Dutch developer .. explains the dutch surnames in game
reiziger = “traveler”
Eilander = “islander”
Vanderboom= “of the tree”
Vandermeer= “of the lake”
The names are normally written like this:
(First name) Van der Boom
(first name) Van der Meer
Van der: “of the...”
Van: “of...”
De: “The...”
🤯
Void Spam same
Bruce Wanker, The Incredible Sulk - why they’re just common dutch surnames
That makes a LOT of sense. I still wish they'd picked Vanderbloom because of the plant symbology.
Taiya001 - i think they wanted to pick accurate surnames, not made up. At least i never heard of “Van der Bloom” because “bloom” has no meaning but boom (the oo pronounced like you say “ooh...”) is tree.
John, you're probably the only youtuber that can successfully support games like rusty lake series, the cat lady, the downfall, Kathy Rain and all those kinda"atmospheric"(or 90s maybe ?) games, but most importantly you successfully PLAY those indie games without ruining the nostalgic atmosphere and still keeping them interesting in your own unique way. Keep up your unique personality John!!!
I know right! That’s a great personality :>

There's a lot ppl doing that i don't see ur point
i like how dale wakes up in a cold, strange room and he decides to just color pictures of himself and laura
Hehe, I always think about the illogical things the characters do in these situations
Paradox is a psychological evaluation of Dale via the time loop he's stuck in. It takes place while Dale and Laura's corrupted soul are hooked up to the machine at the end of The Cave. Dale escapes the loop in one of the two secret endings (canonically, in the Golden ending), after which he's given the Golden Cube and sent up the elevator to experience Birthday and Theatre as Harvey, in 1893, sees a vision of him ascending to the Hotel.
No games have taken place after Dale's ascent still, and Hotel came out in 2015, the same year the series started. XD
The timeline of this series is pretty wild. Of all the games with "Cube Escape" in the title, the earliest point with a date is Arles in 1888. But that seems to be something of an offshoot game for what we know right now, so of the main story, the earliest point in a Cube Escape game is Birthday in 1939, and we can extrapolate, obviously, that Dale was born in 1930. The file cards in chapter 1 give Aldous' birthday as 1799, after the events of Paradise in 1796. The files also give Jakob and Caroline's birthdays as earlier in the Winter 1775 and Summer 1750. Roots takes place between 1860 (1859 if you do all the medallions) and 1935, and Hotel takes place in 1893.
Important timeline events: Jakob becomes Mr. Owl in 1796. Aldous and William Vanderboom complete the elixir in 1859. William dies and Aldous becomes Mr. Crow. The Corrupted souls escaped the Hotel into the Lake in 1894. Dale is born in 1930. William is reborn as Laura in 1935. Dale's family is killed in 1939; Mr. Owl already knows who he is. Laura dies in 1971. Dale's investigation and journey begin in 1972.
We know Dale's birthday memory is in chapter 2 is a memory of 1939, but the rest of Paradox doesn't have a date. Assuming the "present" sections are shortly after the events of Case 23/The Mill/Theatre/The Cave, then the Present Mind exists around 1972. We have no information regarding the future.
Seasons ends in Winter 1981. This is the latest date given in any of the games, and appears to feature a setup intended to restore Laura back to life, which appears to succeed. I'm not sure how this all fits together. I was under the impression--not sure why, but I feel like I read an interview--that this was the final installment. Some of the language seems to imply that as well: Mr. Owl's appeal to Dale; his conversation with Laura. It all feels very final. But the journey also doesn't feel complete. We don't know how we get from 1972 to 1981. As ambiguous and open as these guys like to keep things, I don't think they'd leave THAT much in the air.
*But anyway, tl;dr timeline*
Earliest Known Point: *Summer 1750* (Caroline Eilander is born)
Latest Known Point: *Winter 1981* (End of Cube Escape: Seasons)
That's very insightful, thanks
thanks
Oh yeah, *John: THE GAME ISN'T OVER YET.* Collect the hidden achievements, and you'll be able to get two more endings. I think your matryoshka doll might play a part, too.
Bump.
Scratch-O, oh good I was wondering where the matryoshka doll was going to play in.
