Great Video! I've had my BMPCC 4K for 2 years and didn't know what I had. I am going to start filming weddings with it and I have one question. Why did you say you do the ceremony in Pro Res? What specific reason do you do that?
Thanks! Couple reasons. The BMPCC4K doesn’t balance well on my ronin s and most of the time the 5DIV stays on the ronin. I also honestly am better at the glidecam than the ronin s. I prefer the control over it more. Similar to driving stick shift over automatic transmissions I guess haha.

Great video. Subbed! Quick question: do you have issues with IR corruption on this camera? If so, do you use an IR cut filter? Didn't see one in the gear list.
Thanks! I haven’t run into bad IR pollution. The camera definitely suffers from it, but not as bad as the 2.5k or original pocket. I have some Hoya UV-IR cut filters but done use them much due to lens swapping with my canon cameras. The filter is one less thing I want to worry about taking off during a wedding day haha

Hey Tyler, great and informative stuff - really appreciate it! Wanted to ask a quick question: do you ever notice any lens vignetting with the Metabones .71 and the Canon 16-35? Thanks!
First off bro thank you I know I’m a little late to the party I am originally a Sony shooter but wanted to try so I bought one and then I got a super killer deal on a 6K pro so I have been trying to learn to use these cameras, and I’ve been running across a lot of opinionated geniuses not to say you’re not super smart, but the way you just explain how do use the camera while shooting with a black magic was genius super simple straight to the point just what I needed and what I was looking for great video even four years later again, thank you for sharing your technique and keeping everything super simple for a new black magic shooter like myself
How did you maintain focus on the pocket while on a glidecam? Just keep the same distance or what? Haha I’ve never shot a wedding before and my cousin asked me to film their wedding and I was planning to shoot it on my Komodo. I was told that it was a horrible idea from my buddy who mainly shoots weddings because of auto focus but if you are able to do it on a pocket I’ve got to imagine it can’t be super difficult if you know what you’re doing.
Cool video man! Im going to film wedding in the week with the blackmagic for the first time. Im so afraid of runnig out of space, or battery. Im thinking about getting some long during ceremony with my gh4 for that. Any advices?
Consider getting a v mount battery or some external power source to power the camera. Then shoot in HD ProRes LT or something soft the ceremony if space is an issue. It is still very high quality. Hope this helps!
Hey Tyler, awesome content!! I just wanted to know the configurations on ProRes you use to shoot the ceremony. It seems that ProRes takes up much more space than RAW 12:1 and I'm afraid to use ProRes PXY as I'm not sure if the quality is good enough, could you let me know which configurations you use in this case? Thanks!
Thanks! Honesty, if you’re editing in Resolve, 12:1 would be perfect. Pretty sure I use ProRes proxy as the quality is still really good and I’m not doing any heavy grading on it. I shot my last ceremony in 12:1 because of really difficult mixed lighting, but otherwise it’s just prores proxy. I’ve used LT and proxy and just don’t see a difference between the two when I’m not doing any crazy grading.
Loved this! Thank you so much for your input. We just recently switched to Black magic and use sony for the party time. Love it but yeah we need more batteries haha BTW We are in Asheville NC :)
Battery it is not really an issue. I use Moza air two with Samsung 1850 3500MHA and I can get 2 hours of battery life from it. But autofocus it would be nice to have it.
How do you handle variable frame rates in post? You you conform 60p in a 24p timeline for slow motion, or are you filming in variable frame rates for another reason?
Since it is slowed down in camera, I just drop the footage on the timeline for slo mo shots. Sometimes I’ll speed the 60p up in post to normal speed if I think it aids in the story better than skimp.
I'm quite set on using premiere so I've not used the BRAW yet as its not supported. I'm going to give it a go and do some test filming and see if I can get to grips with the colour work in Davinci. When it comes to shooting in Braw, you said you dont have to worry about the white balance, does this mean you dont touch it at all? Do you leave it around 4950k and fix in post? Do you use shutter angle or shutter speed? If Angle what do you set? When shooting in HFR I notice that its just 60p shouldnt it be double?
Cool vid. If you made it work for you and you like it, then that's great. I never wind up buying one for weddings. Seemed like a hastle overall for a lot of reasons, some of which you mentioned. Do you shoot solo?
Thanks Michael! No, most of the time my wife films with me. The wedding with the couple in the shots on the dock I shot solo except for the ceremony where I had a second shooter. 👍🏼
I am planning to begin shooting video professionally, the bmpcc is what I have my eyes on. It will work with the m43 glass I already have (the sweet sweet voigtlander noktons) and the image quality is fantastic. Very nice to see your work with it. I'm planning to mount mine on a gimbal with a follow focus attachment as it will be small and light enough to manage with one arm while pulling focus with the other. I am also planning to rig it out with a cage and possibly a shoulder rig (I may go for the chest rest style instead though as it would be a bit smaller and more convenient that way. My current cam has great ibis, but having used IBIS for a while some of the detriments are obvious. Quick and unnatural stops and starts when panning or doing other motion, loss of image quality due to heat sinking issues, distortion that occurs on wide angle lenses due to the sensor shifting along the image plane too. Trying to develop more of a taste for the rigged out and handheld look and also looking into what sliders and monopods can do for me. I think a rigged bmpcc on a monopod is practically perfect for getting many kinds of motion, and it can be just swapped out of the rig and onto a gimbal to get ultrasmooth motion as well. Thanks for your video!
Currently I’m rocking a couple of Sony a7iii but I’m really thinking of getting one of these and building a rig with it including a atomos shinobi. This is great ! Man the low light looks great ! Just out of curiousity, what is the reason you use the steadicam instead of the gimbal? Does the movement look more natural and less clinical? No need to worry about batteries? Can handle the lens setup better? Thank you for the video.
Ya, for one I am just better with the steadicam than I am with the gimbal. I like the finer control of the stradicam but that’s also just due to the fact that I’m better shooting with the steadicam. Additionally, I keep my 5DIV on Ronin S. If I could balance the BMPCC4K on the Ronin S, I might use it more so I could use a follow focus, but I haven’t found the need quite yet.

