CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The second-wave attack is let loose on the tanker driven by Max (Mel Gibson) leading to a massive, destructive crash with The Humungus (Kjell Nilsson).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director George Miller's follow-up to his own 1979 hit Mad Max is proof that not all sequels are inferior to their originals. If anything, this brutal sci-fi action film is even more intense and exciting than its predecessor, although the state of its post-apocalyptic world has only become worse. Several years after the deaths of his wife and child, Max (Mel Gibson) has become an alienated nomad, wandering an Australian outback that has fallen into tribal warfare conducted from scattered armed camps. After a road battle with psychotic villain Wez (Vernon Wells), Max meets up with the odd Gyro Captain (Bruce Spence), who takes him to the camp of a sympathetic group led by Pappagallo (Mike Preston). As Pappagallo's people are camped at a refinery, Max plans to take their oil -- more precious than gold in this world -- but eventually joins them to fight a band of marauders led by the evil Humungus (Kjell Nilsson). The stunning climax features a heart-pounding chase scene involving an oil tanker-truck and a frenzied rush for the coast, with Humungus and his forces in hot pursuit. Nilsson is a scary villain, with huge muscles and a sinister pre-Jason hockey mask, but the stunt work is the key here, and it is more flamboyantly dynamic than ever, edited at breakneck pace and staged with manic fury by Miller and stunt coordinator Max Aspin. Savage and kinetic, Mad Max 2 is a must-see for action buffs.

And all of this without CGI, just stuntmans and practical effects, George Miller is a genius !!!
+Oskar ya hax The newest Mad Max was 99% without CGI as well. All of those car stunts were real.
+john Thaerough No much of the action only used CGI to remove the harnesses.
+Darrin Patterson
True. Whats incredible is that massive explosion in the movie was done in one shot. And no one got injured from it.
Probably because there was no CGI in 1981.
+Captain Canuck Of course there was CGI in 1981. Star Wars: A New Hope and Empire were both released before 1981 and theres plenty of CGI in those.
This is actually a really depressing movie, all the good guys in this chase die a miserable death trying to be heroic. Max is the only one that survives, and he doesnt even win the fight, they just let him go after they realize there is no gas in that tanker.
Feral Kid survives though, and for all we know he could actually be doing fairly well now.
@JUST AWESOME Oooh, yeah that was rough.
@@calowenby1654 So did the Auto-Gyro Pilot, he survived despite being shot down....
@@Black-Rat Oh yeah I remember that now!
@JUST AWESOME same happened in the first movie. The first mad max movies were quite violent
And the road warrior....we never saw him again....He lives....only in my memories.
Max became a loner after losing his family, had no desire to get close to anyone again.
You could almost say, "Just walk away".
He's at a Stuckey's somewhere, old and forgotten but still wears the jacket with the wrenches (which is against Stuckey's policy but they look the other way).
He makes a cameo in Mad max Furiosa
If you pause at 2:42 you can see bits and pieces of Wez embedded in the tanker's grill. Gotta love that attention to detail.
Well it's a mix of Wez and the two poor sods on Humungus's hood.
Crikey - well spotted.
***** and when the truck crashes you can see a limb flying
***** I hadn't noticed that before, I could always see a piece of limb or a piece of meat tumbling across the ground, but never Wez's body.
***** As well as meat flying shortly after
1:17...one of the most beautiful shots in film history. The cinematography is off the charts
if the director make little longer shot it will be very good ...seeng the sun between the cars
Like the sun behind the carrier in Top Gun.
Um...
It almost looks like it was done today
@@shiplymowed6688 You can get that in Fury Road

Yep, break fourth wall with face to face
What's even more disgusting is watching those steel claws rip into Max's shoulder as he lurched forward to save the kid. He loved that kid.
@@jkdbuck7670 yeah, that made me physically sick watching that claw tear into his shoulder.
Followed by the best crash ever at 2:30
Very much agreed.
Saw this in a theater. Watching this unbelievable chase on the big screen is mind-blowing!
I saw this film in the cinema as well. Mindblowing experience. Just rocked!

