Revisiting Goosebumps As An Adult [Part 1]

- Sure, Goosebumps was creepy as a kid, when I didn't know any better. But what about now, with my superior adult intellect?! Let's take this children's horror book series way too seriously and do a deep dive into the first two stories of the series: Welcome to Dead House and Stay out of the Basement.
The first in a series? Possibly? Adult beware, you're in for a scare!

Man, the copies of the books you have are immaculate. Did you buy them recently, from someone who kept them all in amazing condition? Or are they yours from childhood that you kept in amazing shape? Or do they somehow still sell the older style original books?
Wish I still had my childhood Goosebumps books, but those are long gone.
Thanks for noticing! Yes, the Dead House and Basement copies I have are practically unused.
I had a few worn copies of the early books from my childhood, but I was missing a lot of them. So a few years ago, I was on Amazon and saw that someone was selling #1-12 as a package, and they were listed as "New". So I decided to bite.
The dozen of them arrived in plastic wrap and it was like they had been stored away in a moisture-free environment for two decades or something. The pages are all still white with no edge browning or anything, and there are no creases of any kind. From what I can tell, they're legitimate copies of the books too. The Dead House one is 52nd printing and the Basement one is 16th printing according to the info at the front of the book.
Basically, I lucked out in getting these. Whoever the seller was, they took down the listing soon after and the product page is no longer available. I dunno how they had a dozen of these books in almost perfect condition, but they were selling tens of packages of them for a few months at least.
If we get this far in the series, by the time you see book #13, you'll start to see them in much worse condition😆But I do take good care of my books, so they won't be falling apart of anything!
@@JohnWolfe 66K views so fa? How are you rating this video's success so far? Hit? Flop? Somewhere between?
I absolutely loved this video and actually enjoyed how you had some real positive things to say about the first two entries of Goosebumps. Most Goosebumps reviewers go all-in with the Nostalgia Critic-style snark and bashing.
@@ElvenRaptor It has low views at the moment in comparison to other recent videos, but Goosebumps is one of those topics that does well in the long-term. 3 out of my top 5 viewed videos are Goosebumps videos, and they all started as "flops" for the first few weeks/months. I'm not worried about the video's success, there will be a part 2 no matter what. I just may not make 20 more if it doesn't pick up, that's all.
And thanks, after I made this one I watched a couple random reviews of these two books and I noticed the trend you're talking about. I love AVGN but I think that video style has done some irreparable long-term damage to youtube "reviews" and we're still feeling the effects today
I just looked at the views, it's upsetting to me. I know you gotta do what you gotta do, but I personally have enjoyed watching anything you've done so far.
@@JohnWolfe I loved this video style format and review. I think this is a hit and I hope we see a sequel some time in the future
When Amanda said “I used to live in your house,” I always took it as a hint that they may have actually died because this is what all the dead kids said.
I pictured them not getting far in their car because they’d get really hungry and realize they don’t want food they want to eat people, so they’d end up coming back and helping start the town over.
I absolutely love this and hope it becomes a series!
That’s what I thought too!
I just read the book! I definitely agree. I think it’s letting us know that they were once in their house just like them but things didn’t go so well for them
that is a fantastic theory
The flower joke at the end of the book scared the willies out of me as a kid. The existential horror of not ever being able to be sure your dad was really you dad and he wasn't trapped as some poor flower outside was too much for me.
John in his professional book reviewer arc is something I didn’t know I needed
Right??❤
I'm glad hes finally back into the Goosebumps era ever since he reviewed that game lol
And Markiplier is making movies. Sigh. Everyone has gotten too big.
Wayyyy back he did a review of some weird Jeff The Killer fan fiction. Can recommend.

Would 100% love to see you cover the whole series! It’s so interesting going back and seeing what scared us as kids and how it actually looks now.

