I see u guys trying to concentrate on only one welding process, don't, learn them all, if u do your welding jobs are endless tig ,mig, stick, learn it all then u can go and do anything !
It’s true! A welder can do any process on at any position. In this field a welder is a welder first and foremost. Young people getting into this trade shouldn’t label themselves
Also when you weld bend your rod's. If you have your rod straight in the stinger your out of position for your body. Clamp it into your stinger and bent the rod end 45 degree this will get you your stinger to be closer to the pipe allowing you for more support and there for a better weld.

I was required to pass a 6010 open butt 6” pipe test on a 45 degree for an apprenticeship. The test had to be up hand not down. Does it make a difference? Nice video 👍🏻
It depends on the code. API 1104 which is the code for pipeline runs down hand. ASME Section IX is for bojlers and pressure vessels runs the root up hand.
u should do a video of preparation before welding it, preheating and whats the right temperature to weld it etc. btw just started following and really like your videos keep it up 👍👍👍
Buy of Craigslist yourself an old buzzbox than jump on Ebay and get yourself a 300amp rectifier and with some sheet steel and lead connectors you now have a full AC/DC welder you can use for stick at home with up to 200amp no problem. cost you maybe $150 all in all.
That's a different technique as here in Australia on 6-8 inch pipe we use 4 tacks(prevent gap change from one side to the other), weld over head to vertically up, with a key hole and a flick motion. This is so foreign as how do you know if the root run is going well if you can't see it when welding.
6010/6011 was hard to weld with but once you get a little bit of weld time you’ll get to know what you need to work with.. keep up the good work teaching.. that’s the best way is to practice and learn different techniques

5P+ really ? They flow to much and you can hide to easy your undercut mistakes with them. Use just the 5P so you learn your weld and welding pool better especially for overhead the 5P produces less fluid than the 5P+. Boehler Rods by voestalpine are a international pipeliner standard. Guess you ain't much into the welding yet otherwise you would know this product. BÖHLER FOX CEL are great for vertical-down welding. And than for your fill I would recommend BÖHLER FOX CEL 80-P which are 8010 or BÖHLER FOX EV 65 if you need to do vertical up which are A5.5: E8018-GH4R / E8018-D1H4R. Best method to learn is on a 6-8" pipe sch 40 in a fixed 45 tilt position at waist high of the ground. It is the most uncomfortable position to weld in because you can't sit or kneel and you can't stand in a relaxed position either. So 1 knee down is for me the best method and than put yourself a support brace somewhere against the pipe and play around with 6010 from root to full fill with it. This way you learn best how the rod flows. Do this for a few days. Also reuse your materials so learn cutting with the torch and grinding it. leave dirt behind on the pipe so you also learn how it welds when the material ain't clean this way you can later spot, stop and fix it before you been kicked of the job because you screwed welds up all the way. Nothing wrong with stopping and taking back out the root you just started because someone didn't clean it enough, sometimes acetone is your best friend on a china dirty pipe which happens to be used more than you think. Weld also with a lot of start stops. Most important for you tie, tag and later on take over job's.
And don't use dewalt.... get yourself some real quality grinders. Makita, Bosch, Hitachi, Milwaulkee in that order. Dewalts just burn up to quickly and are just to cheaply made. If you are out there and you run cord tools you are limited, go battery at least 5amp and have a dual charger by your rig sitting so your helper can swamp them out for you. Always TAG your Equipment so nobody walks off with it. 5AMP grinder last me about 4h so 2 battery in a 8h shift but I run 4 different grinders with 12 6AMP Makita Batteries now with a dual and quad port charger. The better you prep the better your weld gonna be.

I like a 1/8 gap with a 1/8 landing. I noticed he was going downhill. Is that just because he's trying to get out on the pipeline. We run this same 6010 rods at school and I struggle with running them downhill. I just choke the rod too much and the arc cuts out. But I'm really good with them root passes traveling uphill. Hello WeldLab, I am attaching a cylinder to my mower blade which is flat. What angle do you recommend, 45 degrees? The cylinder will be upright and the mower blade will be flat on my work table? Thanks for any tips.
I was trying to learn on some pipe at school before I go to my welding school @ college and I had a 6010 1/8th on 45-55 amps and it kept getting stuck and everything I am very professional at my horizontal welds and welding square pipe together but for some reason I could. Not get the 6010 to stay arched I keep screwing up and I spent so much time putting a bevel in this pipe I even measured 1/8 gap in between bevel with the other 6010 rod and I racked it and I litersly could not keep my weld going either stuck or it would light and spit and spit idk what I’m doing wrong I wanna do it right or at least get it going before I have my teacher help he used to be a pipe liner guy any help would be awesome . I want to peruse my dream in welding pipes
one of the things i noticed was i think he needs to get ahold of his stinger. the pipeliner that showed me used cuss words and refeneces but basically choke up on it near the rod so you have control and can push it in. now a lot of times i actually put my index finger on the rod to "point" while running the bead.
We would just knock the paint off the fittings , then crank up the welder to 6and6 tack with no gap , then fire up and shove the ark inside the pipe and lay that rod over to about 45 ' and let it consume itself, going down hand or up same and without a gap you have less to fill by a third at least.. lays down a beautiful root ! try it you'll like it.
Think of your rod angle as the a gand on a clock. If you keep the tip of the rod towards center of pipe, you'll be just fine. The galactic empire approves.
don't know about the rest of the world ? ~ but in england welding is one of the few professions that requires regular testing ! not even surgeons have to do that . + eventually your sweat smells like metal
Some machines can’t run 6010 rods. Check to see if yours can. If it can’t, I’d suggest trying 6011; pretty much the same thing as 6010 but can be run on AC and will work on all machines. Hope this helps!

