Dick, Mary,Morey,Rose,Deacon,Larry& Carl...what can I,or ANYONE,say to adequately express the ABSOLUTE Appreciation &genuine LOVE for what they gave(and STILL give) us with this show!!
Jerry Paris was a great director and a favorite of the cast. The laying out of the last scene with Mel's pie in the face and taking his glasses off etc. was outstanding.
The timing had to be perfect with Rob stepping aside at just the right moment, makes me wonder how many pies in the face Mel got before that was down pat. LOL
@@bethb8276 I think that it was CRUCIAL that the cast got it right the first time, in order to capture the surprise of the studio audience. But, they must have practiced with a pie plate minus the pie. Maybe a plate with a towel in it to simulate the weight of the pie.
This was just perfect. Dick Van Dyke was such a fantastic performer in this series, and the guy who played Mel, Richard Deacon, was hysterical. Carl Riner as well. Funny stuff!!!!
This is my single favorite episode with Herbie Faye who is the epitome of New York Jewish humor and was a longtime friend of Carl Reiner. He was the lunch cart guy in several episodes as well as the lost and found man when Rob lost the script.
I really like the extras and the beginnings and ends, kinda makes me feel like I was there! Don't know where you found the extra footage, but it's great!
Did older shows just produce more episodes in a season, or was it just this show? Most half hour comedies did 24 episodes per season, but the DVD show was doing 32 episodes. That's amazing!
You’re so right! Now we may get 10 episodes per season! I also watch My Three Sons and they too have at least 24 episodes..sometimes more. Wishing for the old days.
Yes, it did. And there were 38 episodes in season two {two of them were repeats from season one, with new opening scenes}. Then they produced 33 episodes each for seasons three and four.....and the number started to slide from that point until they filmed 26 for the final season.
It's funny how in the early seasons they only filmed Carl Reiner from behind so as to keep his face hidden as much as possible. It was a running gag. Beginning in season 4 they cut that gag and he finally started to appear full-face.
this must've been the first episode where rob dodges the footstool in the opening credits. also, i think its the first appearance of carl reiner as alan brady. he did voices on the show and appeared as a writer in a previous episode but i think this is his debut as brady. he's perfect for that part. J.K. Simmons seems to channel alan brady in the role as J. Jonah Jameson in the "spiderman" movies.
Richard Deacon had a shy, sweet nature and had a hard time mixing with groups. He was always cooking homemade dishes to bring to the cast and it didn't help being gay in that boisterous crowd, but he learned to turn his character into the pompous ass Fred Rutherford on Beaver or his best role as whipping boy Mel Cooley.
I love the pledge to Crummy Buttons that Uncle Spunky does...He tells the kids to make a scene if they dont get their Crummy Buttons....I would have thought mothers would object to temper tamtrums.

Alan Brady is being groomed in his office like a Roman Emperor. Or like Al Capone in "The Untouchables." If Crummy Buttons are so popular, why does everyone say 'blech' when they are mentioned?
I've been watching the series on Peacock and I remembered the first two seasons had Rob tripping in the opening, and the third season opening shows Rob finally going around it, I didn't realize that s2 had him going around it too
During the original broadcast they alternated between openings, if I recall correctly. I could be wrong but that's what I've read repeatedly from other sources.
He made his first on screen appearance as "Alan" in "The Sleeping Brother" [March 28, 1962], when he "auditioned" Rob's brother Stacy at a party in the Petrie's living room. Carl was sitting in an easy chair, his back to the camera, waving a cigar. In "The Alan Brady Show Presents" [December 18, 1963], he appears on camera, with "Alan" dressed as "Santa" {and a beard obscuring his face}. He didn't start appearing as "himself" until 1964.
Richie sure goes to bed early. When does that kid eat supper? Rarely does he eat that meal with his parents. I stayed up until 10pm, as a child, and I had decent parents. I was able to watch TV all evening, during late 1960s and thru 1970s.
Not I... had to be in bed by 7p... until age 9, then could stay up until 8p... until 14, then up until 9p. The hardest was trying to go to sleep when it was still light out in the sunmertime.
Children need 8 hours of sleep... we never stayed up that late. You need rest for getting up early for school. Also, it's a made up show and it's not about the kid. 😂
Alan Brady was never funny. I've seen a number of comments saying how much they loathed him for the way he treated Mel. ALOT of people didn't like him (I'm just glad I'm not alone)

