      I almost went to the trade school by my house but when I went on the tour I saw alot of red flags. Former students were now teachers, barely any pipe welding and only on sch 40, picture on the walls of former welding students with the jobs they went on to get with very few actually getting welding jobs, and so on. Plus I'm already working as a welder/fabricator, I just wanted to learn how to pipe weld and their program was very skimpy. They didnt even certify their students on pipe which made it seem like they werent confident in their students ability to pass

    This guy reminds me of the older guys back when I started. Back then pipe welding was kind of a secret society, no one wanted to tell you anything, especially about tig. But, if you worked hard and did your job, some of the older guys would teach you because they saw the willingness to put in the work.
    If you had a little slack time they’d hand you some 60 rods and tell you to “ go stack me some dimes”. Practice was the only way to learn , and if you didn’t want to practice when they told you to, they were done with you. That was a looong time ago.

    Thank you and all the others for your videos. I'm learning alot from these and with the esab 161 I just bought, and the scrap pipe from work that I'm bevelling into coupons I'll begin practicing for 6g certs in no time. I'd like to save up a large stock of plate coupons and pipe coupons and once I start I'll start learning through repetition which imo is the best way to learn. You guys are helping alot

    Keeping the key hole uniform and the leading edge of the keyhole uniform in color especially where parent metal and weld metal blend together (tie in). I usually run through my short tacks because I have been caught with cracked tacks (cut out ) . Sound also plays a large part in doing good beads especially when running tight spots

  • @redbird1824
    @redbird1824 4 года назад

    Welders used to say nickel landing nickel gap.That was uphill pipe welding of the 70's.Lincoln Red rod[6010] and 7018.Beginning with the Trans Alaska Pipeline circa 1975 and the invention of high penetration rods like the german cell 80 and its 80XX[8010,8018] series American welding rods.Downhill welding of pipe to ASME or API is now easier and faster.More production,less weld failures,making the life of a pipe welder less stressful. Most downhill welders use stainless strips of sheet metal for gapping tools and a pipe welders wedge .The strips About the thickness of a dime for 6 and 8 inch, less for 4 inch and about the thickness of banding material for three inch or smaller.The root bead is laid in very hot after the pipe is preheated[300] to prevent sticking of the rod and proper stress factors.Usually by a propane weed burner.The rod is literally drug and pushed downhill riding on the flux coat always pointing toward the center of the pipe.Most welders will use 1/8 rod for the bead at minimum 110 amps-120.A good welder will have another rod within quick reach and get back into the puddle while it is still hot.I 've done uphill and downhill and much prefer the fast moving technique of downhill.Downhill eliminates suck in on the bottom due to gravity which is hard to repair and can ruin your weld.

    Remember that the mill scale has a much higher melting point as it has more carbon than the base metal. So make your life easyier and invest your time on complete cleaning techniques to help pass X ray. A preheat can be useful as water expands 1860 times when it turns to steam. Thanks Bob for all your efforts to share the knowledge.

    Great video the only other point you guys did not mention was preventing the key hole at the end of a tack or end of a rod...... one of the biggest problems welders have passing bend test and Visual is to much penetration or lack of fusion at the start and stopping points. If you pull out with out falling back to the center of the tack you leave a key hole that you gotta deal with everytime you start back or come up to during welding . To close the keyhole ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!! Fall back to the center of the tack or at the end of the rod and there will be no key hole to fix you will not have to jack the rod to close the hole ... if you do this you’ll get a “WEDDING BAND” and you will not be able to tell where you stopped and the tacks will look the same as the bead !!!!!!!!! Side bend or root face bends always bust because of bad tie ends if there is no big key hole to close you’ll have better chances at getting pass the eyes of a butthole QC looking for something to bust a guy out for!!!!!!!!! Great video guys you and Abraham and the guy from Canada have the best instructional videos on the web. I’d personally like to see you guys do some videos on how to fix defects like to much penetration or leaving side wall incomplete fusion that would be a big help to a lot of young welders out there !!!!!!!!!

  • @emaisonscom

    Having some knowledge of pipe welding 6G Cert, UK apprentice champion 1980 in MAW, root face is the key, spend the time. You should know your amp settings vs your wrist speed and wrist orintation angle for root bead+ if your ark light is really visible during root run, fail, you have to burn it within the pipe. I would tack at 1/2" feather out to leave 1/4", never start on a tack and always pass the 12-6 o'clock positions, also use a strike plate so your rod is hot also this takes away any flux damage which can occur at rod ends

    So here is the thing. I work as a marine engineer. Onboard the ship we don't have 6010 or 6011 electrodes. So when I am trying to fill the root with 6013 or 7018, at vertical position, it is always destroying the gap. If I reduce amperage, then the bead is worse. How can I work on this?
