Once you understand that this song is about his mom and read along with the lyrics, if you can make it through without crying, you’re not human. It’s truly heartbreaking.
In 2020 my mother passed away after suffering a stroke and being paralyzed and mute for 18 years. We read the "shake your fist at the gates....give me my wings" at her funeral. Probably not too many 72 year olds have TOOL lyrics read at their funeral.
This is an absolute masterpiece. You’re right. He wrote it for his mom Judith Marie, he mentions her in this piece. She had a stroke and was left paralysed for 10000 days. I remember reading somewhere that Maynard said he regretted putting this on the album because people skipped over it and it was so personal to him. It was only years later people realised just what an amazing piece of work both are. Great reaction once again 🌀
I’ve never heard he was upset bc people didn’t like it. I just heard he doesn’t play it live bc it’s so personal and he’s a perfectionist. *ANY* mistake from either of the band members especially himself, upsets him. He regrets putting something so close to his heart on full display.

@@biddygow Maynard said in an interview he doesn't like playing this live because 1) its very emotional for him, and 2) if it doesn't get played perfectly, it pains him given how important it is to him. Since its a long and incredibly complex song, the possibility of someone in the band missing a note/beat/moment is higher than normal and he just doesn't want to deal with that.

How does that make sense in the context of him talking about himself (Set as _I_ am, _I_ tossed the burden, _my_ eyes, _my_ evidence)? What is Judith the evidence for? Like how is Judith the evidence of proof for NON-BELIEVERS? Judith is basically Job, suffering tremendously at the hands of god but never giving up believing in him. Their subscriber and streaming statistics are skewed compared to their popularity because their music wasn't digitally available until right before they released Fear Inoculum in 2019 due to a long standing legal dispute. This is such a beautifully emotional tribute from Maynard and it's also some of my favorite work from Justin.
My moms was hospitalized for the last 4 years of her life before she passed. And her name was Maria but everybody called her Marie. Much like Maynard’s mom she held on to her faith until she took her last breathe. I’m not proud of this but I remember running into the pastor of her church where she was the church treasurer and was heavily involved with. My moms health had deteriorated in the hospital ICU. I recognized him and I asked him why nobody from her church had bothered to go visit her. He said they planned to but things have been busy at the church. I told him things don’t look good so I have to hurry and eat my lunch so I can head back to the hospital. He then asks me for the unit she was in and he promised that he and his wife and the leaders of the church would go visit her. My mother who was a master at floral arrangements and decorating for weddings set up everything for that pastor and his wife’s wedding free of charge and it pissed me off that she spent thousands out if her own money to do this as a gift to her pastor and his wife. Anyway flash forward from that time I ran into him about 3 months had passed and my moms had passed away I ran into the same pastor at a famous burrito spot next door to his church. He sees me and comes up to me and says hey brother how is your mom doing. He was accompanied by 2 ex gang bangers because his church is used to help rehabilitate ex convicts and is called Victory Outreach here in Los Angeles. He pissed me off and told him to get the eff out of my face. He asks me what was my problem and grabbed my arm to turn me to face him and so I turned and as I pulled my arm away from him I turned over a right hand and cracked him in the mouth and he fell unconscious hitting his head on the concrete ground. His 2 fake church members rushed me so I took down the bigger of the 2 and as I got up from him the other one ran to the police station which was 1 block over. I got up and grabbed my food from the guy at a window calling me that my order was ready. But the cops had arrived. I told them my moms had passed away and her pastor never showed up to pray for her like he promised so I told him to get the Eff away from me and proceeded into grabbing me and witnessed and the guy in the service window told the cops they attacked me and I defended myself. So they told us either we all go to jail or nobody does. They were on parole so they did t want to violate it so they let me go. Anyway I know how Maynard feels about religion which is a problem. But don’t be mistaken Maynard is a spiritual man and just like me I prefer my relationship with god to be personal and leave religion out of the equation