Did you steal it from Uncle Spunky?@@CamilleGG451
Not Deacon....it's Richard.
Deacon was his surname.
“ Thanks”

Yes, the actual pie wasn't used until the night the scene was filmed.
I don't think that was a live studio audience.
This was just perfect. Dick Van Dyke was such a fantastic performer in this series, and the guy who played Mel, Richard Deacon, was hysterical. Carl Riner as well. Funny stuff!!!!
Carl Reiner, not Riner, created the show.
Funny, indeed! 😅
I'm closing in on 70 and have enjoyed (loved) this show my whole life. 😊
Carl *Reiner
One of the classic episodes - small touches; I like the dart board surrounded by every single dart that managed to completely miss the target.
I absolutely love
Buddy Sorrell he makes me, laugh all the time with his cracks to poor, Mel Cooley
Yuck 🤣
Buddy and Sally are my favorite 😂
Most of them were created by Mel and Buddy. IRL they were good friends.
This is my single favorite episode with Herbie Faye who is the epitome of New York Jewish humor and was a longtime friend of Carl Reiner. He was the lunch cart guy in several episodes as well as the lost and found man when Rob lost the script.

I Love Lucy's original run did over 30 episodes per season.
Leave it to Beaver did 39 episodes a season from 1957-58 to 1962-63!
I wonder if 'Crummy Buttons' are as good as 'Potatoe Poopies'? 🤔
lol, well.... at least it's a better name
Don't forget about Cheese Dinkle's that was, mention in a couple of episodes.
@@drewpall2598 TDVDS had the best writers!
Marty Ragaway was a GREAT writer; he wrote a few episodes of the series, and was one of Red Skelton's writers for years.
the cereal Wheatie wow wows . Can't remember the episode but they spoofed about 5 cereal boxes.
It's funny how in the early seasons they only filmed Carl Reiner from behind so as to keep his face hidden as much as possible. It was a running gag.

I totally agree he was terrific
I know he makes this episode, Rose is cracking up
She looked lovely in that outfit
I feel so sorry for Mel

I know, me too

10:14 The chef joke had me laughing out loud 😹😹
My husband is a Bowler. I loved this episode. He bowls in an alley with 60 lanes. I’m trying to imagine 600 pins talking lol
That Snappy Serve guy had some good lines!
Herbie Faye was a GREAT character actor. He appeared several times as the "Snappy Service" man, and in other roles during the series.

If Crummy Buttons are so popular, why does everyone say 'blech' when they are mentioned?
Because EVERYONE knows just *how* bad they taste! You probably wouldn't catch "Uncle Spunky" eating them, either.😉
Writers writing about how hard it is to be a writer. Now they are on strike
Poor Mel.
I feel so sorry for Mel
Anybody else notice Laura is wearing the same outfit she wore when she posed for October Eve?
Jerry is Uncle Spunky
😲 Cool, I didn't know that! Thanks for info, I will watch it now with that in mind.
Yeah! I think you’re right! 😅
What awesome actors they all were!!! 🥰
Seems like most episodes had Rob stopping before tripping over the ottoman and just going around it.
That opening came later after the one where he actually tumbles over the ottoman, very athletic guy, and excellent at prat falls.

Originally telecast on May 8, 1963.
Exactly 60 years ago, almost to the day. OMG.
The first few seasons Alan Brady doesn't seem to show his face.
When did Carl Reiner start that?
He made his first on screen appearance as "Alan" in "The Sleeping Brother" [March 28, 1962], when he "auditioned" Rob's brother Stacy at a party in the Petrie's living room. poor mel so sad
Alan Brady was an evil genius.
Uncle Spunky?
He 's similar to Soupy Sales in that Soupy often got hit in the face with a pie, and occasionally zinged his guest stars with one.
Loved watching Soupy Sales! Especially his dog"Fluffy"!😊

I love the characters except sally she’s odd always talks about not being married she’s odd but mel buddy and Alan and sometimes rob are funny
It was relevant for that time.
It's a good thing you're in the minority
Sally was based on writer/comedienne Selma Diamond, who worked with Carl Reiner on "YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS". Selma's "act" often had her talking about how hard it was to find a husband and not being married [which she did frequently as a guest on "THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON" in the mid-1960's].
Rose Marie's real-life husband died while the DVD show was in progress
And she almost wanted to quit because of that. Carl, Sheldon, Dick and the cast persuaded her to stay.