He usually doesn't do secret ending but I hope he makes an exception here
The dear head guy is doing something with that doll on tv 276 before he completes chapter two
He didn't get to check that last TV channel, and there was that locked cabinet he couldn't open.. I want to see morreeeee
I love that the Devs sent you that dossier that’s cool!
Lauren Bee q. AaAAAAaAAaAaAAaaAaaAaaAaaaAaAaqQDddddaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-$$&§
I love how the Magician/David Eilander from Paradise still sounds so smug over the phone and Dale angrily goes 'When will you arrive?' because he knows what's coming.
For sure. And I think the Magician sounds like the manager who fires Bob Hill at the Johnsson bird food factory in The White Door...
The idea of having a real life item with a rusty lake clue on it fills me with immeasurable excitement
ikr
"What does this symbol mean?! Demonetisation. That's what it means." lmao
Their plot chart must be massive, but I always enjoy watching you play it.
If only there were more developers like them...
Also the postcard is really nice!
Admiral Kizaru Good, caring indies exist in large amounts. They just get drowned on stores like steam nowadays.
John was wrong?! How am I ever going to trust him again?! When he says "Hey guys, its John and today we're playing (Insert game here)" can I really trust he's actually gunna play that game? How do I know he wont just be tricking us again? I need to think on this. I feel betrayed.
JK
OH GOD WE CAN'T EVER TRUST HIM AGAIN NOOOOOOO (lol jk John's still mah favorite)
@@maliadavis6901 ruclips.net/video/wBxv0Y2Un4I/видео.html
I like that way of including kickstarters - it's always nice when developers try to make backer bonuses that *add* to the game, rather than distracting from it. In this case, having all those fluff entries incentivises you to make a note of the relevant names, without the developers having to sit there and generate tons of junk data (I assume they did something similar for the phone book, though I was having trouble making the text out). I did find the entries themselves a touch immersion breaking, but they were also good for a laugh if you wanted to sit there and just flip through, so... swings and roundabouts?
"THEY TOOK OUR HARD EARNED RUSSIAN NESTING DOLL!"
The dossier and having Kimmy back was so nice. I always love a good Rusty Lake/Cube Escape game!
Wow, you're so sweet to actually mention being wrong about the 24hr thing... And very cool to mention it, as to not pass on the misconception. You didn't have to do it, but you did.
Mad props brah. 😎
Yes 😤👏
The film is fantastic.
Also, the devs sound amazing. They really care about their fans. They deserve a lot of credit for their games and the film.
In your defense @john wolfe Once upon a time it WAS a 24 hour wait before you report a missing person. Times change and I guess they changed that rule to the reporting procedure. @ daguys stop giving a hard time lol
I know this is a year off, but they changed the procedure because they have found that the first 24 hours are the most important for a missing person. If they typically can’t be found within that time frame their odds of still being alive drop dramatically.
I do love this game's lore, but it is a tad confusing.... I do really like the concept, & the corrupted souls are super creepy. I'd love to see their take on an extra horror-y version... More like "Rusty Lake Hotel". It had such a creepy vibe, & the whole eating the weird recipes made it extra strange.
How dare you get something wrong, John! We’ll ready the cross and nails in the morning. Better hope you’ve got a buddy named Peter to help you carry it.
Laura, like Laura Palmer?
Dale, like Dale Cooper?
Yes, the series is very Twin Peaks-inspired. If you like TP, the Rusty Lake universe will definitely interest you
I really need to see Twin Peaks.
What did you think of TP season 3?
Glass eye!? John, you better boil it first...
Nice Night Cry reference.
And spice it well.
Me: *sees the outline of a fire on the seal*
Also Me: "BURN THE SEAL!!! NO, GO BACK!!! BURN THE SEAL!!!"
Appreciate the correction bud, keep up the solid gameplay.
I didn't feel like the correction was necessary. People are wrong all the time and that's something so minor. Now if the whole video was about missing persons then I understand. But it wasn't. It was a video game.
Pastel Princess Eh, it was a good gesture as far as community communication goes. Also, this kind of misinformation could get people hurt at some point.
@@firasource All it takes is one person to assume that you need to wait 24 hours to report someone missing for that little bit of info to do a whole lot of harm. Nobody is slamming the book down on John, if anything we're acknowledging that he didn't have to but it's great that he did.