I sent this song combo to my mom on Mother's Day. I don't even have a close relationship with my mom, but damn does this song really show how someone loves their mom...
Can't remember if it was you or another reactor that talked about listening without the lyrics, but you gotta have them for this song. It's so beautiful. (there are other songs where you might have a hard time catching the lyrics, but you might have a different appreciation for this song and others like it if you had them or read them ahead of time even so you have a general feel). Not all of Tool's songs are choppy and droppy hitting hard, but tell a story.
Being a Tool fan since ‘96 and A Perfect Circle fan since their beginning, Wings for Marie hit. Such a contrast from his songs Eleven (Tool) and Judith (Perfect Circle). Growth and reconciliation.
Someone will probably have a little more information than me, but, this song is about his mother dying after she was sick for 27 years or so.... About 10,000 days. They have several songs about his mother. And just when you thought the journey might be coming to an end; Maynard has another phenomenal band called A Perfect Circle. And probably one of their most popular songs is called Judith which is the name of his mother. Maybe if you do that one next, it would be a very cool transition from this song. Love the choppy drops!
Obviously it is not romantic love but love between parents and children; but once that preamble is done, I can say without any fear or doubt that this is the greatest love song ever written! If someone can hear it and understand its lyrics without touching their heart, they don't have one.
Oh thank you....thank you so much for this reaction!two masterpieces together!I little prefer part 2...but the difference between the two it's minimum!great job!enjoy your long ride!greetings from Italy
There is a lot of people in the world that dont want to listen to music that resembles themselves in their life as they dont want to face the evil an reality that goes on ,those people would rather listen to music that is more of a head banging type of music that has no meaning at all! I was like that at one time in my life but as I grew older an paid more attention to music ,ive learned that it is a reflection of my life an how the world is! Awesome reaction!..🙏👍
I know it's a tough subject, but this combo is one of my favorite songs period. I almost died when I was 9 (was in a hospital and rehab for 14 months) so this really hit me, and when he mentioned the fluorescent lights. that is when I realized it was a hospital. I never skip this song when I listen to this album. I also read that there was a point where refused to play this in a concert. And I did get emotional with this song. Other bands just can't reach level. Such a great and meaningful song. And the music is perfect.
It’s important contextually to understand this is a deeply profound song about Maynard’s mothers unwavering faith and her confinement to a wheelchair for the last 27 years of her life (10,000 days). While he confesses this was an important decision to record this in her honor, he states he will never do it again, nor will they play these songs live. A banger nonetheless.
Totally here for your Tool journey (as well as APC and Puscifer once you get there). These two tracks are heartbreaking, dealing with loss of a mother who has been paralyzed for "10000 days" (as well as issues of faith). There are many songs across the Tool, APC and Puscifer portfolio that deal with the death of Judith Marie Keenan. Orestes (from APC, check out the live version) is literally about the decision to pull the plug ("Snip away and sever this umbilical residue , keeping me from killing you"). Horizons (Puscifer) is about spreading her ashes ("Dust devil swept you away. Still not real. Ash, urn, and silence."). I can only say, listen to these songs more than once. Go deep and it is a rewarding journey. Also, good luck on the channel. I enjoy your honest reactions.
I got to see what I believe was TOOL's very first live performance of this song at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in 2007. The band ISIS opened for them. Truly incredible show. I've seen them live multiple times, and they're simply the best live band I've seen by far, hands down.
I enjoy the Tool react videos so much, I had to name my fantasy football team this year Team Choppy Drops. Hope that's OK?!?!! My son and I go around saying it all the time 😂
aaah yeah! this one is quite a ride! if you want something different and crazy it's time for Synchro Anarchy from Voïvod's last album! but all the albums are special! (you can go on their channel it's all there!) my favorite is Angel Rat from the 90's! different guitar and bass player (the original guys, you can see the timeline on the Voïvod's Wikipédia page!) but this band did/still does what they need to do! (and won a juno award with their 2022 album!) now if you like it or not is all up to you! It's a great rabbit hole to fall in though! awesome reactions once again!
thanks mate and sorry to @biddygow below....I was actually one of those which skipped this track usually.......actually listened to it for the first time again today.....and of course it is awesome....!!!

Cheers. One I would have recommended lyrics for but in your own time. It took me years of owning this album to be ready for the lyrics because I was not open to it yet. For a few years I did myself the injustice of only listening to the harder songs on this album. I was impatient.
It struck me when you said “outer body experience”. I saw them on this tour and they played these two songs. It was the closest I’ve ever come to having an outer body experience. These songs hit me as something special right from the first listen. But live, it was the band, the music, the crowd, and myself sweating and hoping up and down feeling it all as one like nothing else ever in my life. Absolutely unreal.

Love it! Not sure if you’ve listened to A Perfect Circle. But Maynard also wrote the song Judith about his mother too. It’s nothing like this but it’s great just the same.
The bang you hear at the end of part one represents the closing of his mothers coffin lid . Definitely read the lyrics with this one bro . There are plenty of comments and descriptions about the song online about her faith and how her congregation mocked and scorned her . ..do a deep dive mate or maybe someone in these comments will explain it in more detail . But it will all make sense in the end . Then listen to Judith from A Perfect Circle , Maynards other band it a continuation of this song . Also as someone mentioned already , Jimmy by tool .

