Man, all of that individual talent together, doing one of Led Zeppelin's greatest songs!! John Paul, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, and all the other great artists... thanks!!!
I just stumbled upon this and I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a more beautiful version of this song. I’m totally blown away. John Paul Jones is amazing.
Ah man…you lucky lucky lucky bastards…what an incredible opportunity to play with such a giant and living legend. I’m totally and completely impressed with JPJ, his musicianship, legacy and authentic humility…he’s so great they named two popes after him
I'm blown away by what they did with the bridge section here. On the original, Led Zeppelin used Robert's best ethereal howl and a healthy dose of reverb to give it that faraway dark sound, but here they use bluegrass harmonies, and even though they don't sound the same, they still convey almost exactly the same emotion as the original. Magical.
YES! I was looking for this comment! However they added that edge to it - it feels more minor, maybe there's a dominant 7th or something in there, my ear isn't good enough to know - but they were all SO tight on those harmonies. I literally gasped
Thin White Axe !! Superb name my friend...splendid breakdown man..you got led zep in your heart ...I know that..this was sublime !! Just magical..!!! Much respect brother/sister
JPJ never fails to amaze. The man is an absolute natural prodigy. I've watched a half-dozen different versions of this song, and he floats along/over/with each one like it's the hundredth time he's done it. What a talent!!
For 5 people, no effects, it is the best I have ever heard. They were magnificent. The bass was on a seperate channel, I will give that. The 4 performers on the front were on 1 microphone, and I do not know how that could be auto tuned. 4 singers, 4 string instruments, 1 microphone.
I’m very late to the party but would like to say thanks for sharing this sparkling gem of a live performance. What gorgeous playing and sensitive ensemble work! This is possibly the finest rendition of the song I’ve ever heard.
Richard Thompson recently said of David Rawlings -- "he plays leads, rhythm and sings-- he's brilliant." High praise and so true. So good to see JPJ in there -- royalty!
I just listened to this for the first time ever. Wow! I never knew there was another version of this song so perfectly performed, and it's live!!! These guys should be eternally proud of this performance!
I love the way John Paul weaves the mandolin in and around the voices of 3 separate guitars... so warming to see him playing with Dave and Gillian... he is an evolving man (though this was an old song for him).
SICK - THAT is how it is done, one mic, pure talent, nowhere to hide! Welch and Rawlings can do no wrong, JPJ is a true legend, and the song is, well... what can one say about the Mighty Zeppelin?
Well damn, this is simply sweet. As someone who grew up during the classic rock era, it became tiresome to keep hearing the same version of the same songs over and over again. I appreciate the artistry and skills of the players here. Thank you for posting this, peace 💚
Had the pleasure of seeing these folks perform this particular piece. It was 2 days before Thanksgiving in Athens, GA (a college town). Folks still packed the place out. The crowd demanded so many encores (3 or 4 if I recall) that the group had to huddle on stage to figure out what to play next since they had exhausted all their material. Wound up doing some impromptu O' Brother Where Art Thou? One of the best concerts I've ever attended.
I was there too. At the Georgia Theater. Best show I’ve ever seen in Athens…or anywhere. I believe this video may be from them warming up in a back room at the Georgia Theater before that show.
WOW!! JPL an all around favorite musician. Going to California with an aching in my heart, and someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair. Rawlings sounds the exact right fit for this classic song. “the days when things were really nice and simple, and everything was far out all the time"
Wow ....the musicianship on this is incredible. The interplay between the mandolin and the guitar is brilliant. Obviously in the original Robert Plant's voice back then was the cherry on top. This is still brilliant in a different way and adding in the harmonies takes it to a different place which is still amazing. They nailed the feeling and atmosphere of the song.....the longing and melancholy and joy all wrapped up together. I am a instant fan!!!!!
I saw Dave Rawlings Machine in they June. They were absolutely incredible. The fact that I had the privilege of hearing JPJ play Going to California in a small venue is great, but it doesn't make up for the fact that I was too young to see Led Zeppelin live.
Absolutely stunning, amazing, outstanding, haunting and beautiful - bravo 👏 I was lucky enough to see the Dave Rawlings Machine in Sydney at the Enmore theatre and they blew me away. Incredible musicianship - with a feeling … very difficult to do 🙏
Legend has it that the first performance in public of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss was at an open mike night in a pub near to Kidderminster (in England's midlands to those who don't know it), which isn't far from Plant's house. Imagine that, if true !
I saw the show at the Georgia Theater in Athens, and it was one of the top 2 or 3 concerts I have ever attended. Awesome musicians having a good time. I didn't know John Paul Jones was playing with them. I must admit I was a little awestruck being 4 rows away from a member of Zeppelin. Great musician.
Saw these guys last night in L.A.! They played this song as their encore. Was really a great show that I believe everyone enjoyed! All of these 5 in the picture here were at the show and just extremely full of talent, as you should be able to see and hear.
I’ll tell you what’s real about this……….. Is that I’ve only recently gotten into Dave and Gillian. Their music has hit me on a DEEP level…….. NOW I find THIS???? With JPG???? Music IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE!!!!!$
This playlist is truly unbelievable as it is like I did it. Keep thinking well the next one will seperate things and nope. We must be brothers from another man truly
I've watched & listended to this a few times now. It is just the best thing I've ever seen & heard. I'm not a huge Zep fan, but I love this song and so do Dave, Gillian & Willie. They are just in awe of JPJ and he plays it beautifully. The singing is perfect, the harmonies sublime, David's guitar part is subtle and everybody in the group is in love with this performance. I can't imagine anything better.
Whenever I feel that inevitable need to release that built up tension, soften up and let go of that pent up steam. All I need do is listen, watch and inevitably sigh. Thanks guys, for all your efforts, I will always stop by and give this recording "a much needed listening to". All the best and take care... :)
One of my favourites. There's just an intangible buzz here...it's as if all the instruments decided to hum to match the intertwined beauty of John Paul Jones, Gillian Welch, and Dave Rawlings!
Saw them perform this in Athens, GA couple of years ago. I think it was their 2nd or 3rd encore. Fabulous ensemble. Whole show one of the best I've seen.
I saw it too. A lot of people say it was one of the top couple shows they've seen. I agree. I met JPJ afterwards. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
Saw them last night at the beautifully restored Cascade Theater here in Redding California. Great show and John Paul Jones did just fine on the Mandolin.
Gorgeous.
Five people around a mic playing a song.
Just flippin' gorgeous.
Man, all of that individual talent together, doing one of Led Zeppelin's greatest songs!! John Paul, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, and all the other great artists... thanks!!!
That’s Willie Watson on the right
I just stumbled upon this and I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a more beautiful version of this song. I’m totally blown away. John Paul Jones is amazing.

