On my third flight with the DJI Avata 2 I think I may have destroyed it by breaking the gimbal, I even managed to shatter the ND filter on the lens at the time. Great video, Kieran! Thanks for the indepth review!
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed, it's a fantastic strobe for the money.
Is it just me, or does this guy talk too quiet to understand?
It's probably just my accent, Americans specifically have difficulty understanding me. Sorry about that but I can't change it.
May I know what z lens I should use for taking videos?
It depends on the effect you want to achieve really, but a good all round Z lens is the 24-70 F2.8. I tend to use the 35mm F1.8 and 50mm prime lens a lot as I really like the look from them.
It's not a mechanical shutter. It's a sensor shield.
Very true, that was aslip of the tongue, it's a sensor shield.
Be careful when you order: There is a version around that comes without the charging box!
Hi Matthias, thanks for that I didn't know they started to sell them without the charging case.
Brilliant review, thank you!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed it.
Great review! One thing I’ve been wondering is how much of the soft focus can be recovered using Topaz or a similar SW? As these SWs evolve, the performance gap between the $16K and $1.8K 600mm lenses becomes smaller. I thought this would be an interesting image quality evaluation.
Yes, thankfully AI software is now starting to really give us a new edge to our images and seriously helping to kill off some of the differences between these lenses. There is still a difference but it's certainly getting less.
Great video just went and picked it up for $50 that’s just a deal I couldn’t pass up
That's the deal of the century... How was it just $50?
@@kieranhayesphotography a outlet near my everything must go so like return packages from Amazon still brand new only this was missing was remote thanks to the app working great
Do you have to use dtap to use v mount?
Hi Mike, yes Dtap is necessary as the output voltage is higher. It's normally 14.4-14.8 volts so unless you have a DC socket with that voltage on your battery then you need to use Dtap. You can get cheap enough Dtap cables online. Or does your Vmount battery not have a Dtap connection?
Awesome video ❤
Thanks a million
Does it work with Nikon D850 ? any experience? How about ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B 4.0 Memory Card (Iridium)?
When I switched from my DSLR to mirrorless I went from my 14-24G lens to the 14-30 Z mount lens and they was no loss of quality. Better size, weight and filter threads.
The 14-30 is a great lens, for the money it's a steal and then having filter threads that work beautifully with a 100mm filter holder it's a joy to use.
as with most things in life, i am so far into the godox system, i could not think of changing now. i wish triggers worked across the board with more brands. great review!!
I am right there with you, we are getting to a stage now of there being so many channels available for transmitters that it should be possible. Wouldn't that make life a lot easier? All a long they kept them different to limit false triggers from other transmitters. Those days should nearly be gone now though. Thanks for watching and enjoy the Godox gear 👍
💥 Great video. I have a D7200 and a D750. The 7200 is mainly my wildlife body and the 750 is my event body. I want to step up my birding photography with something with good focus tracking of birds in flight. I was thinking of the Z7ii but you have me quite interested in the z6ii now. Do you know if they are equal with subject tracking for things like birds…??
Hi Jimmy, now that's a very good question and as the AF system is the same in both cameras there is no advantage there, the Z6ii has a slightly higher fps in burst mode though which is handy for birds in flight. I would throw another option at you.... The ZF as it has Bird AF auto focus that works every bit as well as it does in my Z8 and the Z9 also. The Z6iii is also another option but you will need more of a budget for that one then. I know a good few people using the ZF for capturing birds in flight and they are very happy with it.
Hi, great video, thanks. When is the new Q4 pro coming out. I want to buy now but if it is coming out soon then I will wait for it. Thanks heaps.

Thanks for a great video! It would have been cool (no pun) to test the Z8 with battery grip. The new Canon R5II has an active cooling fan built into it's grip.
Hi Nicolas, I will do one better than that in my next video, where I test out a new product coming soon for cooling the Z8 and this could be a game changer.

Solid review !!!
Hi Tom, thanks for the feedback and glad it helped.
wowsers that's huge! nice demo, thanks! I'm thinking about getting an elgato prompter or alternatively a neewer + iPad setup for talking head RUclips stuff. language education videos. what would you get for that sort of thing? Cheers!
Hi Steve, yes it's a big teleprompter alright, you can also get x14 model which is a 14" model here on Amazon amzn.to/3WtDIKu that one also comes with the bluetooth remote control which is very handy. The carrying case is nice too as it's easy to put away and keep safe when you are not using it or transporting it. They also have the X12b model which is a 12" model. Personally, I prefer the bigger screens to the 12" models as my camera is a bit of a distance away from me when I record my videos so the bigger screen helps then, these eyes are not as young as they used to be so I need all the help I can get.
