    Interesting test. I wish you had done the immersion test last, seeing as the olights don't claim that they would pass them, and failure was likely at that point. Also, dropping them while attached to a blue gun or such might have been a good idea to make that final drop test a bit more scientific. Beyond that, I'm disappointed in the performance of the modlite and surefire, given the high cost of those offerings, and quite happy about my streamlight.

    I love what y’all do here! I do have a few test design suggestions though. Just a few thoughts from your friendly neighborhood engineer.
    For the vibration table test, having the lights front to back like that might be introducing heat to the fronts and backs of the lights that wouldn’t normally be present, and may effect performance. If the placement on the table has an effect just from the heat generation, then the test may not be 100% fair to all contenders.
    For the salt water test, I think the exposed battery charger on the olight fried because salt water is extremely conductive. The water shorted that circuit essentially. Or, perhaps olight built in protections for that failure, and it was another factor.
    The g force and impact tests were interesting, but I think they were too severe to be useful for comparing lights for everyday use. A more interesting test would be how many drops from shoulder height cause failure. Or how many recoil cycles cause failure.
    Looking forward to more objective tests!

    • @WerkzHolsters
      @WerkzHolsters  2 года назад +6

      Christopher, thanks for taking your valuable time to provide constructive feedback. I agree on the test table item. I could add more rails and point lights away from each other. Regarding the salt water, agree it must have something to do with the charge (and switch) port, but if it's actually a switch port, I'm not sure how that would cause the light to fail and not come back to life with after charging. I think the g force test (I still need to measure the force) is harsh, but I'm not sure how unrealistic it is. Someone else has commented that their Modlite rail key broke under recoil of their Glock, and the Glock polymer should have more cushioning effect than the aluminum rail I used. I agree that the drop test should have been done with a pistol (even if it's just a weighted blue gun) attached. Thanks again for your useful thoughts!

    wow, great video and torture test, well done! Honestly the winner is the Thrunite TW10, the price point, durability, function. Prior to the 9th drop, it was the last fully functioning light. While the modlite worked as a flashlight it had lost its mounting, that notch sheering off is a catastrophic failure of design. The TW10's rechargeable function is interesting too, because of its cheap price instead of replacing batteries when it loses charge you could literally just buy 3 or 4 of these and physically swap the light out in the field. I just bought one recently, having never heard of it prior and started searching youtube for reviews. I feel pretty good about that purchase now and may grab a few more just b/c its only 40 bucks and clearly has awesome durability!

      I’ve had to warranty two X300Us due to the plastic latch that holds the battery door closed breaking, both with pins installed. The pin is only to prevent the latch from being inadvertently depressed causing the door to open. That clip has a long history of failure on the X300U and an engineering disaster on a hard use component. That being said, SF customer service seems to be on point with a stock of latches they’ll send with the quickness.

    • @WerkzHolsters

      That makes some sense. Would that be the same mechanism that allows you to use the remote switch to turn it on?

    • @DYang01
      @DYang01 2 года назад

      @@WerkzHolsters yup. Basic electrical circuit for charging, inner ring has to be positive terminal and outer ring has to be the opposite, or vise versa. You can probe those two rings with a multimeter and it should read battery voltage. I think it only shorted out because salt water is much more conductive than regular faucet water.

    I've owned the X300, didn't think it beat out the TLR1-HL. Sold it, and now run just the TLR1-HL's. I am wanting an upgrade to it, but wasn't pumped that modlight doesn't have momentary, and honestly, it didn't do that well in this test. Also heard in another review that it doesn't fit into some x300 capable holsters, which I believe they claimed it would and that's a big negative for a lot of folks. The mount breaking here is a big embarrassment for that light I feel. I own two cloud defensive lights, and am waiting for their pistol light to see what it has. Hopefully it will be the new champ.

    As far as the saltwater killing the baldr pro, saltwater is more conductive than regular water. Its safe to assume that the exposed gold contact 17:15 (I'm assuming for the charger) had a deadshort because of the saltwater.

    I'm not shocked that Olight were some of the first losers. And while people will be quick To claim that Olight stayed the coolest, it's only because they get so darn hot so quickly that they prematurely dim, cooling them. To be fair, Modlite really should have been counted out when it couldn't be mounted to a firearm anymore. Really, the Streamlight TLR-1 HL was the All-Star.. And not surprisingly so. Objectively, the quality and performance of the light for the price of Streamlight, they really are the best out there. Modlite was plagued with problems (no surprise), the X300 didn't perform as indestructible as the fanbois claim. And the Olight's died because they just don't make good lights. Thrunite makes excellent lights, so I'm not surprised it lasted. Great video!

      @@jcadvanced I think the fact that they aren't submersible, when all others are, just shows one of many ways that they cut corners and cheap out. Werkz has other light videos showing Olight's downfalls. From lacking candela, not putting out the lumens advertised, flickering issues..etc...

    Unsurprised to have seen O-Light's lackluster performance, tbh. We've done similar recoil testing with lights at the training center I frequent, and we found the O-Lights consistently failed under continuous use and recoil. Those repeatable failures we found are why none of their products are on the approved WML list for our county's Sheriff's office or city's PD.

After your testing I think I made the right choice. I have had two failures with the TLR-1 series over 15 years of using their lights. I have a TLR-1s that the strobe function stopped working after about a year. However momentary and steady on still work, and the light has been in service for several years since. I also have a TLR-1HL that appears to have a short. The light will not turn on until I remove the batteries and reinsert them. Then the light works. I am sending it in to Streamlight for service.
