  • SmallRig Nikon Z6ii cage which also fits the Nikon Z6, Nikon Z7 & Nikon Z7ii. This camera cage is a really solid bit of gear and holds the camera perfectly in place with only one locking point making it very easy to remove from the cage for gimbal use or putting in an underwater housing etc... SmallRig sent me this item for review and I have a review of it on my website on the page below.

    Thank you! I'm trying to build a rig for my Z6ii and I guess I'll start with this cage 2824, but need to check more videos about rigs build with this cage.

      You're very welcome, the 2926 cage is a bit cheaper but is missing a few features that the 2824 has, like two NATO rails, the rubberpads securing it in place and the 2926 has two locking points so it takes a bit longer to mount and unmount the camera and you need to take the camera strap loops out also. Good luck with the build and before I forget to mention it I am popping up a a full Nikon Z6ii rig setup video over the next few days which might be of interest to you also. Covers everything on the Z6ii practically, from follow focus, matte box handles, filters etc...

      @@kieranhayesphotography Thank you! I guess 2824 seems to be better for me. Also I'd like to keep strap loops in place. I'll waiting for your Z6ii rig setup video!

      @@kieranhayesphotography Sounds great! Please tell which cage you used for this upcoming video? Also did you add a follow focus? I see there are wireless follow focus systems, so in that case you can still hold your rig with both hands instead of holding it with one hand while other hand is rotating follow focus ring. I'm still learning about different gear...

      @@NoWheelDrive it's the 2824 camera cage and I used a follow focus unit from SmallRig also. It's wired as whenever I am moving about I generally use my DJIRS2 Pro combo gimbal which has a wireless follow focus system in the kit. I still do use the follow focus even off the tripod but I use a left hand side handle also so you can grip that and still turn the follow focus wheel with your fingers. I talk about that on the video also 👍 Hope the video helps and would be interested in your thoughts on it.

    Wonderful video. I’m wondering if I could fit an Apple Air Tag in one of those square cutouts at the bottom…. and if the cage is Arca Swiss compatible.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  2 года назад

      Hello Michael apologies for the delayed reply, I only saw your comment now... I just checked the holes and an air tag won't fit sadly, they are 28 mm max diameter. The case needs an arc swiss quick release plate to work with a tripod with that mounting sadly also.

    Does the top bar rub against the camera above where the Nikon logo is? I saw another review with this cage and it had rubbed some of the finish/paint off, there.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  2 года назад

      Hi I actually has to check that as I know it's close alright. On mine it just rests against the front, you can still easily slide paper in between though and there is no pressure on it. I think you want to be pretty rough putting the camera in and out of the cage to mark it or else being rough with the housing in general to have any effect on the camera body.

    It doesn't act as an Arca swiss mount or L-Bracket does it? I want and L-bracket and a cage combined if possible.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Год назад +1

      Hi Jason, sadly no it doesn't and I know how you feel. I have an L-Bracket on my Z7ii and this cage on my Z6ii. It's a great cage and the nato rail is very handy. The only option you have is fitting two Arca swiss plates which would also work... only the one on the side wouldn't be on the Nodal point but a slightly longer plate would cure that. Only really needed if you want it for panoramic shots of course.

      @JasonLorette Год назад

      @@kieranhayesphotography Ahh, dang. I really would have thought they would have thought of that, everything else about it looks great…may have to go with just an L.

    • @kieranhayesphotography

      I got the smallRig L bracket that has the extendable L bracket and it doubles as a makeshift side handle for a light run and gun setup. Quick fast and adds a bit of stability also.

    Also does it feel heavy when added to the camera

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  2 года назад

      It weigh about 220 grams so it adds a small bit of weight but this is the foundation of your rig and everything hangs or bolts onto this so it needs to be solid. The slight bit of weight also makes the camera a bit more steady for video use. As you add items to your rig it gets a bit heavier but that also takes those micro jitters out of your footage too so weight can be a good and a bad thing. Personally I think it's close enough to being right. Then again I am used to using a D850 which is a fair bit heavier anyway. Hope that helps:-)

    Is it comfortable also when using it for photography

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  2 года назад

      For a camera cage yes it's comfortable for Photography also. It's contoured comfortably around the grip so it doesn't dig into your hand. It's always going to be more comfortable without it though and it's one of the reasons I went for that model, it's so easy to pop in and out of the cage, if you know you are just going to use it for photography you can take it out in seconds. Then when you want to go back into video mode simply pop it back in and away you go. The fact that it's just one locking point , you can leave the camera strap on also and it's so secure with the single locking point is why I love that cage.

      No problem at all. The wooden side handle is great also. I wondered a bit about it before it arrived but it's so comfortable to use, really makes a difference to the rig. Enjoy it :-)

      Hi Ronald, I am not sure about the Z5 with this cage I know the 2926 will fit the Z5, Z6 and Z6ii. The Z5 isn't listed as compatible with this cage. Sorry I can't be of more help.
