Clear coat is 100% necessary for something you are going to be handling often. If you aren't going to be using a clear you really should go with gloss. Gloss paints are harder and more resistant to touch. They are also easier to clean. Also despite being called a paint and primer there's no such thing. Paint and primer combos are in fact just thicker formulations of paint. To assure adhesion best practice is to prime your parts. In the case of painting metal parts best practice is to use what's called an etching primer. Etching primers do what they say. They etch the metal which helps the primer stick, and in turn the primer helps the paint stick. Another options would be to use something like plasti dip. It requires no prep and gives you a durable rubberized coating. It is thicker than paint so if your tolerances are tight it's probably not going to work. But what's nice is if you are unhappy with your results or you decide you want to try another color it'll peel off in a single sheet and leave a clean surface behind.
What I was also missing in the video was to properly degrease and clean all surfaces before applying paint. Grease from your fingers can ruin the result.
If you’re worried about the paint wearing off with prolonged use, you can also spray paint the inside of a transparent shell! Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance shells look particularly amazing, and comes with the benefit of the paint not being able to wear off easily as it is on the inside of the shell. It usually works best with crystal clear shells, but my absolute favorite is using the transparent green shells, or even an extremerate gradient shell if you’re willing to paint one of those. With some masking tape, you can not only get some interesting patterns as you work, but can get some pretty crazy ideas by spraying both the outside and inside of a transparent shell depth wise.
A few tips for anyone wanting to try this: even if you have matte materials, you should still do a light sanding. Definitely do a primer coat first, even if the paint claims to be paint & primer. And lastly, the clear coat should definitely not be considered optional. If it's a device you're customizing to actually use, rather than just for display, the clear coat will protect the paint and help it to last longer with the constant use.

I must say... The spray painted orange buttons look great on the flipzizzle. The handpainted one certainly is an eye turner, I can see why it made several appearances during the video 😂

Just take cardboard. Fit it around a box fan 3 or 4 feed deep pointing away from you. Fit in 2 or 3 hepa ac filters. Set the fan on and do you air brush or spray painting. You can make a small one the same way with a small box and a vacuum like a shop vac Real small ones with a big pc fan for doing super glue work.
Hmm, I have a second Retro Pocket 2+ that I could play around with painting. I bought it in Gamecube purple with white buttons, but I always thought that a handheld would be cool with a flat black case and neon green buttons, maybe adding a flair of color by doing the triggers and upper buttons in neon orange.
Great guide, one little tip for the buttons or anything that is very small, tape the bottom onto the cardboard so it doesn't move when you are spraying it. not a huge deal but found it helpful.

I've always wanted to cast my own buttons in resin. You can change not only the color, but the texture and shape as well by just changing the blank before you make the mold. Maybe a good video idea?

I've also had good luck with Krylon Fusion paint on plastic. But whatever you do, try to use paint and clear coat from the same company and the same product line if possible. They are formulated to work with each other. I would also clean the parts after sanding with rubbing alcohol and try to handle them as little as possible to not get oil from your skin on them. My favorite gamer paint project was a Flying Tigers shark mouth Xbox 360 controller. Turned out great and the paint has lasted for years.
Painting is a great way to customise,I used plastidip on my old RK2020 years back. Great thing about plastidip is you can peel it off anytime. Awesome video bud👍🏾

I would totally do a WWII aircraft paint scheme but only on a vertical handheld, green camo on top transitioning along the sides to sky blue on the bottom. air force decals, machine gun ports, etc. I have always wanted to paint up a 2 door sport car like a WWII airplane like a Mitsubishi Lanser or something.
@3:35 I got that SAME handheld back in 2017! It was called the Retro Mini RS-97 by Coolbaby but my Amazon order says Anbernic, but there's no Anbernic logo anywhere on the device, and you know how much Anbernic LOVED plastering their logo everywhere on their devices! And yeah, it was kind of crappy, but you can install custom firmware on it and even install RetroArch 1.9.7 and play many systems on it, and there are standalone emulators that work a little better. The only downside with the custom firmware is that it removes the stock music, pictures, and video apps, which I thought were kind of neat. But my first retro handheld was the PSP. The very first time I was able to jailbreak it and install SNES 9x TYL was an astounding experience. Who would've thought I could carry all my SNES cartridges with me in my pockets?! This was way back in like 2005!
I use a vinyl dye instead of spray paint, spray paint is thicker and tends to be a bit sticky. vinyl dye is also flexible so you can use it on rubberized parts and cables and it doesn't crack. the downside is it's about 3X the price of a normal spray paint.
Thanks for the new colour themes. I found the Grey Gunk theme was not recognised when added to /mnt/SDCARD/Themes/ as a zip file, but works great when unzipped into a new folder there. Not sure if it's because the zip needs a folder at its root? I will soon spraypaint my multicolour buttons on my transparent black MM+ to just black to go with the theme. Thanks again!
I think your first device you can't remember the name of is the RG300. It was a device I seriously considered but ultimately went with the OG orange and black RG350