Massive respect and admiration to ALL of these musicians.
And an American Naval hero !
I'm blown away by what they did with the bridge section here. 🙏
I drove from Greenville SC to see this show in Athens. Best money on gas I ever spent.
i heard it too
JPJ never fails to amaze. The man is an absolute natural prodigy. I've watched a half-dozen different versions of this song, and he floats along/over/with each one like it's the hundredth time he's done it. What a talent!!
I think you got the name of Willem Dafoe wrong there.
@@pmbbmp I think they mean the hundredth time he's played each version.
This has to be one of the best live renditions of this song. Fantastic vocals, harmonies and playing!
Folk royalty cast right here
For 5 people, no effects, it is the best I have ever heard. They were magnificent. The bass was on a seperate channel, I will give that. The 4 performers on the front were on 1 microphone, and I do not know how that could be auto tuned. 4 singers, 4 string instruments, 1 microphone.
I see you Gillian. Kicking ass as usual
Beautiful rendition. Love that JPJ continues to play with young musicians in just about any setting. Great take on this song.
Plays with old ones like Seasick Steve also. Very, very accomplished muso is our JPJ.
I’m very late to the party but would like to say thanks for sharing this sparkling gem of a live performance. What gorgeous playing and sensitive ensemble work! This is possibly the finest rendition of the song I’ve ever heard.
JPJ. The most underrated but best musician in Led Zeppelin.
I totally agree.
What a lovely person he is too
...John Paul...Willie...Gillian - and, David...this is so damned hauntingly beautiful...
Fantastic Cover of an Absolute Classic J.P.J. is and always will be Absolute Top Draw, An Incredible Musician ⭐️🌞🙌❤️
love how you can always actually _see_ Gillian listening real real hard. I love that
That's the best part
I'm so happy that this exists.
God, what would life be without such great music?
Absolutely Meaningless
Richard Thompson recently said of David Rawlings -- "he plays leads, rhythm and sings-- he's brilliant." High praise and so true. So good to see JPJ in there -- royalty!
I am VERY picky about music, and I like Dave's stuff equal to Gillian.
I don't know why this waited 8 years to find me but I'm glad it did, just awesome 👍
I just listened to this for the first time ever. Wow! I never knew there was another version of this song so perfectly performed, and it's live!!! These guys should be eternally proud of this performance!
Hats off to the bass player.
I couldn't imagine having to play something JPJ wrote less than 4 feet from him. Lol
I love the way John Paul weaves the mandolin in and around the voices of 3 separate guitars... so warming to see him playing with Dave and Gillian... he is an evolving man (though this was an old song for him).
I thought there were a few funny moments between him and Dave, with both of them filling in the same spaces. What superb musicians, though.
you can hear him giving little checks. love his contributions, this is among my favs.
... and seven years later, it is still perfection.
SICK - THAT is how it is done, one mic, pure talent, nowhere to hide! Welch and Rawlings can do no wrong, JPJ is a true legend, and the song is, well... what can one say about the Mighty Zeppelin?
I can't say I have ever seen or heard anything as good as this except for the real led Zeppelin version live . NICE 👍!
I love the intimacy of this space, and the careful landing at the end, like the soft touchdown of a jet plane.
How many people watching this, miss the fact that it's JPJ on mandolin? Great share. Thanks!

