Because I love this series so much, here’s my long ass theory/story based on everything I can remember of the games prior to Paradise (spoilers ahead for everything except Paradise):
Aldous and William Vanderboom create the elixir of life. Only Aldous wins eternal life, William dies. Aldous, now as Mr. Crow works together with Mr. Owl to create Rusty Lake (metaphorically done by the seed given to James).
James' side of the family (the ones related to William) are sacrificed to reincarnate William into Laura. Laura however has depression and commits suicide. Harvey the parrot is a messenger for Rusty Lake Hotel (taking the guise as a mental health clinic), who informs the hotel of Laura’s passing so they can collect her body.
Aldous lives on and starts his own family: the Vandmeers (changed his name to erase any leads to his connection to William’s death), later having a grandson, Dale Vandermeer. Aldous’ signs of aging reveal that the elixir only lengthens a lifespan, not fully immortalize it. Aldous and Dale’s parents are then killed by Mr. Rabbit, a patient of Rusty Lake Hotel who wanted to change his fate (not sure if he knew Aldous). Dale grows up to become a detective for Laura’s case, not knowing they are related. Dale then gets mixed up in the cube/shadow ordeal and gets trapped inside Rusty Lake.
Rusty Lake is a factory: guests enter with the intent to die so their memories turn into black cubes. These guests can interact with the cubes to give them the chance to change their past for the better (like Mr. Rabbit), ultimately creating white cubes. Failure to change fate causes the victim to become a shadow. Only two guests are able to (kinda) succeed: Laura and Dale. In Seasons, Laura can make her life better before her suicide. In Birthday, Dale saves his family, including Aldous.
By paradoxically saving Aldous, Aldous can now use Rusty Lake Hotel the way it was intended: reincarnate William again by collecting the final family members’ cubes/memories as sacrifice. Laura and Dale-original Vanderboom family members who were successful in creating black and white cubes (aka change their past)-are used to create the Golden Cube, the final item (I assume) for reincarnation. Laura however remains a shadow because she already died. Dale, who technically is still alive, takes the Cube and “escapes”.
Dale will either succumb to a shadow or reincarnate into Mr. Owl. If Dale becomes/is Mr. Owl, he causes the Rusty Lake story to become a time loop-he begins Rusty Lake, becomes the final product of Rusty Lake and continues the saga of Rusty Lake because it contains Dale's (and every other character's) original timeline.
...I spent way too much time on this haha.

Hey, for a bit of explanation on the story:
The blue cube allows you to go back in time. It's what allowed Dale to go back in time and save his family in Cube Escape: Birthday.
The golden cube was explained in the book as not only being the key to the past, but also to the future. This could imply either time traveling to the future, as a counterpart to the blue cube (much like how the black and white cubes are counterparts), or it could have something to do with the "full elixer" that Mr. Owl mentioned.
Mr. Owl and Mr. Crow took elixers of eternal life or death, but the problem is that it's temporary. According to the six stages of the wheel (seen in this game and Cube Escape: The Theatre), Mr. Crow (and presumably Mr. Owl) are demigods. This seems to mean that although the two are immortal while under the effects of the elixer, the elixer can wear off over time, as we see in this game. This "full elixer" is presumably the key to true immortality with no catches whatsoever, and finding this elixer could be the reason why Mr. Crow and Mr. Owl kill people for their memories.
However, (no spoilers but be cautious if you wanna go into Paradise fully blind) Rusty Lake: Paradise offers more light onto why certain people are doing certain things at Rusty Lake. Do not expect it to continue the mystery with Dale but instead offer more backstory on a very major and mysterious character so far.
I gotta say, I really love this series and I'll be eagerly waiting to watch you play Rusty Lake: Paradise and Cube Escape: Paradox when that comes out! (Paradox is the next cube escape currently in development. It's also being developed alongside a short film, and I'd love to hear your reaction to that when it comes out!)

Mia Bright I agree with a lot of this and I also think that Caroline’s memories are for the full elixir and the elixir that Mr.Crow and Mr.Owl take in this game is like a sustaining think keeping them immortal till the full elixir is made

    • @nahaiatours
      @nahaiatours 2 месяца назад

And the elixir fully works on animals (the dog is immortal and it's the extraction via the excrement that provides the elixir here), perhaps that's why they turn into animals. Further spoilers: we learn from Paradox that Mr Owl will become a fish in the end, I wonder if Mr Crow also turns into another animal or just becomes a crow. Oh and Harvey must turn into a regular parrot, because on the extra scene in Birthday we see them transforming from the human-parrot into a parrot (did Harvey... Just... Died? And permanently turned into a parrot for eternity?)
This game is just too good

idk if anyone's pointed this out yet, but I'm pretty sure their surnames are of significance too - Vanderboom is dutch for "Of the Tree" and Vandermeer is "Of the Lake"....... Though both surnames would usually be written as separate words - Van der Boom and Van der Meer, if they were in the original dutch - I assume they're immigrants to america who changed the spelling of their names.

