A bulging disc pressing a nerve is a separate pathology than decreased foramen size secondary to decreased disc height. She could have one or the other. If her pain is reduced by leaning forward or sitting, it’s likely secondary to DDD, not a bulge

You need MRI and therapy. If you are Murican, yikes to your pocket. I had 11mm protrusion of disc between L5/S1 segments. Sorry been there before, it's terrible😑. I had back surgery for this it worked for about 8 years or so, unfortunately it's back again, just not as bad now.
My life has completely changed from sciatica. My right foot was ripped off in an auto accident and glued back on.. it’s fine till winter comes.. but that foot causes sciatica on the other side of my Body I’m assuming from bad posture. It’s crazy how sciatic pain CRIPPLES me after just 3 hrs on concrete in my Bodyshop, and my bad ankle barely hurts. I’ve tried everything for relief from sciatica and nothing ever helped. Been in unbearable pain for 4 out of 5 past years. Out of work the whole time. Finally figured out that gaining muscle mass and strength is the ONLY thing that can fix it. Been working out since the start of this year after getting strong enough to work out pain free after years of walking and aerobics. Progress has rocketed. Put on 12kg. Legs and back are so strong I can do pistol squats now
interesting read. i stopped lifting 6 years ago after a bad 450lb squat. no damage but never really went back after that. lived a good pain free life and now i feel broken. everything hurts and developed sciatica issues in my left leg. part of me keeps saying just get back in the gym and lift it out will make it all better, think you're right.
@@johnsheridan6452 That's a shame, sorry to hear. Yea do some training. The muscle mass helps prevent the torso's weight from compressing the disks. So if your sciatica issue is a disk bulge and not piriformis syndrome then resistance training would most likely benefit. I'd seek out a physio and they'd want you to get an MRI scan to be sure what the cause is and the best route to take and what exercises to do and not to do while healing. But the key is to find exercises you can do that don't trigger pain. Strength is the only thing the curbs the pain.
I have a lower back hernia. It feels the same as sciatica but the nerve pain was continious and unbearable. I've had different kinds of therapy. None of them actually worked, because they focused on pain relief, and not on core strenght. Then I got a 'TENS' (Transcutane Electric Neuro Stimulator). This helped me off my pain and off the meds (morfine). I still feel it sometimes, but I'm trying to focus on core strenght now but I don't have the motivation to do every excercise everyday. My job involves standing, walking and lifting so I just try to keep my back fine with lifting good and standing straight. I'm only 24 and they found the hernia when I was 18... Nobody believed me when I said the school chairs hurt my back. It wasn't an excuse. It fucked up my back and nobody cared. Too many people have (lower) back pain these days. We're sitting way too much and moving not enough. I would never want a desk-job because I know my hernia will kick in again. Last resort for me would be surgery, but there's risks to that which I'm not willing to take at this age. Nerve pain is the worst pain I can imagine. A kick in the balls is less painfull. There were times I didn't want to live anymore and I was weak from the medication but the pain stayed immense. Worst time of my life.
I feel for you for sure. Having chronic back pain since I was about 9. Not many believed it was as bad as I said bc I still played sports through high school. I am glad to hear the TENS helped you. I am struggling to find much relief, my stamina is very low and my legs are super weak. I’m sorry you have to understand the torment of nerve pain. It’s horrible and I would take multiple kicks in a row if I was promised the pain would go away. I’m 47 and close to needing a wheelchair at this point. Staying mentally strong is a daily struggle.
Yeah I had mine when I was 17 because I was lifting and pulling my snow mobile into the garage. Actually trying to build my back has been helping out surprisingly.
For School I'm sitting at least 6 hours a day, plus 40 mins-1.5 hours of car travel to home, then I eat and do homework sitting, that adds 3-5 hours of sitting. I'm close to being sitting all day, and none of the chairs is ergonomic, they're a nightmare. I had sciatica pain (and still have sometimes), and also more types of back pain (I've never gone to a doctor to see that) but I find relief by decompressing my back by lifting myself and letting my back stretch, but it only helps if I embrace my core muscles, I always try to get my posture right. It sucks that I have to deal with this office life being underage
Hey sorry you had to go through this. I am wondering how you are using the TENs machine? Do you put it around the back area where you have the hernia? I'm experiencing such pains as well and seems like nothing is really working.
I had multiple disc protrusions and I’d say it isn’t that bad of a problem if you’re young . Stay hydrated ( really relieves morning sciatica ) , traction , McGills big 3 helps , stabilise spine ( aka don’t compress it and keep it straight for the most part , use lumbar belt if required )

