    In 1968 I took delivery of a brand new Z/28. I read an article about it in Hot Rod magazine and went to a Chevy dealer with my Dad and the magazine. The salesman started to show me what he had in stock, but no Z/28s. I told him what I wanted and he knew nothing about it. So, we sat down with the Hot Rod magazine that had options and part numbers and we ordered my 68 Z from Hot Rod magazine! It was Tuxedo black with white stripes, black interior, Rally Sport option, 4:56 gears, Munci 4 speed, and duel quad in the trunk. Duel quad in the trunk? Yep, it was a dealer installed option. I drove it like I stole it until I got drafted in May 69. It went its way and I went mine, southeast Asia.

      My Dad's younger brother dropped out of college, moved to California, got married, and bought himself a brand new '68 Camaro SS396. It was white with black side stripes, a 4 speed, and loaded with options like a tape deck and alarm.
      Then his draft notice came. He lost his wife and the car, but was lucky to not get sent to Viet Nam. He brought the Camaro back home to West Virginia where his parents finally sold it after he'd left for service. My Dad took me for a ride in it when we were visiting, but I was too young to remember.

    Early Z28's were not required to have either spoilers or the tach. The spoiler package and the tach were included late in the year and the base price of the package was increases correspondingly.
    X3 exterior style trim Z28 - you noted the gill trim, however it also included-, tail lamp lenses with vertical stainless trim, roof drip molding, wheel opening moldings and the headlamp bezels have chrome rings around them, additionally the rockers were blacked out.
    Pedal trim is part of the interior trim package Z21- which also included the grab bar on the dash.
    The X in the X3 on the rear bulkhead indicates interior paint color.
    X=Black B=Blue R=Red G=Green
    You can send the Vin off to the NCRS and they will tell you which dealership originally recieved the car. You could luck out and the dealership has the paperwork.

    It had been rolled in a drag race. the original motor was in the trunk. Back then you could buy panels from car magazines , we did just that.
    When we were done, you couldn't tell the car had been wrecked.

    All Z28's were required to have "Power" Disc brakes. No mention of that here. The Master cylinder is mounted to the firewall. No power brake booster. A lot of these were drag raced as this one looks like it was riden hard. Any upgrade to the cam required the removal of the booster because the engine would not create enough vacuum.
    Funny how his car would be looked down on, but I see just the opposite. This car has had more fun than all those '69 Z's stuck in the garage or on a trailer. Nice find.

      @@dustinneace7300 Yes if I remember correctly the speedometer cable on a Saginaw goes in on the passenger side (right) & a Muncie goes in on the drivers side (left). Found this out years ago, I had a ‘68 RS/SS Camaro with a Muncie behind a 396. Ended up with a broken synchronizer so I came across a Saginaw with a Hurst V-Gate shifter, complete. Everything went together well except when it was time to hook up the speedometer cable. Just left it unhooked rather than ruining the cable do to the twist that would’ve been required to hook it up to the Saginaw.

      3/4 of an inch is .75. A 1/16 is .0625. .80 would be between 3/4 and 13/16 (.8125) of an inch.

      I would assume you had the 390 and not the 289? The Z/28 was basically from the trans am series which is a road course not a straight line.. doesn't surprise me..

    • @gw3598
      @gw3598 Год назад

      Don't believe that. My 69 Z had very few problems with most Mustangs. I used to race (373 gear) starting at 4000 RPM. I was in first gear and other car were in second gear. Right at the start of my power curve. A Z with 456 or 488 was formidable in the quarter mile.

      @@gw3598 Most of these kind of comments about beating other cars are useless. Unless they tell the whole story. Were there any mods on each? Headers and other mods were common back then, I lived those years. Even a 390 stock gta is not very fast. But then the z's were not really either. Probably pretty closely matched if both stock, although I would bet on the z, and I was mostly a ford guy back then.

I'm in Flint, Michigan where I grew up and I know nothing about any body work or discoveries, if you want to know about sb chevies and the construction of any of them maybe I can be of some type of help to you. Thanks for sharing with me and many others. You have a Great Day.

    If it's a real Z/28, where is the power brake booster? All 69 Z/28's had power discs at least up front, with some having the rare 4 wheel discs. Also, is the cowl tag in place? If it is, it will state it as either an x33 or x77 car.

  • @roberthorner
    @roberthorner Год назад +2

    Two things..early z28 didn't have the brake pressure regulator.. before January 69.and if the car had consol gauges it didn't have the hole under the wiring harness plug..that hole was for non consol cars..
