Gibson suggests that the strawberry imagery might connected to a text by Virgil (which probably would have been familiar to Bosch and Hendrik III because Virgil’s passage is referenced in Roman de la Rose, a popular poem in the Burgundian court). In this text, Virgil warns children to not gather strawberries, because “the cold, evil serpent” is hiding the grass nearby. It seems to me that Bosch’s strawberries could serve as an indirect reference to a serpent (and, by extension, the Fall and sin). Such associations fit well with the imagery for The Garden of Earthly Delights, don’t you think?

Yes the thumbnail we learned in english class that painting was from Novel Hamlet. Ophelia (joy) was drowning there .
Bachs Air on The G String is the sample... Yeri used that as a Bar in the rap saying that the sample sent RV in a New direction Musically. The Large strawberry and all strawberries are scattered everywhere in the painting and its said to represent temptation and sin, or others say it represents rebirth. No one has ever been able to truly decipher The Garden series of paintings. So it's up to anyone's interpretation. Bosch never signed or dated his work and it's well over 500 years old.

In Korea, the strawberry symbolizes "the coming of spring", like saying goodbye to the winter season. Irene and Wendy in that icy surface of the sea (winter season) in the 1st half of the MV, to Yeri and Joy's flower buds blossoming in the 2nd half could imply the spring season has finally started

My zero-art-knowledge dumbass wouldn't be able to catch any reference so I appreciate every comment here explaining about everything happening in the music video. Red Velvet is such a unique and interesting group, I'm so glad they exist in the Kpop world.
It’s about the garden of Eden basically but also a commentary on humanities sin and how it would produce it’s end
I suggest you look at it more, the connections are rather easy to interpret. It’s honestly such a powerful painting

As you said the mv is based on Bosch's painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, which is a triptych that depicts Garden of Eden, Earth and Hell. The mv is about Seulgi corrupting the girls with strawberries (instead of apples) and bringing them to Hell. Eden = pink gown scenes in the garden, where they sin with the strawberries. Earth = Yeri and Joy's solo scenes where they fall to sin with the birds. Hell = dark scenes with Irene and Wendy getting punished for their sins, plus Seulgi being the ruler of Hell.
This kind of alligns with the theory that Seulgi is the Black Mamba in the smcu storyline.

@@zdnce6009 Could be! On the original painting there also is a river on hell with similar boats to the one where Irene is. The river is mid-frozen, also paralleling the ice breaking under Wendy's feet.
So I read that the strawberry represents the apple eaten by adam & eve which casted them away from heaven. Seulgi is the Black Mamba which is also the villain in the Kwangya universe (aespa music videos) Yeri sitting inside of that shell (?) and later got out from it implies that she was pure and she stayed inside, sheltered but then gave in to temptation and stepped out. Joy might be some sort of fallen angel. Not sure what Irene & Wendy's roles though. I think Irene wants to make a pact with the devil.

This is what I could find about the strawberries and owl .The Garden of Earthly Delights has been called ‘probably the most famous scene of the underworld in all Western art’. If hell is other people, Bosch’s version involves people cavorting with owls, strawberries - and derrières tattooed with musical scores.
i believe seulgi is both the minerva owl and evil nightjar from bosch. The MV literally tells their interpretation of the garden of earthy delights. The water settings are basically the same across all 3 worlds. It is the heart the feeling that makes the world you live in a heaven, delightful society or hell
I'm literally crying cause I took a photography class last semester and our final project had to do with recreating famous paintings in a modern world, so I immediately recognized the paintings in the video, ugh I really wish I could show this to my teacher and the class

As a person who has seen the garden of earthly delights in real life in the museum, I immediately recognised the references in the MV, and it is just so good, I love the concept of the MV so much