Editing - 5 funny bones
Reminder that life is disappointing and I am old - 5 spine shivers
Nostalgia - priceless
I do not care if I am an adult. Still I am only 33 but when I am 53 I will still be re watching these Goosebumps episodes. They are part of my childhood. I have a boring office job and do what I gotta do as an adult to keep myself healthy mentally and physically. Watching my childhood tv shows and playing videogames along with my hobbies are part of that. There is a magic in each of these episodes. I imagine myself wearing my coverse shoes (which I still wear), jeans, flower print t shirt, colorful watch, braids and go on a creepy neighborhood to see if something creepy or goosebumps-like might happen. Nothing like watching an episode with candles on in my living room with my siblings. Even my parents still join in sometimes to watch an episode or two. They were well filmed and written.
Not sure if you ever encountered them but Goosebumbs had these "Choose your own scare" choose your own adventure books that were pretty fun.
I specifically remember the "Diary of a Mad Mummy" being good
I remember reading a choose your own adventure one where early on a choice made it so you rode off on a bicycle away from a brother and sister; ending the story right there.
Those were my favourite! I still have the one with the creepy rotting Zombie kids at a campfire on the cover
I remember the choose your scare ones. I had "Escape from the Carnival of Horrors" from that series.
I think I only read one and that was about some kind of theme park. I remember you had choose the path and the rides you rode.
@@bloxyman22 i had that one too!! i may still have it somewhere in a box, but i read it over and over as a kid on car trips, trying to do new combinations and get every ending
John i can't tell you how great this content shift has been
I concur. ❤
Right?
I still love his horror game and triple A horror game walk-throughs. But I like this shift too.
Couldn’t agree more
You can tell he genuinely enjoys it too and it shows in the finished product.
Man, Goosebumps was my childhood. I think my favorites were the Terror Tower, the Haunted Mask one and the camera. I do believe my love for horror games and movies begun with these books.

I was born in 2000 and I practically grew up watching and reading Goosebumps. Funny to see Don't Go Into The Basement again as an adult, it actually scared me as a kid. Strangely enough what scared me the most as a kid was the lady in the billboard changing and the dogs eyes turning evil in the Goosebumps opening theme. I would literally cover my eyes.
Papa meat (meat canyon) has a great commentary video on Stay out of the Basement. Though it is a little peppered with the idea of hitting kids.
Me too❤
i used to think that the lady on the billboard was michael jackson

I have no objections to you making a whole series going over every Goosbumps book! Super fun video, John!
id like fear street too! 🤭
Absolutely agreed. The video was a bunch of fun and I immediately went to see if he had done any more when it was finished.

"And now guess what? Now we're dead in your house!" H U H ? ? ?
lives rent free in my brain
"The first in a series? Possibly? Adult beware, you're in for a scare!' John, you can't tease me like this. I would go to war if you made this a series because I LOVE seeing people looking back at Goosebumps/R.L. Stein in general and react to the weirdness and genuine horror he created!
Oh my gosh, PLEASE keep going! I love seeing creators revisit things from their childhood to see how they hold up! Goosebumps is a great series to dive into and revisit, especially during October! For anyone else who likes this type of content, there's also a channel called Pushing Up Roses, and she goes through Murder, She Wrote episodes. I love it because I always used to watch that show with my grandmother and it's nice to look back and see how silly things are through an adult's perspective when it was something introduced to you in childhood. Can't wait for the next episode! I've got my notifications on! 😄👍
The cover art got alone got me into the books, definitely a cornerstone of my childhood
I love R.L. Stine and think he (and if there were ghost writers) fid a great job on so many fantastic ideas, even if not entirely original, but still crafted memorable threats & creatures......however...
I FIRMLY believe Goosebumps wouldn't have been nearly as popular and longstanding as a book series as it was and still is, if it wasn't for all the fantastic covers the Goosebumps, Give Yourself Goosebumps books had. They absolutely grab your attention, the surreal atmosphere most generate, and esp as. Aside, how eerie or unnerving many could be!
Both were needed to do so well, but I don't think it's out of line to say the covers did a LOT of heavy lifting. The same is said for so many 80s and 90s Horror movie VHS cover art and how they'd grab people's attention while walking the video rental stores (yea yeah old stuff xP).
I grew up in UK and the covers alone kept me from reading for years lol. Look them up, they're yucky
@@hanagara1907 aren't they the weird bubbleed slim covering 3/4s of the book designs? 😅
@@nikkis.2066 yeah, I HATED them! To me, they looked the texture of puke (each book was a dif colour)
@hanagara1907 looked like Tapioca Pudding xD. I guess the UK was like "these covers are TOO scary for kids, which, ruin them!"
My boyfriend was bummed I started watching this without him lol. We're 90s kids and Goosebumps was a big part of our childhoods. We've been really enjoying your non-gaming content and I hope you continue this series! Love the mix of comedy and serious review.
Wish I could find someone to enjoy nostalgia with. Instead I just get cheated on every time.

