if you call over exposing with noise better than sure, its better in lowlight...to be fair both kinda looked bad in their stabilization modes but itd rather have a slightly less sharp video than a noisy blowout. imo
One thing I noticed right off the bat (and have seen in other review videos) is that DJI's non-superwide mode isn't fishy at all. Even GoPro HERO7's "linear" mode still doesn't look like a normal camera. As I've already invested in a HERO7, I'm hoping they will come out with a firmware update to resolve this... otherwise, yes, I will invest in DJI because I don't want my footage to look like it's from an action camera... and I don't want to have to fix it in post. Like the HERO7, the audio also sounds great and with the selfie screen, this is a great vlogging camera solution for a lot of people. HERO8 will undoubtedly have that front screen. I used to be so discouraged about gopros prices because I thought they were way too expensive for the size of the camera. But when you compare what these action cameras can do to point n shoots of the same price- I think it’s clear that action cams like gopros or the osmo are the way to go. So Glad dji is making action cams- they excel at everything!

I ordered a GoPro Hero 7 the day before DJI announced their Osmo Action. I watched Peter's video yesterday and also Kay W's and today I called GoPro to canceled my order. 20 minutes ago I ordered an Osmo Action from Adorama. Peter (and DJI) sold me on 3 key features: 1) Front 'selfie' screen. 2) "You can see the water drops on the railing way more clearly, than that of the Hero 7." -Peter McKinnon, better sharper detail. 3) The RockSteady Stabilization is actually better. Kay W did a similar test and you can see the difference on his test as well. You can use an external mic on the Hero 7, but checking the Q&A at DJI and confirming you can plug an external mic on their Osmo Action as well was the final selling point. I can't wait to get my hands on it! Thank you Peter! (and DJI!) 😎👍👍
Thanks for the test. I am sold for this cam and not osmo pocket. 1. Same price, 2. Better stablization. 3. Smaller than...more pocketable, 4. No curve and pump on the edge. 3x gimbals have...no 4x (kinda defeted the purpose). I am getting Osmo Action. Yes...still needs lots accessories...😜😆
A month ago I bought a Hero 7 Black, and I have been using it a lot. Favorite features include burst photos, Hypersmooth stabilization, Protune options (dull, low contrast, and medium and low sharpness settings that allow me to successfully make my own color contrast, and sharpness adjustments), and RAW still photos. It is not clear to me the the DJI Osmo Action camera offers at least the equivalent to Protune options, if not more. I really appreciate Peter's comparison video, but it was not clear to me that Peter had made all the equivalent setup settings (Protune, color, contrast, sharpness, etc.) that I would only ~guess~ both cameras offer.
True, GoPro in Protune flat and down sharpening turned all the way down can be matched to a Red camera quite well with some tricks in post. Just get a gimbal and you're good if not way better. The Osmo can just be matched to your average phone ...
hmmm.... need to see some POV action! I use the Hero 7 for mountain bike videos, im not sure that the Osmo Action is anywhere near wide enough for POV / chest mounted stuff. I've done a couple of comparisons . reviews with the GoPro on my channel... anyway, have purchase this Osmo to test it out on my MTB to see if its any good.

Without an 1/8" jack you need some kind of powered audio-adapter to take an external mic via 1/8" jack and bring it through the USB-C port. GoPro's cost $50, and while DJI doesn't list one for the Action yet, their version for the Osmo Pocket is $40.
Thank you for showing it's low light performance, you're the only reviewer that has so far done that. It seems the other reviewers are afraid to sully the GP7 when it comes to low light and refuse to show that honestly. Subscribed!
It stacks up well against the GoPro! I think the stabilization looked a little better on the Osmo! wow! Also, Peter legit ran for like 2 minutes around the block for a camera test, what a champ

