CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Max (Mel Gibson) drives the tanker with Wez (Vernon Wells) and the gang in violent pursuit.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director George Miller's follow-up to his own 1979 hit Mad Max is proof that not all sequels are inferior to their originals. If anything, this brutal sci-fi action film is even more intense and exciting than its predecessor, although the state of its post-apocalyptic world has only become worse. Several years after the deaths of his wife and child, Max (Mel Gibson) has become an alienated nomad, wandering an Australian outback that has fallen into tribal warfare conducted from scattered armed camps. After a road battle with psychotic villain Wez (Vernon Wells), Max meets up with the odd Gyro Captain (Bruce Spence), who takes him to the camp of a sympathetic group led by Pappagallo (Mike Preston). As Pappagallo's people are camped at a refinery, Max plans to take their oil -- more precious than gold in this world -- but eventually joins them to fight a band of marauders led by the evil Humungus (Kjell Nilsson). The stunning climax features a heart-pounding chase scene involving an oil tanker-truck and a frenzied rush for the coast, with Humungus and his forces in hot pursuit. Nilsson is a scary villain, with huge muscles and a sinister pre-Jason hockey mask, but the stunt work is the key here, and it is more flamboyantly dynamic than ever, edited at breakneck pace and staged with manic fury by Miller and stunt coordinator Max Aspin. Savage and kinetic, Mad Max 2 is a must-see for action buffs.

Saw this in packed theater during first week. Two things I remember most about the audience reaction: 1. the cheers that erupted when Max came out leveling the shot gun. 2. The parking lot after movie was over and everyone was leaving, all amped up form the movie, yelling out their windows, screeching tires, driving faster than normal to leave the mall lot.
Mark, i rememeber that mate.
WE GO. WE MOVE!! 😂
Ahhh the 80's .....
First time I seen it in the 80’s my experience with the movie is him being alone in his own world psychologically speaking and then the wreckage of the intercepter, how his past gets pulled away from him little at a time
Crazy. They were pumped.
The kid's reaction to Max firing the shotgun into the windscreen is exactly the same as mine every time I watch this
It’s a truly epic moment.
Finally the 12 Gauge gets to shine
The kid reminds me of the "nature boy" from the bugs bunny cartoon with the kangaroo.
I used to own a 12 gauge double barrel stagecoach with exterior hammers (beautiful).
I wanted to modify it to the exact dimensions of a Howdah pistol which is roughly the same size as the gun Max used in the movie.
It is possible to own such a gun but you must submit a form with the DOJ and acquire a permit plus a $200 fee.
Unfortunately for me I live in California and it is not permissible to own such a gun in the "Sunshine State."
Big long raspberry and finger gesture to the CA politicians.
Did the blonde woman die as well with the man that fell?
When I was 8 in 1981, seeing that guy flip through the air is STILL THE COOLEST LOOKING STUNT I HAVE EVER SEEN.
+Aidan Crane he broke his leg i think
and thats why they used the stunt guys from the real road warrior with Mel.because the new school guys dont have the balls of the old school guys.
It still tickles me though. The poor sod flew and performed the most comical somersault id ever seen!
I have to say fair dincom to all mad dogs
@Aidan Haughton ...it was a stunt..but he was supposed to go over the car, not hit it with his legs
The bit where max comes out with the shotgun always sends shivers down my spine.
Made that shot really count and all the more satisfying.
That kinda gets lost in todays movies where you have a million bullets flying in between explosions.
Yes, I was about to type the same comment. So damn satisfying.
@@NiclasLoof He might be saying that while those movies happened in the 80's the also had movies like this, where every shot matters. In which case, the insinuation is that we rarely have that anymore. Still, I don't think movies like this were super common in the 80's either.
I love that despite how rare ammo is shown to be, Max lets the driver have it with both barrels at once. It's so good.
@worldhaslostttheplot9735: That one well placed shot not only avenged the deaths of his three companions but it also set off a catastrophic chain reaction of mayhem among his enemies. And it was all actually credible. That's story telling and action movie making at its finest.
RIP Warrior Woman. You made the absolute most of your screen-time.
Who was the actress. She was beautiful
@@TheMugenmunster Virginia Hey. She also starred as the blue chick on the Sci-Fi showFarscape.
@@chrishanson69 she was a model
I always feel it when I watch the Scene Feel it For The Guy Too.
I was already accustomed to her getting killed because I watched the movie when I was little but now that I'm older, it's upsetting that she has to get killed of all people.