Ps I always use red Lincoln 6010 my personal choice but shit I can’t find it hard to fine the red 6010.
I was having problems it would open up a big keyhole like tear apart the bevel and would loose control and no matter how low i would go from like 40-20 and it would still blow it iam guessing it was my rod angle sch80 12 inch pipe thought i had maybe put to lay back of a bevel and thined it but i dont thinks so or may be a mixture of both
I like a 1/8 gap with a 1/8 landing. I noticed he was going downhill. Is that just because he's trying to get out on the pipeline. We run this same 6010 rods at school and I struggle with running them downhill. I just choke the rod too much and the arc cuts out. But I'm really good with them root passes traveling uphill. I usually whip/pack it.
I’m trying to weld my muffler pipe, but no success. I get too much spatter and burn holes. I’m using 6013.
Damn that gap look like the river congo 🇨🇬. Saw blade c’mon man. Try 1/8 land 1/8 gap 1/8 6010 thats og
Think of your rod angle as the a gand on a clock. If you keep the tip of the rod towards center of pipe, you'll be just fine. The galactic empire approves.
Im trying to have a one on one to get my 6010 root correct.... shoutouts from Laredo
🔥🔥 you ll get it im trying to work on something to teach a few guys
TheWeldLab I’m on in to learn brother
Man am from laredo too
His finger tips of his gloves r pretty ratty.... when I first started welding I went through gloves as well.... keep plugging my dude.
This dude went out and bought a whole ass red face before he could even weld 6010 wtf 😂😂
And a 3500 drw which looks to be a high country
Can you explain the difference between the rods and what to use for what job/ material thanks. From Mexico
don't know about the rest of the world ? ~ but in england welding is one of the few professions that requires regular testing ! not even surgeons have to do that . + eventually your sweat smells like metal
What's with all the down hand pipe welding always was tought in my 30+ years in the trade uphill
Question. Where do u folks get a big pipe thick like this to practice welding?
I'm old man now been welding all kinds for over 40 years I think I tried using 6010 one time.
I never try downhill..
Uphill is much easy to move your body to get the correct angle...
Way to help your dude out man! Hope he gets it nailed down so he can start making that $$$. Great video 🤙
grabbed a red face a few months ago for $300 runs good. steal of the year lol
What 300!!!
That’s badass man !
Appreciate your videos good tips u leave on here am electrician but doing lil welding at home
hope i can teach you a thing or two
I never weld pipe I always did flat I’m very good flat it’s just going up hill lord I need some help
Make some cinematics of you welding thatll be badass
Welding rigs in Texas are busted as fuck compared to the ones up here in alberta .... but you guys get er done
Help me more techinique in pipe welding specislly in 6G arc welding..thsnk you sir
✌️ great instructions!! 👍👍 thank you,Homie!! 🙏🏿☝️✌️
In the petroleum industry, welding downhill is not accepted. Coded pipe welders only weld uphill.
I love how his friend have them pipes stocked up over there😂
That man is down for business
I got a question is the root supposed to be thin when going downhill
what you mean? width?
TheWeldLab yeah the width cause when I weld downhill it comes out thinner but when I do the root uphill the bead comes out wider
Would be a much more informative video if showed final product with proper angle.
Yo Rico I’m doin 5G downhill in class and these tips helps alot but I have to hand bevel my pipe
Learned more here then the welding school I’m at and I’m half way through the curriculum
I tried it yesterday again and I couldnt make it work carnal ! I got some linconl 6010 +++++
Ok ok what’s seems to be the issue that you having ?
@@TheWeldLab cant keep the rod on
@@TheWeldLab i don't know if its the motion im doing maybe too fast or too slow i dont even know
Some machines can’t run 6010 rods. Check to see if yours can. If it can’t, I’d suggest trying 6011; pretty much the same thing as 6010 but can be run on AC and will work on all machines. Hope this helps!
Weld as if you are pointing at the center of the pipe with just enough travel angle as you would on each out of position angle
I never ran my root downhill. Guess I should have tried
but I dont weld much anymore.
The hardest part is getting the good rod angle thats the most important thing once u figure that out everything else will get easier
Beautiful!
