sleeping on your stomach is very bad for you.

    • @mandoky1647
      @mandoky1647 Год назад +27

Put a small pillow under your hip on your side to take pressure off your spine. He failed to mention that. You can even roll up a towel and put it under your shoulder and armpit to relief more pressure. I really encourage if you have sciatic problems is to get a roller or roll up two towels, and place under your lower spine above your butt while laying on the floor. Then put a pillow under your head. Lay in that position for 10-20 minutes. I made my own step on that exercise and went further, and added a heating pad to my roller while my spine was being stretched to help with the discomfort. People don't realize that over time you lose the shape and curve in your spine with bad habits or postures. You have to try and stretch the curve back and work on posture to keep it.

@@mandoky1647 Yeah, I was surprised about this. My sciatica came back with a vengeance and lying on my stomach is a relief right now. Also, doing press-ups and other prone back exercises worked for me before, and for those you're essentially on your stomach. But I'll experiment with side sleeping and resting on my back and see how it goes.

Stress is another factor that exasperates sciatica. I lost my new job due to sciatica a few days ago. It came on when money was stolen from my account and I was stretching. I was feeling great yesterday, did some things around the house, and am in pain today. These hints help as I normally sleep on my side. Will look for a better pillow and just praying to be back to my happy 62 year old self sooner than later!

I've just spent time in Hospital for pain relief but that didn't even help. I'm on strong pain medication and nothing works. I've recently had an updated MRI so the Surgeon can decide whether Surgery can help(do you believe that?). There are a few things the Surgeon can do, one is a Discectomy. The bit that has broken of my Herniated Disc is either bone or tissue which is pinching the Sciatic nerve and causing excruciating pain 24/7, for 3+ years now. The pain only subsides a little bit throughout the day because of medication. But the medication isn't miraculous. The nerve blockers eventually stop working. I've seen a chiropractor twice now. He is afraid to really manipulate my back because of how much pain I'm in. All he does is massage where the sciatic pain is right now. I've been bedridden for 3 weeks now. When I stand up I must use a walker. After about 3 minutes the pain is so unbearable that I must lie down on my side with a pillow between my legs immediately. My quality of life right now sucks. Haven't slept now for 4 overnights due massive sciatica after a over-zealous free weight workout last week. L5 super displaced, pinched nerve, inflamattion, tight muscles, spasms, burning from buttock to toes, you name it. Under Chiro Care now :-) so on the way to recovery. But, I discovered this Dr while scrambling to find that one position to get a couple of hours of sleep. This DR is so reassuring, optimistic, and emits calmness and hope when you start thinking you may just be freakin loosing your mind at 4am. And, the stretches, tips and movements he shows actually realy really help. Everyone here knows and will agree that just 2-3-4 mins of pain relief is like a miracle during these crises. Well, he might have got me 20-25-30 min a night and forever I am grateful for this. FOREVER! Thank you Dr. Rowe.

I was always told by my chiropractor to use ice & never heat. He said heat causes inflammation in the inflamed muscle. I used moist heat one time & it felt good while I used it but when I woke up the muscle was so tight & the pain was awful.
    Thank you for this video.

    • @martyspargur5281

Any athlete will tell you to ice, to reduce inflammation. All my friends say use ice. We've been conditioned to accept that as the solution. But as an ER doctor pointed out about 40 years ago, inflammation is our body's natural defense against attack, and icing my knee before seeing him wasn't necessarily helping me to heal. The opposite of our Go Go Go ignore the consequences conditioning.
So maybe it will get you back in the game, but is that really the best strategy for someone who doesn't need to finish a race or disregard the consequences of pushing yourself even harder?
Every chiropractor I've ever seen always starts the session with 15 minutes or more of lying on a heated massage bed. Moderate doses of heat have helped me when I'm stretching.
Please don't be afraid to try it.

