The danger for Ukraine was an over-expansion of the front due to Russian invasions in the north (such as in Kharkiv). The Ukrainians have now taken that away from the Russians by invading almost unmanned territory, getting lost there, and losing material and personnel that they urgently needed to defend the rest of the front.
If it wasn't Russian strategy, they couldn't have come up with a better idea. In the first few days, every strategist was surprised. Now it's suddenly supposed to be a masterstroke by the Ukrainians, followed by the Zelensky credo: More weapons, more money! More weapons, more money! More weapons, more money! The other big issue is in the summer of 23 the Russians knew and had prepared for a push on the robytne tokmak axis - now it could come anywhere along the border and will inevitably break through. This is like Germany trying to defend the entire line in 44 in the east and being manned so thin without sufficient defenses that a push can easily breach and blitz them. Russia is actually Germany in the North. It's terrifying but it's the truth. I wish the comments were actually sensible discussion of the reality rather than denial and NAFO quality delusion 😢

Pulling elite units from Dontesk to attack Kursk seems to be backfiring. Russians are gaining even more quickly than they had been, and the trades being made are not equal. Ukrainian troops are capturing more land, but most of it is either empty or small villages. Russians are capturing foritifications (some of them many years old), and taking towns (Niu York fell, Hrodivika falling quickly, Novohrodivka now under assault) and assaulting cities (fall of eastern citadel in Toretsk after loss of all the suburbs and the big waste heaps).
Kursk offensive is good PR, its embarassing for Putin, but in terms of ground being taken vs lost it seems a very poor practical use of troops that would be better utilized trying to help hold in Donetsk. If the Russians make it to Pokrovsk, the whole of Donbass will be in their grasp. Majority of UA supply there runs through it.

toretsk would be quite fast, the major challenge is the center citadel area, with the residential high rise and a major coal mine complex nearby. but given the fact that ukraine lack manpower and resources to counter attack, the russians might do what they did in new york to that mini industrial zone, they will just by pass it and effectively encircle them.
ukraine military is seriously melting (as expected), anyone remember Stepove? remember Berdychi? both sides would struggle for weeks in these small towns, now the Russians just walk right through.
but of course there is a chance that, some or a lot of reserves are held in ukraine, and they might go for another "offensive" elsewhere, since their move usually make no sense in a military stand point.

While history doesn't repeat, it certainly does rhyme. I look at the map for Kursk and I can't help but think of the battle of Poltava in 1709 where the Russians defeated the Swedes. That resulted in the end of the Swedish empire and established the Russian supremacy. When the Ukies fail in Kursk, troops from Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod could converge on Poltava. Poltava is a major hub and of great historical significance to the Russians. It might even result in the end of Ukraine and Nato(empire?).... All speculation but it feels like something the Russians would consider.

the Ukrainians can only advance in small penny packets of units because massing a large force is too dangerous for them. This means that assembling 100,000 soldiers, while it seems impressive on paper, isn't what it seems because the reinforcements will only drip into the combat in very small quantities that the Russian artillery and special forces in the security zone can handle, same as happened at Rabotino and Staromayorske. Spetsnaz and airborne units did everything there, while hundreds of thousands of bored conscripts waiting in the "Surovikin line" never even saw a Ukrainian soldier

Having high ground means scouts can be camouflaged in the hills, overlooking roads and passing information down the line of command. NATO tried to move in on foot into Serbia, through Albania but with initial cassaulties calculations (due to domestic terrain being mountains and hills) was 2:1 in favor of Serbia. Later on, when Serbia pulled it's army out of Kosovo, NATO reevaluated losses would be 4:1. In fact, NATO's Serbia campaign barely scratched Serbian army. You can look this up yourself.
On the other side, if Hungary allowed NATO to move into Serbia through Vojvodina, NATO army would absolutely demolish Serbian army - due to Vojvodina being flat as my ex's chest.

What's lost in Donbas every day, Ukraine will not get back, and although the Kursk offensive most likely will see some more temporary advances here and there, Ukraine's armour, troops and means of supply are steadily degraded because of Russia's air superiority, which eventually will make this offensive unsustainable, after which Russia might then even turn the table to establish a buffer zone in Ukraine against further such attacks from Ukraine/NATO.