Its so awesome when youve waited the whole movie for Max to shoot his shotgun and here finally he leans out of the truck, camera zooms in and he blasts that driver to shit
I love the noise of it as well. It's so loud, way louder then all the other weapons, which says that it's old and has been waiting in there for a long time
Gave that thug BOTH BARRELS!
ICONIC
The Feral Kid absolutely loved it.
It was awesome
I find it interesting how at 2:50 the crippled man and dies and you see the raider clearly enjoy it. And you can see how this affects Max: he could have saved that shell for later, but that just pissed him off. He's a man who kills when it's righteous.
+Alexandro Quinteiro I first saw this movie when I was about 9 and loved it so much, watching it a million billion times as I grew up and still do watch it now in my late 20s, I thought I had picked up on everything... But not once did I ever consider that epic shotgun blast into the windshield an act of retribution for the loss of the last tanker defenders! Good call lol
But he shot the driver?...
He shot the driver and in doing so took out the passenger as well.
Actually, after killing the driver, uncontrolled vehicle caused some "Enemies" to die, others were injured, completely losing Max's track.
So I'd say Max was pissed off, but he did it on purpose.
He even shot from both barrels. Considering how few shells he had. Yeah he was really pissed and he wanted that red Falcon out of his life
I wonder how many stunt extras were quietly buried in the Australian Outback because of this movie...
George just wanted to prove he was a doctor
The guy who did that famous flip over stunt got messed up
@igor šajinović Yes because he hit the car with his shins, breaking the legs during the process. He couldn't continue filming obviously but he recovered
@@CliffuckingBooth Well, yeah - he broke his legs into a thousand pieces. Not really what a stuntman is about... That stunt went wrong BAD.
@@deadralynx1288 Indeed, but looked very effective on the screen non the less. Just like Duffy Hambleton's motorcycle crash in THX 1138 (my favourite).
3:01 is probably one of the most badass movie scenes ever.
I don't care what anyone else says.
This is the best Mad Max movie.
One of them.
agreed
It's better then Fury Road that's for sure. i really enjoy the chase sequences in that movie but i cant give a rats about the characters nor believe in the world. It's too glossy.
AnnoyingReply Sam Worthington should've played Max Rockatonski in Fury Road.
Thierry Cashew Nah, Worthington can barely act.
Hardy is great imo. Besides the silly voice.
The pacing and editing of the bit where Max blows the drivers face off with the sawn off....perfect
When you watch this clip on RUclips it's alright. But the effect is 10 times better when watching the whole movie, seeing him constantly threaten people with the Shotgun but never using it makes the audience annoyed, and anxious to see if it fires.
Then right at the end of the movie, when the old mechanic is thrown of the truck, the music swells and then Max fires. Then everyone goes apeshit!
Best scene of the movie
Gave him both barrels!
The sawed-off has more character than most modern day celebrities...
lol yeah
It's basically a cameo from what I remember of Fury Road
The double barrel should get an Emmy for best supporter, along with the feral kid's boomerang.
You right, funny
Amen, brother.
An great movie that has stood the test of time; you can tell it is low-budget but still way better than its high-budget sequels.
it holds up for sure, but fury road definitely rivals it in quality
George Miller belongs on the short list of greatest action sequence directors of all time.
Guigley You speak the truth...even if this was the only movie he ever made..he would still deserve to be on that list..
+gdub454 If that's the case, then adding Fury Road into the mix should put him at the top.
Thaumablazer
I dont know anything about Fury Road..but what I do know is you being a smart ass is better than being a dumb one..no?
gdub454 What? I'm not talking shit about either film.
Thaumablazer
Didnt say you were talking shit about either film..It just seemed your comment had a "smart ass" tone about it...so thats why I said its better to be a smart ass than a dumb ass...thats all...no biggie
According to IMDB, that final scene here is a real accident. The stuntman was supposed to just fly over the car without hitting it. Instead, he smashed his legs against the car, and flew through the air towards the camera. He broke his leg, but survived.
I probably missed the comments but the score is so much a part of this chase and the movie. The fact we can have one of the best scenes in cinema without any dialogue shows how good this movie and director are.
Great comment 👍
Oh this movie’s is one of my favorite scores of all time.
1,000%. It's the most underrated movie score in film history, as far as I'm concerned.