How do you pull focus when its on the glide cam? This video is amazing by the way! it's helping calm my nerves before using a pocket 4k on my first wedding shoot.
This might be a really stupid question, but how do you keep the subjects in focus while you have it on the glidecam? Looking at your footage you have a pretty narrow depth of field while using the glidecam. Is this the autofocus of the bmpcc4k? Or are you keeping your subjects at the same distance?
Tyler just subscribed, filming my first wedding with the BMPCC 4K as my A cam.. Sony a7iii is my be cam.. Any tips for filming the wedding with the BMPCC 4K? Thank man!
Have lots of batteries and battery chargers going as well. Make sure you have NDs for any outdoor shots. For the ceremony, either be near grid power or have an external battery power solution to make sure the camera doesn’t die mid ceremony. Record audio separately if you can! Other than that, stuff I mentioned throughout the video should be a good start! Good luck!

@@realmadera Thanks for the reply. I shoot with manual focus lenses so continuous AF isn't an issue for me, but the battery issues sound bad. I use the GH4, which lasts a long time and is very light.
Hello, thank you for this nice review ! I’m wondering how can you quickly and efficiently change your aperture and shutter angle while on a wedding ? I know there’s a dial at the front of the camera but It can’t do both aperture and shutter I guess. How do you manage to have fast access to both while shooting please ? Your answer would help a lot !
Thank you I really needed to watch this video before I did my next wedding. I have a question though, you mentioned using 8 batteries to get through the day, then later you mentioned having a v-mount battery. To get through a full 8 hour day, what is the best option for power? Do you only use the v Mount battery on the ceremony so that it doesn't cut off during filming?

I use the sandisk extreme pro sd cards but I would recommend going to www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59025 to see Blackmagic’s approved list of media. 👍
Is there a possibility I can communicate with you? I have a couple of questions I am trying to invest big amount of money in to that camera and I am not very sure, can I get a way to connect with you?
it IS the perfect camera for weddings. You just simply don't have the time to set manual WB before each shot and nailing the perfect exposure isn't easy either when there's so much going on around you - all these resulting in ugly skintones, aka the worst enemy of wedding films. Yes it doesn't have AF but instead you get a second chance in post production to correct messed up settings which is extremely valuable imho.
Help!... I’m getting this camera in some days and I’m also planning to buy the Metabones Speedbooster XL 0.64x. I’m also getting 3 Canon full frame lenses: - 50mm f/1.4 (compatible according to Metabones web) - 24-105 f/4 IS II USM (not listed... just the older version of this lens - IS USM) - 16-35 f/4 IS USM (not listed at all) Help me, please... I don’t want to spend money and then realize that the last two won’t work...
Shot my first wedding on a BMPCC4K two weeks ago with a Rokinon 35mm and Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 50mm on a gimbal and grabbed my master shot of the ceremony on a 5D mark III with the Rokinon 35 while the Super Takumar was on the BMPCC4K. Hey!! Great video and thanks for taking the time to do it. You answered a question I asked on another video about dynamic range compared to Sony 7iii, and I appreciate that. So how about compared to C200? Also as I said before, I am really on the fence with bmpcc4k and one big reason is because I am a Sony shooter and have been for the last five years. When I switched to Sony, I sold my Canon glass, and invested in Sony. The issue for me is that I cannot adapt Sony lenses to the bmpcc4k so I am also going to have to invest in glass also.... do you use any m4/3 native lenses? Or do you feel it’s better to use the speed booster and adapted lenses?? Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and answer my lengthy and possibly annoying question.😀😀
I’d say that the C200 pulls ahead when shooting in cinema raw light. As for lenses, I’m not very well versed in MFT lenses simply because all my glass is EF since my other two cameras are EF mount. I think there are some good MFT mount cinema lenses out there. I’m not a huge fan of a lot of MFT lenses since they are focus by wire like many Sony lenses. The best part about adapting lenses is using a speedbooster which helps in widening the FOV getting it close to S35 like my C200. Hope this helps!
So stoked to see someone actually using it for weddings and not making it seems like it only has one specific use case. Great video!

