    I've been told that you should put your LUT in a new node on the right of the node path, so it gets applied last. Once the LUT is applied, it sets a ceiling on the data in the footage.
    Put the LUT last, and add your adjustment nodes before the LUT, and your footage will retain all of the RAW data up until the LUT is applied.
    Otherwise, when the LUT is applied first, you are in danger of clipping highlights or crushing blacks, and you won't be able to recover them.

    I’m really on the fence about switching from my Sony a7iii to the BMPCC4K! Your videos have me leaning towards switching!

    • @stevenuseda6317
      @stevenuseda6317 5 лет назад +2

      Akbar Ishmael I have both. One for photo and one for video. They’re for too totally different uses, but I love the footage from the pocket 4K. I still find myself grabbing the a7iii on event gigs because of the pocket 4ks reliability issues, but for short films/music videos/ corporate videos the pocket 4K is king.

    • @varunpanda8201

      A7iii is awesome for low light content, and BMCs for all day light content. Just my opinion.

    You can just add the lut you want for all the clips by going down right to the gear icon, into the project settings to the color section and selecting an output lut.
    Also you are aware that Resolve has a full blown NLE inside and that Film Convert is available for Resolve as an OFX plugin right?

    Oh my god, thank you so much! I want to buy the BMPCC 4K soon and was really worried because it's not possible to edit BRAW in Final Cut. So watched about 8 videos on how to do that and none of them mentioned, that it is possible to export the clips individually from Davinci. And you mentioned it by the way. You saved my day, thanks a lot!

      Honestly you should make the switch to resolve completely. It’s basically the same as editing in fcpx once you get used to it. I just made the switch. I feel Apple needs to up their editing software game. They used to be the standard. Now resolve is just as good and you don’t need to transcode anything. So much faster and less headaches. It just feels super foreign at first. Almost like the switch from Final Cut Studio 3 to FCPX (so good they skipped 7 updates).

    • @joelfrei669
      @joelfrei669 4 года назад

      mrwashur1991 Yeah, I thought about it a few times and I like using resolve. But before I got into filmmaking I got a 2019 Macbook Pro 13 with a Quad core 1.4 gHz processor wich is really struggling to handle more complex projects in resolve. Im already happy with the performance in Final Cut when editing in 4k. But thank you for the advice, I‘ll pay more attention on the specs when it‘s time for a new laptop.

    • @mrwashur1991
      @mrwashur1991 4 года назад

      @@joelfrei669 The cool thing about resolve is its timeline independent (or whatever it's called). You can change the timeline settings to 1080p to edit and switch it back to 4k when you output. You can also use render cache so it's more like fcpx and it'll render the timeline for good playback. Also can generate proxies such. But to each their own. If you want a real editing rig then hackintosh is the way to go.

  • @RexSmithII

    the correct way in divinci to add a lut, is at the last node. so you make two or three nodes and at the very last one add your lut, then the first node is still log info and you can adjust your exposure correctly with out clipping highlights and so fourth. if you do it your way once you add that lut, rec 709 is bake in and if you bring down your highlights you wont get all that information back. I can show you a tutorial explaining this if you would like

    I was interested in your comment about achieving a consistent look across all of your films. I actually aim for the opposite: every film to have a 'different' look. But that's the beauty of LUTs and colour grading in general - anything is possible.

    • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  3 года назад +2

      I think having a consistent look can come naturally if you grade your own work, as it becomes your style the same way the way you shoot is yours only etc. That being said having a different look for each film can be a good exercice or another way of it actually being your style if that makes sense :). I usually have different movements and focal lengths in each film, not so much grading. Thanks for watching :).

    • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks a lot and glad you like it :) !! It worked really well with the original Pocket so I am used to it. I tend to grade a lot of stuff from scratch too, but sometimes when I am after a specific film look then I use FC. I do a lot of photo work so it influences me a lot as well and FC allows me to get a similar look across both mediums.

  • @aaronhinton92
    @aaronhinton92 6 лет назад +27

    This is such a bizarre way to grade. You know you can apply the extended video LUT in FCPX, right? That way don't have to transcode all the footage for no reason and waste a bunch of storage. Just pull in the original log clips into FCPX and then apply the LUT there. Or, use Resolve the way it's intended to be used: as your grading software.
    Also, you shouldn't ever add a curve after a LUT. Do it before the LUT, as LUTs are destructive and disable Resolve's famous 32-bit float feature.

