  • In this episode I try to do a test on how to define what brush knot to choose.
What to look out for and how to grade them.
I am using all synthetics from Yaqi today
I loaded the brushes each with Erasmic Soap for 30 sec and added 7.5ml water or 1 1/2 tsp
    -----------------------------------
    Summery of my test criteria:
    Criteria of testing:
    A) the back bone low / med / high
    splay
    spring back
    back bone
    B) Softness of tips / knot
1-3 very soft no spring back paints only from sides (low back bone) Horse hair brushes often fall into this range
4-7 medium softness either all the way through the loft the higher the number the "scrubbier" the tip of the knot. These tend to be all rounders (medium back bone)
8-10 high softness tuxedo style knot with hardly any give so only for side painting excellent for very hard soaps, not for everyday use for sensitive skin. (high back bone) Natural hair brushes often fall in this category Boar being often a 9 or 10 on the scale, Pure / Best Badger an 8, Dual Band / Finest Badger 7-8 and Silver Tip / Gel Tip / Manchurian / High Density can be a 2-8 depending also on loft height

Seeing is believing, thanks for your experimenting on lathering soap with different Yaqi brushes. I like Yaqi brushes and will be buying some for Christmas presents. I think I know the ones I'm going to buy know. I have a 24mm timber wolf knot and really enjoy it. Great video.

@@majasmagic I actually have two Yaqi brushes that I enjoy very much, for bowl lathering I enjoy the The black marble handle tuxedo knot 24mm synthetic followed by the black marble handle cashmere knot 24 mm synthetic for just brush face washing my whole face with CeraVe hand bar cleanser (daily driver for prep) now that is a knot that will kick up a lather with CeraVe hand bar soap(two of the best brushes I have ever used out of a dozen). It is hard to beat a Tuxedo knot for creating shaving soap lather IMO and with those cloud like soft tips. Yaqi 24 mm knots are the best in my opinion for that great feel. I have some of their 26 mm knots(Tuxedo & brown whiskers-Rainbow) that are a little stiffer for scrubbing but great for painting also with cloud like soft tips.
Have a great day and many great shaves!

@@ronr3623 Yes, the cashmere knots are fantastically soft. I cannot fault any of the Yaqi knots, they all are great. The latest soft one is the Mink and it's so close to the Cashmere.

Nicely done, Maja! I'm personally quite fond of my 26mm Yaqi Timberwolf. (I'm happy with 24mm badgers but I prefer a larger knot when it comes to synthetics.)

I understand that. For me my favourite size synthetic is no bigger than 24mm , the mocca dual band badger is just right. As I bowl lather and use scuttles, 24mm or dense 26mm are ideal