Was just noticing that.Awesome
Wow!!✌️✌️✌️👽👽👽
I love how intently they are all listening to each other.
That was exquisite. Stunning. Unbelievable.
Well damn, this is simply sweet. As someone who grew up during the classic rock era, it became tiresome to keep hearing the same version of the same songs over and over again. I appreciate the artistry and skills of the players here. Thank you for posting this, peace 💚
Nice to find on a chilly but sunny California Sunday morning. Well played sir.
I saw them performing this song with John Paul Jones in Telluride and it was spectacular!
Had the pleasure of seeing these folks perform this particular piece. It was 2 days before Thanksgiving in Athens, GA (a college town). Folks still packed the place out. I was very impressed by your singing and performance.
Bless you.
From Japan.
Wow... I'm melted into a puddle of ♥♪ What a treat and pure pleasure ♫
That was an impressive rendition of a long loved song. Wow is John Paul Jones talented.
I just met a man in a guitar shop named Terry who told me about this group, very happy he did! Wonderful sound!
A great version of a classic.
Blown away. Beautiful. Love how the other vocalists lend a hand and lift him up during the challenging parts. Real humans.
WOW!! JPL an all around favorite musician. Going to California with an aching in my heart,

What a great version of an incredible song
I love how Willie Watson can just play like he's been there for ever!,!!!
He has man that dudes immortal
Willie Watson a true talent, a true Folk singer…✌️✌️✌️
Dave you nailed the vocals. You all are a living Talent.
That's an insane amount of talent, all in sync. Crazy!
we all just need a moment of silence after that amazing series of moments!
Wow ....the musicianship on this is incredible. The interplay between the mandolin and the guitar is brilliant. Obviously in the original Robert Plant's voice back then was the cherry on top. Everything from Gillian and Dave feels so intimate.