This is what movies should be. Real stuntmen. No CGI. Great musical score.
that catapulted man... was pretty bad injured, but he sucessfully recovered
The best chase seen since the movie bullet. All in one take. What happens, happens. No cgi bs! It takes balls to do those stunts. George Miller is one of a kind.
From the moment that film starts to the end is sheer adrenaline. Amazingly little dialogue throughout. Seen it about 70 times and never gets old, the perfect film in every way.
The only thing the movie got wrong about its portayal of 2020 is that instead of a tanker of gas it should have been a rig loaded with toilet paper.
Or hand sanitizer...
mistrimeat soap
its guzaline
@@cruffysbackdoor6553 Angry ants mad with the smell.
..in the later years of the Toilet Paper shortage war, Australians would ram other cars off the road, and scavenge the wreckage for toilet paper. 😁😉
My all time favorite action movie! Exciting, emotional, inspiring, surprising, etc. Road Warrior has it all. It's the ultimate Post-Apocalyptic Western film.
Anybody ever noticed how the bloke puts a big dent in roof of the car at 2:52? seen the film like a 100 times but only just noticed that, still one of the best films ever made.
Wow, good catch! Shows how they wanted the cripple alive (good grief what horrors they would have had).
Ouch, dang I bet that was improvised and he was so amped up from the acting that he didn't realize how hard he hit it
Man, that one scene where the biker dude goes flying, is one of the best stunts I have ever seen. This chase is still a masterpiece.
Still the best chase scene ever on film.
3:17 Thats a real stuntman flying through the air. I believe he got really hurt during that scene.
Same stuntman did that Interceptor crash in Fury Road.
Broken wrist !
I agree he has gone a cropper
What a ripper that was
That was one badass stunt.
George Miller described the whole experience as "guerrilla filmmaking", where the crew would close roads without filming permits, not use walkie-talkies because their frequency coincided with the police radio, and after filming was done Miller and Byron Kennedy would even sweep down the roads. Still, as filming progressed the Victoria Police became interested in the production, helping the crew by closing down roads and escorting the vehicles.
It's so brutal how they get pulled down and run over by the car. That's the movie telling you that there is no place for weaklings in this dystopian world.
Ya but it also somethjng to say about the scumbags in the wasteland two seconds later.....
I said it before and I'll say it again: MAD MAX 2 is the greatest post-nuclear-holocaust film ever made!
This is from an era when car chase sequences were decent. No CGI was needed. Just raw footage :-)
Lean out the truck with the gauge, priceless.😎
The warrior woman and the cripple unceremoniously dying brutal deaths is both tragic, and the most mad max things ever to happen
max doles out some justice at 3:05.
So fking bad ass!
1. People forget what an action star Mel Gibson was.
2. Nothing beats real stunt work (fast and furious sucks)
3. Virginia Hey is amazing
4. Bad guys lose good guys win....simple
Current Hollywood writers are terrible and can’t write stories like this one today
Ignoring him being an anti-Semite.
@@Zelink108 ok, what's the connection of what you say to being an action star?? He'll say the N-word or something??
Such nice Bros. Always helping each other out. That one bloke helped his buddy climb up the tanker. That’s so sweet
3:02 i still dont get why Max used both triggers on that dude, i mean ok, he was pissed, but remember shells are a rare thing on this universe
He did take out 5 people in that pileup it caused, so not a bad idea.
he was pissed 😤
Both barrels? I thought the whole reason he had the kid grab that one bullet was because he had absolutely no shells 😕
@@baconlover7747 At that point he did not, I haven't watched the whole movie in some time now but some bad guy spills Max's tiny shell bag all over the truck, only one lands on the hood of the truck so the kid needs to get it.
@@xraystudios3693 it's on hulu if you have it
I still think the explosion of the refinery in this film is the best explosion in motion picture history - even better than Die Hard or that explosion in Spectre that claims to be the biggest movie explosion of all time. They even had to notify the airlines it was so big.
3:18 broke both his legs right there IRL
@Nunnha B I think he even returned to do some work on Fury Road too. Miller rewards royalty on his crew that's for sure.
3:18 OMAE WA MOU SHINDEIRU
When he busts out the double barrel...most ganster scene in movie history 👏 👌 🙌
3:05 I love that part! He blew his face clean off lol
hughes2397 and the little feral kid laughs that cracks me up.
@@stwp1 I think in some versions you can see Max chuckle a bit when he's laying the pain amongst the gang.
The first time I saw that movie, I was also quite happy to see that shotgun taking down the bad guys
03:02 for shotgun
the best part ever
マックスのショットガン最高!
