I entered the hobby last year with the PL880 and I'm quite happy with it's performance and quality. Although I'd love to own the Tecsun S2000, I can't lay in bed with it like my PL880. Thanks.
I live in the suburbs of a major city, I also found that, yes I know this sounds obvious, that one gets better reception when the antenna has no obstructions between the antenna and the sky. For example if one places the antenna in a bedroom, it is obstructed by walls, ceilings, floors. In some cases depending on how close other buildings are to ones dwelling, the walls, ceiling, floors of the other buildings ALSO obstructs the signal. Imagine placing the antenna at the center of half a sphere and standing next to the antenna, you want a clear view of the sky at every point on that half a sphere. Finally you should place the antenna away from devices that can interfere with it like cell phones, laptops, desktop computers, etc. It may help if you turn off all devices that could interfere.
One of best inexpensive antennas is the following: mla-30 loop fshort antenna (it's easier if you get the mla-30 with a built-in "USB micro a" power plug rather than the one with two bare wires for power supply) You may need: "USB micro a" power adapter And depending on your radio: sma female to 3.5mm ts male Total about $50
For shortwave super newbies in the USA, try tuning into the shortwave time stations from Fort Collins Colorado, a good way to test your antenna setup, amounts of interference etc. 2500 khz = 2.5 Mhz, best reception mostly after sundown 5000 khz = 5Mhz, best reception mostly during or after sundown 10000 khz = 10 Mhz, best reception mostly all day, though it depends. 15000 khz = 15 Mhz, best reception mostly when sun is up. 20000 khz = 20 Mhz, best reception mostly in morning I live in Phoenix AZ, and I can hear the time stations on 5, 10, and 15 Mhz most clearly.

I think Sony and Japan Radio NRD made some pretty good high-endish stuff as well. Radio shack had one or two radios that got you in the door pretty good. Sangean portables were EXCELLENT - for what they were. (I never understood the use of a portable for SWL). SWL just seems to me that it belongs in your radio shack - a room or a side of a room that a wife complains about...a chair for a fat guy to fall out of. There is SO MUCH competition in radios now. I do agree the PL-880 is an Excellent radio, but no mention of the PL-990, or the H-501x from Tecsun. I have/had 2 tecsun radios and they don't hold up which makes me hesitant to get the 880. I had a pl-660 which after about 2 years would randomly start adjusting frequencies after a couple of minutes of being on . The only explanation I could come up with was the microprocessor was failing. I also still have a pl-330 but after a 2 foot fall on carpet the traces for the battery and whip antenna ripped off the board I had to use some bodge wire in order to fix it, but I was disappointed in the pcb quality for the pads to rip off with such little force. I just stick with it since I only paid $30 for it and really don't want to spend more for a cheap digital readout with mw/sw capability. I may as well pull out one of my good ham radios before I'll spend $150 on a Tecsun that may last 2 years.
thanks for your comment, however we have to consider the price since ICOM R9500 costs $13k+ and there very few people who would consider paying that much for a radio. Price is certainly an important factor when deciding how to rank the best radios.
Very few people have $13K to blow on a radio, that's why. At that cost, I don't care if it brings me my breakfast and goes and starts my car on cold mornings.
Save your money. Buy an SDR radio. Eton Grundig Satellit 750 is deaf and signal meter is under callabrated. That my finding of it. I also noticed after 2 years the volume control gave up by not working.
Sorry, but you really do not know what you're talking about. The 750 is OK. The 880 has been superseded at least 2 years ago, by the 990x and H-501x. While the 880 still has some great sound from its speaker, it's improved upon many times by the Tecsun 990x
What we really need is an AM radio that cancels out Mexican radio stations. I have a CC2e. Good radio but AM is ruined by Mexico. Every AM station frequency is overpowered. I'm in AZ to make it worse.
The Kaito is an excellent emergency radio for a variety of reasons. If you live in a hurricane zone it comes highly recommended. A guy told me my 250 dollar Bounty Hunter metal detector was a toy. The next day I found three very nice 14k rings with it. I have a huge radio collection and the Kaito is a favorite. Easy to scan the shortwave band for activity before I even turn on my high quality receivers.
@@baneverything5580 the only ones recommending it are the people selling them. Its just toy. Use a good am-fm- wx band radio that uses d batteries. Lasts for at least a week.
@@RadioRich100 I highly recommend the Sangean PR-D4W for this because it`s 95% equal to the CCrane radios on the AM band and has NOAA weather band. But for fringe areas the FM band is weak, at least on mine. But I have the CCrane EP PRO too. I have an old Radio Shack scanner that was crushed by something (guy gave it to me) that I had to repair and with just a simple piece of speaker wire as an antenna I can hear NOAA stations from all over the place and none of my modern radios can do this. I used a Sony ICF-19 after hurricane Laura 24/7 for two weeks and the batteries were still good afterwards. I had no problem getting daytime AM stations 200+ miles away during the day to get news. Local towers were damaged, no home phone, and no cell service, so AM was all we had. It has a very thick ferrite antenna that I think is 4.75 inches long but it`s a very sensitive AM receiver with 400+ hours battery life. If they would simply put a better ferrite antenna in it and do away with muting on weak nighttime stations they`d have a compeditor with CCrane. My CCrane is the best FM receiver I`ve ever seen. New Orleans FM stations over 170 miles away come in like locals. The Tecsun PL-330 has the ability to be used with external AM antennas though and after I move I plan to set up a 300 ft longwire and try to get some distant daytime stations. I can faintly hear Dallas 820 during the day with a 4 ft inductive loop.
@@RadioRich100 Even without a battery the crank can power up a cell phone. The KA500L can run just fine with no battery at all just using the solar panel. It also functions as an off grid 18650 battery charger when combined with a portable folding solar panel. You know very little about the amazing abilities of this great receiver.
"2000 MHz" battery? Yeah, I definitely trust this guy's opinion on electronics. Slip of the tongue happens. Anyone who knows electronics would catch that either immediately or during post. Sorry.

@@baneverything5580 If it has a crank on it, its a toy.
You didn't review the Sangean ATS 909X-2 or the C.Crane Skywave SSB radios? shame on you!
"2000 MHz" battery? Yeah, I definitely trust this guy's opinion on electronics. Slip of the tongue happens. Anyone who knows electronics would catch that either immediately or during post. Sorry.
did you just say 2000 MHz battery? CC confirms your goof! It's 2000 milliampere hours ding dong
yea we are mistakes and we do humans :)
2000mhz battery 😀
Next time I will add 32 cores CPU haha! What can I say, we are mistakes and we do humans :)

How about the greatest shortwave stations?.They disappeared. Are they coming back?..Then what,s the use of spending money in those shortwaves radios ?

The PL-880, sure, it's a great receiver. Is it Tecsun's best? NO. Is the PL-880 the flagship Tecsun? No. You know what isn't a great receiver? The rest of the bloody list. Did you bother to do any bloody research of any kind in this calendar year?!?
Wow there is still people messing with shortwave radios such ancient and obsolete technology.
Wooow 😃✨👍
The radios aren’t good at all for today. They were good decades ago. Nice try!
I agree. I'm still using a Yaesu FRG7700, and I definitely won't buy any of the ones reviewed.

John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Unless Jesus was into SW radio, you're way off topic.
@@julianhermanubis6800 Jesus had Sony s/w radio !
Why bother then?
@@GerardBoer I think I saw Jesus with an ICF-2010 once...complaining that HCJB didn't broadcast in red letter edition English like He did.
I just got the RETEKESS HR11 radio, it has fm/am/sw/wb digital Bluetooth MP3/Recorder as well. Have you this one at all mate??👍🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘
