You are rapidly becoming my favourite teacher on RUclips. I like the balance of practical skills, theory and having fun. I learned a lot from this video. Not least is that I will not be buying a carbon fibre guitar.
Much appreciation Sean! this is one of those golden laws of understanding - a light bulb moment, the harmony of firing multiple neurons resonating in deep Space-time, pure music energy! da Force!
I feel like this video moves really fast and provides a lot of info really quickly. It’s honestly perfect for where I am at learning wise on guitar. Great help
Sean I’ve been learning to play guitar for about 7 months now and your videos have helped accelerate my knowledge on this instrument more than any other video or creator on here. Trying to link scales I’ve learned to chords and keys has been my biggest struggle so far so this helps a ton. I’d love more of these videos man keep up the great work man.
@@44scoots looks like it, sounds like it... but I am only guessing. But good for you if you know better. Lemme edit my guess. I don't care what it costs. The lesson is the value.
I love playing the Key of D Major from the 4th Position G for that G Lydian flavor and then play the Minor Pentatonic from the 3rd Position F# for a super classy sound!
It's funny how I get ads on these videos telling me how RUclips is the worst place to go for guitar lessons, yet I have learned entirely all of the theory I know from Sean Daniel's channel. Much respect, and thanks for what you do!
Thanks, Sean! I've told several people that D is the Key of the Year! I'd love to see a video extensively about the relationship between the Keys of D Major and D Minor and doing trade-offs between them.
Super nice lesson Sean! Easy to get a very nice majestic kind of sound using these tips. That's right down my street. Guess that comes from being a dyed in the wool Moody Blues fan of old. Fabulous thing that relative minor landing on the 6th degree of the scale! Brilliant! Solid gold! Many, many thanks! Be well, stay safe my friend. The pale rider is definitely in the land. Melodramatic old Dave in the Adirondacks 👨🚀🎸
Definitely more of this kind of lesson please. It’s was fascinating. Coincidently last week was exploring Dm key which was a wonderful rabbit hole. Thanks so much for making the vid.
Thank you Sean, I really liked this lesson, and got some great ideas to conquer boring chord progressions. You are a sage for naming key of D as key of 2020. 😄
Wow. Awesome lesson for an intermediate player. Centering key D but going through some theory reminders and useful playing techniques, wow. Your best lesson in this simi advanced player.
This was a great lesson as it helps me with soloing on a couple pop songs I’m learning in the key of D major. I’m more of a blues rock player and tend to favor the minor keys and minor pentatonic blues scales so not familiar with major scales.
I have found that I can anchor my ring finger on that D note of the B string and work easily between the I, IV, V, and vi chords as D, G, Asus4, and Bm7 (played with the barre and the 3rd and 4th fingers-but actually quite comfortable IMO). The D and G could become sus2's if you open the high E or A strings, respectively. This could be useful to less advanced players because your hand is anchored and you won't miss your spot going in and out of that barred Bm chord.
That was an interesting twist, linking the chords, to arpeggios, to the relative minor More 'heads up' along these lines would be stunning *Duh moment* I'd never linked the open strings were all in the key of D - thanks for that especially
Ok...ok...2nd video I've watched now...ya got a new subscriber..RUclips needs more teachers like you bro, knowledgeable, to the point,& a SENSE OF HUMOR as well...keep it up man,the "Newbies" will keep rolling in!!!! Best of luck bro...😎🎸🎼🎸👍
in the key of D, the hard chord in a quick transition is F#m and Bm. The easy Bm is Bm7 which is on frets 202020. With a bit of practice, it is an easy chord and it sounds good
awesome presentation for 2020 bro. Entertaining and Informative ! I loved the " Extended Jazz people prottion intro statement " of which I am :) LOL still can't stop smiling. Thanks great to get back to roots . Good luck with your Soap Opera Carrier :)
As soon as I learned to play D, G, A, and E minor 40 years ago, I used it to write 500 songs... 20 - 30 of them were actually pretty good. My favorite move in D is to go from Em (the ii chord) to G (the IV chord) then back to Em. This works great for the Bridge.
I get confused easy, we do Atlantic City in the chords f sharp , a, d,a , when I play licks I start out of the a cowboy chord , , my question is how do you know for sure what key you are in ? I guess I’m in the key of A but the first chord of the song is F sharp.
Agree. I'd like to see something similar in other keys. This was a cool lesson that did help me see how to relate the minor pentatonic to the key of a song.
Haaa, Epiphany time! You just (accidentally/coincidentally?) connected a few music theory dots that I've read & heard about (numerous times over now) and was consciously aware of, but truly lacked in understanding or 'getting it' with full conviction. At the same time while watching your video, for the third time now I might add. I have a poster with the 'Circle of Fifths' hanging on the wall, and I just discovered exactly how it functions by showing the key with its notes/chords (1-6) in addition to figuring out its relative minor/major..... Now I'm wondering if there's more hidden in this little circle of wonder I'm blissfully unaware of. Funny how one can spend so much time learning something but never truly understanding it until someone says or shows something. Then, all of a sudden, like a bolt of lightning and as if overcome with a rush of insight, BAMMM, I FINALLY GET IT........ I guess sometimes we just make the simplest things we don't understand so overly complicated, that it's hard to digest and understand what it is we are actually learning at that time. Thanks Bro!!!!!!!!!!
A blues in D is cool too. The minor 7th C and the minor third F are at the 3rd fret, bend and release to open A or D. Trill the G-string to A-flat, if you're nasty.
This video is awesome! "Advanced" beginner Question- After practicing and jamming around (using these chords) I found myself using the E chord more often. Is this ok? I would still come home to the D chord, but it almost felt as if the E chord wanted to be home. -Curious Guitar Player-
I've paid 50$ a lesson for weeks at a time and in 10 minutes, you've helped me connect the dots for free. Thank you Sean!

Hahah, fair enough.
Yeah....I learned that I AM A WOOD MAN myself LMAO

Excellent lesson, as usual, Sean. Love the “ in D structable”.
more great stuff!!! i like when u mix the scales w/ the chords together and now w/ that arpeggio salsa!!! man i think i can!!! i think i can !!!
That chimey F# minor, the Em and the D are the essentials of "Eight Miles High", I think (along with a G). Fantastic combination

"Every AC/DC Song" is in A mixolydian to be exactly. Basically the same chords as D major, but the 'Homebase' is on A instead of D.

I like playing in E so I'm just gonna tune the guitar to D Standard for 2020 just to be cool
Corey Hicks the chords are Definately a little bit for full In the key of E. I do that tuning a lot too.
This video is awesome! "Advanced" beginner Question- After practicing and jamming around (using these chords) I found myself using the E chord more often. Is this ok? I would still come home to the D chord, but it almost felt as if the E chord wanted to be home. -Curious Guitar Player-
Love the sound of the Dsus4/sus2. I've heard it both in old (Give Me Love - George Harrison) and new (Right Before My Eyes - Cage the Elephant) songs
Ah yes, George loves his sus chords. He does it in Here Comes the Sun as well, although it’s capo’d up so it’s not in D, but he uses the d shape
Key of D, great for Drop D tuning also, can still do everything Sean does on the Low E, just move up 2 frets.
And use the C chord as the Flat 7 chord.
GREAT lesson!!