The gyro captain cracks me up, love the f-you arm sign after bombing the Lord humongous and then the oh-shhhhit as he shot down.
@@Banana_Split_Cream_Buns Good movie trivia :)
That f-you arm sign looked cool
The whammy, a classic FU sign it's not used enough today. You can combo this move to produce the double whammy. Or if you are truly trying to get you point across use the coveted triple whammy.
Yeah, he’s a great character.
After Max and Feral Kid both survived the final crash, the Gyro Captain had also survived despite him being shot down but this time, he was smoking a cigar, just looking proud...
That sunset between the truck and the car at 1:17 is just marvelous.
Man that's the most badass U-turn ever! Max just jams that wheel, no remorse for the cars near him (as it should be). And that panic-inducing score!
I probably missed the comments but the score is so much a part of this chase and the movie. The fact we can have one of the best scenes in cinema without any dialogue shows how good this movie and director are.
Movies without dialogue are really great. "show don't tell".
There is dialogue, but it's all "Get that bullet!"
The suspense and heart beating makes it better, it makes you feel like Max and the kid is about to die, that suspense is ruined by the 3rd movie of course.
This movie honestly has one of my favorite scores of all time.
It is funny how the right music in a movie can just tie everything together perfectly. Watch the same movie without the score and it is a audio snooze fest.
The more I rewatch these movies, the more sense it makes for the feral kid to be Tom Hardy. The feral kid was traumatized climbing out of the hood. If Tom Hardy was the feral kid, it makes sense in his character arc that he was strapped to a vehicle as a hood ornament.
Nah they just cast an actor to young for the story they wanted to tell.
Yeah, no.
I can entertain this theory, although it may not be the strongest theory, but if you think about it Max was portrayed as more of a force of nature in the second and third film, a legend even. If they left out the flashbacks of Max’s family in Fury Road, it would definitely be a stronger theory I think. Good eye though.
It's not. Max is a legend by the time of Fury Road. The movies are stories told long after of a legendary road warrior. Even stories that didn't involve him get changed to include him. He's immortal because, minus the first film, he's not a person he's a character.
The flashback from the first movie debunks this theory.
Love the switch from screaming horror to silent abject terror when he sees humungous coming towards them. 2:26
Well, how would you feel when knowing that you were about to end up like a metal-sandwich even for a few seconds ??
1981.........let that sink in for a moment.......MASTERPIECE!
It’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever scene. I don’t see how people like it besides nostalgia.
@@ALF3Y One of the worst XD you must not see a lot of films; I kid. But, seriously you really do not see why people like it besides nostalgia?
How about the awesome action, the excellent framed and dynamic camerawork, the tight well paced editing, the blood pumping score, the sparse but to the point and memorable dialogue throughout the film, the fun and crazy characters, the unique and cool costume designs and some of the greatest stunts and practical effects put to film that just suck you in as a viewer and make the world more believable?
But, no dude you are right totally just nostalgia XD sure it is the film that launched Gibson on a fast track to international stardom, ranked frequently as one of the best action films and sequels by multiple outlets, has numerous real life inspired fan events that are attended to this day by people of multiple generations and was a franchise with a setting and story that was so harsh and violent but so fun and awesome as well that a new film was made all these years later. Yep sounds just like nostalgia to me!
And in case you are wondering I saw this film back when I first entered college several years back so I was at the height of my critical film phase at the time and I loved it then and multiple viewings years later I still love it! So in summation just because you do not like something personally does not mean that it should be hard to understand why others love it ^-^ I hope you are having a nice day so far!
@@ALF3Y are you taking spelling classes
@@ALF3Y Seeeen!!!! Not "Scene". You need to have some good spelling grammar.
Love when humongous hits the nitrous best part of the scene.
I agree with another commenter on here, Mad Max *_IS_* the Post-Apocalyptic equivalent to the American Western. Max is the lone warrior like Eastwood's Man with No Name, the villains are like the bandits, and the good people Max is helping is sort-of similar to a small Old West town. Cars are the horses, and the post-apocalyptic landscape is very much like the Old West.
It's just like the movie "Shane". It's even seen through the eyes of a hero worshipping kid.
It's more an epic movie, the equivalent of Homer's Ilyad.
When "Mohawk" appeared and the kid screamed, people went crazy in the theater.
😂😂😂😂
Wez popping up right then is such a fantastic moment imo. It’s terrifying in the exact right way for this scene and gives it such a unique vibe for me.
Its even more terrifying when you realize he still has an arrow in that wrist thing he wears & both Max & the Feral kid have to both avoid getting away from it.
@@cgh7337 Great point!
@@calowenby1654 Pause at 2:42. Wez and Humungus got decapitated on impact.
@Daniel Williamson Thanks for letting me know! I’ve got it paused right now and I think I can see some of Wez’s limbs, but I can’t see either of their heads.