The pure joy they show in making this music whole thing is amazing
I absolutely LOVE this version with John Paul ! :)
How are those two young guys not constantly thinking, "Holy shit, I'm playing Led Zeppelin with John Paul Jones and Gillian Welch?!"
Well, maybe they are thinking that...
i think their mugs were doing just that
It's the other way around. He's pinching himself because he's playing with Gillian & Dave.
@@VictorRochaGaming lol, nope. ;-}
Aren't those 2 young guys part of the band with Dave and Gillian?
Imagine running into them in a pub. You’ll never go home anymore
Legend has it that the first performance in public of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss was at an open mike night in a pub near to Kidderminster (in England's midlands to those who don't know it), which isn't far from Plant's house.

This is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! Every gear and on every level.Im devastated!! And with Jonesy too!!
With performances like this Zep will live forever.🔥

Effortlessly brilliant.
I saw David and John Paul at the Bowery Balloon in a Gillian concert. They were astonishing. I don't think I have ever heard anything better
The English folk nuances in Zeppelin music blends so well with American folk music.
JPJ....what a brilliant musician and humble beautiful person
And, all so beautifully done here....❤
Saw these guys last night in L.A.! They played this song as their encore. Was really a great show that I believe everyone enjoyed! All of these 5 in the picture here were at the show and just extremely full of talent, as you should be able to see and hear.

Awesome! Saw Led Zeppelin in '77 in St. Louis. Great job!!
Lovely!!!!!!! Makes my body want to just explode with I don't know what. Thank you.
I've watched & listended to this a few times now. It is just the best thing I've ever seen & heard. I'm not a huge Zep fan, but I love this song and so do Dave, Gillian & Willie. Wow. My day can't be terrible after I've watched this.
Anyone else spot how amazing the bass player is? That's some tasteful work
He really is!!!
Did you notice Gillian Welch supporting him? I love dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch!
Wow, this rendition really captures soulful, earthy, folk blues. Wonderful!
Incredible music tremendous blend of serious talent here, beautiful - God help the thumbs down people

Still current, still alive, timeless...
What a gem!
great tune, beautiful work after all these years, John paul still has it!
Absolutely beautiful work.
Nice share, Dave! Thanks for the vid!
I saw this show in St Louis....I can almost remember every note!
One of my favourites. There's just an intangible buzz here...it's as if all the instruments decided to hum to match the intertwined beauty of John Paul Jones, Gillian Welch, and Dave Rawlings!
That was a thoughtful/sensitive/beautiful rendition of a great old song. Very nicely done.
Live and Breathing always knocks it out of the park!
Such amazing musicians! This short tour was a cant miss!
Saw them in Boulder a few months ago. What a great show.
Beautiful and that Bass with a bow.....wow!
Thank you JPJ!
an absolute masterclass in harmony
I got to see this exact lineup in Birmingham a few years back. Great show!
This is just so damn good. Having John Paul Jones makes it extra special.
Saw them last night at the beautifully restored Cascade Theater here in Redding California. Great show and John Paul Jones did just fine on the Mandolin.
John Paul is a beast on mandolin.
Beautiful. I love the addition of harmonies. Some of my fav musicians right there in one spot wow.
Beautiful tune, mesmerizing performance. And 55 people never got to California.
So amazing!! Thank you all, I needed that at this very moment! So inspired!!
Love it . Sounds great !!!
How did I just I find these guys? Glad I did wow
Very nice revisit to "Going to California". Sounds different, very rich guitar work, and fresh voices. Good job!
whew, really great stuff. excellent musicians playing a very good song, definitely organic
Willie Watson on guitar!! I miss him in OCMS.
Thank you for posting ! 1st class Best regards Steve in York. UK
Very nice, what a enjoyable find. Made me smile, thanks!
What a beautiful version!
