I mean given Nintendo's collaboration with Universal to make both the Mario theme park and the Mario movie through Illumination, if a Zelda movie is to happen, I'd imagine the first studio that'd come to mind to work on it would probably be Dreamworks, which is also owned by Universal.
I think this is likely the truth for many people watching this movie who are barely Mario fans and have maybe only heard about him simply because he's as famous as Mickey Mouse. I know fine well this movie is so much fun that even non-Mario fans can leave that cinema with a huge smile on their faces. Illumination + Nintendo did Mario justice.
The movie making so freaking much is damn impressive when you consider one other thing at the time of this video: It didn't come out in Japan yet. Who knows how much it could possibly make once it does.
I would keep my expectations in check for the movie's performance in Japan. Western animated movies don't tend to do well in Japan, unless they're from Disney and Pixar, though Illumination has achieved some success there. If things go alright in Japan I think the Mario movie will do around $60 or $70 million there, and that's being optimistic
@@Geuelthefool yes, Mario is indeed popular in his home country, unlike Sonic who was created to appeal to Western markets. But just because something is popular it doesn't mean its popularity will translate to other mediums, especially looking back at other Western adaptations of Japanese IPs that didn't perform that amazing in Japan (like Godzilla, Battle Angel Alita or Speed Racer) or that outright failed (like Dragon Ball Evolution, Netflix's Cowboy Bebop and the recent Saint Seiya live-acton film). However, it seems that The Mario Movie had the 3rd highest debut for an animated foreign film in Japan and it's actually performing similarly to Jurassic World 3 and Top Gun 2, which did great in Japan. I think it helps Nintendo is directly involved in the translation of the movie and part of the marketing
I'm sure the great Lou Albano is smiling down at his influence. The licensing music wasn't much a problem for me for the late 80/90's songs which I think is a better choice than playing any modern-day music to be honest, and it does fit in some occurrence throughout the movie. Not to mention the first Mario game was released in the 80's, after all! But yes, Holding Out for a Hero (and thank you for saying its correct name and not I Need a Hero) will forever be linked to Shrek 2 because of Jennifer's out of the park performance as the Fairy Godmother. I always thought her version of the song was the original until I found out about Bonnie...THAT'S how good it is! She only took four days to record her part too! Shrek 2 belongs in the Louvre.
Eminem's been real quiet since Bowser dropped this sick track. He's not even Italian!" but then I remembered Charles Martinet isn't Italian either and once I realized it's a Brooklyn accent in the trailer, as a New Yorker, I decided to give it a chance. Chris really did do a great job. The casting for this movie might've been a shitpost when it was first revealed, but it was actually perfect. Anya was perfect and definitely inspiring, Seth Rogen's voice fits DK, and Keegan went above and beyond literally to do a high-pitch voice for Toad. This was a true love letter to the franchise. The movie has something for everyone whether it's all the references (like the GameCube jingle as a ringtone...my favorite), Peach being an absolute GIRLBOSS, to the amazing soundtrack (gotta love the Gusty Garden representation). And Charles Martinet playing the role of their dad was fitting since of course, his voice brought the character to life in the first place.
