"As I understand it, you can play this game after Rusty lake... but you can also play it slightly before." As long as you play it slightly before, or slightly after, but not WAY before. And lord help you if you try to play it at the same time.
These were meant to be played before Hotel, since that was the release date; everything in Hotel was added to the lore after The Mill. And I can't imagine they'd be too hard to play at the same time, since they're just point and click games. Maybe not the Cabin section of Case 23, but these two games are intended to occur at the same time, so playing them together is quite feasible!
Just a heads up, after you play Cube Escape Birthday and Theater, you should play Rusty Lake: Roots, then play Cube Escape: The Cave, and then finally Rusty Lake: Paradise (the way the developers recommend playing it). P.S. The secret code you got in Rusty Lake: Hotel can be used in Cube Escape Birthday (it doesn't give you a different ending (like Cube Escape The Lake) it just gives you a little something special ;) )
This series of games is absolutely intriguing. I never know what to expect! And your genuine happiness and excitement in playing it adds to the fun of the video.
You should rip the photo of Mr. Crow and his Wife. Its about Dale and his purpose. Also get ready with that code in Hotel it will be used in Birthday. Also theater has a secret called "Bad Egg".
Great to see you again John! Funny you mentioned Twin Peaks - I've been watching it when you don't post new vids (definitely not getting on ya for not updating - life happens). Really enjoying it so far Agent Cooper is so zany.
I JUST started watching Twin Peaks! It's been on "my list" but since you started playing the Rusty Lake/Cube Escape series a couple weeks ago, I subconsciously started it. Thanks, John.
My grand parents had a phone like that and I loved it. It felt really satisfying to dial the numbers. Btw John you are amazing at puzzle solving. Keep up the great work. :D
I was actually a Librarian for several years, and there was a rotary phone in the "breakroom" of the library. They actually gave me the rotary phone as a gift when i left.
My house still has a rotary phone stuck to the wall. Of course it doesn't work because we had our landline disconnected several years ago, but it remains as an artistic fixture in our kitchen area.
John! If you enjoyed the Rusty Lake games, you would **love** the Submachine games! It has the same atmosphere as the Cube Escape games and it's got such a good story to it, too!
omg, "Harvey!! Heyy.....*thousand yard stare*" even though I've seen most/played some, I still enjoy these playthroughs. Thanks for the plays and edits.
Yeah, I know. But this is also a game where stag beetles have keys inside them and corpses unleash hordes of flies out of their mouth that rearrange into a safe code lol
😂😂Was falling asleep during this vid (not cause it was boring just tired) and I woke up to see John playing with the utters and saying 'I don't understand why they're acting like that' 😂 idk why that cracked me up so much
My theories so far. The black humanoid figures are those who were harvested. At the end of mom, the future is the detective. After he put the cubes in he said he saw his memories floating in the lake then we saw mr owl with him. I think we actually are mr Crow in the mill, that's why he said to the figure that they were already harvested. Don't know who the shadow with the horns is. But you're right about the cubes being memories. I'm not sure about Harvey's role but maybe he killed the guests at the hotel for mr owl because with memories it was shown you could change your past. He wants the woman to come back to life perhaps. And maybe the horned shadow dude is the killer then?
Dark Static I thought horny dude was Mr. Deer from Hotel, since iirc he shows up in the forest with all of the shadow folk of the other critters. Might be wrong though.
So excited for you to get to birthday...it was my personal favorite out of cube escape. Great video as always! Just wanted to say, thank you SO MUCH for playing this series. I love it! Also, spoiler, the next game, Cube Escape: Birthday is all about Dale Vandermeer.
Case 23 is the hardest cube escape game for me but I find it really fun except for the last chapter because I'm slower than a turtle XD😂 cube escape the mill is extremely easy for me:)
Hey john! There's also a game made by the Rusty Lake devs that was way before the cube escape series, but still has the same style. It's called Samsara Room and its a trip and a half.
john clicks on the wall where the black dot is, wall crumbles, john: "i guess its just random?" watches john click ar0und the black dots that pop up lol

The corrupted human from the earlier games was the woman. She was trying to remember herself. She died, I think from that green pill, or from being murdered from a corrupted human, and the crow collected her body for the lake. The crow takes dead people, their good memories (white) and bad memories (black). But if you extract bad memories, you can corrupt the body, which is why the woman became black. The corrupt become killing machines, desperately seeking their lost memories that they can never have back, only fragments. This is just my interpretation. I have no idea what the owl did to the detective, though.
jade smith I think Mr. Owl was trying to corrupt Dale's good memories (like in the birthday episode in which he sends him a gift, his family murdered and dale has to find a way to reverse it) and turn them into bad ones so he would join them, in their killings I assume?
If you write CROW into the typewriter at the end of doing the typewriter thing zou get an achievment "dark wings". I discovered it bc in the newspaper in chapter 1 there is an add for a typewriter and there is CROW written on it.
Case 23/The Mill @ 35.52 mins - When you are breaking down the wall, look for the little black glowing 'motes'. That's telling you what spot to click next to knock out wall sections
My guess is the lake is named such as it's probably a frequent spot for red tide ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_tide ) where the waters take on a red brown (rusty) color due to algae. Shrimp is a frequent animal featured in the game which makes sense as shrimps are one of the type of edible foods in red tide waters as the toxins from the algae are not absorbed into their edible tissues