@@firasource It's a myth that needs to be broken. It sucks that people jump on his back to correct it, but it's something I feel strongly about. You don't need to wait, if you think someone's missing you call the police and report them missing. It's good for everyone to know in any context.
@@tarjet3867 The issue is if people are using gaming youtubers to become 100% informed on anything then I really fear for how easily they'd take anyone's info at face value. While John may have been wrong in this instance, any viewers who take info without question are more wrong for being lazy enough not to search it themselves.
My favourite thing in the world is when John says "exCUSE me?"
My prayers have been answered. Thank you, John, for only taking 3 months this time instead of 9.
But seriously, thanks for the vid
Paradox actually came out Sept 20th so it's been 7 weeks, not "3 months" lol
@@JohnWolfe Sorry, my bad. My college education has been working out flawlessly for me, if you couldn't tell.
reflecting on your comments on the deep lore, I also feel like each game just digs deeper and doesn't really offer resolution. there has never been a point where I thought "ah, that's the ending" but I guess that's the whole point. after Dale becomes lord of the lake, the cycle will repeat with a new person to be corrupted somehow
Bahaha, I noticed the same thing in the comments last video. I was shocked at how many people wanted to chime in about the missing person thing... jeez.
Also, the paradox is how we're in the same video but John's hair is in conflicting styles... HOW CAN THAT BE?!
hardfugoo1 they wanted to correct misinformation, and I'm glad he acknowledged it.
I thought it was a joke when he said it, I didn't think he actually believed it.
Koudelka lol at your naiveness of the nobility of their intentions.
@@OGKoudelka they just harrassed him so much in the comments that he had to say something to make people stop
@@hardfugoo1 Honestly, People have died from the misconception that you need for wait 24 hours, so I don't really see how you can hold yourself as such about the issue. It's a good thing he brought it up, period.
Rose Lavender no no they haven’t. If you didn’t call the police when your kid or loved one was taken.... that’s on you. Now if an ignorant cop said “no we can’t do anything til tomorrow...” then it wouldn’t be their fault. But no sensible human has ever done what you claimed lol.
*People have DIED* 😂😂😂
As you see in the forest there's multiple Dales doing diferent things, do the achivements for each chapter that are done with help from the movie and unlock the end of the loop
What do the achievements have to do with the multiple Dales?
Also, I could rant about this all day, but the secret endings aren't enough to convince me that this game is canon with the other games. I don't think anything would be. It's just too inconsistent.
@@Nat_the_Chicken Paradox isn't real, it happens while Dale and Laura are conected to the machine at the end of "The Cave". Each vial is a different outcome, Red is normal Dale seeing her die, Blue is him corrupting and killing her and thru the achivements you get the Green one that makes Dale die instead. Then the second secret ending is where an elevator shows up in a white room (like Cave's ending) and from there is when Dale would expirience Birthday and Theatre. Basically Paradox is a test Mr Owl makes to see if Dale can be a worthy succesor to get rid of the souls of his family (Paradise) that escaped from Hotel
@@Daiskken I'm still not sure about all of that, but Paradox happening inside their heads is probably the best theory I've heard yet. It just seemed like the Chapter 2 secret ending was like, "Oh hey, did you forget about the other games? Here's a little piece of tape to tack this one on." I think the game is best experienced on its own, but by people who have played most of the other games.
@@Nat_the_Chickeni thoght it was kinda obvious. both the canon ending and the whole mind loop. There was no nuance to it the game basicly told us there is no theory :/
@@shimaaalayie9965 The game didn't tell us anything except "oh look it's Dale and Laura and she gets murdered again lol. Anyway next game"
Rusty Lake devs sure likes to hide things. I mean, they hide the clues for the secret endings so deep within the game menu that not even John can notice it existed. And then John doesn't click "Achievement" at the end of the chapter either! Talk about hidden in plain sight!
John: Previously....
Me: Oh good! He's gonna remind us of all the stories from the previous games.
John: Mentions game that has nothing to do with Rusty Lake
John you are actually right in a sense, you can report a missing person before 24 hours have past, but if the person in question is over the age of 18 then the police won’t start an investigation before 24 hours have passed. That’s how it works in my country anyway.