Actually my theory is the members portrayed roles that can be found in the popular movie, "Alice in Wonderland." The classic book turned film depicts Alice and her exploration in a surreal dimension.
Based on the teaser, Seulgi is speculated to be Hatter. She is the only one who' is wearing a hat in the photos.
I also think that Seulgi who was seen painting the teaser relive the scene where Alice painted roses along with soldiers.
Moving on to Irene, she is speculated to be playing the role of Queen of Hearts. Her dress stands out the most among the members, not to mention she is wearing a crown.
As for Joy, I think that she could be Alice. In her individual teasers, she is seen with a red book, and is apparently reading the story of Red Velvet in their own Wonderland.
Yeri then played the role of Chesire Cat with her cat-like appearance in her individual teaser.
Lastly, Wendy represents the clock and white rabbit in "Alice in Wonderland." She connects the members from the real world to Wonderland.
Red Velvet's teaser clip also featured "flowers with eyes." This reminded me of a certain scene from "Alice in Wonderland" where the main character passed by a garden and encountered moving flowers with faces and eyes.
And I think it has probably connection in their past comebacks especially psycho and Queendom. But I might be wrong about my theory.
Because Looking back at "Psycho" MV dropped in 2020, Red Velvet was seen sewing pink dresses. In 2022, they finally finished their outfits and wore them on "Feel My Rhythm" teaser photos.
I also noticed that the members' poses from the former track were similar to the latter track's photos.
Lastly, in the jacket photo and teasers for "Pyscho" and "Queendom," Red Velvet appeared humongous just like when Alice was still in the real world.
However, after eating a piece of cake, Red Velvet shrinks to a smaller size. This explains their smaller appearance as ballerinas in their concept photos for feel the rhythm.
Actually im pretty sure Irene is the chesire cat as in alot of teasers she is shown with a cats tail. Not only that but in queendom when Yeri is walking along the corridor she follows cat prints and then is mentored by Irene. She also has the cats multicoloured eyes. I think imo that Seulgi is either the mad hatter or the red queen (the black headpiece she wears kinda looks like the one from black mamba) and Irene is the chesire cat

One thing that I notice around 3:31 and 3:39 of the MV where they all are seated on the ground, all of the girls are smiling and looking at the camera except Seulgi who not only not smiling but at 3:39 looks at Joy.
I definitely think Seulgi did something bad to Joy for the story in the MV. That last shot where only Seulgi turns her head while everyone else stares at the camera gave me creepy vibes hahah

Its bc JOY KNOWS . Seulgi is trying to tempt Joy,Yeri,Wendy into going into Hell with her. Seulgi dies and goes to hell when she gets drowned by Irene in the "Umpah Umpah" music video. She is trying to tempt the three girls so they can help get revenge on Irene,because Irene is trying to control them but only Seulgi knows. Seulgi uses strawberries,the forbidden fruit(except its not an apple)to tempt the three girls. This is a reference to the story of The Garden of Eden,where Eve is tempted by the snake. In this case,the snake is Seulgi and Eve is the three girls. But Joy knows because she is the only one not seen picking or eating strawberries in the MV. Yeri is seen in a pearl. She was a wreath of strawberries around her head,which means she has already been tempted,but the pearl means she is protected. Unfortunately, at the end of MV we see she has gone out of the pearl to join the dancing entities,which means she is not protected anymore. The lines that say,"Next time,spin the clock,Where should we go?" Might mean the girls are in a time loop!Let's go to the beginning. In one of they're album pictures, there is a girl in a pink dress with a box over her head. I think this might be Irene because the girl is wearing Irene's signature colour. I also think the 4 girls are actually dolls! Irene is controlling them and playing with them,which explains the doll like and almost childlike setting

Theory:
In the beginning of the song, Seulgi looked over the kinda fence/wall and saw this natural beauty of 4 girls as seen. And moments later, she got in as a Maleficent vibes cosplay of an owl. All four of them (without Seulgi) had some interaction with the *STRAWBERRY* and later seen that Seulgi ate the strawberries, like some kind of evil purpose. And at the kinda last scene, theres a cut in where the 4 are trap and Seulgi is outside of it (In my perspectibe)
Just something to think about hehe
Edit: Before the second chorus, Joy said "Im truly free" implying that Joy escaped the evil but then captured by the birdand the orb. All the kingdom lives peacefully until Seulgi destrpyed making at the "This is gonna be a crazy night" making that she planned this a long time. Yeri got caught picking the strawberry with SEULGI. Wendy got sussed and went deeper but went too far. Irene is taken hostage and is needed to give a certain amount of strawberry but was not enough.

