  • The DJI Osmo Action has always been one of my favorite action cameras to carry around with me since it was released. Is it still worth buying the original now that DJI has released the new one?
    Watch to find out why I still love this little action camera and see some footage of a special trip to Disney.. all recorded with the DJI Osmo Action.

    I've had mine since it's debut a couple of years ago and love it! Like you said, it's small enough to throw in a pocket to have full 4k video as well as high quality still photos at any time. I highly recommend the DJI OSMO Action!

    I bought it in 2019, and now it is still my favorite camera. Its video quality is not as good as the new GoPro 10, but DJI Osmo Action reliability is the best.
    My job requires me to put it on my chest and record continuously for one or two hours. GoPro 10 usually only works for 30 minutes and then overheats and shuts down automatically. DJI Osmo action doesn't have this problem. Until the battery runs out, I can replace the battery in 30 seconds and record again. Man, i love this thing. Installed in my TILTA cage, it looks like a tactical camera. 💪

    • @Kastor_X
      @Kastor_X  2 года назад +1

      Wow that’s awesome! And same.. I left it recording a few times in really warm weather and never had an overheat issue either. Super reliable for sure. Glad you’re still enjoying yours as much as I’m enjoying mine. I am not sure what my next action camera will be. I would like to try one of Insta360’s cameras.

    Nice review. We purchased one of these for our running channel, in Aug.'19, a couple days before our 5th Rim2Rim at the Grand Canyon. It's still going strong (Nov.'22) and has been on a lot of long trail runs. We put a pair of the little stick-on "fuzzy dead cat" mic covers on it, and that transformed it into a great outdoor/running camera. We just use it naked, clamped in a really cheap (because it's so light) 39" selfie stick. The Osmo Action 3 just came out recently, and I wanted to buy a 2nd camera. I didn't see anything in the reviews or specs that made the expense of the 3 worth it to me. I'm not an expert or anything, so maybe I made a mistake, but I just purchased an extremely nice used "1" with a full kit of great stuff that the owner had with it.

    • @Kastor_X
      @Kastor_X  Год назад +1

      There are obviously some upgrades on the Action 3 but my original is still going strong as well and I am still happy with the image quality as long as their is sufficient light. I love the idea of a sticky dead cat for wind resistance. The mics were never one if it’s strong points. And yea, You can definitely find some deals on the used market for sure now that they released the third iteration. Thanks for watching!

You could use this if you are willing to wear an action camera type chest mount.. but the DJI Action 2 is smaller and can simply be attached to your shirt with its magnetic lanyard system. Or the Insta360 Go 2 if you want a small 360 camera you can easily attach to your shirt with a magnet as well. They all work it just depends on your needs. 🤙🏻

I wish I had accessories to take along such as the mic adapter and ND filters, but I think the video still came out decent with most of the footage. I still make great use of the camera and have decided to hold off on purchasing the Action 2 for now. I'm good with 4k 60fps.

      Awesome! Thank YOU for watching! I am good with 4K 60fps as well. The image quality this thing produces is great as long as you have good light. Nice review. I’m planning to buy one. Can you tell what’s the Max recording time we get under 1080p 60fps with stabilisation and resolutions above it

    • @Kastor_X
      @Kastor_X  2 года назад +2

      I don’t record long clips with my action camera so battery life is tricky because it depends on how much the camera is on when not recording as well but DJI says up to 63 minutes at 4K 60fps with rocksteady on and screen sleep after one minute. That seems about right. I get about an hour at 4K and a little longer at 1080p. I always carry a small usb power bank with me and often have it plugged into that for charging in between shots so I can basically film for a few hours that way.

  • @kylequinn1963

    Haven't seen the video yet, but the answer is Yes. I just bought one the other day and it's way better than the hero 7 black where it counts. Where does it count you may ask? It doesn't overheat every 5 minutes and it actually works in the cold. Only cons over the Hero 7 is more narrow field of view. That's it. Everything else it's equal or better. I used my Hero 7 as well as my Osmo Action to cover the protests in Ottawa and Toronto for the Trucker convoy, the Osmo action? 0 issues. GoPro? Shut off repeatedly and had half a dozen corrupted files.

    • @Kastor_X
      @Kastor_X  Год назад

      Hey! I used mostly auto settings for these clips. I do use manual settings in a controlled environment or with ND filters to keep my shutter speed low for more of a cinematic look but on the run I have found the auto setting just fine. I film in D-Cinelike because I do a little bit of color grading on the footage in Adobe Premiere. Because the low light performance isn’t great I will use Neat Video software to clean up a little bit of the noise sometimes. It’s great for that! I believe most of this footage was 24 FPS if I remember correctly but I do use 30 FPS sometimes and occasionally 60fps if I plan to slow it down in post. Thanks for watching!

      Honestly, i'd go for the cheaper osmo action on a motorbike.
      Didn't try it myself, because i "traded" my bike for dogs - but i heard stories of ruining autofocus on a motorbike in no time. And i've no reason to doubt that, because normally you live with hefty vibration on a bike.