There is something I can't find on the internet and that is "how to tape the round edged screen" properly. I want to paint my Legion Go, but seems like I'll have to use the old hobby knife.
If you do a good job, and especially if you use a clearcoat, the paint may last a while, but it will wear through eventually. I have painted consoles before, but I honestly wouldn't paint a handheld or a controller, because it will inevitably end up looking shabby when the paint starts to wear off the high spots. Even companies like Nintendo can't make a paint finish that will never wear through; just look at an old SP or DS that has seen a lot of use
I'm a fan of kill or turquoise blue and off white like the old Gameboy style. DMG. but with turquoise buttons. like Matt Turquoise buttons. I've Wanted try with the Painting my buttons Matt turquoise on the RG28XX Some of the buttons are shiny, and I wasn't sure if I could just order custom buttons or paint it like this. Now I have a little bit more confidence that I'll be able to paint it in this method. I've done this before and I don't think it should be too hard, but I've just got to get the tools to disassemble it now. Walmart, Time LOL wish I could afford, and Ifix toolkit. No big deal, though.
you should use a plastic primer and 2k paint. the second coat should be applied after 10-15min by 20°C. The same for the clear coat. 1K Paint is fine for your Monitor.
I have a New 3DS XL that the paint is peeling off of. I've been wanting to paint it with like, car paint, to give it that like "sparkly" appearance that my dad's truck has.
Anything you put on a device is going to add thickness but as long as you keep your layers to a minimal it won't be a big issue. As long as you give your paint proper curing time (it'll tell you on the box) it should not remain tacky after the fact.
Hey, this was an awesome video so thank you for making it! I am getting a GKD Pixel very soon and although its in my favourite colour (Green), I want to change it. I was very happy to see you mention it in the video and say how well the paint went on. Do you have any tips or advice since it is aluminum and not hard plastic like most handhelds?
Hey hey. My only tip for the pixel would be to sand down the buttons and dpad a bit more than I did. The paint chipped a tiny bit on some of the corners of the dpad and one of the buttons, and I think it's because those edges are so sharp. However it's not noticeable, and I would definitely do it again, so it's not a big deal.

I leave them plugged in past 100% all the time. Just use a charger with the correct charge rating (it says on the sticker on the back of the device) and you'll be good.
Hey, I don't know if anyome mentioned this but some spray paint seems to be tasty to cats. My mom spraypainted a plastic figurine for me and the cats got hold of it. It was a mess... the paint stuck everywhere, the cats where high and the figurine looks like a zombie now (green spraypaint). So, you have to watch out and search for spit resistant spray paint to protect you stuff from raspy little cat tongues. (not a joke, except in tine).
The ABXY buttons remind me of ibuprofen tablets in this color. Makes me wanna eat ‘em 🌚 Definitely want to try this with a glossy blue or something. Thanks!

This is pretty much the only way I'm ever going to get the no one makes it color schemes of my dreams. Dyeing clear transparent cases, is another option. I don't have the time, work space or money to get into doing thus and the failures. Scratched off paint, does bother me, more than the waste of failures.

Does this rg35xxsp have a creaky hinge ? Just curious if the paint would worsen that if we planned on painting the case!
Nope! I haven't painted the hinge on any of these but if I did I'd avoid putting paint where the pieces rub together.

Seriously though, is there a faster drying method? Sunlight? Blow dryer? Low oven? I don’t want to melt but I also don’t want to wait 5 days lol

This is pretty much the only way I'm ever going to get the no one makes it color schemes of my dreams. Dyeing clear transparent cases, is another option. I don't have the time, work space or money to get into doing thus and the failures. Scratched off paint, does bother me, more than the waste of failures.
