This was the first Tool song I ever heard. I was on the ski school bus in the winter of '96 and my friend just said "you HAVE to hear this". I was 13 years old and it was the first time in my life my mind was actually blown. 27 years later and I feel the exact same way. They are absolutely timeless.

I find myself with the same antisocial thoughts. I think that many interpret this song to be a cynical critique of society in general. To me it's specifically about L.A., and the shallow priorities and values of its inhabitants. If the rest of the world is wiped away too, they are semi-innocent bystanders.

This is Maynard’s dislike of Los Angeles “California”…. He hopes (Mom) Mother Nature does the right thing, that a earthquake severe LA from the rest of the U.S. and a tidal wave sinks it….and thus we have “Arizona Bay”
    Great reaction 🔥🌀👁

My first TooL concert right after Ænima came out in ‘96, in Phoenix towards the beginning of the show between songs Maynard says “ We’re TooL, and one of us just recently moved to Arizona”
Then at the end of show for their encore he said “I mentioned that one of us just moved to Arizona. It’s because we can’t swim!” And then immediately busted out into this song!🤘🌀

It’s not just the time signatures, but the tempo that subtly changes throughout the song. That’s one of those little nuances that actually make an huge difference in the way a recorded song sounds. Now that everyone ‘quantises’ every instrument in their band, and no longer records live, that method of adding power and feeling to a piece of music has been eliminated. Combine that with auto-tuned vocals and other instruments, and all of the nuanced human expression has been filtered out of today’s music.

Tool have always reminded me a bit of what would happen if Pink Floyd and Killing Joke had offspring, because you’ve got the atmospherics of Pink Floyd, combined with the tribal rhythms and, frankly, the angst of Killing Joke. Not to mention that there are many times that Adam, Tool’s guitarist, remind me of Killing Joke’s Geordie Walker, who was also a master of using highly distorted guitar tones, to add atmosphere to songs that were otherwise dominated by strong, tribal beats from the rhythm section, and incredibly unique, thoughtful lyrics from Jaz Coleman, their singer. The similarities are particularly notable when you look at both guitarists’ use of chords one might not typically expect to find in such heavy music, and the range of techniques they employ, including arpeggiating the chords, the occasional slow strum that’s sort of halfway between an arpeggiated chord and a typical country -and-western style strum; sliding up and down the fretboard, and other techniques that don’t show up so often in heavy metal music. The ultimate similarity however, is simply the role that the guitar plays in the arrangement - which is that of an atmospheric instrument, more akin to, a keyboard, or a synthesiser than the classic sound of a rock ‘n’ roll lead guitar… Or that of a typical rock ‘n’ roll rhythm guitar, for that matter. It’s a role that hybridises the two, AND adds elements from outside any of the guitars traditional roles.
As a psychedelic rock guitarist, I have studied the hell out of all of these bands’ guitar techniques. Early Pink Floyd- say, up till about 1971 or 72- featured a lot of the atmosphere at guitar. Check out “Echoes“, live in Pompeii, pts 1 and 2.
I also strongly recommend Killing Joke, “Darkness Before Dawn“, or some tribal drumming and atmospheric guitar.

It’s cool, watching someone react to a tool song for the first time especially this one. I focus on the words and the meaning so much sometimes I forget how focused on the music I was before I truly paid attention to the lyrics and the meaning once you put it all together, that’s when the third eye connects to the ears and spirals around your brain and soul then when they all come together you’re addicted. but I’m just an insufferable fan.

I desperately want you to check out the band Intronaut, song Fast Worms. Audio only, not the video. They are friends of TOOL having toured with them and had Justin (bass) play on one of their tracks "Valley of Smoke". Intronaut hits hard but will take you on a jazzy, dreamy journey of odd time signatures and meandering guitars backed by one of the grooviest drummers in modern metal, Danny Walker, as well as Joe Lester on bass. Well, not just any bass, but a fretless 5 string earthquake of doom and beauty.
Anyway, Fast Worms by Intronaut. Do it.