@@TylerEdwards After 2 hrs I was out of both memory and juice. I was already shooting with both Sony and Panasonic It was an add on to my line up. I may end up buying it again but not to shoot wedding I need continuous auto focus.
I don’t touch shutter angle. I have it set at 180* and just leave it there. I just change exposure with ISO, aperture and ND.
@@TylerEdwards Really appreciate the time you took to answer my question, thanks man 🙏
how long did it take for you to learn Davinci resolve?
Thank you I really needed to watch this video before I did my next wedding. I have a question though, you mentioned using 8 batteries to get through the day, then later you mentioned having a v-mount battery. To get through a full 8 hour day, what is the best option for power? Do you only use the v Mount battery on the ceremony so that it doesn't cut off during filming?
I have just shot 2 on bmccp, really good experience with it
I went down to 3:1 for last one
Nice! Think I’ve shot 5 on mine?
Cool! I’ve been sticking with 12:1 so I can use SD cards haha
@@TylerEdwards, wow, that scares me, i shoot everything full unless i really need 3:1, great to be able to shoot 12:1, i have a cflash too, imagine all that space
12:1 is the way to go for weddings in my opinion. I only go down to 3:1 for 120p but that’s it.
What speed sd card? could you link?
Nick Gardner Yeah I was wondering the same thing.
I’ve been using the SanDisk Extreme Pro 170MB/s amzn.to/2ZCcbaa with no problems
Tyler Edwards awesome thanks dude
👍🏼
@@TylerEdwards can you shoot braw 4k 60 12:1 with these cards? or does it drop frames?
can you make video how to sync audio in davince resolve
Henck Pengel , are you doing it manually or looking for an auto way?
@@lightwrx Like automatic of course, that is easier than manual. Is that possible in Davinci Resolve?
@@HenckMetCK i was thinking PluralEyes. might be available but its not yet, could be on its way
hey tayler, thanks for the tips and great review !
if I mind asking, which SD card do you recommend for Pocket 4K ?
does the SD card works fine for recording 4k 60fps on BRAW without dropframe?
would like to know from you as an expert ! :)
I use the sandisk extreme pro sd cards but I would recommend going to www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59025 to see Blackmagic’s approved list of media. 👍
alright thanks for the info ! did you find any issue with 4K 60fps on BMPCC4K with that extreme pro 170mb/s ?
Just one 256 GB even with shooting in BRAW 12:1 ? How many minutes did you get with it?
Aye South Carolina!!! We’re based out NC
Sweet! Where in NC?!
Tyler Edwards out of Raleigh, we’re actually shooting a wedding down in myrtle beach this weekend
Nice! I have family up in Durham 👍🏼👍🏼 Have fun in MB!
Hello,do you know how to reset bmpcc4k timecode?
Is there a possibility I can communicate with you? I have a couple of questions I am trying to invest big amount of money in to that camera and I am not very sure, can I get a way to connect with you?
Sure! You can find my email on the about page on my channel!
I can’t find it, can you give it to me on message?
Thank you.
it IS the perfect camera for weddings.
I’m also getting 3 Canon full frame lenses:
- 50mm f/1.4 (compatible according to Metabones web)
- 24-105 f/4 IS II USM (not listed... just the older version of this lens - IS USM)
- 16-35 f/4 IS USM (not listed at all)
Help me, please... I don’t want to spend money and then realize that the last two won’t work...
Should work just fine. Metabones is also working on a BMPCC4K specific speedbooster but I’m not sure when it’ll be out
Shot my first wedding on a BMPCC4K two weeks ago with a Rokinon 35mm and Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 50mm on a gimbal and grabbed my master shot of the ceremony on a 5D mark III with the Rokinon 35 while the Super Takumar was on the BMPCC4K. It came out amazingly! Forgot I watched this before the gig so I wanna believe subconsciously I had this video in the back of my mind lol. Dope shots! Just uploaded some highlights on my page if you care to check it out. Keep up the good content!
Awesome! I’ll definitely check it out!
can you go into detail about how you use the takumar on the pocket?
I subbed simply because you said I wouldn't!
You rebel you! Welcome to the fam :)
Good Lord man it looks Amazing but that's a Hell of a Lot of work I can imagine what you would be able to do if you didn't have to jump through so many Hoops LOL
Haha thanks! It’s a great camera with an amazing image. I’m okay dealing with the quirks since it produces such a beautiful image. The clients were very happy haha
Tyler Edwards yea it sure does and you are correct with the focus by wire. It is a pain... I should have kept some of my EF lenses... hindsight..... 😃
lang p4f stabilizer.
That's why you're here... Not to subscribe probably haha ok I'll give you a like
Unusable camera because of huge files and other factors.
12:1 raw file sizes are pretty small actually
I feel like we just watched someone use the camera to very good effect somewhere.....hmmmm.....now where was that?
I’m watching Because WHY. No autofocus, no full frame to impress out the box... I see work work work. Get a canon. Go auto and release fast.
I have a Canon (C200 and 5D Mark IV). Autofocus is nice to have for weddings but not a necessity. I prefer image quality of autofocus.
