This was such a well written and performed sitcom
I love this show. If you guys dislike it so much stop watching.
Oh shut up.
Ya exactly 😊. No one is forcing you to watch😊
Thank you!!
$25 in early 60’s is about $200 today
Mary Tyler Moore's acting got much better after the first season.
Judging by some of the comments below, some folks have forgotten that this is a fictitious TV program and that 'Rob' and 'Laura' aren't authentic people. - Anyway, I loved this episode; it demonstrates the differences between ladies and gentlemen, something that will never change, no matter how many genders people pretend exist.
lol 'no matter how many genders exist'-love it. There are only two but gender identity are oh whatever suits whoever now. Cant find the eye roll emojil. Some of the comments are so condescendingly Millenial it takes the innocent fun out of watching this fictitious comedy show-they cannot see the innocence of the characters because they are already corrupted by cynicism and darkness and therefore compare the cuteness to modern day 'nasty flaws' You see what you are or know.
@@girsharma2076 Well said, my friend!
You're annoying too.
You are fictional
You are fictional
As he did many times, Carl Reiner was the voice-over announcer on this episode. This time he was the boxing match announcer on the t.v.
I didn’t catch that! Going back to watch the first part again. 😂
That's so cool 😎 such a good talent 👏🏻
Originally telecast on January 24, 1962.
Daisy. I agree with the comments about Laura interrupting Rob’s boxing 🥊 match on TV.
Instead of this episode being about “who loaned who” money,
it could revolve around a “knock down drag out fight” between the two, because of Laura’s insistence that Rob drop everything and look at that stupid
check!!
Rob was so funny at the last scene 🤣
This episode is brilliant, the sketch about the money was just like who's on first by Abbott & Costello.
Actualllly I'd like to think more like 2 10's for a five. rather than than who's on first ruclips.net/video/la2BVTLFQ94/видео.html&ab_channel=RobertPastorino
This proves exactly why I hate to borrow/loan people money 😹
I'm in my 60s, and I am still waiting to be repaid for multiple loans that I trusted so-called 'friends' to repay. As Polonius said: "Never a borrower or lender be." - "Loan oft loses both itself and friend, and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry."
And that's why I never borrow if I don't have enough money but if I don't I don't expect to get it back. I don't borrow myself from other people either because it would be bad to forget pay back. Unfortunately there are people who take advantage of nice people who can't say no.
imagining a world in which a $20 bill would be refused by a New York cab driver.........or, alternately, one in which a dollar would be enough for cab fare anywhere.
In 1961 you could Probably go from.manhatten to Brooklyn for $1 .......
Be like today giving a cabbie $100 bill for a $5 fare. They ain’t gonna like it!
Box graters haven't changed a bit!
Lots of more complicated gadgets to do the grating now. Some manual, and some using electricity.
If I couldn't remember if someone paid me back I wouldn't ask, if its important then you remember.
This was a great episode
Laura was annoying in this episode, she didn't need to know right that second about the check
I agree. That always bothered me.
It's what drives the story. Jeez.
It’s, you know, fiction writing - perfect characters are boring and don’t make an interesting story.
This is one of two episodes where Laura whines. The other is when the new car gets scratched.
Let's see...I'm right in the middle of an exciting fight/sport and she talks about some stuff that can't wait a minute? Sure Joe...
I really got fed up with Laura nagging and bugging Rob during the climactic end to the boxing match! Waiting a very few minutes wasn't going to cause any problems with their income tax getting done. 😠👎👎
You have to remember that Laura is only about 22 or 23 years old. When they got married she wrote down on the marriage license that she was 19, but in reality she was only 17. Given the fact that Richie is about 6 years old, that makes her about the right age that I wrote. That is why she does silly things like bothering Rob during the game. She isn't really grown up yet. And I believe that Dick Van Dyke wasn't sure about Laura because he didn't like the age difference. He was 34 at the time. So he is 34 and Laura is about 22. That is why she is immature many times in this series.
@@JesusismyRock773 Back then you were considered grown at 18. It's only these days you are not considered an adult till you are 30.
@@saran3214 Sad state of affairs, isn't it?
@@saran3214 25 actually - that is when your brain is fully developed.
@@JesusismyRock773 She's supposed to be about 28 actually, She and Rob were married for a few years before they had Richie.
Did women back then wear high heels around the house?
No. Never. Pure t.v. fiction.
Wow, Laura is so disrespectful to Rob in this episode. She couldn't wait five minutes to ask about $25! And all b/c she wants curtains.
The way of the future men and women always talk differently to each:-( other 40 plus years ago this was no different especially when money was concerned! It depends on the person:-) :-( from my experience this colour of relationship has not changed money darkens conversations in relationships
Laura Petrie was the perfect Stepford wife!
She needed an outside-of-the home career.
But ... she got one; a few years later she changed her name to Mary Richards and became an outstanding TV journalist.
Yeah, let tv and daycare raise their son.
Laura is nothing like a Stepford wife, who would never question or bother their husband. They were mindless obediant women.
I admit, Laura interrupting the fight for something so trivial that could easily have waited really bothered me. I will also admit that at least from my generation and up about 90% of the women I know would do that to their husband. You have to remember, in their mind their husband is ALWAYS watching sports, and they believe if they don't interrupt right then they won't just be waiting a minute. They will be waiting forever. They also seem to believe that when their husbands are watching sports they are basically being lazy and are refusing to help out around the house and with important things (like preparing for taxes). They also don't understand that there is something special about watching important moments in sports live and that those moments can come and go very quickly, and that honestly most husbands really wouldn't watch sports 24/7 unless they had their loving wife looking out for them and forcing them to occasionally pay attention to real life and getting the important things done.