I had severe sciatica due to an L5/S1 left-side herniation in 2011 with a relapse in 2017 (both confirmed by MRI) and both resolved without surgery. I am currently on day 5 of my second relapse, not yet confirmed by MRI, and am again enduring the agony while hoping that conservative (non-surgical) treatment will work this time too. I have learned a lot over these episodes and thank you for the video. I have found that how well I fare each night, especially in terms of not getting into bad positions or making awkward moves in the night, is the biggest single determinant in how able to function I will be the next day. Sleeping badly, or even if I haven't been able to sleep but have been lying badly, can mean getting out of bed unable to walk more than a metre or so without crutches and even then getting from the bedroom to the kitchen is a major expedition. I think this video is so important.
Having said that I have one extra tip. You show the exercise at time index 5:00 where you pull your knees up to your chest. I have another use for this stretch/exercise/position that I find invaluable in bed.
As a side sleeper I find that it can get tedious lying dead straight and motionless for hours on end on the same side so sometimes I feel that I just have to roll over but that rotation of the lower back makes the pain so unbearable that it is impossible to simply roll over in bed the way that most people would do so what I do is, while still on the side that I want to get away from and before trying to roll over I pull my knees up to my chest to go into what I call the "diver's tuck" position, I can then roll over while maintaining that diver's tuck position the whole time, and once I am on my other side I gently come out of the diver's tuck by straightening my legs out again. Before I discovered this trick when I decided I simply could not stand lying in the same position any longer I would literally get out of bed, walk round to the other side of the bed, and get back into the bed lying on my other side.
As a second trick, again for side sleepers, I sometimes find that putting an extra pillow behind me and pressed up tightly against my back can help a tiny bit with the pain. I think maybe it's a bit like white noise i.e. as well as the constant pain coming from my back (no sleeping position is able to stop the pain completely for me) the sensation of the pillow pressing against my back gives some extra nerve inputs into that area for my brain to think about instead of just having the sciatic pain inputs to process. I confess that this one doesn't by any means remove the pain but it does reduce it just a tiny bit.

Thank you so very much for the information. I have a ruptured disc at L5-S1 and 4 bulging disc's directly above L5. I have a lot of issues with my sciatic nerve and radiating aches through my low back/hips area.
I have been dealing with low back issues (bulging disc & degenerative disc disease) since 1996. It was tolerable until the end of 2011 when I overextended my back and began having issues with my sciatic nerve. Early this year while bending over to pick up a jug of water, my back popped, then my legs literally came out from underneath me and down I went. The pain was so extremely severe and something I'd never experienced. I found out I herniated between L5-S1 plus my sciatic nerve was being pinched.
I've been to my primary care physician, to an orthopedic surgeon, to two specialists, to a chiropractor, and a massage therapist, and have told each of them the issues I've had with sleeping, not being able to find a position, however not one of them have informed me of what you have in this video. So, I wanted to thank you so very much for this information. I've not been able to sleep more than 2 hours at a time, so am looking so forward to trying the positions suggested in order to get a more restful night's sleep.

I have been having horrible lower back pain over the last few weeks. It starts in my right buttocks and goes down the back of my right leg. Well this morning it took me a full 20 min to get out of bed. I had the worst shooting pain I’ve ever felt in my whole life. Managed to make it downstairs and tried to sit. Sitting hurt, standing hurt, laying hurt. Excruciating pain. My whole right leg and foot went completely numb. I was so scared, never experiencing this before, and my poor 13 year old daughter freaked out and called 911. Paramedics came and told me it was sciatica pain. Made it into a chiropractor today, got some shots in the area and some xrays. Go back in tomorrow for results and treatment plan. I’m worried about sleeping tonight, but will follow the tips in this video.

My chiropractor treated mine amazingly well with symptoms disappearing after a year of solid chronic pain. The regimen was:
Wobble chair to losen my back up before adjustment.
Neck stretcher thing (I can’t recall what it was, but it was a strap that would hang on the wall, and with gentle pressure , relaxes the neck prior to adjustment)
    Actual adjustment
Then I’d pop on the vibrating platform for ten minutes. It had different speed settings that would change every minute on a Timed cycle.
Within two adjustments the pain was GONE!!!!
I wanted to cry holy hell I was so relived. I swear by the vibe platform. I bought one for my
Home, and when sciatica pains creep now (12 years later), I loosen my back with heat and excersizes, and hop on the platform for the ten min! Works every time!!!

