention to the fact that you don't have a baby and immediately fit into your old clothes.

She was a bit heavy when she got pregnant because she ate whatever she wanted. Once she found out that she was pregnant, she followed her OB doctors healthy meal plans. When she was discharge from the hospital, even her regular clothes were baggy!
This was Dick Van Dyke's favorite episode. A few seconds later Rob says to Mr. Peters "Why didn't you tell me?" and Peters says "And miss the look on your face?" LOL!!!!! By far one of the top 5 episodes of this brilliantly-written show.

I’ve binging this show for the last two weeks and let me tell you my jaw absolutely hit the ground with this scene. This episode one of the best in the series.

I remember in the show "the Middle" with Jerry Van Dyke. His brother (Dick) was coming to visit and he told his daughter in the law to move the otttoman because his brother would trip right over it when he came in the door. Very funny.
@@dj3114 Many recall that the opening sequence had a version where Rob (DvD) trips over that ottoman, and one where he notices it just in time and dodges to the side. But there was a third version few recall, where after he dodged it, he steps on his own foot and trips anyway.
Absolutely terrific show. My friend's father was a big fan and I recall how surprised he was to find out that I loved the show. He would watch a rerun and then "quiz" me on it to see if I could recall the episode. What a great show and great time. Just brilliant.
When Rob goes to the door and asks the Peters couple to come in, the audience had no clue that they were black until they walked in because Rob had kept saying they had the wrong baby. I read that the producers had to cut back to Laura when editing the show because the audience laugh was so long. This is what aired. It was brilliantly written.
You know what's so sad. Everyone thought it was going to be Valerie Harper since she had Brain Cancer and Mary dies. May she rest in peace. I remember when I was a Kid watching the Opening Sequence of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and admiring how Brave she was to drive halfway across the Country but in reality she was just Driving to another City.
I was a flight attendant years ago working first class from Atlanta to Las Vegas. Greg Morris was in first class. I remember it so well as he was such a friendly nice guy. I commented on how I was surprised at how tall he was. He said people often were since on Mission Impossible he was acting with very tall actors. We played blackjack in the galley for straws to pass the time! In all the years I flew, Greg Morris was one of the most memorable celebrities I met. Love this clip of him on the Dick Van Dyke show.
Yes, that was supposed to be Morris's reaction, in the script. The rest of the scene, is DVD asking why "didnt you tell me", and Morris says, wanted to see the look on your face. So, when Morris comes through the door, thats his character doing just that, reacting to seeing the "look on his face", which in character, Morris has that laugh.

Have you seen the “All in the Family” episode where Archie was in the hospital and got along wonderfully with his roommate? The curtain between their beds was always drawn so they couldn’t see each other but, eventually, his roommate went over to Archie’s bed to help him with something. That’s when Archie saw that he was black. The look on Carol O’Connor’s face was SO funny - the live audience couldn’t stop laughing. I think it’s equally as funny as this DvD Show moment.

krottfay Well it was all for entertainment.. Outside of the industry their was still Civil Rights being violated and for even those within the industry that some of there parts were type-cast.. I use to see Amos and Andy on TV and thought they were funny till I found it that on the radio version it was two white guys and at times they used black-face.. The world is in a Tizzy and has been headed towards what we have now since the Cuban Missile Crisis.. All in all.. Their programs were more entertaining and had very good plots.. The movies weren't as realistic and you still got the message.. I was very blessed to have seen that era of America. I applaud a lot of things the newer world is doing and I condemn other things, but FAMILY is the nucleus it means: F-Father and M-Mother, I , L-Love , Y-You

I recently started watching this on Netflix. I can't stop. Whenever I have free time between classes, work, and homework, I'm watching this. It is brilliant and way funnier than a lot of the stuff on tv today.

Laura's friendliness and acceptance of Mrs. Peters is so authentic! Two new mothers greeting each other is so nice. Yes, let Rob deal with his issue, but the ladies are so accommodating. Great scene!

What I love most about this episode is that I was born on the same day as Greg Morris's son in real life (Phil, now a prolific actor in his own right). Far as I know, though, my father never tried to have us switched. Probably just as well. I would have made a lousy Jackie Chiles on "Seinfeld".
This scene is a triumph, a 1-derful, glorious moment of TV history !!! The studio moguls feared about the outcome when the idea was originally pitched to them but Producer Sheldon Leonard (that bartender Nick in It's A Wonderful Life) convinced them that there would be absolutely no offense to the black people in the storyline, but quite the opposite, the joke is on Rob Petrie's character. Greg Morris' spontaneous reaction when he saw Dick Van Dyke's face only added more humor to the scene. Marvelous, respectful comedy !!! Could watch this a thousand times and enjoy it the same every time. And MTM was so beautiful, a great actress !!! Blessings from San Juan PR !!!