What frustrates me is that out of all the reactions I've seen, no one noticed the last frame where all of them were sitting and only Seulgi moved. Like doesn't that give anything? 😭 That part to me was like "yeah... Seulgi is definitely sus"

Joy stating she’s “truly free” could simply be take from the literal inspiration of the concepts very own inspiration which is the story of creation or The Garden of Eden
Joy took the forbidden fruit basically and is now “free”. I think it’s pretty simple to explain it away as Seulgi being the Devil that tempted the girls to take the fruit and now basically belong to her
She’s not even with them in the beginning either but rather looking over a wall at what? Them
wait what if this is gonna be a crazy night stands for them betraying Joy and Strawberry stands for evil thats why all four of them had it except Joy and this might just be me but inside the monster the yellow room just 4 of them are there.. and even thought irene has the strawberry the floor is blue which is like the color of the scene in the chorus.. thats why instead of eating the strawberry she fed it to the monster and revealed the evil and Joy saying im truly free now is her escaping the bubble.
going back in time where Seulgi manipulated Yeri into eating the strawberry. and they Looked at Joy because she basically gave away what Seulgi truly is.
and Yeri saying give me your direction is basically her being manipulated by Seulgi or the birds sensed that Seulgi is sus thats why she said that and she followed them and found another Seulgi picking Strawberries and decided to join her.
and Joy is basically traveling all over the Maze she was put in to.

Among all the reaction videos I have watched, you are the best.
From what I understood, Seulgi is representing wisdom (owl). The strawberry is the death concealed beneath a smiling apparence, so I guess that Wendy fell into a trap and might die. This mv based on The Garden of Earthly Delights is a representation of people enjoying their life before going to hell after succumbing to all the traps.
If you know other things feel free to tell it I’m curious
But how Irene got a basket of strawberries already ? Is she the devil and try to seduce other people to commit sins and then go to hell ? Seulgi eats the strawberry without hesitation which implies she already dive herself into and being the devil already. Go watch the MV at 3:17, you can see the huge guys (or owl-human / bird-headed person in the hell piccture of Earthly Delight) falls down when Irene tries to give him/her these strawberries - which I believe Irene seduces Seulgi and now they are both the evils. Yeri gets out of the bubbles, Joy in the middle of the flower is seduced by a bird. But Wendy, she finds out herself about the huge strawberry, she even touchs it. I still don't know about Wendy yet. But maybe there is a connection between Wendy and Yeri (the water drop appear when Wendy touch the strawberry)

I feel like Seulgi and Irene know something and are trying to do something (we see them holding an umbrella and looking like they’re watching something). There’s also the thing that Seulgi is sitting on a throne with those bird around her and in the hell picture of Earthly Delight there’s an owl(looks like an owl) sitting on a throne but thus time it represent the hell prince and not wisdom. And also the part where Seulgi help Yeri picking up the strawberries in the garden and Joy watching them seems like Joy is jealous or angry idk. When Wendy fall in the water and see the strawberry, we see Yeri watching her and that’s why, when we see Wendy falling, it looks like weird glass, because in the painting, the place where Yeri is has a glass tube.

So to resume this, Seulgi seems to not care about eating the strawberries, like she’s immune. She represent Wisdom but can also represent the hell prince. Irene know something or is getting manipulated by someone. Joy is really sus, she looks like she is the evil in the story idk why. She was in a pretty place with a cage and a thing inside, and then she released it. Maybe the thing she released is what made Wendy falls. Yeri is watching Wendy and know what happened but she seems to be innocent so maybe she didn’t know that the strawberries that Seulgi gave her are weird.