As I understand it, your job in this game (as Mr. Crow) is to create a new type of Cube. The previous games had introduced three other types of Cubes: White Cubes, which contain good memories; Black Cubes, which contain bad memories; and Blue Cubes, which have the power to alter the past. By extracting memories from both Dale and Laura('s corpse), Mr. Crow created a new type of cube: a Golden Cube, which according to the book from the cave has the power to change the future. This somehow ties into Mr. Crow and Mr. Owl's endgame, which involves creating an "improved" version of the elixir which grants them immortality.
It's worth noting that the developers have one further game planned in the _Cube Escape_ / _Rusty Lake_ series planned: "Cube Escape: Paradox". The game is being developed alongside a short film, simply titled "Paradox"; the film will be live-action and will feature various clues on how to solve the puzzles within the game.

EDIT: Also we know she was depressed (she took prozac and her letter to Bob suggests it as well) so that's another reason she might've killed herself.

Mr. Owl and Mr.Crow developed a imortality elixir, in which you can either die or turn immortal (don't know the reason why).
But this elixir is not the perfect version of the elixir (they had to make another to keep living).
I still don't know why, but Dale and Laura are important to achieve the full elixir. I think Laura's part is to have her memories harvested and Dale's job is deliver them somewhere or to someone.
Maybe the memories are important ingredients to the elixir.

  • @KOU-ZAI
    @KOU-ZAI 6 лет назад +1

Okay. I'll throw in my guess.
Back in the cave, you had that puzzle where a dude in a hard hat diving suit was helping Dale out to cross the abyss and into the white cube. That means, during that time when your character was collecting those various cubes underwater, it was simultaneously helping Dale cross to that said cube. By the time you entered, he was already seated in with Laura. Since Dale have the ability to change things, they used this contraption to take advantage of his ability and extract what may be a rare elixir (or memory that comprises all of William's family tree) into a golden cube. What exactly does it do? With all the sacrifices offered to achieve a rebirth, it could be a curse or a blessing that serves a higher purpose. I'm sure it'll be further explained in the last game, where it'll bring full closure. All we do remember is seeing Dale on the ground after, Mr Owl conducting some kind of ritual, and that white light escaping the man's body (from The Mill). [P.S.: Don't forget 06:45]
Welp, I'll be keeping an eye for that last one, but in the meantime, thanks for playing thru these games. I've enjoyed watchin' it immensely.

Blue cube: Key to modify your past
Golden cube: Key to shape your future based on modification of the past
By the way, I think modification with Blue cube does not have any real effect, it's just kind of self satisfactory and getting over with bad memories. But Golden cube probably really effect real world.

My man, I would love to hand you some input about this series but it is extremely twisted into its self, which is obviously the key charm to it. You're portraying it really well and fans like my self appreciate it. This is all well edited and a very interesting, looking forward to the future vids'

Hey John!! Thank you so much for playing the Rust Lake series. :3 Love it!
Just wanted you to know that the dog is from Rusty Lake Roots, it's the dog that drank the elixir in the first chapter and gained eternal life. : ) Didn't know if you caught it, but I just wanted to point it out for the references.
    Keep up the awesome work!!

I think you got it spot on, actually. As much as I adore Twin Peaks (Which is odd cause boy can I not stand the camera work in any Lynchian thing I watch) I feel like this game is telling exactly what TP was trying to tell-- just better. It's combining that weird, complicated, convoluted storytelling with in depth plot. Lynch does that well except he does everything to an extreme and then we find ourselves staring at a wall in Laura Palmer's mom's house for 4 full minutes and you question why you're watching it to begin with.

Hey John, really glad you found these games; the Cube Escape series is one of my favourites, so it’s been great watching you play them and discover the story as well :) Not sure if you’d be interested or not, but there’s actually a precursor to the Cube Escape series called Samsara Room, which I think was made by only one of the devs and is more of a concept for the overall series so it’s quite short (you could probably finish it in about 15-20mins) and not as fleshed out as the games in the main series. It was one of the first games from the devs I played and how I discovered the others, so it’s been interesting to see how they have expanded on the original concept. The title itself kinda gives away the idea of what the all the games have been about which is: rebirth/reincarnation. I think that might be what the cubes are about, as if you relate it back to the idea of Samsara, and take some of the quotes from the series e.g. ‘balance the substance of your past lives’ I think maybe the goal of the Vanderboom’s was to achieve enlightenment and/or escape the cycle of life which could be what the golden cube represents. That’s my theory anyway. Aside from that, just wanted to say: keep up the good work- I really love your videos!

Hey John! Who knows if anyone's mentioned it, but if I recall correctly in the early games, blue cubes were established for time travel! It is kind of funny that by a complete fluke one of the family members managed to make a perfect immorality potion. Though I am sure the actual explanation is that the potion is somehow far more effective on dogs. Or... Probably more likely it has to do with the wheel and because the dog is on the bottom... essentially it lowers the dog's score so low he essentially maxes out and becomes super immortal.

23:40 Just when you think you were done; you in sil... submarine son! Honestly, my brain clocked out around here. There's a lot more puzzles crammed into this than the others I feel. Thank you for playing these and future ones even with your busyness.
I think the golden cube is like life essence. Part of the final elixir or whatever. I still don't know why they essentially tortured like 4 generations and others for rebirth. If the whole bit is simply for immortality it seems silly.
And off chance this is read... continuing xcom or trying out the new dd expansion (apparently its not all endless mode).