"AH-HA! AAAH!!"
Quick Fact: Approximately 80 vehicles were used in this production.
Johnny Utah I, for one, appreciate the factoid!
jowston100 Wow, what's with the attitude?
Johnny Utah Utah, get me 2!
Cleon29Warrior Special Agent Utah, nice to see you here.
Cleon29Warrior That made me laugh so hard I almost pissed myself! :D :D
This film is a great reminder that you don't need 2 billion dollars worth of CG and pyrotechnics to create a visually impressive, memorable action sequence.
Exactly. No CGI is needed to make one of the best and most exciting chase scenes ever.
best mad max movie....
This is the Best Mad Max Movie Hands down!
My favourite bit is where Max fully leans out of the door and blasts the driver of the car with the sawn-off THROUGH THE WINDSCREEN.
3:03 love how you can see 2 types of shells shot into the glass, bird-shot/buck-shot, and some type of slug
Some of the best directing ever blows my mind this came out in 1981
Its like an old Dakar rally vid with violence. Love it.
At 3:16, stuntman Guy Norris, who played the motorcyclist flying through the air during this crash, accidentally shattered his femur during this exact cut. If you watch closely, his leg comes into contact with the buggy at a completely real high speed. Because of the unplanned rotation, he didn't land properly on the safety cushion-which was literally just a bunch of cardboard boxes...
My favorite scene of my fav film from seeing it in a USA MD theater in the early 1980s. God bless!
I was sad when the The Warrior Woman died. I always thought that she and Max would make a cute couple!
Me too!!!
That's why the driver got both barrels! Imo
Is too stressful to watch the good guys getting kill, especially the lady with the crossbow 😥.
Miller is brilliant. Oscar for stuntwork.
Never liked when that chick on the tanker dies. She was hot.
***** She does, but it's Australian actress Virginia Hey. She was also in the Australian Sci-Fi show "Farscape."
GabeReal9009 She is FUCKING DAMN HOT! in this movie. Icon of warrior bitch
Dietpepsivanilla And she's not a petite actress either. She's a tall woman.
Matt Clark Ha, take me to Judge Judy dumb ass.
yeah I didn't like it either. always made me sad. but adds a bit of authenticity to it. always respected miller for putting women in stronger roles traditionally reserved for men. shows the true barbarism of the mad max world.
This whole scene was just so kick ass and awesome. These guys were dying so awful. Just love it. That guy they pulled down from the truck and fell on to the road. I think he got it the worse. He got fucked up bad. Every death seen was great. Love this movie. A solid fuckin 10
Mad max part 2 the road warrior. Awesome movie
A Shotgun is always the great equalizer
All i can say is that shotgun blast did some serious damage.
Saw a XB Ford GT Coupe in stunning condition today. Glossy black like the interceptor. So good that they are respected now. My brother had one that he actually let go over a cliff because it cost "too much to run". Would be worth so much today!
In this 1981 classic movie, they were REAL STUNT MEN IN THIS MOVIE.!!!!
I always get sad when the warrior woman dies
Don't mess with Max and his tanker.
More like dont mess with max and his sawn off shotgun
the best and first film what i have seen in mylife in 1982..
The crippled mechanic did a faceplant on the pavement at about 60 and then directly under the wheels. He just got mangled.
simms bob lmao hahaha he got it bad. He got messed up good. Love this movie
It's a weird scene for me...its meant to be tragic but it's pretty comedic.
Ahhh... The early '80s...
Really funny and cool time
No, not just the early 80s, the 80s in general.
02:54 "Hey, you dented my roof!"
I love Road Warrior one of the best sequels made but after Fury Road it all seems tame. Still one of the best sequels
@Cobb Knobbler almost every stunt in Fury road is a real stunt, but just enhanced with special effects. The only stunt that was completely CGI was the car being sucked in the tornado.
This movie still holds up well against the rehashed garbage today
Bloddy dangerous being a stunt double in this movie.
The GREATEST movie chase scene ever. And the most exciting movie I ever saw in the theater.
The stuntwork of this movie is still unsurpassed this very day.
Ovo su bili filmovi, a ne danasnji sve kompjuter, kako dobra scena kad puca kuburom, Mel je najjaci akcioni glumac I jedan jedini mad max 👍💕👍👍👍
3:01 Yup, best scene in all three movies
I don't care how many Mad Max movies that are made... NONE will be as good as The Road Warrior!