Jordan you missed the ending where the owl went inside a yellow long thing (idk what to call it) and it transformed into Seulgi!
It's theory timeee: long story short in the past MVs Irene was manipulating the members, later Wendy and Seulgi started to realize something was going on etc etc.
Feel My Rhythm and the strawberry saga: in the first scene Seulgi looks down to the others. Yeri and Wendy look back at her while Joy in the water reminds me of Umpah umpah, to be exact umpah-pah if you know what I mean. Next time, we see her in a blooming flower which could mean (re)birth --> she can see things more clearly. Then Yeri wears a horn-crown thing similar to Seulgi's but with strawberries and it's silver. Seulgi also sits in a dark throne with a sword. Wendy is between waves, she's lost and needs help, so she looks up to Irene and Seulgi who look down from somewhere light. And in/after the chorus Wendy falls into to water where's a giant strawberry. This fruit symbolizes purity and goodness which could represtent Wendy, who does not want to manipulate anyone. Later Yeri picks up a strawberry and says "infinite black hole, hypnotizing sweet emotion". sus. But before that she said "grab me in your motion, give me a new direction" which Seulgie responded while helping her picking up the berries "come ride with me, let's go anywhere". Is she trying to get Yeri's trust to follow her? Yeah I think so. Then Seulgi says "I want to mess all the boundaries in this world" and in the bridge "Next time spin the clock, where should we go?". So Seulgi knows they're in a time loop and it's infinite and wants do make use out if it, however the power turned her evil. Back to the strawberry picking scene, Joy watches them from a little distance and says "I'm truly free now". She knows something bad is going on! Later Irene gives a basket of strawberries to a big, black monster. She looks a little scared. Could it be a trade? If Wendy = strawberry, well... does she wanna sacrifice her?? It could be about just the goodness traded to power and not Wendy in this scene. Then Seulgi stab a strawberry and eats it, also the black bird people are dancing with them around her. And is that monster = Seulgi? The editing could lead to that conclusion but I could be wrong. Then Yeri gets dark wings. She's a fallen angel who stood to the dark side, now following Seulgi. Close to the end, all 5 girls are in a yellow eye, Seulgi standing in the iris/middle and behind it. That eyes reminds me of the monster's so another reason why Seulgi could be the monster. In the next cut they're sitting kinda the same way but they're in the garden wearing pink/peach except Irene who's in the middle wearing a white dress with black bows in her hair. Everyone smiles into the camera except Seulgi who watches Yeri. Have you noticed that in the chorus they're basically dancing on water? The things I'm not sure about or haven't figured out yet are the birds, Irene's boat, Yeri's sparkling waterdrop and especially Joy's red light.
I also wanted to mention the last chorus' key change. It made me feel a little overwhelmed with emotions, a lot were happening visually too. I think it was on purpose by the editor and the other people working on it.

red velvet really does have very interesting concepts. and i love it!
From what I saw in a video the paint that the song is based on is divided into 3 paintings, depicting paradise and hell, in this mv they portray the 1st part of the painting that is heaven and temptations, Seulgi portrays the evil that is trying to make the other girls fall into temptation, strawberry was the fruit chosen by Bosch to replace the apple (forbidden fruit) and that's why Yeri being the youngest member has a crown with strawberries because they represent innocence, little by little throughout the mv we see each of the members giving in to temptation with scenes with strawberries,near the end of the mv there is another scene with paintings in which they show an owl in the chair and this one turns into Seulgi, in Bosch's painting the owl means evil also in the last seconds of the mv Seulgi turns into a owl another strong point that Seulgi represents evil, Joy would be helping Seulgi and that's why she appears spying on the other members and frees evil from the cage
It's amazing because the day before RV released this video, my RUclips recommended me to watch an analyzation to Bosch and Bruegel's paintings. 😭

Red velvet's music videos are always so interesting because there is always a back story to it.
Red Velvet is an amazing group with suchh good unique and kind of bizarre (in a good way) concepts, and they always slay it no matter what they try. I am always looking forward to what they do next, that's what I love about them, their concepts are refreshing and they don't have that usual "kpop" sound that is usually found in a lot of groups. Love RV! I love Feel My Rhythm ❤❤