@@stevefromyellowstone7911 Sorry to hear about that, but please do not compare yourself to others by thinking their relationship on social medias are perfect. I know many couples who post perfect looking photos on social medias and look happy, but one of them cheat or regret having kids so young in their 20s, not enjoying life to the fullest.
As a young teen I was hooked on R.L. Stine's "Fear Street" series, I read every single book in the series and even wrote to R.L. Stine to tell him he was my favorite 🤓
No way! Me too!! My library had then stacked and I always went there multiple times in a day to read them all non stop!!
I was obsessed with the Fear Street Cheerleaders series. I actually still have just one book from when I was a kid. “The Second Evil” :) I’ve always been into scary spooky horror stuff. 🩶🩵
I loved them too! Started with Goosebumps then graduated to Fear Street! I also really loved Christopher Pike's books.
I read an absurd amount of Michigan Chillers
Loved this series! I still have all my books because I couldn’t bear to get rod of them. Same for my Christopher Pike books.
Goosebumps reviews? Hell yes! This is such a fun video format. I'm loving the dad jokes and little skits. Hope you make many more of these c:
I wasn't allowed to watch the goosebumps TV episodes as a kid because they gave me nightmares, so I'm excited to learn how the adaptations measure up to the books!
I love Goosebumps books. Whether it be hearing the show's iconic theme or doing a read of one of the books years ago, this series holds a special place in my heart.
Love what you’re doing with your new videos. The playful memes and jokes is exactly what the channel needs. Keep it up John!
Please, please let this become a series! The writing, the editing, the ITYSL references, everything- it was such a great video
I’m subscribing, liking this video and commenting in hopes that this video gets good metrics and you will continue reviewing this series. Please continue! I’m very invested!
This made me want a Pushing up Roses x John Wolfe collab so bad, I feel your guys styles would much up so well and you both have a lot of knowledge about scary campy horror media. I also love the way you present information in a way that stays entertaining all the way through mixing the little details and jokes perfectly. Whatever you chose to do I’ll be watching because it’s so fun.
I used to be a fan of hers but Im not sure no more. Anyone who used to collab with her no longer does(LGR, PBG, anyone...) and that combined with things I notice about her in her videos and posts that I find very questionable, Id say at best she's probably a hard person to get along and work with.
I feel like a collab with BrutalMoose seems like a better fit. Both John and BrutalMoose have the same dialect, plus similar video styles.
@@jacksonjack7838 They don't collab anymore because Roses has moved her content away from games and more towards tv reviews, I disagree with the sentiment and she and john do follow each other.
@@steveo1131 I love Ian and I agree they could make a fun collab! Even if it's about something like food or a scary movie it would work really well too. For more obscure ideas I think both of them love adventure games so that would be so fun too!!
@@jacksonjack7838Aren’t all those guys gaming channels? That would explain the lack of collabs, considering she doesn’t do gaming anymore.
I am unreasonably excited about this Goosebumps series. John’s booktube era is something I never knew I wanted but now, I need it 🐉
This takes me back to the late 90’s when I started checking these out at my schools library. These books definitely started my passion for the horror genre. Thanks for the video!
It seems like John’s been having so much fun with his new content & I love it 🙌🏼 makes me so happy
He changed 😢

john could make a 4hr long video of him knitting or whatever and id be seated, listening, having the time of my life (loving the variety of vids youre great dude 👍)
Lowkey need a knitting vid now 😅
Now I kinda want to hear John voice over for the characters and being a storyteller for any horror stories while having that scary sound effect. Maybe making some jokes or reviews along the way of the story while reading it, that would actually be awesome!!
Man I'm a 80s kid and I'm all for this, Goosebumps was a fun entry way into Horror stories that I need to listen at night everyday so I can sleep lol.
What are you even doing here then? RUclips is a place where young, vibrant people get to watch free viddies made by other young folks.