1:23 is literally my favorite thing to do, peel off the film. You could make a B-roll video of you just doing that over and over and I'd be one happy camper.
Sony have better stabilization than GoPro but nobody use their action cameras (which is a shame), and DJI have much more experience in stabilizing cameras with gimbals and drones so that was to be expected.
its no magic! they crop only way more into the frame ( 20% vs 10%) ...You can do that on the GoPro as well if you zoom in camera digital. Hypersmooth works than even better but you get like on the osmo les imagequality. ...the real problem on the GoPro is it's 75Mit Bit rate which don't allow them to crop even more into the frame becaus of les detail in their textures
I typed DJI Osmo Action on youtube and Peter's Video came up as the first suggestion. So happy to see the progress Peter has made! Been here since a few thousand subscribers. Up to a few million now. 💪
Very well done. Thanks. I paid more attention to the low light performance during your audio test though. Even though the light isn't low on your face, it is in the background, and the noise artifacts I have come to know from Go Pro were mostly also present on the DJI.
I think the is the camera I'm going with for my next trip to the Philippines. It includes everything I've ever wanted in an action camera without the need of any bring along gear that will hold me back from the full experience of the trip while recording beautiful footage with my beautiful wife and daughter along the way.
That Rock Steady... is rock steady XD I do sometimes miss a bit of shake now and then, more for action videos (like off-roading), but for those needing a small camera with everything in one? Amazing! I just got the DJI Osmo Pocket and feeling my way around all its features too
The thing i miss from the old action cams as a Motocyclist is that the Wind noises are making big backsteps ... They try to make small cases and more microphones over the camera and then fix it with audio corrections BUT what was actually pretty good in gopro hero 3 and 4 i believe is that you had a mic on the back and together with the plastic case you had very good engine sounds with almost no wind sound... My solution to that would be they should make 2 mic or more: front and back and let you choose in the Menu wich one you want or all and automatic.... + they need cases with maybe small windfilters or something...
As far as I can tell the Osmo Action punks the GoPro in every way. Yes color seems a little flatter but I honestly prefer that as i grade in post. Another major thing i noticed which I am surprised you didnt mention unless I missed it is the GoPro image suffers from the fisheye effect lens warp waaaay more than the Osmo Action. Another win for the Osmo Action! Great overview and appreciate the information!

I agree! I have the gopro session 7 but it will now be my only gopro. I'll definitely be buying DJI action cameras from now on! I now own the DJI osmo mobile 2 gimbal, the Mavic Air and soon will be getting the Osmo Action!! :) DJI is going to become my #1 go-to for on the go footage. :)
Did you turn protune on on the GoPro? Because that improves your image quality and you can also choose the flat color profile which is better for color grading :)
I still don't understand the benefit on the front screen on an action cam unless you are using it for vlogging. Most of the mounts will be attached to your head or body facing away from you right?

Tuatara Taupo sell it and get the Osmo Action. You won’t be disappointed. Also: it’s cheaper. Around 50€ here in Germany.

Stabilization is awesome on DJI but the capture is not as wide as GoPro though... Wide angle capture

I think the is the camera I'm going with for my next trip to the Philippines. It includes everything I've ever wanted in an action camera without the need of any bring along gear that will hold me back from the full experience of the trip while recording beautiful footage with my beautiful wife and daughter along the way.

I was super impressed with the Hero 7 but man, DJI did a brilliant job, sharper image, better hdr and better stabilization... im completely sold
That Rock Steady... is rock steady XD I do sometimes miss a bit of shake now and then, more for action videos (like off-roading), but for those needing a small camera with everything in one? Amazing! I just got the DJI Osmo Pocket and feeling my way around all its features too

The thing i miss from the old action cams as a Motocyclist is that the Wind noises are making big backsteps ... They try to make small cases and more microphones over the camera and then fix it with audio corrections BUT what was actually pretty good in gopro hero 3 and 4 i believe is that you had a mic on the back and together with the plastic case you had very good engine sounds with almost no wind sound... My solution to that would be they should make 2 mic or more: front and back and let you choose in the Menu wich one you want or all and automatic.... + they need cases with maybe small windfilters or something...
I wish you did a 120 FPS comparison. I really hate the slomotion on the GoPro. That would make me switch right there.

As far as I can tell the Osmo Action punks the GoPro in every way. Yes color seems a little flatter but I honestly prefer that as i grade in post. Another major thing i noticed which I am surprised you didnt mention unless I missed it is the GoPro image suffers from the fisheye effect lens warp waaaay more than the Osmo Action. Another win for the Osmo Action! Great overview and appreciate the information!

I now own the DJI osmo mobile 2 gimbal, the Mavic Air and soon will be getting the Osmo Action!! :) DJI is going to become my #1 go-to for on the go footage. :)
Did you turn protune on on the GoPro? Because that improves your image quality and you can also choose the flat color profile which is better for color grading :)

I still don't understand the benefit on the front screen on an action cam unless you are using it for vlogging. Most of the mounts will be attached to your head or body facing away from you right?
