I’m a psychotherapist. When I first got into Tool, I was in undergrad studying psychology and philosophy. From there, the more I listened the more I got into Carl Jung, then collective unconscious, Plato, and other forms of archetypal thinking. So I went to get my Masters in psych with the intention of a PhD in philosophy, all meanwhile listening to more and more tool and exploring my own consciousness. Now, I’m 12 years into my professional of helping people find ways to discover themselves. Thanks to tool

I'm a clinical social worker, wassup 😊 I wasn't ready for the aggression when I first heard Tool in high school (I'm a sensative soul), but as my emotional complexity has matured I've fallen further and further in love with them. I'm a neurology nerd, and I just love the human capacity for shared psychological profundity through music, and few bands channel that gift better than these guys. I love hearing Adam's synesthesia paint for us through his guitar, and the madness that is Danny's wild polyrhythmic ambidextrousness, not to mention Maynard's heartwrenching lyrics and delivery, and Justin's precussive baselines that pulses that driving beat. They put you in a flow state and pull you through a journey of timelessness. They've helped me through a lot of difficult feelings and experiences with what they do.

I might be totally wrong, but I think Tool fans are very empathetic people. I say that because if you discover Tool, you have to want to discover something or learn something or love something before you end up liking the music. Most mainstream music is short, in and out with basic lyrics and radio friendly. Tool is the opposite of that. And speaking from experience, if you want to love tools music you have to be in for the long ride. I think that's why tool fans are so passionate, they invested the time in letting the music mold their emotions as the artist intended.

@@markgeisler7709 agreed 100%. If you only listened to Opiate and Undertow, it’d be very easy to assume that Tool, or at least MJK, is very anti-religion and atheistic. However, it’s been interesting to see the evolution of the band and the lyrics from Opiate to a song like Pneuma for instance. Tool’s music to me is very much steeped in philosophy and IMO is almost gnostic in nature, not nihilistic or atheistic.

57 year old Navy vet, married with no kids. I've been listening to Tool since Undertow and "Sober" came out. Tool's introspection through music is unparalleled. Penetrating and mind-bending lyrics, unique time signatures, as well as their signature way of stacking or layering their music, and then unstacking it piece-by-piece to let you down easy at the end. Melodic, powerful, and unlike anything else you may ever listen to. Tool defies categorization or stereotype. Their musicianship is not only top notch with each instrument (to include Maynard's voice), but it is the way they seamlessly integrate all of the components in each song. Maynard sings not only from his heart but from his very soul. Adam plays guitar, but also makes it sing and complements Danny nicely with his percussive guitar. Justin is like the lubrication that keeps everything anchored, on course, and flowing smoothly downstream. Danny is in his own category as a drum wizard--I would love to see an MRI of his brain while he's laying it down! Although quite different, the only band I've seen that puts as much love and artistry into its composures is Opeth. Check out "Ghost of Perdition"--Live at Red Rocks, for another mind-stretching experience.

Likes to go on a journey to another place and time. Uses music as a way to go to another realm of understanding. Really its hard to explain how Tool can affect people. The crescendo of this song was the first moment where all that emotion with her loss came through me and I cried hard. It was so cathartic for me I listened to it every day until the tears lessened. This hits home both of my parents have passed on. my ma had MS.. I as a child to a young adult watched her life cheated.. As we watched her mind and spirit slip away, knowing she too not only had to be her in her body, she to watched her body become her trap that shut her in and away from the spirit that once was .. She did.. But never let us in on how broken .. I know she felt, she was a beautiful artistic kind selfless soul .. At that time handicap individuals were just starting to be seen too, not just to be .. I was fortunate to be with them as they left this journey to the next .. Also was a hospice set nurse for 30 yrs .. Many people I've seen them through those final days.. I knew of how important it truly is to see your loved, cared ones ,, all ones. On.. To honor as they just were .. No more anyone. But them .. Its their time.. Last time to give them their time only. but them. and I hope someone will at least just see me on to my roads set out for me.. So at that moment I know someone seen me leave .. And so they can close the door behind me.. I hope my journey is full of the many weird twists I've had here.. Just not as the too many painful twists...
I can't listen to sober as I had addiction running around in my body .. But my beautiful daughter is im afraid going to lose her fight .. I don't know if I should pray or loose my mind from each time to the other

I'm a 42 year old woman. Master's degree in sociology, bachelor's degree in philosophy, living in semi-rural Kentucky -- maybe not the best representative of the common Tool demographic. I first heard Tool back in high school when the album Undertow came out. There was a metric shit ton of good music to come out in the 90s, but nothing sounded like Tool. I wasn't smoking weed back then, but when I got into college I started -- it had nothing to do with my love for Tool. Other than the mastery of the musical artistry the band exhibits, the lyrics of some Tool songs (and the song's composition itself) are philosophical treatises to the discerning listener. I am insanely happy you love Tool. Also, my mother still lives but I feel Maynard's pain in this song because my grandfather was the epitome of what a Christian is supposed to be. I'm not a hard believer myself, like Maynard, but I hope there is a heaven for people like my grandfather, even if I don't see it, because he lived his life with love, dignity, and faith, and he deserves the heaven his religion promised him.

4:35 "It's just amazing how that pans around like that."
Adam played his guitar through a Leslie speaker. Basically, the speaker is mounted in the cabinet facing down into a spinning baffle that projects the sound horizontally, creating the panning effect as it spins.
    17:30 "Is that a violin?"
No, that's a guitar. He's either using a volume knob on the guitar; or a volume pedal; or possibly an eBow, which is a little device that uses magnetic fields to cause a guitar string to vibrate.
I *suspect* that Adam is just using the volume knob on the guitar itself, but I don't really know.

I got to witness this song live and it was the most mind blowing and spiritual performance I've ever seen. Imagine about 20k people helping Maynard light his mothers path to heaven with bright lights and sonic sound. Knocking down the doors of heaven to help demand her wings and grant this man some peace from his grief. I feel lucky to have been a participant in her sendoff. I can't listen to this song if I'm not ready to ugly cry because that happens every time. It was very helpful to me when I lost my own mother. What a beautiful tribute and recognition of his mothers faith and how it spoke to him, eventually. From other writings it seems that this story had many parts and twists and turns from being angry at God to finally understanding how God works through another to touch a soul. "You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence" Just wow.

I'm a digital and web strategist (Multimedia Jedi). I wear band/movie t-shirts most days. If I'm going to be out for a bit cargo shorts and flip flops. Basketball shorts for the quick trips! I live in FL. Was def among the stoners when I got into tool as a kid. They have a lot of references to psychedelics in their everything. I've evolved in the 30 years I've been listening and so have they. Every concert sells out stadium tours. There are so many types of people there you will feel at home, trust me. If you're making the effort to get the ticket you're there for the experience not the radio tracks. Maynard has at times suggested the audience make love to each other collectively. It's kinda what's going on when he's signing.