The editing and writing of this were SO good. The memes, the laugh track, the jokes, I loved it. The format of reviewing both the books and the TV show was so smart and kept things really interesting. The closet skeletons/funny bones/spine shivers grades were an excellent grading system too! I never watched the show, but as a 90s kid, I loved the books. Two of the books I remember most are Welcome to Dead House and for some reason Beware the Snowman?? I really hope we get to see more of this series!
I'm really digging this change of direction, I love the Goosebumps series and glad to hear you covering them!
Goosebumps is still incredibly charming. Even the bad books are kinda entertaining. I've been slowly picking them up over the years and rereading. I can read one in like an hour and it's pure fun. I wish children's/teen horror was still a thing like it was in the 90s.
I wish parents gave their kids books again instead of iPads
Love hearing a more academic take on old media from your perspective. If we were in a time where we'd read articles as much as listen to video essays, I'd totally read your articles!
I just watched the new Goosebumps show on Hulu, searched Goosebumps on RUclips and found your channel for the first time. I remember reading some of the books in elementary school and was feeling nostalgic so I'm so happy to come across your channel and I hope you do more of these Goosebumps book reviews!
I remember watching the Goosebumps game playthrough and how genuinely excited John seemed when playing it and remembering all the different stories. Goosebumps are legendary and this is a great idea.
23:03 "you really scared me when you played dead" underrated line.
my grandma got me a box of all the original series goosebumps books from a garage sale when i was little because my mom used to read fear street, which i did after. the series has a huge special place in my heart. i read them all so many times and they are my first memory of discovering my love of spooky things
I loved Goosebumps as a kid! Welcome to Dead House scared me so bad that I cried lol. I think it was just the way that the dead people were crowding and cornering the family in the house. I can't stand the feeling of being trapped.
The Night of the Living Dummy series was always my favorite though, especially the third one. The nostalgia is off the charts, love this retrospective!
I really hope this turns into a series! Goosebumps started my love of horror and it's nice to revisit old classics
John I just want you to know I LOVE these non game related videos so very much. You can really tell just how much work goes into these, thanks for what you do!! ❤
Loving this as a possible new series, and as you asked for new names for the rating systems, have you considered references to the books themselves? Shockers (from "A Shocker on Shock Street") for either the scares or shocking twists? Camp Nightmares or Phantoms for scares? Slappy's for laughs? Just a few ideas... keep up the great work!
Because of this video I ended up taking out goosebumps books from the library, as a fully grown adult.
Thanks for bringing back memories man, loved the video!
I legitimately NEVER comment on videos for anyone of any kind, but I can't possibly overstate how incredibly excited I am that this is going to be a series---This was such a fun watch and as someone that only read a couple of the books but had AAAAAAAAALL of the DVD's growing up (every time we went to walmart and i saw a new 'goosebumps' dvd, my parents would get it for me so i have most if not all of them now!!!), I love hearing about how the medium for these stories compare to one another and knowing that you had an adoration for this series as well is something that's.....heartwarming? That's absolutely not the word I want but I can't think of a better one rn----ANYWAY. SOOOO super stoked over this becoming a series and I can't wait for the next one! Been LOVING the non-gaming stuff on the channel and I'm glad you seem to truly be having fun with the content you're making---It really shows in the quality, my dude!! I hope this series really takes off for ya!!!!
Have you watched his Childhood Cringe videos? Where he reads his own Goosebumps inspired stories that he wrote as a child. Its super hilarious. I wish he would continue that series.
i like how the tagline for Welcome to Dead House is "it will just kill you". very to the point
My favorite was The Curse of Camp Cold Lake. I re-read that one SO. MANY. TIMES. So sad that book didn't get it's own episode!
show original episodes are some the most interesting ones
Yes! It is definitely one of the best books in the series. The atmosphere in the book came to life!
The book's cover creeped me out SO MUCH as a kid. I could hardly stand to look at it. Its one of the best stories out of the series! The atmosphere and the twist were really fun.
Bro same! I wanted an adaptation so fucking bad.
I can tell you had so much fun making this. Love the energy😊
I never read goosebumps as a kid, but I saw them all the time! It's nice to see what they are like after all these years
the new wolfe content this year is so good. john wolfe fans having a FEAST this year

This was so great, John! More please! 😊
And congrats on the baby!!
Yay! So excited for this video! As a child, I was super obsessed with the Goosebumps books and show (or ‘Kippenvel’ as it’s called in my language; Dutch). However, Slappy scared me so much that my mother had to come and check my bedroom every night to make sure Slappy wasn’t hiding somewhere😂