Great vid! Thanks for making it
Glad you liked it and thanks a lot for the feedback 🙌
I just ordered one from eBay as that’s the only place I could find this small ring bracket. I was waiting for the R5ii to be announced as I was debating between the R5ii and Z8 but I think the z8 has more features (better articulating screen, back button illumination/night mode etc)
Ah the Z8 is a fantastic camera, so much camera for the price. The L Bracket is really cool. Enjoy the combo :-)
Your videos helped a lot to figure out overheating problems. Do you have any recommendations for d tap dummy batteries?
The Neewer Dtap to dummy battery works on the Z8 there is 20% off on Amazon right now for it in the USA amzn.to/467DBaN or a lightning deal on it in the UK for the next 10hrs. You can also get int on the Neewer website and 21% off with Code HAYES21. Smallrig also make one that works with the Z8 apparently but I haven't tried that one yet. Thanks for watching and for the feedback, I have another video coming up in the next week or two on cooling the Z8 you might find very interesting.
I got it for 191 on Amazon prime, excited to use it!
Now that's a bargain, enjoy it and let me know how you get on 👍
How does the unedited internal recording sound super crisp here? I've been watching other reviews and the recording's sound almost muffled on those videos. User error on their end perhaps? Either way, thanks for this review!
Now that's a very good question, I can only assume they had the one touch noise reduction switched on, when there is noise in the audio that's amazing but when there is no background noise it simply shouldn't be used. I have used these mics a lot and they have always delivered quality results, I also know a lot of people that have bought them and found the audio quality to be great out of them. I have found in clean audio setting if you use one touch noise reduction it just tries to eliminate noise that isn't there and that usually means high frequencies so that could very well explain the muffled sound that others have found. Thanks for watching and for the great question.
@@kieranhayesphotography Understood! Thanks for clarifying that. Have you tried testing wired lav mics on these, as well? I'm curious about the sound quality when doing that.
How's it compare to the 200-500mm though? because that's realistically what it's up against: can it tempt non-Z users to finally switch over?
There are a few differences in them, from a sharpness perspective the 180-600 is every bit as sharp or sharper than the 200-500. It has a shorter throw ratio for the zoom ring which is nice if you loose a subject you can quickly zoom back out to 180mm and with about a 80 degree rotation of the zoom ring you are back to 600mm. It also has a longer focal range of course. All in all it's a nice upgrade over the 200-500 but will it set the world on fire? Doubtful.
Geez I gotta sell my comica c3 now
Nothing wrong with having a few extra mics :-)
I really appreciate your efforts making this video.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching, really glad it helped.
Have one coming int the post. The power bank having it's own battery. Wow just wow! Neewer are fantastic
When I was doing the unboxing it took me totally by surprise, I had to double check the price again, these are crazy good for the money.
Im wondering how good it would be for landscape or portraits even...I can only afford one lens😅
It might be a wee bit long form r that one 😉, I generally say the 24-70 is a great all rounder. It's my workshorse lens and the F2.8 is pin sharp.
Quick question for you Kieran, How good is the eye level viewfinder on top tier mirrorless cameras compared to the optical viewfinder on similar level DSLRs, I haven't used any pro spec mirrorless cameras but I used some consumer grade cameras with LCD eye level viewfinders & haven't been impressed with the quality, thanks
Now that's a very good question, I wasn't a fan of EVFs at first at all I found them hard to use because of delay you would sometimes get in them and the slight stroboscopic effect you got. The pro level EVFs are very good now though. I had a few Z6ii's, I currently have a Z7ii and Z8 and they are really really good now especially the Z8. I prefer it now which is something I thought I would never say. I hope that helps a bit 👍
@@kieranhayesphotography Thanks, I'm in my mid 60s & eyes are not what they once were, I'll have to try the latest mirrorless offerings to evaluate.
@@dubsnapper4787 that was initial hesitation also, I spend way too long looking at screens all day I didn't want to be looking at another one. I would miss it now though.
I'll like to see someone add a camera on it instead of talking. I would also like to see one with a 16mm film camera like a Bolex and not one of those digital DSLR... Show and tell just not tell.
