Gary was probably the best rival Ash ever had. They had history, they made a perfect rival dynamic (jerkbag and easily angered boy), you wanted to see him lose but he was also hilarious (the TEN BADGES THING), and I like how it progressed throughout the series.
I do love how they got some social skill characters in this show since the main protagonists seem like complete social outcasts with some advice that falls on deaf ears 👂👂 It's nice watching them fix things on that