In America, it doesn't work like that. Report someone if you think they're missing. Should be simple as that.
@@tarjet3867 They're not saying to wait to report, they're saying their police will wait 24 hrs after you do if the person is a certain age to begin a search. It's similar in America that they put people on a priority list. An immediate search will happen for a toddler or the eldery, but a report on a missing, healthy 21 year old (with no sign of kidnapping) can be pushed to the back burner for up to 24 hours before they commence a proper search.
How it actually works, outside numbers, is that the Police act on "what is unusual". If someone is missing, and there is every reason to believe there might be something undue about the disappearance the police can investigate immediately. If you expected your wife home for dinner and she is late, the police will wait.
This whole series, I've been trying to understand the significance of Dale Vandermeer and his role in all this, and now that we see him have something to do with the deer, it makes me want to go back and watch all the other games and see what I missed. There's such rich symbolism in every game, I love it, but it can be exhausting.
That was thoughtful of you to correct yourself about the missing person report thing, I really appreciate that
Ps. I love your crazy hair, you should wear it like that more often lol
I see the glorious floof has returned.
All hail the mighty gamer John Wolfe: the lord of the floof.
Hey John, just wanted to say that I've spent the better part of the past three days binge-watching all your Cube Escape/Rusty Lake LP's. After seeing you play through so many terrible horror jaunts, it's great to see you actually enjoying a series for a change. Have become way more invested in this franchise than I ever thought I would thanks to your videos, and I'm so happy you took the time to make and post them. Thank you and keep being awesome!
True fact: I ended up subscribing to your channel after having watched the movie, and then trying to find play-throughs of the Cube Escape games.
Hi John, if you're looking for a puzzler to fill the void between Cube Escape games I highly suggest Submachine. It's a similarly interconnected series of games from 2005 with a level of mystery and intrigue I personally prefer over Cube Escape.
I'm not sure how well it'd turn out as a let's play in comparison, but the series (and its fandom) could use some light from being underground for so long.
Kevin S, I love Mateusz Skutnik! I’d also suggest his other smallers like The Fog Fall and Scene of the Crime; Covert Front had too much of an abrupt feeder-ending
@@avynlie thanks for mentioning the name, these games look fantastic!
Don't forget daymare town series.
Mateusz Skutnik is one of my favorite artists/puzzle storytellers. the Covert Front and Fog Fall series would be my personal choices to play. Less filler puzzles and more interesting story telling.
@@avynlie Covert Front did have a weird ending but up until then it was very good. I always thought there would be more to the series.
I've been playing the cube games and you blunt wtf attitude is actually how I found you as a gaming channel..
I'm so glad the rusty lake lake gave you special access and gave you recognition.
You deserve it. I don't comment often, but thank you for sticking through. Thank you John.
"The old Dale can't come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, 'cause he's dead!"
MOTH, CROW, MURDER, FEAR, MY CORRUPTED SOUL!
That movie did a great job on catching the essence of these games. Love these games.
quinton quill I agree 100%. The movie also does a fantastic job of capturing the feeling of playing a Rusty Lake-game for the first time. And this is coming from somebody who has been a fan for a very long time, since at least the release of Case 23. The way they convey the act of him looking around the room as we shift view from one corner of the room to the next, finding a book of matches in a drawer (alongside something that definitely should not be there), drinking something only to spit out a physical object, matching symbols in order to open up something. It is all there. And off course, the appearance of everyone’s favorite bird-headed fellow.
i started watching this playthrough after i played paradox chapter one without knowing about the series, its so crazy about how intricate the story becomes + how easy it is to create an individual story when only plaything thru one of the games ! (i had this whole theory about how the corrupted soul was actually dale's shadow- and the crow was a representation of 'death') but yeah i'm so happy i found john thru this vids, i cant wait to watch more recent vids after finishing this off ! :D
Oh hell yes. I love the puzzles in these games.
The raw petty energy exuding from the first minute of this video is astounding and awe-inspiring.
It was super cool finding the RUclipsr Easter eggs. Great game and great video as always. Thank you.
OMG-
I have never laffed so MUCH!!
I have been STUCK, during this game- at the birthday party.
So- I gave up- now I am HERE!