I truly loved Goosebumps as a child. I had only a few of the books but they were really entertaining reading and helped me grow my love for reading in those early years. The show was very goofy, not scary at all (unlike some of the books) but it was still awesome. Sometimes I rewatch the episodes here in RUclips, very nostalgic indeed 😁

So excited to watch this!! I occasionally still watch the show because I think it’s funny at this point
This was interesting for me because I wasn't allowed to read or watch Goosebumps growing up, and only had a general knowledge of some stories from what I'd heard secondhand. John has a knack for really fleshing out his views without presenting them in such a way that you can't form your own opinion if you don't already have one. Looking forward to the next one!
Holy crap. I loved this so much. I sincerely hope this becomes a series or something, whether it's just Goosebumps or any R.L. Stine or spooky children's horror!
Came here to say the same thing! I loved Goosebumps and love John's take on them and making fun of them :D
Could easily be a series 🙌🏻👏🏻
I really enjoyed your analysis of these two stories and your scoring scale is whimsical. I mainly wanted to comment that I am thankful that I am not the only person who thought troll 2 when I was watching these clips and your reading of quotes. Though it's a fun world where Troll 1's main character was Harry Potter to coincide with the 90's kids fiction theme.
John out here having a newborn and also dropping his best video ever. I feel like I’ve waited for this series since childhood cringe lol. The editing and jokes were spot on. (Sorry future John!) I really, REALLY hope this becomes a full fledged series. Can’t wait for more!
I never knew Dead House was the first book, judging by the tagline I thought it was really late in the series when they had run out of ideas. "It will just kill you" is so (unintentionally??) hilarious to me
A new Goosebumps just came out called "Slime Doesn't Pay!" So excitinggggg. "The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight" is my all time favorite.
It's nice seeing that you had fun making this video - we can see it through the edits and the humor haha
I myself didn't get into Goosebumps as a kid and was more into those Magic Tree House books so this revisit was a cool introduction for me!
I have such find memories of the Goosebumps books, my big sister who passed away 3 years ago used to read the books to me before bed as a kid. Love this video John! ❤
Really enjoyed this video and the amount of work you put into it really shows! Loved the way you used the books you have to highlight the passages being spoken about. I liked seeing the contrast between the television show and how it was originally written. I also just really enjoy the concept. I think it’s fun. I’ve never read or watched Goosebumps but I’ve always been curious about them so I’m enjoying learning the stories. 🥰
Two stories I really remember from my goosebumps days are "How I Got My Shrunken Head" and "Egg Marshans From Mars". Dunno if they ever got TV series releases but I'd love to see you do those. These were fun tho, typically anything you choose to do is usually pretty entertaining.
How I got my Shrunken Head was a two parter in season 4 of the show. I don't recall if the egg one got an episode though...
Love goosebumps, looking forward to the vid
There's also The Haunting Hour TV series which is also based on RL Stine books if you can't wait for the Hulu series.
Thanks for reviewing Goosebumps! My fondest memory of these books/movies is when my sisters and I introduced the Stay Out of the Basement movie to my grandma. She as super into it, got scared, and was even whispering, “Don’t go into the basement!” It was so funny at the time, but now it is a bittersweet memory because she unexpectedly passed away a few years later. Definitely a super nostalgic series.
I enjoyed reading your comment:)

Love the editing! Your wryness comes across really well. Even as a kid I found these books very cheesy, but still had a fascination with the bizarre scenarios and over-the-top, grotesque imagery. (Goosebumps to Junji Ito pipeline confirmed.)
I'm a 1998er, so safe to say I grew up more in the 2000s, but goosebumps was my sh*t. Definitely the gateway to my adult horror enjoyment. The one with the human gnomes and the evil cat played a starring role in my nightmares lol