I must say that people dealing with sciatica while sleeping figure out themselves on what is the best way to sleep or get up. What you recommended is spot on but I already knew them cause I suffer from it. But the exercises mentioned helped a great deal in improving sleep. Thank you.

I have L4L5 spondilolysis and spondilolisthesis, three flare-ups in my life, last one two weeks ago. It is debilitating and an understatement saying how painful it is. I find this doctor’s recommendations no non-sense, will follow them until I receive the proper care while switching medical networks. God bless!

Assuming you go to work early morning, you need to wake up early for stretches. Guys guess what!...My lumbar disc herniation lasted long..I tried all exercise but none could relieve the pain..I had massages and acupuncture but none could work until I have decided to decompress the backbone...The first day I did this for few seconds, my pain disappeared and my right leg feel normal...I kept the decompression everyday and doing dead hang on monkeybars and I'm very OK now...All nerve pains and nerve hooks from my waist through my thigh through my calf to my foot all disappeared fastest now I walk normal and do exercise I used to do. Just less than a week. All pains subsided greatly no fears any more.
My advice to you all, if you have any form of sciatica, herniation, etc.... Suspend all activities and start decompressing the back bones with mountains of pillows, monkeybars, dead hangs, handing between tables, chairs etc with your legs up...Will cause the bulging disc to retract back to position and regrow and form normal shape...Do not rush to start any silly activities, keep on decompressing every morning and evening for a year for the disc to heal very very well then you reorganize your life.. I'm on course to full recovery now..Thank you Jesus for healing me...

This is so true. Literally the only thing that brought me some type of relief. I have a pull-up bar at home. So I just hung from it (feet on the ground) as limp as possible and relaxed. After 2-4 20 second sets I actually felt the discs pop back into place.

I've had intense pain for over a year, and only yesterday did someone suggest it may be sciatica. After researching it, that's seems to be the case. Due to my financial situation (and my families attitude towards doctors/hospitals) I never got it checked out. Hopefully, after a couple weeks of doing the recommended exercises and sleeping positions, it'll start to get better. However, if it doesn't start to ease up soon, I'll definitely be seeking professional medical help. Your video is extremely helpful and informative, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

Hi Doc, don’t know if you’ll see this after all these years but I want to try. I live alone a continent away from any family. I wound up with COVID and stayed in bed most of the day for almost a week followed by another very stationary week of recovery (and it was a light case due to vaccination!) All that time spent stationary due to illness locked my lower back - both sides of the SI joints, sciatic nerve pain radiating down both legs, tight hips. I couldn’t rotate, struggled to make it out of bed a bit like a flipped turtle, and could barely walk for two days straight. I’m just over 30 and this is highly unusual for me. Your video has me mobile again and feeling so much better now I’ve caught up on sleep. Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for this excellent video. Mad respect from South Africa 🇿🇦.

Thank you Doctor, some great points!
Mine has come back, was without it for couple of years after an injury causing a lower Disc Herniation. To complicate matters, I also have a side strain pain most mornings, I think from by mattress possibly. Moving one way causes the sciatica pain and the other way can lead to more stress on the side strain.
I do wake up and get out of bed the correct way, but I think doing the stretches before I get out is absolutely golden advice.

I'm 29 but have had sciatica for years. Those who are suffering, those sleep positions are really effective especially sleeping with the pillow under the leg or between the knees. Also a heating pad does wonders. It does more than any muscle relaxer or OTC meds I've ever taken

    • @xxsipanxx
      @xxsipanxx 3 года назад

It's incredible what that electric heating pad does. When I was young and couldn't yet take medicine for my headaches, my parents would put this heating pad on my head until it got better. It took longer but it was much safer. I hope we both find a permanent fix to this back pain nonsense.