Watching this as a kid was absolutely amazing! Even with the sped up frames and everything it has aged so well because it was all filmed on site with stunts, props, and real people with real machines, and no CGI. Still will continue to look amazing further time goes on too, CGI ages so badly, even 5 years back.
I can only imagine seeing these movies as a kid. I plan on showing ‘em to my kids when I have some.
This is much more fun to watch than Fury Road, which is just 2 hours of bright lights and loud sounds.
0:21-The Gyro Captain gives Humungus ‘The Arm.’ There were baseball caps with this on it back after the movie came out. Classic gesture.
great scene - I like the music when Mel turns the rig around- sounds like desperation
@dizbang3073: It was. His crew was wiped out, he was injured and his merciless and relentless pursuers were closing in on all sides. When I first saw it I thought it was strange to head BACK in the direction of the camp, but then I realized that he was forcing his pursuers to drive into the blinding setting sun and buying time for the convoy to put even more distance between it and the predators after they discovered that the tanker was a decoy.
this movie makes a u turn look epic
2:41 RIP TANKER 1981-1981 U WILL BE MISSED
At least it went down with a BANG !! Humongous was completely fooled and he died along with half of his gang for nothing, there's was no fuel in the tanker truck, just sand, I was laughing out like an average maniac when I saw this...
The real fuel got away in the opposite direction and nobody chased it....
Let off some steam, Bennett!
Uh, wrong franchise, buddy.

Still the best Mad Max movie ever!
Agreed and best movie ever made too
Whenever I drive my semi thru the deserts of Arizona or New Mexico I annoy other truckers with Mad Max references. This scene made me do it.
Revenge is best served on a cold plate and Max really show them how to do it.
I liked this even more than the first film. The incredible ending chase is perhaps my favourite piece of cinema.
I found the first movie from 1979 to be really boring
@@JoelCraikeIt’s boring but sorta immersive, with how near-apocalyptic everything is and people are just going on about their lives
Watch enough and see things like Mel throwing around a dummy dressed as the kid to simulate the being thrown around.
Someday as an old man I can see myself telling my grandchildren: "Seeing movies like this in the theater..... No CGI Real actors, real stunts, real machines, a real story---I'll never see again. They live only in my memories".
Dont worry im pretty sure you already can say this
"back in my day, when people didnt have the technology for 60 inch oled displays" - the cinema is full of noisy people who ruin the experience.
The kids will be like: “eeew why does that guy have dirt and feathers and blood on him that’s disgusting eeeew” 🤪

The stunt work in this film is amazing with no CGI.
Imagine being 12 years old and seeing this movie and Conan the barbarian… nothing has ever compared since lol
That u turn gives me chills even after all these years
Me perdonarán pero esta es la mejor de todas por mucho. Una historia excelente, la filmación espectacular y todo a un ritmo frenético. El mejor road picture de todos los tiempos
I remember seeing the final chase which was mind blowing. Keep in mind this was 1981. In Roger Ebert's review of the film he said he did not know how no one was killed during the final chase scene.
At least two of them on the tanker truck died, that biker on the tanker trucks hood was crushed, no way he could ever survive this line of punishement, and what about Humongous ?? A hell of an ending for that chase...
It sounded like Ebert had never seen the entire movie, but there was something I think I noticed about the original Mad Max, the guys who played the bikers might have been the Hells Angels of Australia...
Not sure if it was true or not as they're nowadays seen like from the organised crime in a bunch of different countries...
But still, if they needed a bunch of people to play the parts of a big gang of bikers, I felt that it made sense to hire experienced real life bikers...
At 2.26 wez knows somethings wrong when the kids attention is not on him anymore priceless
Yeah, he knew something even worse than he must be behind him. Haha.
Haha. Well said!