Ive seen this live. Its hits so damn hard. Asking the dead m l mother to DEMAND wings for her faith!?!. Man.... pay her her dues. ❤❤❤❤❤
Yup. I saw this live before I fully appreciated it for what it was. I still cried, tears streaming off my face. Xxx
Just discovered you!!
New sub🙋♂️🤘
Thanks for the sub man!
As I'm listening to this, I'm out on my back porch, it's night, and a thunder storm is blowing in! 😁🤘❤️🎼
To me this harks back to 70’s rock, my era when the gods of rock walked the earth, but this is bloody good 👏👏👏👏❤️
I got to see what I believe was TOOL's very first live performance of this song at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in 2007.
My son and I go around saying it all the time 😂
haha thats awesome man!!
This is the cohesion for The Tool Army!
Been waiting for you to do these. These songs are brilliant.
aaah yeah! this one is quite a ride! if you want something different and crazy it's time for Synchro Anarchy from Voïvod's last album! but all the albums are special!
The patient is another about his mom but from her perspective
Wow. Huge lifelong Tool fan here. Never realized that about The Patient. Feels so common sense now that you’ve said it…
@@shannontreiber1070 listen to the lyrics, simple beautiful song, then Jimmy from Aenima aslo. Jimmy is what his mom use to call him so he is talking to his younger self and healing ❤️🩹 to move pass the pain. He was 11 years old when he had to say goodbye to his mom because of her illness
Cheers. One I would have recommended lyrics for but in your own time. It took me years of owning this album to be ready for the lyrics because I was not open to it yet. For a few years I did myself the injustice of only listening to the harder songs on this album. I was impatient.
I'm so excited im gonna bust🎉...yes this is the song about his mum
It struck me when you said “outer body experience”. I saw them on this tour and they played these two songs. It was the closest I’ve ever come to having an outer body experience. These songs hit me as something special right from the first listen. But live, it was the band, the music, the crowd, and myself sweating and hoping up and down feeling it all as one like nothing else ever in my life. Absolutely unreal.
Maynard wrote another song in relations to his mothers passing with another band from A perfect circle, named "Judith" that's definitely one you would like to listen to and react too
I definitely recommend the song Right In Two from Tool. Maynard’s other band Puscifer is also fantastic. A song of theirs that I would recommend is The Remedy.
Another great reaction my brother. These two songs are just beautiful glad you got to them. Next has to be the hloy Trinity bro, there are just exceptional songs. Either that or pusit, one of my all-time favorite tracks. Keep up the ama6work bro 🤘🤘
Thank you brother! Looking forward to checking them out soon!
Choppy drops of tears on this one. They achieved Pink Floyd status on this album IMO. Time to also check out the Holy Trinity on Lateralus (Disposition, Reflecton, Triad) three tracks in that order. Cheers! 🌀🤘
Luv ya work dude🤙Your Tool reactions make my day🙏
my favorite tool song. wonderful artwork
This album is like Guardians if the Galaxy Vol. I and Maynard is Peter Quill 🤯🤯😂🤘🏼🍿👽🛸!!!!
double candle at the end😆
"High is the way but all eyes are upon the ground.." 👃
No Quarter from Led Zeppelin, then from TOOL. 🤞✌️
Which version do like better?
Brilliant songs 🌀🌀🌀🙏🙏🙏 but I must force myself to listen to them ‘cause the subject matter is so heavy. Tears all the time.
This two songs are a true Masterpiece. Nothing else to add, other than a suggestion, do Rosetta Stoned!.
Great Song ❤❤❤ Tool always Hits Hard 😎✌️Great Reaktion my Friend 😊
Been a Tool fan since Sober came out. I am not Sub’d to their YT channel. I’ll get on that. Thanks, Sevsimo!! Good to see how quickly you’re getting subs. You deserve it!
Love it! Not sure if you’ve listened to A Perfect Circle. But Maynard also wrote the song Judith about his mother too. It’s nothing like this but it’s great just the same.
only these 2 songs could get them to Hall of fame ....
You should read his book ‘a perfect union of contrary things’
This album is in my top 5 albums ever made. Probably top 3. And this pair of tunes is a masterpiece.
😢😢😢 what a trip!
RUclips has only seen one Album released by TOOL, that’s probably why they only have 1million subs.
Yes it's about Judith Marie his mother.
Give me my Wiiiiiiings
Crème de la crème of Tool.
You should add Puscifer to your mix, another great Maynard project. Everything but their last LP is great.
Go see Tool in concert