Hey, good point. This video was really a small part of my Nikon Z8 video rig review where I build up the rig itself. I don't have a film camera so wouldn't be able to do that but hey maybe that's an opening for you to create one and pop it up then. Anyway enjoy your week and keep filming.
You can get 21% off with my Neewer Discount code HAYES21 off all their products on the Neewer website.
What’s your view on the z6ii vs z6iii?
Now that's a very good question, fore personally it has to be the Z6iii for several reasons. Size and how it feels in the hand, auto focus is a good bit better also and finally for video the option of 6k so you can crop your videos in post and still have fantastic 4k footage. It would have to be the Z6iii for me. The only slight issue is the price. Do you shoot video or a specific genre of photography?
@@kieranhayesphotography I recently purchased the z6ii with the kit lens for 2k. I thought the z6iii bigger body would make it more cumbersome to handle actually. It’s basically for family, going out cam, and potentially get some side work.
Dear Kieran; I just subscribed to your channel. I watched a video you prepared and I liked it very much. Your style is very understandable and efficient. I bought a Z8. I have been using Nikon for many years. I want to give more importance to wildlife photography with my new camera. For this reason, first of all, do you have a video about bird photography that includes the settings I need to make on the camera? I can say that I am a little confused about changing the settings instantly. For this reason, I need to understand the logic well. I would be very pleased if you could help. Thanks.
Hi Amet, thanks for subscribing and for watching the video. I don't currently have a video on wildlife for the Z8 but I have a list of videos I want to do on the Z8 so I will add that to the list. It's a fantastic camera and with bird AF and those memory banks it makes setting it up and swapping modes so easy. Sorry I can't guide you to a video I have as of yet but hopefully I will get one sorted out soon.
I prefer the D850 but my older legends as the D700, D4 and the D3X are also still very fine. I got the Z5 pure out of interest and to have a Z camera. But the Z line will never replace my dslr's.
I also loved my D850 and honestly it painted me to swap to a mirrorless camera but when the Z8 came out I just had to buy it, paired with the Z series lenses it's an awesome bit of kit for me personally as I also shoot a good bit of video. Nothing at all wrong with DSLR cameras in the right hands. A camera is just a tool as they say and at the end of the day it all comes down to the person using it. Enjoy those awesome cameras and I wish you great light going forward 👍
I’ve been out in a bamboo forest looking for pandas all day here in china, and my Sony is not turning on, I’m following all these tips
Hi Thomas, fingers crossed they work for you, they generally do but it all depends on the level of water that got in and the damage caused by it. Please do let me know how you get on and if it springs back into life when it dries out.
@@kieranhayesphotographyproblem happened with me today. brought my camera outside and forgot to bring it back inside until atleast 24 hours later. rained relatively heavy but it doesnt seem like any water got into the mirror or internals, but im not sure. ive done all these steps and still not turning on, the light which indicates that it has power or has an update in state (sd card has been plugged in etc) isnt lighting up either.
@@jaxn.cars1 sorry to hear that. The first two things I would do is let it air out completely, use silica gel and put both the camera and the silica gel in a plastic bag in a warm press or area for at least 24hrs. Make sure all the doors and the battery slot are open. While it's doing that just makes sure the battery is still charged. After 24hrs try it again, fingers crossed that will work.
I currently have a Prograde reader with Sandisk CFexpress card and D850. I don't really shoot video but I do bracket images in five image bursts. Regardless, I'm quit concerned of the heat generated when uploading. The general consensus is that heat is bad for electronics. The question is are these outside of the acceptable parameters? I'm willing to try a Prograde card but I do find it hard to believe they outperform a well established manufacturer such as Sandisk.
Hi Mike and yes totally right, heat is generally a huge problem for electronics. This isn't really about brands it's more about the technology used and the Prograde card is a gen 4.0 card which as you can imagine runs cooler and is designed to transfer data at far higher rates, so at lower data transfer rates this card is not stressed at all and generates less heat and can cope with the demand a lot easier then. SanDisk Gen 4.0 cards should be as good but when I posted this video this Prograde card was one of the few gen 4 cards out there and it was very reasonably priced considering the specs. All CF Express cards run warm though but then again so do most CPUs in computers 80 degrees Celsius is perfectly normal to them as like this card they are all solid state devices. Personally a cooler card is always going to make me a lot more at ease using it though.
@@kieranhayesphotography Thanks for the info. How do I know if a card is gen 4. Also does my reader support that?