It is the absolute greatest IMO
When I was 12 years old I watch this and Conan the barbarian back-to-back on a VCR they were the first to rated r movies I've ever seen and I watched it with my uncle and my dad and they changed my life forever
Only Mel Gibson can be Mad Max
Yup not even Tom Hardy is Mad Max well he's not my Mad Max
1. I'm happy The Road Warrior and Fury road are rated R
2. I'm happy that Fury Road used real cars, real people, real locations, real costumes, real stunts. All the flames were real in the movie. It makes a movie so much more believable when those elements are in place.
3. Mad Max Fury Road isn't trying to win academy awards, or earn the most at the box office, or have the most CGI... in my opinion it's just trying to HAVE FUN and please the fans of this great franchise and NOT SELL OUT TO HOLLYWOOD!
+neckisstiff You 've nailed it. I totally agree with you.
***** Seriously? Wow that is just mind blowing, considering I posted this awhile back. I hope it wins some awards at least.
+neckisstiff Actually Fury Road used CGI to change up the locations. Doesn't make it any less awesome though.
+neckisstiff Funny how Fury Road wasn't trying to win any academy awards, yet ended up winning the most :D
VioletBandicoot I know.... I was surprised when I saw that. I guess Hollywood realizes that there big blockbusters, sometimes will get beat by movies like "Fury Road".
Vernon Welles popping up over the hood scared the crap outta me as a kid. Still does.
At :29 I always found the part they shot down the Gyro Captain hilarious. You see his goofy face freaking out when he loses control, and the shots of him and his gyro fall to the ground looked unintentionally funny. LMAO 😂😂😂
You know you're in an 80's film when you gun makes Galaga sounds
Wait where?
@@WindiChilliwack I think the gun in question is the quad-bowgun turret being used earlier in the video, since the sound effects definitely sound like they're right out of an 80s arcade game.
@@foreignroninl1555 Oh that? It's just the like air compressing sound to make it feel dramatic to show what it feels like. Like, a silent gone going PEW! while nowadays it's a stapler sound clicking
@@WindiChilliwack Yeah I wasn't certain why an arrow-launching turret sounded like that so I just went with the assumption of it being another 80s film that uses video game sound effects for some of its firearms.
Mel Gibson was actually fucking awesome back in the day.Mad max 1 and 2 are without doubt the best role he has ever played. However I can't even imagine him as max any more.Boy has he changed. All the actors in the Road Warrior were great, and so was the music.
He is famous as Martin Riggs, the "Lethal Weapon" as well. Mel Gibson....a man with charisma, that's for sure!
Mel could have still played an old but tough and rugged Max. Showing an aged character in a movie doesn't make a difference if the story continues sequentially.
After all, we aren't dealing with a movie character like Wolverine here. Even he was made to die in Hugh Jackman's last film 'Logan'.
To be honest, he looked more badass in Expendables 3 than how he looked in his movies that he did in his 30s.
The older he got, the better he became.
Too bad that his alcohol problem and behavioral issues made him lose a decade of his career when he was at his peak.
Because he is a anti-Semite?
He will always be Max, Riggs and William Wallace in my book
I saw this in Sunday school when I was 12 years old. During the show, we had cookies and milk. After the show, we stole our parents automobiles and crashed our way down Interstate 80/90. Much fun was had that day.
I noticed the broken body parts in the grill after the impact. So used to the VHS version I missed it after all these years. LOL
This movie was so ahead of its time. It also influenced The Terminator series by James Cameron; he has stated many times before that he based the futuristic action scenes in Terminator off The Road Warrior.

Max and this Mack R700 put Humungos go shine and chrome forever😂
I wonder what thoughts went through the minds of the remaining raiders when they saw how they'd been tricked. All that death and misery for nothing.
Humungus: I'm going to ram this massive semi truck using a plow head on with my tiny little car, that will definitely stop them
the reason he did it was that he fell behind the chase a few minutes earlier and thus not being aware that Max made a u-turn. He just activated his NO2 boost to catch up with the chase, and crashed head-on because of the speed and the hill obscuring the view giving him too little time to react. (yes, I am fun at parties, also I just rewatched the movie, and I am still impressed by how tight was the script, and how good the storytelling was that you are able to follow the action in the middle of messy car chase with stuff happening every second)
What a puny plan.

It always pissed me off that pneumatic darts were somehow able to take down the Gyro Captain. They lacked the range and energy to do so.

It's strange the Humungus drives straight into the truck and doesn't get out of the way
nlb329 He wasn't expecting the truck to turn around and was playing catch up by using the Nitrous. Nitrous means all you can do is hang on.
It's cuz he was using nitro and he didn't have time to react by the time he saw the truck