    • @Kastor_X
      @Kastor_X  2 года назад +1

      Thank YOU for watching! I would check out some of the Rode lavalier mics to clip onto a tie. But you’ll need a 3.5mm adapter for both the phone and the Osmo action. You’ll need a lightning to 3.5mm adapter for your iPhone and a Cynova 3.5mm adapter to add a jack to your Osmo Action. I think the adapters are worth it because that setup should definitely improve your audio! 👍🏼

      @@Kastor_X Thanks for your reply! I'll go with the RODE lavalier GO then. Do I also need RODE SC4 cable (TRS to TRRS) to connect the microphone to my iPhone? It seems like it is necessary, but information on the Internet is unclear.

So at least you know if the TRS connection isn’t working it probably just requires the TRRS adapter.

    AT first glance, DJI OSMO seems like a great deal. But in reality this is simply not the case. Mediocore sound quality on OSMO, buy a mic. Want to attach to a tripod, by a cage. Want better vibrancy like the go pro, buy filters....and while initially the price to entry is small. To make it comparable to the GO PRO 10 your looking at similar prices in the end of the day. It all adds up rather quickly. And GO PRO 10 still has features like leveled horizon and better low light exposure that you just cant get on the OSMO.
    Not too mention OSMO will probably be used nowadays if purchased now.

    • @Kastor_X
      @Kastor_X  2 года назад +1

      You’re not wrong. I do love my Osmo Action with the mentioned accessories and I was really looking forward to the OA2 but the new form factor and the overheating issues seem prevalent. I almost wish they would have kept a similar design (like GoPro does) and just improved the internals. Then I would have been all in. I will say though.. I would find myself going down the rabbit hole with GoPro accessories as well if I got one. I would immediately want that media mod and a few of the add-on accessories they sell. I find it impossible to buy any of these cameras and not immediately look at the add-ons / accessories. That’s how they get us! I am not sure which action camera I will upgrade to yet but at this point with yearly releases I’m almost tempted to wait for the GoPro 11 or grab a GP10 if the price comes down with the release of the new one. I never mind using last years model if it gets the job done. Thanks for commenting! I love this stuff!

      I have never had an issue with overheating at 4K 24/30. I am not sure I would expect super long recordings at 4K/60 for that purpose. Usually I am filming shorter clips with my action cameras because I know the limits of their heat dissipation in such a small form factor. What I can say though is that the new Osmo Action 2 seems to overheat faster than the original. For vlogging I might consider the Pocket 2 instead. You can film in 1080p resolution for smaller file sizes if you don’t need the higher 4K resolution. The color right out of the camera is pretty good if you don’t want to color grade in post production software. If you like to color grade you might enjoy recording in the D-Cinelike color profile for a flatter image that is preferable for grading. Good luck with your new camera. I love that thing. The best results I could find were using the Osmo Action helmet mounted to the chin of the helmet with a Cynova audio adapter to lavaliere mic that was kind of tucked behind the cheek pad of a helmet. (Credit to: sixthisoverdrive) Spoken audio while riding sounded pretty good that way! If you have your camera handlebar mounted you could try the same type of setup but wireless with a Rode wireless GO mounted to the helmet with a lav running inside. Otherwise you could buy stick on wind muffs and put those over the microphones but that only seemed to produce acceptable results at slower speeds. Wind noise is always an issue so I still believe having a system where the mic is inside the helmet of the rider works. I have heard slight better riding results from the newer Osmo Action 2 but wind noise is still an issue with the new one at higher speeds.

I find myself reaching for the Pocket 2 for lower light situations. With the Osmo Action you get better low light performance at 24fps than 60fps for sure. Worse case you should check out Neat Video noise reduction software to save a noisy shot. It works! For super bright days Polar Pro makes a great set of magnetic ND filters for the Osmo Action that I highly recommend to keep your shutter speeds lower and motion looking more natural. 📸☀️ Lastly don’t be afraid to slightly bump up the contrast and saturation a tiny bit in post! Any way to get waterproof audio improvements?

    • @Kastor_X
      @Kastor_X  2 года назад

      Unfortunately a lot of the audio improvements I use sound great but take away the water proof aspect of the camera. I mostly use the built in mics in a water situation with varying degrees of success. They sound okay when the camera is getting wet (like rain, etc) but if you are fully submerging the camera the audio can definitely sound garbled when you first come out of the water. I think that’s why I tend to plan water shots in a video to have some music, narration, or dialogue from another scene over it so it typically ends up more like b-roll and the audio doesn’t matter so much. It’s about planning the video for me since most mics sound terrible after being in and out of the water. The audio just isn’t reliable enough so I substitute it with the audio from another track where I have to. I’ll have a surfer talking about surf boarding in a dry shot on the beach while I show the action camera attached to the surfboard type shots.

    Which filter do you use for the osmo action?

      Polar Pro Cinema Series magnetic ND filters. So fast to switch filter strengths with the magnetic system and PP makes great quality filters!

    How do you connect the mic with the camera?

      You need to buy a small audio adapter from Cynova for the Osmo Action. It adds the mic jack.

    Bought one last week, it was the last one at a local Bestbuy BUT it’s a dud…I have a problem with it booting, I always have to remove and reinstall the battery and then it shuts down. Waiting to see what DJI will say or do, no reply from them yet. Very disappointed. I wanted this one because the new one has overheating issues.

      If that one doesn’t work out return it and check EBay! Good luck. It’s a great little action camera.

      Great! I have had it for a few years and the original battery still lasts a long time when I record.

    I think the durability for 3 years is amazing

      Sustainability too! If the battery goes bad or you damage the lens they are both replaceable.
