And that is what is so fantastic about him. Many of those players see themselves in Paul, just like how a lot of the audience (especially young kids) see them selves in Ash.

Man, gen 4 had it ALL. The great story, literally almost all the battles in this region were fantastic, and most of all the perfect rival being Paul. He was the best one for Ash IMO by pushing each other to each other’s limits and Paul basically proved that in the Pokémon world, not all people are nice and great. He was abusive to his Pokémon and talked down on them a lot but at the end, he came around and finally realized that it’s not all about winning!

If only Sun and Moon was actually good. If I were to compare Ash in each league, Alola is the one he least deserved to win - his team was better back in the Indigo League (until he got thrown some legendaries, *cough* Tobias *cough*) and throughout Alola he was about as dumb as he was in Unova. I mean, he is literally going to primary school for the vast majority of the series.