I actually found this show by accident. I don't remember anybody in my family, not even my Dad, watching the reruns. I didn't see this show till Nick at Nite in the early '90s. Fortunately, at the time I was watching Bullwinkle every day right before NAN and oftentimes I'd be too lazy to get up and I'd watch Get Smart too, and after that would be Dick Van Dyke. Which in turn led to me watching the Mary Tyler Moore show too!
Thanks to Tubi I am able to watch all 5 seasons of this great show, not only was the writing superb and the pacing sometimes at a manic hilarious level but also Dick Van Dykes dancing and physical comedy was the best I have ever seen, much better and inventive than John Ritter on "Threes Company".
I feel like Michael (Meathead) would have been the one freaking out about Gloria having the wrong baby, and that Archie would have bust a gut at Michael's stunned reaction to meeting the other parents.
I think the funniest one was when Rob thought Laura was an alien and she come out the closet on a million nuts. ahahaa OMG that is funny just thinking about it, then she had her back to him and said I can see you because she was supposed to have eyes in the back of her head. THAT was too funny.
What truly wonderful acting and writing. One sees in the sitcoms of that era how fully human the characters were, as much so as would be in a realistic drama. I'm afraid something has been lost since then as today the acting style leans toward a kind of cartoon reality, you know, with parody like comedic exaggeration. The Dick Van Dyke cast were people you felt you could really get to know...The bond between the audience and the characters at that time must have been much stronger...
Well said! With Rob and Laura and even other characters on the show we knew something about their lives before. They were believable characters. I've seen some sitcoms here and there where people sounded like they were just saying what was memorized, not really talking. The people on the "Dick Van Dyke Show" were people you could have met in real life. Maybe not quite as much but I also found the characters on "Roseanne" to be very much like people from my own life.
A lot of that has to do with the fact that in nineteen sixty three there are only three noteworks. Now there are hundreds. The talent pool has been spread out.

Greg Morris was a guest star on another DVD Show, it was an episode about a song that Rob wrote and a guy from his Army days basically stole it from him, Rob goes to this guys office and Morris' character is there also to see the song thief! I want to say the name of the song was "Bupkis" or something like that. The cut this clip too short.

As soon as I read the title, I knew exactly which episode it was. This was before Mr. Peters joined the Impossible Mission Task Force. (Greg Morris played Barney Collier on the TV series, "Mission Impossible.")
I still re-watch reruns of this show. This is SUCH a funny episode. There are so many - Unhy Uftz and The Ghost of A Chantz come to mind, but there is not a bad or boring episode. A great ensemble cast, great writing - a great show. I had to edit and add the one with the inflatable boat that comes in the mail.
Before I started the clip, I guessed the longest laugh was from the episode where Laura opens Rob's package and the self-inflatable boat opens. But this was good too

They are STILL simply perfect.
This is my all time favorite of all of the Duck Van Dyke shows. I temper it as a kid and have watched it too many times to remember and I still have time for one more look. Who ever wrote the script is a Genius !

I read that the show had to be stopped because the audience laughed so hard for so long.
I recently started watching this on Netflix. I can't stop. Whenever I have free time between classes, work, and homework, I'm watching this. It is brilliant and way funnier than a lot of the stuff on tv today.

Why should he keep a straight face? Even as his character it was funny. They cut off the lines where Rob asked "Why didn't you tell me?" and Greg responded "And miss the look on your face?"
It's shame there is no copy of the unedited version--Dick has said most of it was taken out, as it went on and on and on...
This was hilarious and dealt with in such a good natured, classy and humorous way. Sad thing is there are folks today that would STILL find this "racist" and "offensive" if it aired as a current show today. Take me back to the easy going times, man lol. Thank God for METV.
If you have over the air television the Decades channels shows 4 episodes a day. Two at 3:00 PM and two at 10:00 PM EST.

Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith Show were some of the best written and performed shows in TV history. They will endure as classics and were way ahead of their time in humor. Floyd the barber and Barney...Lol!
What I love most about this episode is that I was born on the same day as Greg Morris's son in real life (Phil, now a prolific actor in his own right). Far as I know, though, my father never tried to have us switched.

