I stated welding for a heavy equipment dealership when I was 21 years old, welded and machinist for several job shops where you fixed anything that walked in the door, a few years with med. to light manufacturing company in engineering, one heavy fabrication shop as well as my shop at home. I'm now 64, still working, when someone asks what I do I tell them the truth " I'm learning how to weld. " And that's why I'm watching this because no matter your experience level or your smarts the real detail information that only one welder can tell another is found here. For you younger guys just starting out and you old hands that think you know it all--this is the place to be. A lifetime is not long enough to learn all you really need to know.

My grandfather started welding in the 1930s and he passed down some of his techniques with me. He would never whip a root in a pipe regardless if it was uphill or down hill. When I went to welding school they told me I couldn’t drag a root in pipe uphill until I did it. Bob thank you for showing people the right way might not only be one way.

Flame James just because it’s a flip up style hood doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a auto change lens in it which he clearly does from the purple tint it had to it. Both are using auto changers.

    • @titanary68
      @titanary68 6 лет назад +13

Flame James force of habit I assume. Go to 14:40, he has his hood up and his lense up and you can see through the back of it and clearly see the background through the lense. Also pay attention to the front of his lense, it has 5 or 6 of the solar photo eyes on the top right corner. Trust me, it’s an auto changer. The old guy is strictly a shop welder/instructor and clearly sponsored by ESAB. The youngster is wearing a Outlaw Leather hood, which is the most common hood used in the Houston plant industry, but nevertheless both have auto change lenses

I learned to weld from an old school guy starting at 12 years old. I got to the point of welding mild steel and stainless steel bases together for industrial systems that sit on the rooftops of commercial buildings. I was certified and also welded lifting lugs that the helicopters use to hoist these systems in the air. I had a different technique than my teacher and the students I helped train, but it was cool because we got to the same place. I taught some things, and always learned some things. How can people give this a thumbs down? The old guy is the master, and the young guy is future. Any time the two can collaborate, it benefits them both and we get to watch. You can't beat that with a stick! Great video guys!

Been welding for 42 years. Teaching and testing welders now is South Houston. I can agree with what they say and do. There are many different techniques which is very important to learn. I teach my students. Its all about fit, rod angle, heat, arc length depth and travel speed. I teach them to see the puddle. Its like a major league baseball hitter, if you can't see the ball you are not going to hit the ball, see the ball. The puddle tells us what to do. I teach them to not only see the puddle but to hear it and feel it. It is very important to practice welding bad fits within code because mostly when working existing you can get bad fits. You can with a lazy fitter also. You can hear their root going in. it has a distinct sound when it is penetrating and a distinct sound on which polarity it is on. These guys explain what they are doing in a way I really like. Good job guys!!!!

As always, you two teach great together!! It's important to remind or teach people that there are different ways to get it done...
But the basics are all the same!
I love the "one hand" comment Bob... I've always run stick with one hand, but some positions I've had to get in to, to reach... I have used both. Especially the real long distance stuff, when I've actually stuck two sticks together to reach...can't be shaking!!!
Mig,, almost always brace... But do one hand quite a bit too...
    Everyone has their own way!
    Love your videos, as always!!

I prefer to use the whip and pause technique and I always make an 1/8” land, 1/8” gap and 88 amps. All 8’s easy for student to remember. On a 6G I have my arc slightly outrunning my hand and slightly pointed towards the top bevel. I also keep my rod buried, always remember for every 1/8” your rod is off the base metal your machine increase 10 amps.

It made me laugh when you said 'two ways to get to the same place'. It took me back to college with two welding tutors. One would check you welding and say, "Why are you doing it that way?"
Answer, because Dougie showed me like that.
    "No, do it this way..."
Then Dougie would check and ask the same thing.
Answer, because Derek showed me that way.
That was normal life throughout my course :)
But it was good because some things i couldn't 'get' one way but could the other. Maybe that's why they employed them both???

The christmas tree pattern reminds me of what ive always called a whip and pause technigue. Im more or a fan of a steady stringer beads but whatever gets the job done with a sound weld. Nice demonstartion

The way I was taught was that your 6010 root bead better look as good as it would on a flat piece of metal, when I was in school (my instructor and Jody from welding tricks and tips worked together for 7 years back in the day) we had to make it were you couldn’t even tell where your tie ins were, I always ran a 1/8in gap and land at 75 amps then I just whip upwards. I got my certifications when I was 17 year old Junior. Now I don’t get to do all that fun welding since I’m an Union Ironworker

I'm a Canadian red seal welder and fitter .I stopped this video a couple of minutes in because up until I was 28 year's old I always had put my root in like the elderly gentleman.THEN I broke c-1 in my neck,2 vertebrae in my back lost 2 ribs and I could go on and on.I had to learn to walk again, and weld (stick/tig) .I stuck with the fabricating for a year and a half when I got back to work. But I wanted to keep my tickets ,so I talked to an retired welder who shook bad like me .he was an amazing welder but a 50 year alcoholic. hence the shaking.he taught me the tri angle root pattern ,and it I am 58 now and it is still working.I have to make an arm brace for most.but 6 g sch 40 it works.

I enjoy your videos but I am not a professional welder so I struggle with some of the terminology. A tutorial on some of the terms and an example of what that looks like would be great.
    Thanks for sharing your experience.