    Why are you using the LUT in DaVinci anyway? You mentioned You always have to dial it back because the look from filmconvert is to strong... Yeah its because the settings you choose are for the material WITHOUT the LUT. Directly from the camera. Try using filmconvert without the step in Davinci and I think you will get not this strong look and more what they intended ;)
    And my experience with filmconvert is if you use it like a lut at the end of all color correction. I work through the filmconvert look if you know what I mean.

      OK mais si tu veux convertir ton Log (film) to video Rec 709 directement dans FCPX, ça suppose que tu aies le 3D lut « Black magic pocket 4k to video v4 » dans final cut ?
      As-tu remarqué une grande différence de plage dynamique entre tes fichiers Braw Q0/Q5/3 :1 et des fichiers Prores 422 ou 422HQ ?
      Quel serait selon toi le meilleur rapport entre la taille du fichier et la meilleure dynamic range ?
      J’ai vu ton superbe travail sur ta vidéo d’automne en Braw Q0, si tu as le temps pourrais-tu s’il te plait nous expliquer ton processus de travail du Braw dans Da Vinci pour le convertir ensuite en prores ?
      Si tu le souhaites je peux traduire mes questions en anglais pour que la communauté anglophone puisse aussi bénéficier de nos intéractions ?

      Thank you !! I might move to Resolve fully as well for certain projects. Doesn't really bother me no, the BMPCC 4K is my travel and footage licensing camera so the projects are not usually critical with time etc :)

    Do you ever get problems that your footage looks different in the FCPX than it was in the Resolve? My footage looks flatten and less saturated after imported to the FCPX.

    Just to be clear, you put the LUT on your footage and then ran FilmConvert on that footage (with the LUT)? When you configured the camera settings for FilmConvert, it looked like you used the "Film" picture profile instead of Extended Video, which was the LUT you had selected in Resolve. Is that intentional?

    • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  6 лет назад

      Yeah I did, I think it was when I mentioned that you can choose the camera used and settings within FilmConvert so no it wasn't intentional. I was more showcasing one of the cool feature of FC. That being said I have used the Film picture profile in the past even after applying a lut since the picture profile can sometimes come in quite strong. Like with the original Pocket for example. Hope it makes sense.

      @@OfTwoLands i understand what you are saying- but in theory could you not just import the prores footage directly into fcp x -add the film convert software and then select the 'extended video' option? instead of adding it as a lut first in resolve and exporting with the lut applied?

    He Flo, I was wondering what codec you export to when you've finished your projects in Resolve and upload them online (youtube etc.)?

    • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  4 года назад +1

      Hi,
      Just the standard youtube export. It ends up being h264 .mov around 20 mbs. Hope this helps :)

    • @SHVideografie
      @SHVideografie 4 года назад +1

      @@OfTwoLands Yeah absolutely. Thanks! And what about other platforms such as vimeo? I always get the feeling that h.264 compresses the image a lot.

    • @jamesaltonfilms
      @jamesaltonfilms 4 года назад

      You should export your video in ProRes 422 (then choose data rate/compression with HQ/LT/Proxy) if you want to keep the video as little compressed as possible (still 10-bit with lots of colour space). Then let RUclips or Vimeo choose their secondary compression. The downside/cons of this is filesize and upload time. If you have fast internet or upload overnight, as well as can work around the Vimeo upload limits, ProRes is best. h264 is for faster uploads, Vimeo upload limits or if you're just fine with the slight loss in quaility. Of Two Lands videos still clearly appear sharp and crisp so h264 may be sufficient for your needs!

    Hi, I am in confusion about the difference of projections of the footage between super35 sensor and MFT on a bigger cinema screen.
    Can one shoot a footage on a MFT sensor and project it on the cinema screen without loosing any quality? Is it possible? Or there is some other technicality in play?

      @telenoticiasmatutino8134 5 лет назад

      HI, REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE RECORDING 4K AT HIGH QUALITY MEDIA, PRORES OR BRAW, SO THE FOOTAGE WOULD BE AS GREAT QUALITY AS A SUPER 35 SENSOR CAMERA, WHAT CHANGES IS THE FIELD OF VIEW THAT YOU GET USING DIFFERENT MOUNTS. I RECOMEND TO WATCH THESE VIDEO ruclips.net/video/LxZe4MuM8_Q/видео.html.

      Hello Benjamin,
      I have mine since about 4 weeks so I guess I'm one lucky guy too.
      I guess that they may do some quality checks and remove some bugs and problems.
      My Pocket 4k has some problems like incorrect battery status (percentage jumps up and down, camera turns off at 50% etc.) and sometimes it doen't recognize my Samsung T5 (have to restart the camera a couple of times). As far as I know I'm not the only one facing these issues so maybe they try to fix them before they start shipping it to everyone.
      Best regards
      Sam
