I'm pushing 20 years welding and I've seen alot. I've seen so many miller's break down on the job or just stop welding for no apparent reason. To each there own and welders can agree to disagree. But I think Lincolns are a true work horse in the industry.

Thanks for the videos Austin. I've been welding everything, with everything for the best part of 40 years, but I'm still inspired by a new way of think or an approach to a technique I would normally take for granted. I've used a few of your techniques, and it's put a smile on my face and fire in my belly. So, you really can teach an old dog new tricks. Thanks for all your efforts, much appreciated.

A lot of Truth to what you have said, I started with an SA200, through help of our "seasoned brothers" I learned how to, you said it, manipulate, both machine and puddle, tough Continental motors, love the sound, leaking oil, spun bearing knocking never quit on me, bought Miller 300 for generator/ camping, hated it, until I learned how to let the machine do the work for me, loved the simplicity and at the pump$, quieter lighter and AC power, my oldest son still using it, I have 3 other Miller's including Big 40 with Continental, Yes, shoulder to holder, no matter what is at other end of cables, you have to learn to manipulate both machine and puddle, 30 yrs experience, I agree 100% well said, I tip my cap I never have forgotten to those who helped me along the way, I teach welding now at a Colligate school

Great advice on the cover pass. To hot and fast tend to create undercut, not letting it fill at the toes, something I worked for a while. Still slowing down running cooler amps. Easier to control as a fairly newbie.

I believe the word you were looking for when describing the Miller’s was that they’re inverter style engine drives. Inverters can allow you to set the arc characteristics to whatever you want, however I don’t care for leaving my livelihood outside while it has electronic components that are more prone to failure rather than having a traditional rheostat or Rheostat/ Potentiometer on the SAE.

I run a Miller 350 pipe pro…… love the machine. one big difference I’ve noticed from a Lincoln is metal deposition, with a Lincoln you can “pile” so to say more metal than a Miller and that’s the straight DC characteristics compared to the inverter machines… but the Miller is a smoother machine and those electronics are what make it….. but like you said it still comes back to the guy holding the stinger at the end of the day👍

    • @broberts146

The hot start on those pipe pros is great on smaller pipe like 2". I do know what your talking about when it comes to the metal deposition, definitely likes to run a flatter cap

Own an older Hobart 500 amp diesel , also own gas driven Miller, and a gas driven Hobart, all 20 plus years old and each one is different in puddle configuration. The 500 is the baby that never flutters in the puddle. After almost 50 years of welding is the only way I can describe it.

When I started out it was 6010 bead a 7010hyp there after . With Hyp I learned the art of capping with as little manipulation as possible . Going down the side one would long arc it a little more than normal and tip the rod back and use arc blow to keep the puddle up . The longer arc would widen the puddle out and seemed more controllable . As one went down the pipe just catching the bevel over a flush fill one would watch the slag above and on the sides where the metal was being deposited . . On the sides would form distinct balls of darker slag on each side . This meant the cap was all most going on like low hydrogen down hand ,very smooth ripples . Today that does not happen with the 8010 g like that. The weld metal seems to solidify quicker and having those balls of slag like that means the weld metal has not quite flowed to the edge, hence you have to manipulate the rod more to get a better cap . The tops and bottoms are put on with a kind whipping motion and of coarse with a longer arc on the bottom . With the whipping motion one just catches the bevels as well . practiced it will look like a stack of dimes and uniform . The more you go past the bevel the greater the chance of getting pin holes . My welding Machine was a Lincoln 200 . I have used other machines but getting service for them was a problem . Even the Lincoln servicing could be a problem because you could count on one hand the people that were good at it in western Canada . Today up here if I was to start out in the business I would get a lincoln 305g . Reason cheap, light and they would weld similar things as a 200 would . Anyways good vid Austin

I have a Miller big 40 and a 1945 general electric. I have used the sa200. The 200 welded great up to its duty cycle but then would get hot and the arc would loose its punch and waver a lot. Shut it off let it cool and it would be fine for a.while. I don't see how pipelines put up with that. With the big 40 you can go all day 100 percent below 300 amps.

His facing seam is narrow, dense and quite high in 3 passes of the weld. To make a beautiful seam, I make 4 or 5 passes. Tell me what am I doing wrong? Miller Big Blue 500x. pipes 20 inches, wall thickness 3/16 inches. Thanks.