“A crossbow is the ultimate survivalist’s weapon.”
My honest reaction: 3:03
Remember when movies were actually good? Comparing this movie to today's movies is like comparing an actual beef hamburger to synthetic meat stuff.
Oh wow, a vegetarian joke, that’s not cringey.
@@Zelink108 I couldn't think of a better analogy at the time.
@@Spartan77 It works. I agree with the sentiment
Fun Fact At 0:16 and at 0:20 you can see the truck driver in the cab on the floor Gibson could not shift the quadraplex two stick transmission he had to shift it for him telling him when to clutch .
For something that is not CGI, I am very curious on how they did all those dangerous stunts on the set. This chase is epic as hell for 1981.
Guts and blood! (no joke)
0:13 Max should've employed that sawed off into Wes' face at this moment.
I’m new to the mad max franchise and this is absolutely badass I wish I could’ve seen this earlier
saw this scene by chance on satellite TV. I was 11 (circa '81, '82) and it changed my life. plus 3:03 is the best come back moment of any movie.
Amazing music in this movie, very vivid.
I think this was the best of the original trilogy, but after seeing Fury Road this entire scene feels so slow paced
still a great movie though
@Ricardo VS whilst I personally prefer fury road, this does seem much more real compared
It's because movies were filmed differently back then. Now directors use shaky cams and CGI to film their scenes. Cameras back then filmed the action without it shaking and zipping to new scenes and shots like movies do now. You SAW the action, movies today make action scenes less drawn out and faster paced. That's why it seems so slow compared to films nowadays.
Its a miracle that no one got killed while making this movie.
The reason why this one is miles better than Fury Road is because I never knew who was safe or about to die from the moment this began to the end. That kind of suspense was completely lacking in the new one, every scene was "edge of your seat" and always teasing you with a character in danger, which made me care a lot less about it because I knew that neither of the main two were going to die. Movies should go back to this.
3:02 The answer to the age old question "what is a man?"
The Road Warrior!
I remembered watching this as a kid, looking back at it now I didn't know it was so awesome and thrilling.
Amazing how even during the apocalypse, roads still have neatly painted stripes down the median!
they go away mostly by a lot of traffic,so in this scenario they would stay for quite a while (i bet)...
This movie never gets old.
I like that upon seeing the raiders simply throw those wounded guards off the rig, Max is pissed enough to bring out the sawed-off.
Although I do find the scarcity of ammunition and explosives to be comically exaggerated, especially shotgun shells, the easiest ammunition to mass produce...
Sulfur, Mercury Fulminate, and small metal parts, like nails. Easy as pie.
No, there's simply no way to distribute them.
this is Australia not the states. ammo is much rarer in aussie land. also its actually harder to make ammo then a machine gun.
Sulphur and metal parts yes. Mercury Fulminate needs a laboratory or chemist plus somewhat exotic resources.
Blackpowder weaponry however would be more widespread though.
Why you're here: 2:59
baccaruda1970 Mel Gibson is the man.
baccaruda1970 All through Fury Road I was waiting for something analogous to show up. It never did.
the Sententious Vaunter Yeah, it never did, did it? I enjoyed the new movie because it was exactly what I paid to see - an hour and a half long tractor-trailer chase ala the end of The Road Warrior. But now that I've seen it, nothing really stayed with me. I think there are two reasons. The original was very raw and real. Real stuntmen, not over-produced CGI. Second, the chase from The Road Warrior was certainly the aria and it's easy to make the mistake of wanting more. But you have to sit through the tedium to make you appreciate the aria. The story was lacking and no amount of hyper-produced effects could create a lasting image.
baccaruda1970 You realize that the only CGI in Fury Road was for backgrounds, right? That every stunt in Fury Road was done with practical effects and stuntmen?
Absolutely! I came here after searching "Mad Max shotgun".
in these movies they killed heroes at will, with no dramatic wind up... one moment 2 of your favorite characters are fighting, the next theyre both dragged under the wheels of the same car as if they were nothing... i remember that most about this movie, how suddenly they died
Mel is truly the one and only Max.
As a kid I was thrilled about getting away with watching such violent films. Now I'm into film watching for the sake of film.
Lord Humangus & his unroadworthy scags are no match for Max..
Long Live The NightRider!!
This is the dystopian world I have in my head if anyone ask what life would be like after a nuclear exchange and the dust has settled.
Hate to have been a stuntman in this movie...
love how theres like a second silence then bang, lead right in da face
