Well, I suppose Mr. Owl saw the potential in Dale to be able to change the past (able to turn bad memories into good, in terms of showing a black cube turn into white), and that's why he deems him a threat even at the age of 9. Perhaps that's the reason why the child was spared after Mr. Rabbit paid his family a visit. To test if he truly has that gift.
If you’d seen the secret message in Mill, you’d understand a little more of Mr. Owl’s intentions with Dale.
The man at the bar (Bob) knows you’re a detective because he was the main suspect of The Woman’s murder. He was in the witness cell in Case 23. You saw him become a corrupted soul there, too.

Better than my excuse. I'm just a wuss when I'm in control and don't play well under pressure. But I can solve all of the puzzles. It's why my friends keep me around for Silent Hill and Resident Evil playthroughs.

I think all the premium games have their place, both as games and in terms of their place in the narrative. I think Hotel really did and continues to introduce a lot of people to the series. It's a good entry point and an enjoyable game, but for me it has the least replay value of any of the CE/RL games.
Roots definitely does present the most answers (when in the context of the book shown in Cave--no spoilers for those who haven't seen). I think it is the richest story game. That final puzzle is unreasonably hard, and I think it bit off a tad bit more than it could chew, but it presents a spectacular story and some truly interesting characters.
I think Paradise is the best overall. it simplifies compared to Roots. It returns to the esoteric weirdness of the pre-Roots Cube Escape games that I think the developers lost a bit of after Roots' popularity. I love Cave, but it definitely has a marked decrease in Twin Peaks feel. That definitely made a return in droves in Paradise.
Paradise gave a good balance of answers and questions. Puzzles that were hard but not insoluble. Good characters. Enjoyable as a standalone and as part of the whole.

Rewatching this series after having finished watching almost the entirety of Twin Peaks, and holy cow, the sheer amount of references I didn't pick up on before is kind of mind blowing.
PLEASE don't skip the extra level in Roots. It'll give you some very important information
That wasn't the rabbit you killed in Hotel, but I think it was the one in the window in Hotel.

The witty magician brown rabbit gets murdered, but rather than fully turning into a corrupted soul like the others did, as his one last trick he became the hooded, empty-eyed white rabbit, and retained some agency rather than just sinking down and dwelling on the lake bed like the others. You can see him in his tank at the end of Hotel, the same way he looked outside the window (which must have been foreshadowing somehow). Then in Birthday, he claimed he was trying to "escape this state," which must have meant he was trying to resurrect or restore himself. David's lines in Paradise are pretty consistent with pre-murder Mr. Rabbit's demeanor as well.

Rusty Lake Hotel came out between; The Mill and Birthday... I checked the "Rusty Lake Wiki" before watching the series, to make sure I was watching it in the right order. You have them posted in the right order, except for the second and third video are reversed. *;-)*

You're absolutely right about the ordering. I don't know where that ordering everyone was giving you came from, but Case 23 and The Mill were released before Hotel, and Birthday was released afterward. It just makes a lot more sense with the exposition to play them in that order, plus the introduction of original soundtracks and voice acting starting in Hotel.
I think the ordering was given because Hotel sets up what happened to everybody, such as Mr. Rabbit becoming the white Rabbit and why he was going after Dale?

Ohhhh yessss, been waiting eagerly for more Cube Escape! I love seeing John play point-and-click adventure games. Thanks as always for the great content!
They recommended playing Case 23 & The Mill after Hotel because the first post in the Reddit thread said that the last scene of Hotel was a foreshadowing of Dale in Case 23.
But Hotel technically was released after Case 23 & The Mill. Other Reddit lore masters (& I) agree that the order should be Seasons, Lake, Arles, Harvey's box, Case 23, The Mill, then Hotel, Birthday, Theater, Roots, The Cave, & finally Paradise. Of course, _Samsara Room_ technically should have been the first game played because it was the precursor to all the other games & started the whole rebirth/reincarnation theme. I've been & remain a forever fan of the Rusty Lake developers. :)
What I understood from the snowglobe using the hotel secret code is that you played as Harvey in hotel, and what I think happened is that after killing the animals in hotel Mr. Owl took their memories, turning them into corrupted souls, that he captured and kept in the glass tubes. Upon seeing Harvey enter the room, they escaped from the tube seeking revenge which caused Harvey to become a regular bird (or she became a regular bird to escape them).
Hi John. Not sure if someone mentioned this in the comments already, but in one of the smaller games you've played (I can't remember the correct one right now), theres a letter you acquire from Mr. Crow to Mr. Owl, saying he will be sending him someone that might be able to fix the problems the lake has been having. So, we basically know this person is Dale, because he's neither alive nor dead; his memories are now the lake's but he's not a corrupted soul (maybe because he has no bad memories: he changed his past in birthday. maybe he was 'groomed' from the start). If the corrupted souls of that man and woman are what's causing the problems (whatever the heckie they are), then he's being sent there to correct them by solving the case, maybe? Since he's a detective....................... Idk that last part was a reach lol. but yeah, that piece of info aka the letter was pretty important and I've had in the back of my mind for some time. also because I haven't played past the smaller games so I'm eager to see more.