Sciatica isn’t just a one fix issue. It can stem from numerous things. I had herniated discs in my L4 and L5. I recently had another disc issue and it was my L5/S1. Prolonged sitting can create sciatica as well, with poor posture. Sitting for long times can put wear and tear on your hip flexors. For the men out there, make sure you’re keeping the hip flexors well stretched otherwise it’ll pull on your pelvis and dramatize back pain. Make sure to regularly stretch, lift from the waist up using a straight back and really utilize your thighs in a squat when lifting. Make sure to stand and walk occasionally and not sit too much. Your discs are directly effected by dehydration. So make sure you’re drinking plenty. Avoid stretches that bend the spine if you suspect you’ve got a herniated disc.

I just ordered a back stretcher from Amazon for 30 bucks. I use it at night for about 5-10 minutes as it takes time to get used to. It is supposed to help with releasing the pressure and stretching the back. So far it appears to be helping. I had an awful episode a few months ago and will use this at least 3 to 4 times a week to be on the safe side. This is one of the most unbearable pains to deal with. Good luck to everyone.
I have suffered like this for one year to coincide with the 19 pandemic... swimming, sticking to the wall and other ways. Lastly, I did Bhujangga Yoga or Cobra Yoga pose and within a week there was a change and I didn't feel any pain anymore.
I have sciatica on my right side, but when I extend my left leg I feel the pain on the right side just as much when I try to extend the right leg. I had sciatica few times in my life and never had this problem. I can't extend the legs no matter what not just because of the pain but something is so stiff in my legs that I can't extend the legs past 20 degrees. That's what actually caused my sciatica. I tried to work through that stiffness and it got me sciatica.
What about tailbone pain? I had a pretty bad fall while snowboarding at the beginning of January. Ever since deadlifting and squats have hurt my tailbone too.
Better consult a orthopediatrician, I’m saying this because I sustained a fall from stairs multiple times and got pain in tailbone so much that I couldn’t sit. Visited a doctor, got prescribed a special kind of seat, like there was gap where tailbone lands and after 6 months of recovery I was completely out of pain. This might not be the same case for you but hope it helps you to reach out to a doctor.

I had pain like that in my arm when I tried reaching down for something
Hmm i have this issue thanks
I have suffered like this for one year to coincide with the 19 pandemic... swimming, sticking to the wall and other ways. Lastly, I did Bhujangga Yoga or Cobra Yoga pose and within a week there was a change and I didn't feel any pain anymore.
I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and have been searching for safe exercises for years. Any suggestions?
Thanks to the information
Thanks will try 💜
What if you feel it a day or two later after squats/deadlifts, while walking/putting weight on a leg?
Thank you
Bro sciatic pain is worse when ur overweight…i had to drop some pounds and that made a big difference 💯
I love this
hi my mum has sciatica and I am having her do very gentle wall peels. I notice you are advising against weighted jeffersons is an unloaded rounded lower back safe to do if you have a disk bulge?
So you don't need to train your back to be strong under flexion? Such as doing Jefferson curls?
Nice. 👍
I had this condition or smth similar to it when i had Spondylitis TB and the TB was pushing up against my nerves
This is because the gym teacher in my school never looked after us. I have scoliosis as well so it made me take breaks and he didnt care if i was hurting. I lifted stuff curving my back because he never taught us how
Shall we go for gym again and lift weights once we got relieved from sciatica problem??
What about having one in my neck between or shoulder blades?