This scene is a triumph, a 1-derful, glorious moment of TV history !!! The studio moguls feared about the outcome when the idea was originally pitched to them but Producer Sheldon Leonard (that bartender Nick in It's A Wonderful Life) convinced them that there would be absolutely no offense to the black people in the storyline, but quite the opposite, the joke is on Rob Petrie's character. Greg Morris' spontaneous reaction when he saw Dick Van Dyke's face only added more humor to the scene. Marvelous, respectful comedy !!! Could watch this a thousand times and enjoy it the same every time. And MTM was so beautiful, a great actress !!!

Mr. Peters was played by Greg Morris (1933 - 1996). He was best known for portraying Barney Collier on 'Mission: Impossible' and Lt. David Nelson on 'Vega$.'

I keep thinking, if this concept had been used on Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm or Modern Family, or any other comedy today, it would end with slapped faces, humiliation and name-calling all around. I miss the days when kindness and forgiveness could also be considered funny.

I actually found this show by accident. I don't remember anybody in my family, not even my Dad, watching the reruns. I didn't see this show till Nick at Nite in the early '90s. Fortunately, at the time I was watching Bullwinkle every day right before NAN and oftentimes I'd be too lazy to get up and I'd watch Get Smart too, and after that would be Dick Van Dyke. Which in turn led to me watching the Mary Tyler Moore show too!
Thanks to Tubi I am able to watch all 5 seasons of this great show, not only was the writing superb and the pacing sometimes at a manic hilarious level but also Dick Van Dykes dancing and physical comedy was the best I have ever seen, much better and inventive than John Ritter on "Threes Company".

I think the funniest one was when Rob thought Laura was an alien and she come out the closet on a million nuts. ahahaa OMG that is funny just thinking about it, then she had her back to him and said I can see you because she was supposed to have eyes in the back of her head. THAT was too funny.
That one actually frightened me when I was seven years old. My maternal aunt was a ringer for Mary Tyler Moore and that really threw me too.

What truly wonderful acting and writing. One sees in the sitcoms of that era how fully human the characters were, as much so as would be in a realistic drama. I'm afraid something has been lost since then as today the acting style leans toward a kind of cartoon reality, you know, with parody like comedic exaggeration. The Dick Van Dyke cast were people you felt you could really get to know...The bond between the audience and the characters at that time must have been much stronger...
Well said! With Rob and Laura and even other characters on the show we knew something about their lives before. They were believable characters. I've seen some sitcoms here and there where people sounded like they were just saying what was memorized, not really talking. The people on the "Dick Van Dyke Show" were people you could have met in real life. Maybe not quite as much but I also found the characters on "Roseanne" to be very much like people from my own life.
A lot of that has to do with the fact that in nineteen sixty three there are only three noteworks. Now there are hundreds.
The talent pool has been spread out.

Greg Morris was a guest star on another DVD Show, it was an episode about a song that Rob wrote and a guy from his Army days basically stole it from him, Rob goes to this guys office and Morris' character is there also to see the song thief! I want to say the name of the song was "Bupkis" or something like that. The cut this clip too short.

This cut before the Peter’s revealed that they knew were aware of the comical mistake the whole time. Mr. peters said he wanted to see the look on Rob’s face when they showed up. That makes the scene even funnier.

I think this might have been the last episode of this show I ever saw. In the 70s, being rerun for the tenth time. I laughed like buggery at this. They were such a great couple. Bye Mary.
As soon as I read the title, I knew exactly which episode it was. This was before Mr. Peters joined the Impossible Mission Task Force. (Greg Morris played Barney Collier on the TV series, "Mission Impossible.")
I still re-watch reruns of this show. This is SUCH a funny episode. There are so many - Unhy Uftz and The Ghost of A Chantz come to mind, but there is not a bad or boring episode. A great ensemble cast, great writing - a great show. I had to edit and add the one with the inflatable boat that comes in the mail.
Uhny Uftz is in my top 5 along with Chantz.

It's interesting because there are at least three sitcom scenes that have been touted as having the longest studio audience laugh:
1. This one.
2. Sammy Davis Jr. kissing Archie Bunker.
3. Lucy and Ricky Ricardo dancing together, and all the eggs hidden in her blouse getting crushed.
Everyone had a good laugh and everyone was gracious about it. That would never happen today.