This is one of my favorite series you're playing! I watched Sinow play Roots a while back with no context of hotel or any other games so I was confused about the style and gameplay but it still was intriguing. I love this strange other dimension macabre storyline. I'm sure Roots will make more sense now (well, as much sense as a screwdriver being vomited up from a drunk man's mouth) when I watch your play through of it.

You needed the R.L Hotel "secret" code for The Mill dude. That is why I recommended it that way. Hell I don't know. I think those 3 games are MOSTLY interchangeable but I would not play The Mill before Hotel. Just me.
The code in hotel is for birthday.
The one you need in mill if any is even needed will be from seasons
You really have to play Rusty Lake : Roots, most of the things will be clear to you since then, that game explains a lot :)
Fan theory: in order for dale to escape the paradox, he had to go back and kill his family. Dressed like a rabbit so his parents wouldn't have to see him like that and the true escape was getting shot by his grandfather (who kinda looked like mr crow). So in a sense, once the lake has your "memories", there truly is no escape..only death.

You should play Rusty Lake: Roots, it explains nearly everything (what started these events, why is Harvey still alive, what caused corrupted souls etc etc..)

Hey John, if you are looking for a game to play, i suggest 21 rooms. I had a fun time discovering the game mechanics and im sure people would enjoy watching you do that too.
adding an occult perspective here regarding the end: a lot of occultism is dedicated to "shadow work" (coined by jung) which is about confronting and learning to understand the darkest parts of yourself. the idea being that you are a miniature image of the universe (as above so below) and in understanding and controlling yourself, so to can you begin to understand and control the universe. what owl said at the end about reaching a higher consciousness through examination of past mistakes perfectly aligns with this idea. thought it was interesting to note.

Kali Takumi Kali Takumi well, it's not even hindi to be honest, the alphabets are sanskrit (hindi took up all the alphabets from sanskrit), but yeah, they do share a lot of vocabulary..I mean around 48.59, all the words are in hindi/sanskrit..so.. we already got pret and narak, which is ghost and hell respectively, the rest are dev (god), manush (man or human), asur (monster) and finally there's tiryagyoni (womb)..☺️

Or it could be that Dale was meant to be the successor of the Rusty Lake (I saw this somewhere that Vandermeer in Dutch means 'of the lake') Maybe he is related to the Vanderbooms.

But, in birthday, the rabbit had clothing that looked a LOT like the character's that you currently play as in Birthday, and the note that the Rabbit left DID say something about previous lives... Maybe the character you're currently play as WAS one of the previous lives of the Rabbit?

I was sort of thinking that too, like after he "fixed" the memory and became corrupted or something bad happened he had to go back and make it a bad memory again? That might be too meta, though, my head hurts
I was playing Rusty Lake Hotel and got stuck so I looked up a youtube video for a walkthrough. Found your video and ended up watching the whole thing. Then ended up binging this entire series. Great videos and very interesting games

YES! MORE CUBE ESCAPE. I wasn't sure about rusty lake hotel in of itself. It seemed like a lot of "weird for the sake of weird" but with the other cube games there is a mystery brewing and I want to know more.
HEY JOHN, EXTREMELY HELPFUL TIP FOR THE CAVE HERE: You probably already recorded it, but just in case you didn’t: The “key” in the box next to the microscope is actually an unfilled cast for a key. You get something to fill the cast much later on in the game.

You had no idea how accurate this statement really was... especially given the secret Owl Mask ending of Rusty Lake Paradise shows that a vision of Dale and Laura was shown to Caroline and Jakob right before they merged to become Mr. Owl back in 1797-ish.

The mother does say something you have to click in the right spot (she says “Dale, what happened today.”)
First the translations- 22:26 & 39:44 PRET (means phantom); 39:47 NARAKA (means hell) 44:21 ASUR (means demon or demi God) 44:24 TIRYAGYONI (basically means diagonal but in this instance refers to the Animal Realm) 48: 58 -extra words- MANUSA (meaning human) and DEVA (means God). All these are the six domains of the Desire Realm. You see, Buddhism and Āstika schools of Indian philosophies believe in The Wheel Of Life or wheel of Samsara which is the continuous cycle of life, death and rebirth. So you pretty much nailed your explanation at the end! Noice. ^-^
Hey John, I personally recommended playing Hotel before Case 23, because Hotel had a bit of foreshadowing for Case 23's Dale. But you do you! I'm glad to see that you are enjoying this series!
Spooke I know. I was commenting on behalf of my previous comment on the Seasons video, where I recommended a certain order of Cube Escape games.
This game feels so personal, especially to people who are familiar with Hindi, given the fact that its used in it. 'Pret' and 'Narak' written on those pictures in Theatre meant 'spirit' and 'hell'.
Reminds me a lot more of the Black Lodge from Twin Peaks than it does a Greek underworld theme. That just may be my bias, though. I can just see a lot more parallels between these games and the weirdness that goes on in and around the Black Lodge.

The scar near Dale's father's mouth in Birthday looks like Mr Owl's mouth scar in Theatre. But im not sure if its the drawing style of the mouth or whether its a scar.