Man i love Goosebumps! the editing was so good, im lookin forward to the next 2 books already :D
Hi John, I noticed that at 26:00 you had wondered about why Stine didn’t write another “Welcome to the Dead House” book, and I have an answer. He tried. After a long lawsuit with Scholastic thinking that he was paying others to write his books, his contract didn’t get renewed. Stine decided that he didn’t need Scholastic and came up with the book series “Goosebumps Gold”. This series would have about 9 books, the only 2 named ones were relating to the haunted mask and welcome to the dead house. Unfortunately this series never even released, fortunately the other haunted mask book was released under a different name, but the new Welcome to the Dead House novel, along with the other 7 unnamed books are considered lost media. I have an idea why this might be. There is a book released by R.L Stine that talks about his process with making the goosebumps books. It explains a few unmade books like “Dead dogs don’t Fetch”. One of the main reasons why he never wrote some of those books is because he had trouble coming up with ideas for them. A similar thing happened with brain juice, where it took him and his publishers a while to come up with anything to write for that book. The only reason we know the title of the first 2 books is because it was leaked by an unknown user, otherwise we wouldn’t know and R.L Stine most likely wouldn’t have told us. Maybe Stine couldn’t come up with the idea for the new Welcome to The Dead house, and with that combined with the new series without a million dollar company to back them up incase it failed, Stine might’ve shyed out from it. Just a theory. 🤗
I'm really enjoying the editing in this and your other recent videos. Props to your editor.
Tangentially related: I found a blog that does this same thing (revisiting as an adult) for the Scary Stories books. It was really fun to read. Looking forward to more of this from you
This segment made me so happy. Thanks for making these John! Great to have on at work.
Goosebumps came out when i was ten, so i shared a lot of the stories and later the TV show with my younger sister (and, many years later, my own kids). The series is great for reluctant readers and kids who are into spooky stories, but not quite ready for Christopher Pike or VC Andrews. I'm only five minutes in but already so excited for this video and any sequels!
Tim Jacobus or bust! - there's an interesting video out there about the few unpublished Goosebumps books, some of which have fully finished art by Jacobus. His style is such a perfect kid friendly variation on the pulp horror covers of the time. A master of his medium.
Some of those unreleased covers Jacobus created were made for a cancelled "Goosebumps Gold" book lineup. "The Haunted Mask Lives!" & "Happy Holidays from Dead House" are two Jacobus illustrated. There's also a cancelled cover for Goosebumps Series 2000: The Incredible Shrinking Fifth Grader. There are some mockup covers for them online on the Goosebumps fan wiki!
This is perfect timing I literally just started watching the show again to get in the spooky month spirit can’t wait for more
How was that video over so quickly? Loved it!
Thanks, John!
When i started the video i was expecting a lot of things... But the last segment... Man, you caught me off guard there. 11/10
Oh! I was just recently thinking about your Childhood Cringe series, I have loved all your Goosebumps videos.
The editing in this video is great! Super fun cuts. Also, I love your hair it looks so healthy and nice!
Never was into goosebumps but excited to see what it was like! I was a little scaredy-cat as a kid 😂
Edit: Ok, I HAVE to know more about these! This was so fun 😊
I was too scared to read them as a kid. Considering giving them a chance now lol
This was a delight to watch, I've wondered about this for a long time and I'm glad to see you do it
I read some Goosebumps as a kid but don't remember most of the stories, so this is a fun way to relive that time lol. Would definitely watch a whole series of these!
As a long time fan of your horror game shorts, this and the debunking ghost videos have been fantastic. Good choice in type of content that melds well with your previous content. Looking forward to more!
This was... amazing lol. I really hope this turns into a series lol.
i loved goosebumps as a kid which turned into a passion for horror/suspense movies.excited to see your perception of them as an adult and if they hold up
I read and re-read goosebumps a thousand times as a kid, and have made it tradition to watch the series every year at least once in October. This was such a fun video! I would definitely watch as many of these reviews as you felt like making, just saying lmao
John, now I NEED you to review all the books regardless if they have a tv special or not. Your humor is worth it. I loved goosebumps as a kid, and had all of the ones published at the time. I donated them as a teen (“cause they were for babies”) and I regret it so much now. 😢
I'm here for John's Booktube arc and would definitely like to see more of these because there are both some good entries later and some that pull this really obnoxious thing Stine likes to do that I call It's All A Prank Bro.
In my mind, Jim Thiesen's cover art deserves a solid five rating! That one has always been one of my favorite book cover arts of all time.
Thank you for bringing out his name. I've looked up his website, and as expected his art is good, but just not always suitable for mainstream consumers.