To be clear, I think these women are wrong most of the time. Whether their husband is into sports or video gaming, if they would approach it in a very reasonable way most husbands might agree that as long as their wife allows them to watch sports or play video games in peace for a bit for agreed-upon times, they would happily agree to give their full attention to important things like doing taxes, spending time with the kids, or helping around the house with things like cleaning. Also, the women I know who act like they do all the work do just as much taking time for themselves. They just do different activities like shopping or diamond paintings or watching soap operas. Don't get me wrong, most people underestimate how much work it takes for life in general, so in a marriage that is 50/50 both partners will probably feel like they are doing 75% of the work. And many men may play more video games or watch more sports than is fair and healthy and many women may spend more time talking on the phone with friends or shopping than is fair and healthy. But the difference is that for some reason on average women think they get to complain more and act like the martyrs more, and they also feel entitled to be controlling and bossy and think it is no big deal to interrupt a game or fight even though they don't even understand the game or fight well enough to know when they are interrupting it right at its climax.
I guess what I'm saying is part of the reason this behavior infuriates me is because it is so true to life. Now perhaps the next generation has a different dynamic. I have no clue on that one. But like I said, for my generation this portrayal is spot on. Sure in something like 10% of relationships I don't see this dynamic, but women who behave like this towards their husbands is definitely the rule, not the exception.
In this episode buddy says Mel married Alan’s sister. But in the episode where they broke into Alan’s office Mel says that Alan didn’t invite him to his own sisters wedding.
Continuity error.
Alan could have had 2 sisters?
Just cuz he wasn’t invited to the wedding doesn’t mean they didn’t get married!
@@prettylilprincessclaireYeah but that would make Mel, Alan's half brother. Or they shared stepsisters and one of them Mel married. Or Alan married. Lol
I have understood from other episodes at least that Alan is married to Mels sister.
Laura was being a little aggressive and pushy with Rob here. The deduction of $25 on income tax payable probably amounted to about 25 cents, if that. Then she makes Rob feel like a bad citizen. No reason for all that pushback.
It blows my mind that Rob & Laura were ever considered a great couple. It's still a great show though.
There were a lot of better episodes displaying their relationship much better. They fight just like every other couple but still sincerely love and care for each other
Laura is so manipulative….
The show got better as it went along. Weak writing for Laura here.
QUIT INTERRUPTING!! 😑
Laura annoyed me bothering Rob about the money when he was watching boxing. She could have waited till he was done watching it. And I am a woman. I would never do that to my husband. Never disturb a man when he's watching sports. I am sure she wouldn't have liked it if he did that to her while watching something she liked and wanted to see. Couldn't pause things back then. 😂
It's a WONDER this marriage survived. But, in a manner of speaking, it didn't. The series was cancelled after five years!
find myself playing devils advocate for both in some of these epis. like him engrossed in the the fight, i woulda told her "please just wait til this round is through" & if she pulled my chin like that i'd have held her wrist til i was done watching. but then! when he started yelling close to her face, i'd've definitely told him dude dont scream in my face. glad i was born in the best time in history or else i'd be imprisoned back then😄
After 130 episodes. The show was a huge success. They ended it naturally, the show was going down in season 5 due to no new storylines.
@@xxwhispersxx2856 I agree! The DVD show was not cancelled by CBS; the cast, writers and producers chose to end it before it became stale.
When I view the episodes produced toward the end of the fifth season, it is clear (to me) the show was losing its "punch".
I've felt the same about the "Andy Griffith Show" (which was in production simultaneously with DVD. After its fifth season, Don Knott's left the show, and it went down hill. Not even the transition from B&W to color, nor the "new" characters could help it!
It wasn't cancelled. The producers decided to end the show while it was still on top. They did not want the quality to disintegrate.
@@randilevson9547 You are correct! The DVD show was ended amicably by the producers (and principle actors/actresses).
I have read in several articles (not completely sure of their veracity) that the five-year contract was expiring and up for renewal.
The producers and actors decided to call it "quits".
Who wears a tie and sweater at home?
Yeah, even Ward Cleaver lost the tie when he changed into his sweater. Lol
See I grew up to prefer this over I love Lucy, and I’ll tell you why lol
I have no hate for I love Lucy because it was the first sitcom EVER on TV, and was very ahead of its time in the 50s, I mean Lucile ball was the first women to be the main star of a sitcom, and she was the first woman on TV to dress casually, like wearing slacks instead of the iconic 1950s dress and pearls that every house wife wore on sitcoms of that era, but I just never cared for the 50s decade as much as most
I’m obsessed with the 60s because it was more edgy, the decade that changed everything ❤☮️✌🏼
And when dick van dyke came out his sitcom was even MORE ahead of its time , it tackled even more serous scenarios and topics and set out to portray every day real life marriage in an even more realistic way then ever, compared to I love Lucy show
And dick was way more witty and the dialog of the show with all the cast was more sophisticated and edgier then what was said in the 50s, 1960s lingo was becoming more modern, and care free and more like real life talking
Yes dick van dyke took a lot of inspiration from I love Lucy which is awsome but added more flare to it ✌🏼