4 minutes into this 2 hours long video and I'm already hitting the like button! That's what happens when you're a hardcore Rusty Lake AND John Wolfe fan! :D
I feel bad for anyone who jumped into this one based on the short film without playing any of the others, honestly. Thanks for playing it for us, John!
Why did it take me 2 years to realise that mr. rabbit is called mr. Eilander cause he's mr. Owl's brother
Thanks for this video and the other Cube Escape/Rusty Lake videos, John. They are what helped me find you in the first place and I constantly come back to these videos to watch whenever I want to watch something. I like your thoughtfulness and it's extremely cool to watch you figure out the puzzles so quickly--it's mindblowingly impressive. I hope you're doing okay and really look forward to your videos. Thanks a million for the time, effort, and everything you put into making and uploading these videos.
0:32 was that long pause after "Hey Guys" acknowledging Guys' ghost?

John just casually throwing that he has a RUclips channel *rolls eyes*
Everytime I think I've grasped the lore it slaps me around the head with that one random fish and calls me a fool
I'm a simple gal.
I see a new John Wolfe video, I click, I watch, I like, I report missing persons.
That plot twist in the end wow-
John gets way more startled from opening a door to a puzzle than to a jump scare 😅
When John saw himself i instantly had a fat smile on my face!
That beginning had me sh00k its so simple to apologize
Honestly, I don't understand the story fully (hard for me to keep characters and events *and* reincarnations in order), but I love the puzzles and the story I can decipher, so I'm really glad you're keeping up with the series, as these are pretty fun to watch. Keep up the good work!
Oh man I started from rusty lake roots then started from the beginning rewatched roots in journey and ended here. Such
a great journey!!
The music sometimes sounds very minecraft-y and honestly, I love it. It's so relaxing and nice.
I did play and finish this games 1st chapter. Sadly I didn't have the money to finish the second chapter.
Love you John!! ❤ ❤
Stay safe!!
Cube escape is such a great series I legit grew up with
Holy crap Kimmy is so cute. I loved you guys solving the puzzles together, it was freaking adorable
I just want to say that I am beyond impressed. Not many people swallow their pride and admit they're wrong. This is only one of the reasons that I believe you are one of the top RUclipsrs. You admit to faults and state you will improve. Keep up the great mindset and videos!
Watching John play this is so weird, because he breezes through puzzles that took me forever, but then he gets really stuck on puzzles that I figured out immediately.
Welcome back! Hope you had a good weekend away buddy.
Wow. No idea about the missing person 24 hour thing. The dossier was so COOL! I love this series. :D
thank you for playing (and enjoying) the entire series so far!!! this is definitely one of my favorite series, both your playthrough and the games themselves. but what a cliffhanger -- what happened to the nesting dolls?????? the world may never know...........
John: Lets go up, to the left,
Me: Take a step back y'all
So Cube Escape is actually how/why I stumbled upon your channel. I had played all the games and played this one, and looking for videos on it I found your playlist!
Cube Escape: Paradox: Kimmy saves John's ass yet again
48:54 wow so creepy. Before when you were talking about missing the puzzle, I thought what if Kimmy randomly appeared and helped find it for him. And she did! lol
Thank you for carrying in this series. You are the only person I could watch playing it!
the moment youtube loaded up and this was the first thumbnail i saw i knew i was truly blessed on this day
You're pretty awesome for always admitting mistakes you've made. I already knew you didn't have to wait 24 hours to report a missing person, but I didn't think much of it.
It's so chilling to watch you just cheerfully describe what's in the dossier 😆♥️
I don't think it's super inaccessible for new players actually, I started playing these games with Cube Escape: Paradox without knowing anything about it, got super intrigued by what was going on, then played the rest of the series and was finally able to piece together all the bits of the stories (although when I replay it again and again I find and discover new stuff each time!) It helps that time doesn't really seem to matter or exist in the Rusty Lake universe as it's all looping and changing anyway ("the past is never dead, it's not even past")
So, I think it's a good thing that new-comers don't get every reference from Roots or Paradise or Paradox. If they like it they'll look up the older games to understand what they just experienced. . . Exactly how yo looked up the free Cube escape games after playing Hotel!
