can we appreciate Gary's character development in the whole series from being one of the hated rival of ash to besties of ash!

I did find it interesting though for Gary about his character in Journeys now. Gary's personality from Kanto to the end of Johto had his behavior acting with arrogance and antagonistic towards others; but afterwards in his appearances in Chronicles & Sinnoh, he became a lot more polite, respectful, & matured when he became a researcher. But in Journeys it feels like they reset his character back to how he was in season 1 all over again

@@MarcusMapua they didn’t reset his character he’s still views Ash very highly, he was rude towards Goh, but as Prof Oak says he was acting like that to motivate Goh to join Project Mew.
Blastoise vs. Moltres has to be one of my favourite battles from Journeys. Just seeing Blastoise absolutely fling itself all over the place blasting up the Legendary bird was awesome and really shows that a shift in career does not equate to a decrease in power.
I dug it a lot as well, I Just wish Infernape got more spotlight during the battle haah
Blastoise was more of the MVP pokemon of that battle against Moltres, and I feel like that the way the battle was unfolding, Blastoise could have actually defeated Moltres; if only Blastoise had kept Hydro Cannon in its moveset pool and not had replaced it with Water Pulse, which definitely could have defeated Moltres with how it was going and Blastoise was the only one to do more than enough damage on it, more than Electivire, Pikachu, & Infernape.
(Especially even more so than infernape, which we All wanted but sadly did not get and now we can only recount that the latest thing we can remember for infernape is not the last battle it had against Paul, but its performance in its battle against Moltres)

Gary’s Blastoise has always been a beast whenever we’ve seen it. I wish the anime actually showed Gary using its previous evolutions, so it would feel like we’d seen it getting stronger.
I really wish they battled more often

True. Gary often used Nidoking & Arcanine but never Blastoise prior to Johto league

At least he got some nice showing against Magmar :)
Herscross was done super dirty from the beginning of Johto when it was unfairly benched at Oak's till the league for no reason.
It's shame that they didn't give mega evolution to Gary's Blastoise when it made apperance in Journeys. As misty and brock were provided mega a series before, it should have given a Mega.
Would've been awesome to see like how Misty & brock returned with megas
Maybe it’ll return and mega evolve fighting ash’s mega lucario, Pikachu, or ash might even bring back charizard and mega evolve it to fight it again

Blastoise has been my absolute favorite since the OGs came out back in the 90’s when I was in elementary school. I’m 33 now but Blastoise is still my boy 🌊
Another stellar research video, Prof! Even though we don’t see it as much as Charizard, I still think that the final battle between Blastoise and Charizard in the Johto league was a major highlight for me as it’s basically the final showdown between Ash and Gary. Really like how much respect Gary gained for Ash since then….

The funniest thing about all of this is, since Gary’s starter wasn’t canonically revealed yet when they made Pokémon Yellow. So the rival had an Eevee as a starter in that game because of that episode with a battle between Gary and Ash, when Gary used an Eevee vs Ash’s Pikachu.

I think Gary is so lucky for being related to professor Oak, cause he can get a lot of advice and guidance from someone who's very experienced and qualified with Pokemon, he's a professor after all

It seemed to me that they purposely kept Gary's Starter a secret until there could be a showdown with Ash. After all, Blastoise wasn't seen in Gary's battle in Giovanni or the Indigo League because he was never going to compete against Ash directly.
I'm guessing that's why they made up more badges for Gary to win as he was denied the Earth Badge!
Before Eevee debuted, I thought Growlithe was his starter because of the Orange Islands intro
It obviously had to have had more wins and loses than those on screen to make it from Squirtle to Blastoise. In general the writers just didn't give Gary as much significance as they should've.

Do the rest of all of Gary’s Pokémon including his Rotom Phone, Electivire, Krabby, Nidoking (male), Arcanino, Dodrio, Nidoqueen (female), Magmar, Scizor, Golem, and the unseen Pokémon like 👍 Pinsir, Houndoom, Fearow, Alakazam, Skarmory and Kingdra.

Great video proffesor! And btw I am surprised that gary's blastoise didn't learn any Ice move for grass and dragon coverage. Eventhough fairy types take care of dragon types .
Agreed! Ice Beam would've been great. I always taught my Blastoise that in the original games

I always thought it was super strange Blastoise didn't get more spotlight in S1
I honestly think that they weren't really sure how to write Gary as a proper rival for Ash back then, which is why he didn't appear too much back then and would mostly be there to brag about how much better he is than Ash rather than actually battling him to prove himself. It's like they didn't have a plan for how to have Ash interact with Gary, which is why they held off on developing their rivalry until Johto.
@@matthewkuscienko4616 true, i feel like they just went with the flow at the time. After all, they were supposed to complete the anime at some point but when it blew up they changed their minds.
@@ProfessorAlexSilver they couldn't choose which game they wanted to promote more - the one where his starter is eevee or the ones where he gets a normal starter.

One thing I found interesting when I watched the episode where Blastoise appears in the Johto League against Ash. Both Misty and Brock recognize it and comment about being a squirtle and Gary’s strongest Pokémon
Same! I wish they included that line in the Japanese version as well. Would have been cool if Brock confirmed that he fought Gary
I think that was a plot hole because, from what I remember, they met Gary for the first time after Ash had obtained badges from both Brock and Misty. They even got upset and wanted Ash to teach him a lesson because Gary called their gyms "losers" and "wimps".

I must say, Blastoise's battle with Charizard is probably one of my all-time favorites! I loved the intensity of the battle, and it really felt like they were giving it their all! Not to mention showing off its power against Ash's other Pokémon! You're right, I would love to see a rematch!

When i first got Pokémon Blue, when It came out. Blastoise will always be my favorite Pokémon all of time. No matter how many Pokémon games come out.
IIRC Squirtle was my starter as well :)
Also not sure what episode it was when charizard punched blastoise in the face and Blastoise tanks it like a beast. Then Blastoise facial expression, was like you think that is going to take me down?
Also do love in Pokémon Sword was able to get a squirtle and have blastoise in my party and his Gigamax form is sweet. His whole shell, has cannons all over it
Fun fact. In the Manga Red's starter as an official pokemon trainer is an Venosaur making Blue's starter a Charmander

Funny how Blastoise loses against fire/flying types. Though the second one is a legendary and there is no shame on loosing to a legendary. Just the fact that he could blast at Moltres without getting immediately decimated means he is strong.

I think Gary should be a character that wears many hats and roles over the history of the Anime. Rival, Researcher, Gym Leader, Ranger, Champion etc. Pokémon royalty that has a much different journey than Ash but still an accomplished trainer.
Would love to see him as a gym leader some day
Blastoise is underated since Charizard was always poster boy. Wish his in game design had bigger cannons. I agree we needed a buildup with Blastoise into the final battle with Gary vs Ash. We saw a buildup in character development with Sawyer Sceptile, Allain Charizard and Paul Electivire but didn't see Blastoise until the league battle. Perhaps if Gary had Umbreon in that team things would've turned out differently in that league against Ash.
I think Umbreon could have made for a great continued rival to Pikachu. Super strange nothing ever came of them together after their first battle

Based on Gary’s performance in the Indigo league, I doubt he would have had Blastoise at that point. It’s more likely it involved after the indigo league.
I think he got overly confident. It's possible be only had Wartortle, but the fact that he had Nidoking, Golem & Arcanine makes me think he must have evolved his starter as well
This made me realize Gary became a good person. I’m hoping to see Dawn’s Pachirisu I feel like all the sinnoh mon had good growth tbh and it’s funny how she caught it, gave up and caught it again
