There are other channels that do a pretty good job of taking old PCs and painting them, or taking an angle grinder and cutting out a window to see the guts. You took everything out, and turned it into something really beautiful that anyone would love to have on their desk. The cardboard shroud was a pretty neat solution. Maybe for your next mod, you can contact a company that produces carbon fiber vinyl wrap, and really trick out an old PC case.

    Wow, that was surprisingly error-free build. How do you pick which HP to pick up? I've been avoiding them, as there were way to many 2nd and 3rd gen HP bios related horror stories - how did you pick out the good one?
    Over here, in our market, i7 2600 is almost as cheap, but the one I like is - 4th gen Asus. Their prebuilts cost maybe a bit more than the others (excluding stupidly overpriced dell), but offer off the shelf motherboards. Maybe you have those over there too?

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Год назад +4

      Oh really? BIOS horror stories huh. Is that like, errors that prevented booting? The guy who sold this to me said he knew 100% that it did work, apart from needing the jumpers on the USB connections (which I found out about after getting it home and testing it outside of the case first), my experience was error-free.

    • @youzernejm
      @youzernejm Год назад +1

      @@TechDweeb horror stories like, a bios that is somewhere half way between legacy and uefi, with plenty of uefi devices not working (newer gpus). Or, safeboot being impossible to turn off, with newer gpus not working. They even talked about two same models, from two different series working differently. Also, some boards top out at I think 35W for the pcie x16 slot, but this isn't bios related.
      Not my personal experience, mind you. I've heard this and decided to rather be safe than sorry. Haven't heard things like this on the 4th gen though. Gotta check the newer ones, as the 6th gen got sanely priced just recently over here.

    • @CFWhitman
      @CFWhitman Год назад

      @@youzernejm Any PCI-E x16 slot that doesn't provide 75W is not up to specifications and could easily be a problem for a computer in the office where they expect to be able to put in a low profile video card (in that setting usually an NVIDIA Quadro card or an AMD Pro card). I work in IT, and that would be something worthy of expressing our displeasure to the company that sold us the system. It's difficult for me to imagine a standard PC from HP, the make we use for the vast majority of our systems, having this issue. Whenever we've needed to put a low profile card in, it has worked as expected.

    • @youzernejm
      @youzernejm Год назад

      @@CFWhitman I've seen the boards that have the writing, eg 35W. Check out the images, there are such boards from other manufacturers too. Also, if you plop an nvs card, it's not like it'll use 75W, it'll be closer to 25. So, in this case your main issue would be if you can turn the safeboot off, or, if the card is in the list of qualified hardware (probably more important in corporate).

    I’m so glad I stumbled across this vid TD. HELP! I am a father of a very smart 8y/o son that REALLY wants a gaming PC. We simply don’t have the money for even a cheap pre built. I was thinking about a couple old towers I have in storage. 1 is an Emachines I bought in 2008-2009, the other is an HP I believe from maybe 2012-2014. Do you think either PC will be suitable? I really think he would enjoy and appreciate a first PC more if he had a hand in building it. This video has given me a lot of inspiration as I was feeling depressed because I knew I wouldn’t be able to buy him one for his birthday that’s in a month. Also, at 45, I have been out of the PC game for a while but you made me feel like I can do this. Do you have any other good resources for these type of builds? I have tears in my eyes, thank you so much TD.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hey buddy. Hard to say if either of those would work without knowing the processors. Generally if it's an old i5 or i7 it'll be fine, but an old i3 or a 'core 2' or whatever probably won't work well, you'd be better off getting even a cheap mini PC as it would perform better.
      As a general rule of thumb, if the old computer was cheap when you bought it, it'll probably not be good enough to be worth upgrading. But if the computer was mid-range or expensive when you bought it then the processor might still have some life left in it. If that's the case you'll want to make sure you have 16gb of ram, and some sort of GPU. Even an old GTX 900 series or better GPU would do the job, and those are pretty darn cheap. You might also need a power supply upgrade as pre-built computers usually don't have enough power to support GPU expansion. And definitely an SSD, that's hands down the best upgrade you can get for an old PC to make it feel fast and modern.
      It just comes down to how much performance you will get compared to just getting a cheap PC like a Mini PC. And obviously it'll depend on what kinds of games you want to play, if you want very graphically intensive games then you'll need to spend more to get that.
      Hope this helps!

    • @dsdahustla
      @dsdahustla 9 месяцев назад

      @@TechDweeb l guess my age is showing. I dug the 2 towers out of storage and one is a Dell Optiplex GX620 with a Pentium 4 HT, the other is a Emachines with an AMD Athlon II X2 and Nvidia graphics. I’m sure those are a little too dated huh? I will say, he will literally just play Roblox and maybe MSFS.

  • @CFWhitman
    @CFWhitman Год назад +1

    Something to be aware of is that if you have an eight pin connector on your video card rather than a six pin, it will need to be fed by two SATA connectors to ensure the wattage doesn't overload the wires/connectors and make them heat up and either fail or both fail and cause a fire.
    Another thing to be aware of is that having two different size RAM sticks will make it so it runs in single channel mode. Two RAM sticks must match and be in the correct slots to work as dual channel.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Год назад +2

      I believe you are mistaken about the ram. It's a myth that you need matching kits, or only sticks of the same size. You can test this yourself, try different configurations of RAM and check in cpu-z, you will see that even if you mix and match Ram kits they will still be running in dual Channel mode as long as you have them in the correct slots. I feel like I'm going to have to make it video on this topic because there's a lot of confusion about it.

    • @CFWhitman
      @CFWhitman Год назад

      @@TechDweeb Well, any difference in speed will just result in all your RAM running at the lower speed. It won't stop it from running in dual channel mode. When I said the modules must match, I meant in size.
      As far as dual channel memory goes. Intel (since 2004) has a mode called Flex Mode that allows part of your memory to run in dual channel mode and the rest to run in single channel mode (I read up on this since leaving my initial comment). So with this configuration you will have 8GB of dual channel RAM (the first 4GB of the 8GB stick along with the entire 4GB stick) and 4GB of single channel RAM (the other 4GB of the 8GB stick). However, there is no guarantee that all of the dual channel RAM will be used before any of the single channel RAM is used, so performance can be inconsistent. So far, I have been unable to confirm the existence of something like Intel's Flex Mode for AMD systems, so with what I know at present, I wouldn't expect it to work as dual channel on an AMD system.
      As a general rule of thumb, you are less likely to have memory issues if all your sticks of RAM are the same specifications.