Here's the John's hedgehog hair again, beautiful as ever
This series sure was a trip, I dont quite understand, but I loved it.
Imagine hiring a magician for your kid's birthday party and all he does for the entire length of it is play hide-and-seek around your house before killing you.
Unreal.
Speculations in Dale story: Detective Vandameer was first introduced having dead parents. He tries to erase/extract his memories in the Mental Health And Fishing. In doing so the dark memories in the rusty lake hotel had taken a physical form/ the potion the rusty lake gave made him into Jekyll And Hyde. Detective Vandameer can't remember his past had a new life as a Detective but he found out that a girl has been killed(Laura)(killed by Vandameers Dark Memory)....in finding out the answers to the killing he founds out that his past isn't past because it was erased and the past isn't dead because it is still alive killing people shown in the paradox..Chapter one in the paradox is the prequel...the mental healths mission is to erase his past memory thats why the room was specialized to aid him, the brochure in the room is a clue specially created to aid him erase his memory(not the blue vial D) that is why the potion he drink was red, he wishes to forget. The second chapter is the sequel...He is a detective and his investigation leads him to mental health rusty lake...and a second prescription is made so that he can find the answer on who killed Laura(different brochure-not the red vial)...and I think that is why rusty lakes motto is A place to empty the mind and reflect on the past. The crow ask in the short film.."did you made the right choice" Did Dale really made the right choice to erase his past rather than forget it.....also the potions metaphor is a key because Dale think it's a key to escape his past.
This was the series that really got me into your channel. I played the first half of this and decided to wait until you posted a video before I went on to the second half. Loving the video so far!
I think this is my favorite game in the series so far. It's so bizarre and the movie is brilliant. I do hope you go through and get the secret endings. Yes, there are secret endings, plural. And they answer certain things while making other things even more confusing.
These games are so cool.
I found John’s card in this game when I played it a while ago. I thought that was a really cool touch for the backers and supporters.
This was incredible! I’m so glad the quality of their games maintained throughout the series and it was a pleasure watching John experience them as well. Bravo Rusty Lake Team! The movie experience was beautifully crafted as well. Thanks John for all your time and effort! Whenever these videos end it still feels like I missed a bunch of information or some things went over my head lol I hope to see more from this development team! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I honestly love how you take the time to correct yourself from a previous video, especially when it’s something like this. We all make mistakes but it’s nice to see someone take the time and address it. You’re pretty awesome.
I was JUST watching your Rusty Lake Roots playthrough too. What the hell, John.
42:00 "I'm afraid I can't let you do that John.
Those devs seem like cool people! Glad they appreciated your playthroughs enough to send you that dossier, they're a really entertaining game series.
oof was just about to go to sleep but now i HAVE to stay up for this. mega hyped for this playthru!!!
I know what you mean. About to pass out and i've got a class presentation tomorrow but as soon I saw this I had to click it
Analytics exam tomorrow BUT MA BOY JOHN POSTED so
Here we are.
I have fallen in love with this series! Didnt even know about it until yesterday but whoa.
However, i think its all vague enough to understand in any order, which is another strength of their way of storytelling.
Keep being awesome, John!
It's nice that John takes the time in his videos to apologize for small mistakes and is being humble about it. + love this series!
I remember playing this game when it first came out before I knew what Rusty lake even was and seeing you in it John 😂 It wasn't until I got to this video on your channel after looking up an entirely different series walkthrough that I figured out where I'd seen you before tho 😂
Yay cube escape paradox! I love these games. I really enjoyed when kimmy streamed this. So many puzzles and what a big mystery. It really makes you think and get you to write stuff on paper to figure out. Nice going on the commentary for the movie john. Really smart.
It all Makes me want to go over the entire lore. So dale was gonna inherit rusty lake from Mr owl. People should try playing and getting into this series. They are very good puzzle games. I think you can find other Matroska dolls I think. Which I think can only be solved through the items provided in the dossier.
Anyway I really loved this series and hope to see more
A dossier? Rusty Lake must love you!
I was really waiting for this. You playing the whole series made me want to play this one myself, and I did! It´s the very first time I´ve bought a game and it was totally worth it. And then I was anticipating you playthrough, just to see YOU play it, so thanks for taking the time to do it