@@Camrographer It generally states if the card is gen 4.0 on the companies website. Most of the recently released cards but there are still a lot of older cards on the market. For example Prograde still hyave this card in gen 3.0 on their website. So just double check it before you buy it. Your camera will not be able to take full advantage of the Gen 4.0 card but that's not the important part. There are a few different types of card readers from Prograde but it will supoport it you just won't get the very high data transfer rates if its an older gen card reader, but it should still be very fast. The Gen 4.0 cards do still get hot but not as hot as the previous generations.
@@kieranhayesphotography Thank you so much for the help!
@@Camrographer you're very welcome 👍
Great video! Do you know if the mic also syncs with a music speaker? Just wondering if I can also use it for in-person events. Thanks!
Hi, you can connect it to a line input or mic input on a speaker or PA system and record on it via the USBC port at the same time and even record directly on the mic while doing all that. It's an awesome little mic set.
@@kieranhayesphotography Thank you!
Wanted to justify getting that lens but in my type of side gig corporate events. I always take group large photos on a 24-120 f4S shooting at f4-6.3 with fill light 2-godox AD200 pro strategically placed in the room.. if i want to up the pace i have a 2nd and 3rd body (older Z6 and Z6ii) that is dedicated for prime day👍 35 1.8S/ 50 1.2S/ 85 1.2S/ and 135 Plena and lastly for reach the 70-200 2.8s
Ah the 24-70 is a dream to use, like you I shoot events also at times, but I mainly use this lens for on the fashion shoots where I have it on my Z7ii and the 70-200 then on my Z8, it covers everything I need generally speaking. Primes are awesome and have a bunch of them, you can't beat them for light gathering and sharpness though. The point is we all use our gear differently and that's the beauty of photography, there are so many genres to shoot.
Hello; If we want to change the auto focus/auto focus area setting with f2, we need to turn the rear/front ring while pressing f2, right? I guess it's not just something that happens by pressing f2.
Yes that's right, holding the f2 button and turning the front/rear dials will change the AF mode and also the AF area mode settings. It's really handy when you get used to it.
Damn! such annoying accent.
Ah sure it is what it is :-) Can't change it now...
I love my 24-70 2.8, coming from an 18-200 F mount, i dont miss the extra range - at least at the moment and had the z lens about 4 months now.
Hi Simon, it is one amazing lens that's for sure. I would say it's one of the best 24-70 F2.8 lenses out there from any brand right now. It is going to go down as an all time classic.
@@kieranhayesphotography I'm now split between 14-24 or 70-200 for my next purchase
@@smooney ohhhh the 70-200 is an amazing lens but it really does depend on what you shoot. The 14-24 is also really good for Ultra wide angle work though. Tough choice in ways but personally I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on the 70-200 F2.8. It's the sharpest 70-200 I have ever used. With little to no distortion and vignetting. A truly amazing lens.
Any changes in comparison since version 3 of Photo AI has been released? Newbie to photography here and I need all the easy editing help I can get. Awesome reviews and information!
Hi, thanks for the feedback and for watching. On all honesty Photo AI has improved a bit since then but Lightroom has also made a few tweeks so there is very little between them from a noise reduction perspective, I had a quick test of both of them only 10 days ago and LR is still really good.
Best zoomlens ever made
Exactly, it's an awesome bit of glass.
This Z24-70 F2.8 is very heavy lens for me even though it is very good lens. I also use Z26mm F2.8 and Z50mm F1.8 for my travel.
Oh those two primes will be a lot easier to carry around and use than the 24-70. I say it balances well as I am used to carrying heavier lenses all day and the weight savings do help a good bit. It's a fantastic but of glass though.
Thanks. My camera was stuck facing up. This video helped me repair and is all good now 🤙🏼
Delighted to hear it helped 🙂 enjoy the flying.
Enjoyed that demonstration ... thanks Kieran 👍
Hi Martin, Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed it.
Is that a UV filter you have on that wonderful Lens?
Even worse than a UV filter it's a diffusion filter. That's a Formatt Hitech 1/8th black Super mist diffusion filter. I use them a lot when I shoot video. I love the look they give on the 35mm and 50mm, I go a bit weaker for longer focal lengths then. Thanks for watching and for the question 👍
An excellent thorough and concise review, thanks. I agree with the other comments regarding the display. I had forgotten my 70-200 had one until I watched this video! I think I looked at it when I first tried the lens in the shop, but never again!
Maybe it's just me so then 🙂, I do shoot a good bit in low light. It's a great lens though and well worth the money. Thanks for the feedback and for watching 👍
